00:00So, to the line-ups, and there were three changes to the Chelsea team
00:05beaten at Newcastle last week.
00:07The league's third-best defence has Robert Sanchez as its last line.
00:12Rhys James and Tosin Adarabayo come into the back four
00:15in place of Caicedo and Chalabar,
00:17but there is a midfield role today for the Ecuadorian,
00:19restored alongside Enzo Fernandez as Romier Lavia drops to the bench.
00:24Cole Palmer scored a hat-trick in Chelsea's 4-3 victory
00:27in this fixture last season,
00:28with Sancho ineligible to play against his parent club,
00:31the wingers are Madaweke and Neto,
00:33and 19-year-old Tyreke George starts in place of the suspended Nicholas Jackson.
00:38Achiampong and Anselmino provide a pretty youthful element
00:41to the Chelsea substitutes.
00:46Manchester United rank the changes for the home defeat by West Ham.
00:49There are five more today,
00:51but the line-up is stronger than might have been anticipated
00:54just five days before that Europa League final.
00:57Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof come into the back three alongside Luke Shaw.
01:01Mazraoui and Dogu are the wing-backs,
01:03with Casemiro returning to the midfield.
01:06The two players behind the strikers are Diallo and Mounce,
01:09returning to his former club,
01:11and Rasmus Hoyland leads the line,
01:13as presumably he will be required to in Bilbao.
01:17Kolya and Hebben are back from injury to albeit the bench.
01:20Yoro, De Ligt and Dalot are all still under treatment.
01:23Let's go, let's go!
01:26About to conduct the toss of the coin as Cole Palmer
01:29waits to hopefully make an impact against the club
01:32that he always supported as a boy growing up in Manchester.
01:37Many pictures available of him from his younger days
01:40wearing the red of Manchester United,
01:42even if it was the blue of City that he first represented
01:45prior to his move to West London.
01:49So we've spoken about what Manchester United need to do,
01:53of course, Chelsea have important business of their own to attend to tonight.
01:57Well, yeah, they certainly do, John, and of course for Chelsea.
02:01I mean, both of these teams theoretically can finish
02:03with Champions League football at the end of this season,
02:05which would be quite incredible, wouldn't it?
02:08But Chelsea, look, they've got to keep their foot right to the floor.
02:11They also have a day in the European Cup final coming up,
02:16which is going to be very important to them,
02:19albeit it might not appeal to everybody,
02:21but it's still important once you're there to win it.
02:23So there's a lot at stake for both coaches tonight.
02:26They know that this game is of genuine significance.
02:31So Maresco awaits kick-off, as do we all.
02:42Chelsea, one defeat in seven, Manchester United, no wins in seven,
02:46equalling their worst run of the Premier League era.
02:51A stopping off point for the visitors en route to Bilbao
02:54and a Europa League final that carries so much significance.
02:57Just five nights away for Chelsea,
02:59it's about to try to close out a finishing position in the top five.
03:03And with it, Champions League football via that route next season.
03:07Here's Dorgoo for Manchester United.
03:10Any surprise on your part at the relative strength of the United line-up?
03:14A little, John, yes, I must be honest.
03:17It wouldn't have been the biggest surprise to me this evening
03:20had we not have seen Bruno Fernandes, et cetera.
03:22But I think because United's league form has been so poor lately,
03:28that they just don't feel that they can walk into that Europa League final.
03:33On the back of it, they need to produce something here
03:35that will energise them a wee bit next week.
03:44And the confirmation of the Chelsea line-up,
03:46which does have the teenager Tyreek George playing up front through the middle.
03:49Yes, it does indeed.
03:51And again, precocious talent, Tyreek George.
03:56As we see Moises Carcedo there with a mask on his face.
04:01But Tyreek George, yeah, a young man with a lot of potential.
04:05Let's hope tonight he can show what he's all about.
04:20I also think John Enzo Maresco deciding Colt Palmer,
04:25you can see, putting a little bit of heat on Anana there.
04:29Playing in that ten position again.
04:31He was playing wide at one point a month or two ago,
04:35very much at the heart of it, and the best when he's in this sort of position.
04:38And one or two signs of some form returning in the last few games after a pretty hard spell.
04:44Yeah, I thought in the game against Liverpool he played well, played really well.
04:48Chelsea started very well that night, so again, they'll like to replicate that this evening.
04:53United, again, already banking up, as we can see.
05:00Ball by Rhys James, looking for Pedro Neto.
05:03The penalty header is by Dogu.
05:11Neto.
05:15James, Carcedo.
05:19Robaio.
05:24And a chance for Amad Jalot.
05:28That's Rauy in support.
05:33Bruno Fernandes.
05:35There's a lovely ball in, and Mount was stooping, James was just in front of him.
05:39Tell you what, it's a stunning ball in, isn't it?
05:42He just flips that into that box so casually, Bruno Fernandes.
05:47He doesn't have to look, he just knows where he is and knows the sort of area he wants to hit,
05:52and then it's up to people to get on the end of it. They very nearly did.
06:06Cucaracha.
06:10Shaw, navigating to the path of Harry Maguire.
06:17FANS CHANT
06:36Carcedo.
06:40It's a brilliant run.
06:42Parma.
06:47Threaded for Madueke, would have been a picture-book goal.
06:53Wow, what a great move.
06:54Just wonder whether Noni Madueke could have maybe even rolled that back across the six-yard box,
06:59but that's how you eliminate opponents, what Moises Carcedo does there,
07:04just runs past four or five red shirts as if they're not there.
07:08How about this for a delivery?
07:10Might have been offside, look, there, might have just squared it back across the six-yard box,
07:15Tyree George would have had a tap-in.
07:27Bruno Fernandes, free-kick Manchester United.
07:33How on earth would they be without him this season?
07:36It's been a rash of muddling mediocrity, 19 goals and 17 assists.
07:42Yeah.
07:44No, he's been excellent, he really has.
07:49When players have had to step up and be counted,
07:52particularly in the European matches, no-one's done it more than Bruno, he's been terrific.
08:12Hoyland.
08:16Diallo.
08:19Bruno Fernandes.
08:23Expensively spreading it for Patrick Dorgoo.
08:28Mason Mount, who was a former Chelsea player.
08:42Let's go!
08:57And the switch from Bruno Fernandes out to Dorgoo.
09:04That's a comfortable take for Robert Sanchez,
09:07you've already seen how aggressive position Patrick Dorgoo is
09:10taking up down that left-wing back position for United.
09:14Equally, Masraoui down the right.
09:18Lindelof.
09:19Successfully fending off Madawaki.
09:22And that's why Victor Lindelof is in the gully,
09:24and Harry Maguire is in between Lindelof and Luke Shaw,
09:28because anything that is hit into those wider areas,
09:31Lindelof's quick enough, Luke Shaw will also compete,
09:34whereas Madawaki, and particularly Neto, very quick.
09:40CHANTING
10:04Masraoui.
10:10CHANTING
10:20George.
10:23That's not going to go to the centre-back, Colwell.
10:28It's very well done, Harry Maguire.
10:31Neat and tidy.
10:32We're used to seeing him drop in the shoulder now,
10:34in the right-wing positions.
10:36The finest wingers around.
10:39Very well played there.
10:45It's his first draft back of the season.
11:00That one just got away from Bruno Fernandes.
11:04And Lenzo just catches him on his foot.
11:07He's not happy with that.
11:09Because every time he hits the floor, every United fan
11:12around the world holds their breath,
11:14because of how important he's going to be.
11:25How about you?
11:33That's OK, quick around.
11:35Palmer.
11:37CHANTING
11:40Dogu.
11:43CHANTING
11:59CHEERING
12:01George.
12:03CHEERING
12:1226th Premier League game at the helm for Ruben Amiram tonight.
12:16He's only won six of them.
12:23Paul Palmer's got an issue with the taping on his right leg.
12:32CHEERING
13:03Palmer.
13:06Kukerea.
13:07CHEERING
13:10Injury to Harry Maguire.
13:12CHANTING
13:31In fairness, Tyreke George does step across
13:34and quite rightly just gets his body in front of Harry Maguire,
13:37but does catch him.
13:39I think once Harry Maguire saw that move developing,
13:41I think by staying down on the floor,
13:43he knew exactly what he was doing.
13:44He was perfectly OK.
13:46CHANTING
14:11CHEERING
14:14James.
14:18It's a foul by Dogu.
14:33CHANTING
14:41CHANTING
14:56Eventually the free kick will be taken.
15:01CHANTING
15:11CHANTING
15:17Being discomforted by Bruno Fernandes.
15:24It's really good work from Bruno Fernandes, that.
15:27I think Moises Carcedo was looking for a free kick,
15:30but he was never there.
15:32It's good pressure.
15:37CHANTING
15:42CHANTING
15:54He has to be a little more disciplined tonight,
15:56Bruno Fernandes.
15:58Without Ugarte, Casemiro,
16:01holding the foot in the middle of the park.
16:02We know that,
16:04despite his vast experience,
16:06how clever he can be,
16:08he's just not the quickest across the ground.
16:11Might need a little bit of help in there from time to time.
16:33That's round.
16:35That ball is on every time for Dogu.
16:41And Dogu earns a corner.
16:47Here's James just looking.
16:48Where's the help, guys?
16:50Because he's having to get on the cover a little bit,
16:52in behind Adebayo.
16:55If United switch it early and quickly,
16:58then their left wing-back is in acres of space out there.
17:03The Blues have been at something of a premium
17:05in the Premier League for Manchester United.
17:08It's pretty much mildly.
17:09Only four teams have scored fewer goals this season.
17:15Bruno Fernandes.
17:16Or will.
17:21Dogu.
17:23Shaw.
17:26Carcedo.
17:27Dogu.
17:29Shaw.
17:32Uribe.
17:45Dogu.
17:48See there, I think that's going to go in the box.
17:50In towards Maguire!
17:58Quarter of an hour in, Harry Maguire.
18:02This new-found goal-scoring force
18:05pops up in the centre-forward position
18:08and finishes like a properly accomplished striker.
18:13Great goal. Took it brilliantly.
18:15And again, I thought Dogu could have put the ball in himself.
18:18But as soon as he rolls that back to Bruno Fernandes,
18:20United have got plenty of red shirts in there.
18:23Look, that could have come in.
18:24Bruno Fernandes recognises that, puts it straight in.
18:27Is Harry Maguire offside? He might be, you know.
18:30He might be.
18:31Just lean him forward a bit.
18:33It's going to be extremely close.
18:35Look, the finish is a really good one.
18:38It's controlled, he doesn't try and hit it too hard.
18:41He just steers it. Great goal.
18:42Lovely finish that, but it's going to be a really close call.
18:50Well, Manchester United currently have a centre-forward
18:52who can't score and a centre-back that can and has.
18:57Subject to this surviving the rigours of VAR inspection.
19:03I just wonder if that expression there from Ruben Amorim
19:06suggests that he thinks that Harry Maguire
19:09may be just in a very slight offside position.
19:12We'll see.
19:13From that angle, it looks like he is,
19:14but we know with VAR that once the lines go on,
19:20it can be a little misleading,
19:22what you see sometimes from various angles.
19:27Well, this is going to be called offside.
19:29The goal is being chalked off to huge Chelsea cheers
19:33and much Manchester United disappointment.
19:38Yeah, not a lot in it.
19:39Look, he's just leaning forward.
19:42Just shoulder blade, right knee, edge of it.
19:45Just so marginal, that.
19:49Well, they've had a nice little spell of possession there, United,
19:52now for five, six minutes.
19:54And I think that's a warning sign for Chelsea
19:57that this Manchester United team aren't coming to the bridge
20:00just to sit and fulfil an obligation.
20:03They're coming here to try and win.
20:05Chelsea just need to up it a bit.
20:20Henry Maguire denied his moment.
20:32Great finish, John, wasn't it?
20:34He'd be so relieved Enzo Maresco there.
20:49That's not going down well with the Chelsea faithful.
21:01There have been a few boos of discontent,
21:03even though the goal was disallowed.
21:05They're not particularly happy with what they're seeing.
21:07No.
21:08No.
21:18Enzo Fernandes.
21:24I see Casemiro there.
21:25Just drifted out and followed Cole Palmer.
21:30Again, he's the one that will be probably detailed
21:33to have eyes for him.
21:35Cole Palmer picks up those positions just in behind Tariq George.
21:46Kukerea.
21:48Noni Madueke.
21:55Fernandes.
22:00Good play, good pressure again from Manchester United.
22:03Mason Mount this time.
22:06At the moment, home team just struggling to stitch
22:08anything significant together.
22:33Maguire.
23:03Jones.
23:25Bouncing off Caicedo.
23:29Pedro Neto.
23:34Dorgu.
23:36Again, good play between Dorgu and Luke Shaw,
23:39making sure they don't allow Neto to get going.
23:43Dorgu in for Mason Mount.
23:48That's not a bad ball out from Patrick Dorgu there yet.
23:53Mason Mount gives him the thumbs up.
23:55Again, United with nice numbers on the edge of the box.
23:59Just a little slow to react to that,
24:01coming back towards him there, Mason Mount.
24:05Chelsea fans know exactly what he's capable of
24:08from the edge of the box.
24:09We saw many times in a blue shirt,
24:11he could knock him in from that sort of range.
24:25Neto.
24:29Remember, no Jackson suspended, no Sancho ineligible
24:33for Chelsea this evening.
24:39Nkunku and Guillaume both injured.
24:44So the attacking options are a little limited.
24:58Mason Mount.
25:16Mason Mount.
25:22Casavera.
25:25Dorgu against James.
25:27Might have gone the wrong way there, Casavera.
25:45For five minutes, Chelsea have been promising since then.
25:50I think United have absolutely grabbed the game
25:53and are looking the team that are playing with a bit more confidence.
25:59They're finding each other in useful little positions.
26:01Now they need to start working Sanchez just a bit more
26:04during this good period.
26:14Gelo is down for Manchester United.
26:17This is Moises Caicedo.
26:20Parma.
26:28Madueke.
26:31Still Gelo down on the turf.
26:34Mane, Madueke.
26:36It's going to come for Rhys James.
26:38Oh, what a lovely strike that is.
26:43Oh, he's hit that so well.
26:46He had to wait for that.
26:49Just got his body in the right position.
26:51Watch, he just steps aside, lets it come,
26:53and he hits that so beautifully.
26:57Very unlucky, Rhys James.
26:59Lovely strike.
27:00Lovely wing play as well from Madueke prior to that.
27:09You heard the ooh as that was replayed on the giant screen inside the stadium.
27:14Oh, he's hit it well, John, hasn't he?
27:15Look, that's started well outside the post and it's always coming back.
27:21You know what that reminds me of?
27:22Benjamin Pavard at the World Cup.
27:24Yeah, good goal.
27:25Absolutely.
27:26I remember Michael Essien hit one here one night.
27:29Do you remember that one that started outside,
27:30into the same goal actually?
27:32Started outside the post and come back in.
27:35But that was a beautiful strike that from Rhys James.
27:40Not even got started on some of your goals here, have we?
27:45FANS ROAR
28:15FANS SING
28:29Caicedo.
28:33Fernandes penalised.
28:34James.
28:36That's too strong for Neto.
28:38Just about to say that Chelsea might have been trying to mix things up a bit
28:42because they're finding it difficult to get the ball to Cole Palmer.
28:46It's almost too cool amongst the spectators this evening.
28:53But Chelsea just might have to go a bit further.
28:55I think it's going to be a tough game.
28:57It's going to be a tough game.
28:58It's going to be a tough game.
28:59It's going to be a tough game.
29:01But Chelsea just might have to go a bit longer from time to time, I think.
29:05Particularly towards Neto.
29:08Good numbers there, possession-wise for United.
29:11Rummenanger would be delighted, I think, with the way his team have started.
29:15But, as we all know, it's going to be a tough game.
29:17It's going to be a tough game.
29:18It's going to be a tough game.
29:19It's going to be a tough game.
29:20It's going to be a tough game.
29:21It's going to be a tough game.
29:22It's going to be a tough game.
29:23It's going to be a tough game.
29:24It's going to be a tough game.
29:25It's going to be a tough game.
29:26It's going to be a tough game.
29:27It's going to be a tough game.
29:28It's going to be a tough game.
29:29It's going to be a tough game.
29:30It's going to be a tough game.
29:31It's going to be a tough game.
29:32Rummenanger would be delighted, I think, with the way his team have started.
29:36But, as we all know, when things are going well
29:38and you feel like you're dominating or you're on top,
29:40you've got to make it count.
29:55Caicedo.
29:57Parma.
29:59And the looping deflection feeds a corner.
30:03That's better.
30:04He needs to try and get involved a little bit more.
30:09Cole Parma.
30:10Bruno actually just stumbled on that one
30:13and eventually it comes to Parma here.
30:16Again, we've seen in the past
30:18from that sort of range he can be very useful.
30:29CBM!
30:30CBM!
30:31Go on!
30:32CBM!
30:33CBM!
30:34Go on!
30:35CBM!
30:37Neto.
30:41Sturgeon trying to beat it.
30:42Comes out to Neto again.
30:48Pinto Fernandes.
30:49Big appeals for handball.
30:51Yeah.
30:53The referee has given the free kick
30:55but of course it's going to be checked.
30:59Christmas Hoyland looks like the guy
31:01that was right in the way of this strike.
31:03Let's have a look.
31:05Well, look, it does hit his hand
31:06but I think he's in close enough proximity there
31:10for that to be very, very difficult to give.
31:13I do. Yeah, I get the appeal, of course.
31:16But I don't think you can give that.
31:18BASTERODY
31:27And with the reasons you've just outlined
31:30the consists of decided that no further intervention is required.
31:42That's the difficulty for players
31:43in that sort of situation, John.
31:45When someone like Enzo is shaping up to hit once and for all
31:47always shaping up to hit one on the volley you just got to get out there you want to make yourself
31:50as big as you can of course now those with your arms stretched out wide then you're asking for
31:55trouble you've seen in european club competition there's a greater likelihood that that would be
32:00good yeah interpretation
32:18neto
32:30bruno fernandez
32:40the challenge what idea from bruno fernandez
32:44just perhaps just needed to knock that another 10 yards further forward to give
32:48the yellow a chance to really chase after it
33:00so
33:15and the following wednesday may the 28th in wroclaw in poland chelsea facing betis of spain
33:24in the final of the europa conference league
33:33bruno fernandez actually acknowledged his own foul there with an
33:37arm upraised and he's going to be yellow carded by chris caverner
33:46so
33:51yeah he's late with that one all right
33:57i don't think you have any complaints and in fact you're just very quick to
34:01as you say accept that call and move on
34:16so
34:35got to get hold of that ball and hang on to erasmus oil in there
34:39it's bread and butter stuff for a striker got to be better at it neto
34:48that did come at him really quickly didn't it towards the near post
34:53exceptionally fast pedro neto
34:57so united have got to make sure that they get close to him don't let him get going
35:00show him into traffic into other red shirts
35:17palma
35:24seven of their last eight here in the league
35:26good position casimiro gets in there you can see him just having a look around and
35:33again senses that might be fired across that six-yard line and gets in that gully to deal with it
35:56so
36:05netto
36:09kaiseido
36:14tama
36:15padua
36:26okay
36:36and i think he's seen his team again have little flurries but in the main
36:41it's obviously need to be better here i don't think the pressure they've applied
36:45so far has been consistent enough and i don't think it's had enough penetration
36:51up to now i've been second best in terms of possession numbers they were up until a few
36:57minutes ago
37:17the game was pretty tight between these two back in november at old trafford and finished level one
37:21a piece
37:34no fixture in premier league history

38:34once he just drags that back and then wriggles past him
38:37so there's nobody really there in fact netto's touch just took him towards
38:44i think red shirts just a little too much and therefore the cross lack to care
39:08so
39:26top goalie's here tonight the chelsea chairman of the last three years
39:30he'll be pretty desperate for the cash flow that the champions league would bring one imagines
39:34the chelsea have been out of that money stream for the last two years
39:41and the general signs coming out of stamford bridge particularly in the last few days suggest
39:45that maybe maresco has done enough to get a second season yeah i think so personally not
39:52easy for any coach never mind a relative novice to come into stamford bridge during this era
39:59this particular time not easy of course they started the season very well in the top four for
40:06a fair while up to christmas they were second at christmas and there you go
40:10so again that always that was probably punching above their weight a bit
40:16so i think if they were to end up with a champions league place and
40:22the european conference cup in their back pockets that is not a bad season i don't think at all
40:30his sixth last season under pochettino with the same number of points that they currently have
40:40this and they're concluding league fixture at nottingham forest which could be critical
40:45to add to their tally
40:49um
40:56toma
41:18so
41:41you can see there in terms of attempts chelsea superior without yet getting anything significant
41:48on target
41:54i do think both teams need to provide that little bit more quality
41:59as they get within 30 40 yards of the opponent's goal
42:03you need to produce something better than what we've seen so far
42:18so
42:38oh
42:48so
42:56sure
43:1817 the bridge in the premier league manchester united's away performances
43:36wins in their last 24 on the road in the league
43:48so
44:02again very difficult to get the execution right on the ball like that
44:08how do i get on the half turn can't really make anything of it that's where chelsea need to be
44:12better pedro neto a couple of times has got wide but knocked him straight to the goalkeeper
44:18a couple of chances off the left side they've been dealt with at the near post just can't seem to
44:23find a blue shirt when they must need to
44:29these james and tatic dorgo are both down
44:48who has been able to pick himself up the chelsea physio is on his way
44:57yeah they can be painful that reese james just watches
45:05his right ankle just sort of go underneath him a little bit there as he lands
45:10when you roll an ankle like that coming down on it that can be quite nasty
45:14a long time living on the horizon now
45:22manchester united have set a low bar in the premier league this season but to this point
45:28perhaps one of their slightly better performances yeah look they've been competitive tonight john
45:32yep again i think they showed that they had a nice control of possession
45:37and again apart from the harry maguire goal which is very very close to of course putting them in
45:45front that aside there's nothing really to show for that amount of possession but with their
45:53current league form they would have come to stanford bridge tonight just wanting to make
45:57sure that they were competitive that they can control the ball and handle the ball away from
46:03and important that they do that the chelsea just again as i mentioned just had a few little flurries
46:09and one or two little moments here or there but not quite enough this was the best at least james
46:15strike was beautifully hit really lovely strike but it's just unlucky to see it rattle the post
46:21so
46:31as james has helped to the far side he continues to flex malo gusto
46:37is going through some warming up exercises he would be the replacement
46:51so
47:02pala
47:16caicedo expecting five extra minutes when the ball goes up
47:24back on fernandez netto caicedo palma
47:40kukurea
47:43madawaki
47:45and palma and enzo fernandez and the flag goes up to spare his plushes yeah
47:57the flag certainly saved enzo fernandez there
48:00but it was that cold palma strike that took a deflection didn't it which
48:05just seemed to confuse anana a wee bit you can see that quite rightly the flag goes up
48:10but nonetheless enzo should still tuck that in the back of the net
48:18the goalkeeper just parries it right down into that dangerous area he's thankful to
48:22anana got his hands on it but thankful that enzo fernandez just straying half a yard offside
48:40so
48:50bruno fernandez
48:53colwell on the bounce of sanchez
49:10so
49:40so
49:44i don't think either team really complain confidently enough to play a bit of one touch
49:49sharp one touch in and around the edge of the box that's what it looks like it's going to need to
49:55to give someone a lead here palma
50:00so
50:04james netto and dog who spread himself successfully the challenge very good tackle
50:16so
50:24colton
50:42it's a little deflection on the way with that cross so goes out for a corner
50:53so
51:16these spectators have headed off for halftime refreshments already
51:23and levi colwell has had his shirt removed well they've been pushing and
