Greg Lobban wins Scottish Squash Championship 2025
Transcript
00:00Greg, congratulations. Fifth time Scottish champion. First time in Inverness you've won it, I believe.
00:06Yeah. Does that make it extra special?
00:08Yeah, for sure. I think this is a court I grew up playing on and I had a lot of friends and family in the crowd today,
00:14so it was really special having it in Inverness. I was really excited when it was announced that it was going to be here.
00:19Yeah, it's very special when it was at home song.
00:22How did the tournament go as a whole for you, in your opinion?
00:25Pretty well. I mean, it's been a really tough schedule between the last few months and weeks.
00:31We were at the European team championships competing as a team and then I think we were in Chicago for the world championships
00:36and now we're here in Inverness, so it's been a lot of travel. The whole week was, it feels quite long,
00:41but I had a lot of family time, relaxation time at the start of the week and then I felt fresh and ready to go this week.
00:46I knew I had a difficult match on my hands today and that's what I got.
00:50Comfortable first two games, he pulled it back in the third game, but he's had enough and it's time to finish it off, yeah?
00:56Yeah, just about. I mean, Rory started to find his way, the ball got a little bit colder, a little bit softer
01:02and he found his marks really well, so it was really hard to save him off in those last two games.
01:07But yeah, really happy. All I think about now is just trying to win that last point and if you do that,
01:12it doesn't matter how good you play, it's just about getting that last point, so that's what I did today.
01:17Remind me of when you first played here, how old were you?
01:20I was quite a late start actually, I did start when I was like 12 or 13 years old,
01:25but I last played here properly when I was 17 before I moved out to Edinburgh, so it's been a long time.
01:31I've been up visiting family and playing on the courts here, but I've not played a competitive match here in a long time.
01:36Yeah, but a good benchmark for going ahead for the rest of 2025?
01:41Yeah, yeah, we've only got two more events of the year, of the season.
01:46The Irish opened on Tuesday, so it's a quick turnaround, and then the British opened the following weeks,
01:50so I've got two more weeks of work, shall we say, and then I get to relax a little bit.
01:55What is the aspirations for 2025 for you?
01:58I'm sure, at the moment really, I've reached my highest squadron in the 16 last year,
02:03I'd be really chuffed to it so I've managed to achieve that again and stay in the top 20,
02:08but if that doesn't happen, I'm not too bothered.
02:11I think if someone told me I was going to get top 20 in the world at the start of my career,
02:15I'd be pretty stoked about it, so I'm just trying to enjoy it for as long as I can do it now,
02:20and hopefully my body stays healthy.
02:22And you get a chance to see family before you head off?
02:24Yeah, I've got one more day here, I get the late train tomorrow night back down to Edinburgh
02:28before flying to Ireland, Dublin on Tuesday, so yeah.
02:31We'll make your most of the time in the Highlands, thanks very much.
02:33I will.
02:34Cheers.
