“The Merry Frolics of Satan” is a 1906 French silent fantasy film directed by Georges Méliès. The film is an updated comedic adaptation of the Faust legend, borrowing elements from stage féerie productions. It follows an ambitious engineer, William Crackford, who barters with the Devil (played by Méliès himself) for superhuman powers. Crackford soon faces unexpected consequences, including a dizzying ride through the sky and encounters with the Seven Deadly Sins. The film showcases Méliès’s signature trick effects, elaborate set designs, and whimsical storytelling, making it a standout in early cinema.
