00:01Born at Massive Entertainment as a grassroots movement,
00:05Snowdrop as a groundbreaking engine created to redefine the art of gaming.
00:10Snowdrop's aim is to be more than just a tool.
00:13It's a revolution of creative freedom,
00:16ready to transform your art and release your vision.
00:20The journey began with a challenge.
00:30Crafting a lifelike New York City for Tom Clancy's The Division.
00:36Enter a new era of game development.
00:39A groundbreaking use of node graphs,
00:42an inward 3D UI system emerged, redefining past rules.
00:50The main focus of Division 1 was the attention to detail
00:54and make the world feel real.
00:56We worked on the environment with volumetric fog
00:59and particles which reacted to light and wind.
01:02We had snow particles.
01:04This helped to create the mood of the world
01:06which was loved by millions around the world.
01:12The destruction system was a big feature.
01:15For example, a car was a huge node graph system
01:18with different parts that behaved differently according to their materials.
01:22If you shoot the tires, then the suspension would react
01:25and the whole car would wobble.
01:27You could shoot the glass in the windscreens and the car lights
01:31and individual fragments would fall down simulated with physics.
01:35All of this helped us to modernize the Tom Clancy brand.
01:39The Division 2 takes the saga to new heights.
01:42Offering an intricately crafted Washington DC
01:46where industry-leading audio intensifies the realism.
01:51Of the two innovations that I think really stand out in Division 2,
01:56the outdoor reflections and the indoor diffuse reflections,
01:59as well as sounding very good,
02:01I think it really helped the sound designers.
02:03It reduced their manual labor so they could really focus on other things
02:06and really put their time and effort into the stuff that had to be handcrafted.
02:13Through the years, Snowdrop has been utilized to power a wide range of games,
02:18from realistic open-world shooters
02:21to turn-based tactical RPGs on various platforms.
02:25This highlights Snowdrop's versatility and adaptability
02:29to diverse game genres and hardware.
02:32Snowdrop is a node-based engine.
02:35Developers can easily add or develop missing functionalities.
02:39One memorable moment was when we tried the first playable build.
02:43That's when the dev team realized that breaking from a linear progression
02:47was a good choice.
02:48It really brought more freedom to the players
02:51and spiced up the exploration aspect of the game.
02:57Snowdrop evolves not just in sophistication.
03:00From cityscapes, it transforms into a universe-crafting canvas.
03:08We really wanted to bring Pandora to life,
03:10from its wildlife in the jungles and forests
03:12to up in the sky overlooking the grand open vistas of Pandora.
03:19Ray tracing is a technology that allows us to simulate
03:22how lighting bounces off surfaces in real time.
03:25We use it, for example, when the canopy blocks sunlight,
03:28but there is still light that bounces off from underneath it
03:31in the vegetation and light the canopy from below.
03:36Snowdrop's ray tracing pipeline helps give a more realistic
03:39and grounded lighting to the scenes.
03:41We give a lot of freedom to our artists.
03:43They can basically do whatever they want
03:45and realize their creative ambition without much restrictions.
03:48Snowdrop is not merely a game engine.
03:58It's a vessel that propels you on a journey to the stars.
04:04A challenge for us was to fill up the vast emptiness of space
04:07with something that doesn't look uncanny.
04:09For that we have Space Dust and Nebula.
04:12Space Dust simulates, on a very large scale,
04:15irregular space debris from rock and boulders
04:18and down to fine particles of dust.
04:21Nebula is based on the existing cloud system
04:24and altered to simulate much denser, larger
04:27and less transparent areas of space.
04:30But the story doesn't end here.
04:36As the gaming world transforms and evolves,
04:39so does Snowdrop,
04:41crafted by those who believe
04:43in the boundless power of imagination.
