00:00Oaks with long lays with three blocked shots here at the start, putting the move on Patrick Jordan, rebound Jordan, so Michael Jordan with his third field goal, he has six points, three of eight from the field, Nick's lead 21-16, let's return to Greg Gumbel.
00:17Game at halftime of the Bulls and the Knicks, the final 114-107, the Sonics sweep the Rockets in overtime for Bill Walton and Hayden Storm, I'm Greg Gumbel, so long from Houston, let's go to Madison Square Garden in New York and join Marv Albert and Matt Gukas.
00:36Thank you very much, Greg, we're down at 10 seconds to go in this first quarter, and the Knicks split the ball and a four-point lead on the Bulls.
00:45Oakley, and the rebound fielded by the Bulls, so this first quarter comes to a close.
00:55The Knicks shooting 10-16, the Bulls 9-23, and it's the Knicks 28, the Bulls 24.
01:02Welcome back to Madison Square Garden in New York.
01:13The Knicks 28 and the Bulls 24 after one quarter, the Knicks led by as many as eight.
01:19Strong shooting by New York, led by Derek Hopper, bouncing back from the performance yesterday when he was one for 11.
01:27He's hit four from downtown, Michael Jordan, three of eight in the first quarter, six points.
01:33Dennis Rodman with six rebounds, and Dennis got involved early, and the official, Bill Oates, taking exception, hit him with a technical.
01:42Well, play was dead.
01:43Dennis Ever, the instigator, just a little light tap on the basketball.
01:47That comes under the heading of unsportsmanlike conduct, but the officials want to keep things under control here.
01:53They don't want anything to break out with just a simple tap of the ball.
01:57Very, very touchy on that call.
02:00Charlie Warren, who played so well in yesterday's Game 3 of the overtime victory,
02:06over the Bulls, is on the floor for the first time.
02:08Randy Brown, the defensive specialist, handling the ball right now.
02:12He just came on.
02:13Steve Kerr, Brown, and Jordan, a three-guard alignment with Pippen.
02:17Nice pass, but Brown could not convert.
02:20And a loose ball foul is called.
02:22The officials, Mike Mathis, Bill Oates, and Ed Middleton.
02:27The foul is called on Charles Oakley.
02:29That is his second.
02:31Oakley in a conversation with Scottie Pippen.
02:35The Knicks going with John Starks.
02:38Charlie Warren and Willie Anderson.
02:40Anderson getting the playing time yesterday, and here comes Herb Williams.
02:45Herb did not play in the overtime.
02:47In Game 3, Williams replacing Oakley, so it is Williams and Mason on the front line.
02:54Patrick Ewing setting it out right now.
02:56Ewing, two of three from the field in the first quarter.
02:59Anderson is guarding that Jordan.
03:02We are just underway in the second quarter.
03:05Beautiful fight by Pippen, but he lost the block.
03:07Mike, come on now.
03:09And the outside official, Bill Oates, making the call against the Knicks.
03:14It's on Williams.
03:15Well, Scottie Pippen, who has been shooting miserably in the last couple of games, except for certain stretches,
03:22has been more of a playmaker, at least trying to penetrate and find teammates.
03:27And with Jordan taking it to the hoop, he's hit from in front and behind again.
03:33The foul is called.
03:35It's on Williams, his second.
03:40So Michael Jordan to the line for the first time.
03:44Michael coming off the extraordinary performance yesterday.
03:4951 minutes, 17 of 35, 46 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
03:56And as he told us earlier, he said he feels great.
04:00Didn't lift weights as he did yesterday.
04:02Said got a very nice night of sleep, as I know you did, Matt, after the grueling telecast.
04:08Well, Michael's legs looked a little heavy at the outset of this game.
04:12Got a little bit of a breather.
04:13He played all but two minutes in yesterday's overtime game.
04:16Phil Jackson, not saying much about it yesterday, but indicated that he was unhappy with all the free throws that the Knicks shot yesterday.
04:24He shot 33 to just 20 for the Bulls.
04:27A two run by the Bulls to cut it with him too, and starts with the turnover.
04:33Here's Jordan to the open floor for the three.
04:41And last touch by the Knicks.
04:43The Knicks trying to tie the series after game number five will take place in Chicago on Tuesday night.
04:55Herbert Davis replacing John Starks.
04:59And the Bulls hoping to go back to Chicago, up three games to one.
05:03Starks two of three from the field, five points.
05:06Davis has not been getting the point.
05:09Offensive foul.
05:10Off the ball, as it looked like, Steve Kerr, after setting a back pick,
05:21is going to step out and get one of his rare open looks and a three-pointer
05:25as the Knicks have been trying to run him off that three as much as possible.
05:29There's Williams targeted by Dennis Rodman.
05:33Herb with a post-up move and met by Pippen.
05:35Scottie Pippen coming over to help.
05:38Here's Pippen feeding.
05:40And he's tied the game at 28.
05:42The Bulls are starting to warm to the task now.
05:45The legs are starting a little more sprightly as they're running harder on the fast break.
05:50It is now a 10-2 Chicago run.
05:58Anderson for three.
06:01Willie Anderson.
06:05Yesterday, the Knicks will get it back.
06:07Jordan was trying to work his way down court,
06:11trying to beat the Knicks down, but the pass off the bar.
06:13Now, Scottie Pippen, one of the best defenders off the ball,
06:17smelled that play out to get the steal and lead the fast break
06:21and the finish for Michael Jordan.
06:23The Knicks 31, and the Bulls 28.
06:29Ward changed his mind.
06:32And Ward able to draw the foul.
06:34And the crowd obviously loves it.
06:48Michael Jordan absolutely furious at referee Ed Middleton bearing down on him
06:53as Phil Jackson immediately claps to get, not in clapping joy,
06:58but clap to get Ron Harper up and into this game.
07:00And Randy Brown is trying to settle down.
07:03Michael Jordan, who rarely gets into foul difficulty,
07:10and he will head back to the back.
07:14Ron Harper checking back in.
07:18Michael Jordan with his third foul.
07:21Sitting down with 10 points, 4 of 10 from the field.
07:28So the Bulls in a shorthanded situation.
07:31Tony Kukos, who sat out yesterday,
07:34out to the club again today with the back injury.
07:38Reach in is called on Anderson.
07:41Well, one of the reasons why Charlie Ward so effective in yesterday's game
07:44was his penetration, getting into the teeth of the defense,
07:48this time having the ball down low, getting all tangled up with Michael Jordan,
07:53who normally will not have that particular play called against him.
07:56That normally would be a non-call.
07:57I think Duke coach says that he'll be ready for Tuesday night,
08:03but I know Chicago team positions feel that that is not the case.
08:07Nice running over by Kerr going last.
08:09They're hoping he'll be back for next weekend.
08:13The next lead, 32-30.
08:15Ward met by the double team.
08:24Ward changed his mind, but Mason not expecting it.
08:29He did that earlier, but Herb Williams was able to make the play.
08:32Hoffer with an unbelievable tip.
08:36Ron Hoffer with the tip of a miss of the Scottie Pittman shot,
08:42and he's tied the game at 32.
08:44Well, Randy Brown considered a defensive specialist in there
08:47to guard Charlie Ward to cut down on that penetration
08:50and keep pressure on his passes.
08:53Anderson.
08:54Head faking his way.
08:57And he threw the foul.
08:59Billy Anderson is not getting much playing time at the end of the season
09:02after coming over from Toronto,
09:05but suddenly seeing daylight here in the playoffs.
09:09Scottie Pittman a moment ago with the miss,
09:11but Hoffer able to finesse at home.
09:15The game is tied at 32.
09:19Take two individuals and more or less concentrate on those two individuals,
09:23and it's hard for us to get other players involved
09:26when they haven't been involved pretty much the whole game.
09:29Well, Michael Jordan taking 95 shots in the three games leading into this one,
09:34and of course that's going to keep people standing around,
09:37but it's mainly because the Knicks are not double-teaming him
09:39in the early stages of the ballgame.
09:41So with Derrick Harper on him, Michael will post up a lot
09:44and get those scoring opportunities,
09:46but it's keeping other players from being on top.
09:48Randy Brown led beautifully by Ron Hopper,
09:51and he has tied the game at 34.
09:55Eight and a half remaining in the first half.
09:58Marv Albert, Matt Girkus,
10:00and Jim Gray from Madison Square Garden in New York.
10:03The Knicks have the hot hand 11-of-17 shooting at 5-of-7 from downtown.
10:09Here's Davis with the runner,
10:10and Rodman rebounds.
10:12That's number seven for Dennis Rodman.
10:14Sitting on the bench after picking up a third personal foul.
10:24Pippen with the good footwork,
10:25and then blocked by Williams.
10:28Well, Dennis Rodman had the smaller Charlie Ward posted up inside,
10:32calling for the ball,
10:33and Pippen waved him out of there.
10:35He wanted to go one-on-one against a bigger player.
10:38Davis.
10:39Well, Huber Davis coming out more aggressive at the offensive end.
10:45Played only seven minutes yesterday.
10:47And, of course, the excellent play of Charlie Ward
10:49kept him on the bench even longer,
10:51but no question,
10:52Huber Davis has evidently lost some confidence in his O game.
10:56Plus, I think Jeff Van Gundy has as well.
10:58The Knicks have a two-point lead with seven-and-a-half to go
11:08in this first half.
11:13Knicks being out rebounded by the Bulls, 14-10.
11:17Rodman with seven.
11:19That turnover, number eight for the Knicks in this first half.
11:23The biggest concern for New York is that offensive rebounding
11:26and right behind it is turnovers.
11:28The Knicks are going to be with seven turnovers.
11:35James Edwards, who just checked in,
11:38is able to tie the game at 36.
11:45Here is Ewing.
11:46Patrick Ewing is back on the floor.
11:50His third field goal, three of four.
11:52He has six points.
11:54It's the Knicks, 38, and the Bulls, 36.
11:58Edwards.
12:01Kept alive by Pippen.
12:04And knocked out of bounds by Anderson.
12:08Knicks calling for time.
12:106.53 to go.
12:13In this first half, the Knicks by two.
12:16Patrick Ewing with the turnaround right in the face
12:19of the 41-year-old James Edwards.
12:27Back at Madison Square Garden,
12:29it's the Knicks with a two-point lead.
12:31Let's go over to Jim Gray.
12:32Jim?
12:32All right, thank you very much, Marv.
12:34Well, the Bulls are very unhappy
12:35with the basketball that they are using.
12:38Now, usually, both teams go out with the referees,
12:40and they choose the ball.
12:41Well, the referees chose the ball today,
12:43and the Bulls are unhappy with it.
12:44I just asked Michael Jordan.
12:46He says it's a bad ball.
12:47He didn't agree to play with that ball,
12:48so I asked Mike Mathis.
12:50He says, well, usually the team that's behind
12:51doesn't like the ball,
12:53and that's what's happening here.
12:54Marv?
12:56All right, thank you, Jim.
12:58I can recall situations.
13:01I'm told it's the same ball that was used yesterday.
13:04As Michael Jordan reports back into the lineup
13:08playing with the three fouls,
13:10Derek Harper is back,
13:11so it's in possession up by two points
13:15with six and a half remaining.
13:18In this first half,
13:20I can recall one time New York Knicks,
13:23Bill Bradley carrying a little pin with him,
13:26and if he did not like the feel of the basketball,
13:29this is Bushler.
13:30George Bushler ties the game at 38.
13:33He could take it out,
13:35kind of shielding the ball away from the officials,
13:37and he'd take air out of the basketball.
13:39And you'll remember, Marv,
13:40Phil Jackson was a teammate of Bill Bradley's
13:42on those New York Knicks teams.
13:43He supposedly does the same thing
13:45as far as checking the pressure in the basketball.
13:48But the league, I believe,
13:49prefers that a more new ball,
13:52a more orange one,
13:53as Patrick Ewing finishes off nicely
13:55in the lane in traffic,
13:56because this is an old kind of ratty ball
13:59that they're using right now.
14:00But the Knicks like it,
14:02shooting 65%.
14:03Knicks lead by two.
14:10Edwards.
14:13And it is slapped over the glass.
14:17And last touch by the Bulls.
14:20Let's get back to Jim Gray,
14:22who is doing his finest investigative reporting
14:24on this subject.
14:26All right, Marv,
14:26I just spoke to Dennis Rodman.
14:27He said the ball is very slippery.
14:29Neither team, he feels,
14:30can handle the ball,
14:31particularly the Bulls.
14:32He said,
14:32we have asked several times to change the ball,
14:34and none of the three officials
14:35will acknowledge and do that.
14:37Marv.
14:38All right, Jim.
14:40Foul was called on Brown.
14:41Randy Brown.
14:44Called for the blocking foul.
14:45Well, the Knicks,
14:46as you mentioned,
14:47do not mind the basketball.
