00:00:30Now, let's pretend you're having a game of poker and you're using these cards.
00:00:42Let's just pretend that you have a ten, and a two, and a three, and a seven, and a queen.
00:00:46Of course, I don't have those cards, but if I did have the cards, they'd look like this.
00:00:50Would you do me a favor?
00:00:51Would you sit on the other ten?
00:00:52Thank you so much.
00:00:53Now, make sure they're all the way in the middle.
00:00:54That's important.
00:00:55Okay?
00:00:56Remember, this is my trick, big guy.
00:00:57Okay?
00:00:58Don't forget that.
00:00:59Now, my beautiful assistant will hand me the pack.
00:01:01All right.
00:01:02Now, so look.
00:01:03If you take your two kings, you put them on top of the deck, and just snap, one card
00:01:09will appear before you.
00:01:10Yeah.
00:01:11Yeah.
00:01:12I've seen it happen.
00:01:13I was there.
00:01:14Sure.
00:01:15Look.
00:01:16So now we have a king, a card, and a king.
00:01:17So not just any card.
00:01:18We have an ace.
00:01:19Look.
00:01:20I'll do that again.
00:01:21All it takes is a little squeeze, and a card will appear between.
00:01:23This happens every single time.
00:01:24Try to cut off exactly ten cards.
00:01:27Let's see how close you get.
00:01:28Okay?
00:01:29And show me the signal.
00:01:30Let me see.
00:01:31Okay, that's eight.
00:01:32You missed by two, but you're fine.
00:01:33We'll count them in a minute.
00:01:34We'll count them in a minute.
00:01:35Put them face down in front of you.
00:01:36You're doing really good.
00:01:37I'm very proud of you.
00:01:38Okay?
00:01:39You really are.
00:01:40That's a nice shirt, too.
00:01:41I don't care.
00:01:42It'll come back in style.
00:01:43You keep wearing it.
00:01:44All right.
00:01:45All right.
00:01:46No.
00:01:47No.
00:01:48No.
00:01:49No.
00:01:50No.
00:01:51No.
00:01:52No.
00:01:53No.
00:01:54No.
00:01:55No.
00:01:56No.
00:01:57What?
00:01:58Pardon me?
00:01:59She don't know.
00:02:00D-d-d-d-arose?
00:02:01Who's D-d-d-d-arose?
00:02:02She's a good guy, too.
00:02:03I know her real well.
00:02:04Anyway.
00:02:05I'm going to start off with a little card trick, but we have a, we have a, could you
00:02:12stop it, please?
00:02:13Cut it out.
00:02:14Just stop.
00:02:15All right.
00:02:16But anyway, this is what a deck of cards looks like before they leave the factory.
00:02:21That is, before they're printed, okay?
00:02:22These cards are completely blank on both sides, as you can see, and I discovered you can do
00:02:27a lot of great tricks with this. Like, for example, Dave, check this out. You're going
00:02:30to love this one. Look, you can take any card, remember that card. Got it? Okay? We'll put
00:02:35it on the bottom, snap the finger, it comes to the top. Thank you. Thank you very much.
00:02:40Yeah, baby! Oh, yeah! Oh! You want me? Sure you do. All right. No, you saw him. You saw
00:02:46him checking me out. All right. So, now, there's another way you can do it. If you want to
00:02:50print the cards, you just go like that. But, of course, wait a minute. Maybe that was too
00:02:54fast. Let's start over. This is what cards look like before they leave the factory. I
00:02:58got more. Stick around. All right. Check it out, baby. Now, let's pretend you're having
00:03:02a game of poker and you're using these cards. And let's just pretend that you have a 10
00:03:06and a 2 and a 3 and a 7 and a queen. Of course, I don't have those cards. But if I did have
00:03:11the cards, they'd look like this. But let me be honest with you. This is not a real
00:03:15card. See, I cheat. This is one of those trick cards because it doesn't have a back on the
00:03:20other side. If you want to make a back on the other side, all you do is this. Uh-oh.
00:03:24I'm sorry. It went down to the bottom. That was my fault. Let's start over. This is what
00:03:30cards look like before they leave the factory. Here's how they look after they're printed.
00:03:35Not just one, but every single card in the deck. Thank you. Not just the front, but also
00:03:42the back. Of course, it's very important that you remember this is what cards look like
00:03:48before they leave the factory. Now, do me a favor. Keep that between us. If anybody
00:03:52asks you how it's done, just say you don't know.
00:03:55Yes! You don't know!
00:03:57You don't know!
00:03:59Thank you. Thank you. Thank you very much. Thanks for coming to my little party here.
00:04:05Wow. And what a great gift you brought me.
00:04:07Thanks, man.
00:04:09You know, last night I went to bed with two different women. By the time I was done blowing
00:04:13them up, I was too tired to do anything. I just went right to bed.
00:04:16I went right to sleep right away.
00:04:18Anyway, we've got a little... Thanks for laughing, sir. Thank you very much. I really appreciate it.
00:04:22Yeah, oh, sure. Yeah, sure. Yeah.
00:04:26All right. Here's what we're going to do. We're going to start off with a little card trick.
00:04:30And here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to start with you. If you wouldn't mind, do me a favor
00:04:34to make this fair. Just name any two red kings.
00:04:38Diamonds and hearts.
00:04:39Very good. Okay, so I'm going to remove those two cards. There's the diamonds, and there's
00:04:45the hearts. And I want you to watch this close. I discovered something about these two cards.
00:04:49And if you zoom in close, you can see this. I discovered you can tell them apart because
00:04:54this one has the diamond, and that one has the heart. Isn't that awesome?
00:04:58Yeah. So look, if you take the two kings, you put them on top of the deck, and just
00:05:02snap, one card will appear before you. Yeah, yeah, I've seen it happen.
00:05:06I was there, sure. Look, so now we have a king, a card, and a king.
00:05:10But not just any card. We have an ace. Look, I'll do that again.
00:05:14All it takes is a little squeeze, and a card will appear between.
00:05:17This happens every single time, and it just turns out that there's a pair.
00:05:21Two aces. I'll do it again, ladies. Settle down. We'll be going home in a minute, but let me finish the trick.
00:05:25Okay? Watch. All we do is squeeze, and when we do that, we have a third ace.
00:05:29So again, that's a king, a card, and a king. That's ace number three.
00:05:33For the last one, let's play it the hard way. Let's play it long distance.
00:05:37You can see the front of the card, and you can see the back.
00:05:40If I just do this, that's a four.
00:05:44Yes! Go, go, go!
00:05:48I'm killing him. Thank you. Thank you very much.
00:05:52I'm killing him now.
00:05:56My mom loves these shows. She's never been to a show, you know.
00:06:00Let's play a little observation test, okay? We have the four aces, club, card, spades, and diamonds.
00:06:04Now here's what I'm going to do. Right now, all four aces are face up, okay?
00:06:09I'm going to make each ace turn over one at a time. They'll all turn face down,
00:06:13hopefully without you catching me doing it, okay? But I want you to watch close.
00:06:17There's the ace of club. That's face up. There's the ace of hearts. That's face up.
00:06:21There's the spade. That's face up. And last but not least, the diamond.
00:06:25Watch this close. To make them turn over, I just cast a shadow over the card,
00:06:29and now the first ace, the ace of clubs, is face down. That was easy, okay?
00:06:33And we took a couple of bills earlier, so it's one at a time.
00:06:37We got the second ace to turn over. It's a little quicker. You just snap the finger,
00:06:41and now if you look, two aces are turned over. Clubs and hearts.
00:06:45Diamonds is next. Settle down. Thank you. All right. Keep your eye on the diamonds.
00:06:49All we do is that. That's one, two, three down. One left to go.
00:06:53That's one, two, three, four. Now, no, no, no. Don't applaud that.
00:06:57That was easy. Just point out that was easy. The hard part is to get them up again.
00:07:01Watch. All we do is we snap, and that's one, that's two,
00:07:05that's three, and that's four.
00:07:09Hold on. Wait a minute. Hold on. Wait. I think I lost something.
00:07:13Here, I'll tell you what. I'll get them back. That's one. That's two.
00:07:17That's number two. The third one's with the two, the three, and the four.
00:07:21And if you rip it, you can find the last one. But enough of this. Let's do a card trick.
00:07:25Is that bad? Is that bad?
00:07:29Thank you. Thank you. All right.
00:07:33I'll show you one more. Let's see. I lost that ace in the pack. Let me get that back out wherever it is.
00:07:37There it is, the ace of spades. And we're going to try this.
00:07:41We're going to try something else, something a little bit harder this time, okay?
00:07:45So I'm going to just take the cards. I want you to watch them close.
00:07:49We're going to make each ace vanish one at a time, starting with the ace of clubs.
00:07:53We just rub the cards, and the first ace, the ace of clubs, will completely vanish.
00:07:57It really goes. Watch the ace of spades. Keep your eye on the spades.
00:08:01The second ace will completely disappear. Yeah, this is unbelievable.
00:08:05I mean, if I wasn't married, I'd marry myself.
00:08:09Ace of hearts is next. You just rub, and there goes the third one.
00:08:13And if you watch the last one, the ace of diamonds goes like this.
00:08:17Now, the hard part is not making the aces disappear. The hard part is to get them to reappear.
00:08:21Watch this close. You just do like this. Rise, rise, rise.
00:08:25That's the first one. That's the diamond.
00:08:29It's just like that. That's the ace of clubs. Watch the cards close.
00:08:33Nothing in the hands. You just say, rise. That's the third one.
00:08:37And the last one. This is for you, Mom. That's the last one, and that's all four aces.
00:08:49Thank you. Thank you very much.
00:08:53Okay, I think it's time for a quick miracle.
00:08:57Okay, now, here's what we're going to do. Thank you very much.
00:09:01That took really long. Don't look at me like that, Lisa, okay? Don't do it, please.
00:09:05All right. Quit laughing at me, please. Don't do that. Stop it.
00:09:09Okay, let's try something hard. Let's try a hard one.
00:09:13David, I'm going to go through the pack like this, and I'm going to go very slowly.
00:09:17I want you to just reach in there and take any card, and it doesn't matter because I know the trick.
00:09:21Take it out, and take your time there. First, look at it. Remember what it is.
00:09:25I'll look away. I'm not looking.
00:09:29Okay, everyone, please remember the card. Now, here's what we're going to do.
00:09:33I'd like you to place the card back in the deck, and don't forget what it is, okay?
00:09:37Put it back right on top. Thank you very much. You did a fine, fine job.
00:09:41Now, here's what I'm going to do. I'm in trouble. I forgot to hold something.
00:09:45But here's what we're going to do. I'm going to let you find your own card, okay?
00:09:49Oh, go ahead.
00:09:53Now, you two, as soon as you're done, let's just continue.
00:09:57David, do me a favor. Name a number, any number between 10 and 20, out loud.
00:10:0117. 17. Watch this close, David. I'm going to cut the cards one time.
00:10:05That's exactly 17 cards. Take your cards.
00:10:09Count them out loud. Let everyone hear you, out loud. Really get into it.
00:10:131, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,
00:10:177, 8,
00:10:219, 10, 11,
00:10:25Oh, sorry. 13, 14, 15,
00:10:2916, 17. Not only that,
00:10:33not only that, David, but look, the 17 cards should look familiar.
00:10:41No, no, no. Okay, now, don't applaud too much.
00:10:45Don't applaud too much. That was really easy, okay? I'm going to tell you how I did that, okay?
00:10:49See, what I did, I cheated, and I feel really bad. This is a trick that all of you can do.
00:10:53It's really easy to do. See, John named 17. He could have named any number. You called out 17.
00:10:57Let's say, for example, you, I'm sorry, David. I knew you weren't John.
00:11:01I was talking to John, okay? So just stay out of our conversation.
00:11:05So, what it was, it was pretty easy. Whatever number you named, I did what we call
00:11:09in the magic business, estimation. Let's say you would have said 10 cards.
00:11:13All I have to do is go like that and estimate 10 cards. Now, I know that this is
00:11:17exactly 10 cards, and the reason I know is I can tell by the thickness of the cards.
00:11:21David, you can do it, too. Do me a favor. Take a look at the thickness
00:11:25and try to cut off exactly 10 cards. Let's see how close you get, okay?
00:11:29And show me the thickness. Let me see. Okay, that's eight.
00:11:33You missed by two, but you tried. We'll count them in a minute. We'll count them in a minute.
00:11:37Put them face down in front of you. You're doing really good. I'm very proud of you, okay? You really are.
00:11:41That's a nice shirt, too. It'll come back in style. You keep wearing it.
00:11:45John, try to get exactly 10.
00:11:49Try to get exactly 10. Let me see the thickness. Okay, that's probably 11.
00:11:53So neither one of you got it right, but you're trying. That's good. That's good. Would you try to just try to get
00:11:57exactly 10? Oh, that's good. That's
00:12:01a little heavy. That's 15. 15. We'll count them in a minute. Put them right there.
00:12:05Now, let's just say, for example, everybody cut 10 cards. That'd be 10, 20, 30.
00:12:09There should be 22 left. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,
00:12:139, 10, 11. Tell you what, you guys were off. But you did get 10, 10,
00:12:1710.
00:12:25Thank you. Thank you very, very much.
00:12:29Now, you know what it is. You know what it is. I sit here. Pardon me?
00:12:33I thought you said Sweet William. I like what you said. That's okay. You call me whatever you want.
00:12:37It's okay. God, I don't feel good. I just
00:12:41don't feel good. All right. Does anybody have a dog? I'll push them into a balloon.
00:12:45What do I have? Pops them? I would never pop them.
00:12:49Maybe I would, but I wouldn't probably. But let's try a little trick. You know, I'm
00:12:53using all the cards, and that makes this really confusing, because I know you're trying to
00:12:57check off my cool tie and everything. So what I'll do is I'll do a trick, and instead of using
00:13:01the whole deck, we'll use just a few cards. I need someone to help me out. Someone
00:13:05let's see. Here's a gentleman. We give him a big round of applause.
00:13:09Stand right over here.
00:13:13How do you do, sir? Nice to meet you. You're at the
00:13:17IYQ convention. That's fantastic. You're the only guy that made it.
00:13:21Yeah, I know. I knew that was coming, and I like you more.
00:13:25I really do. Okay, we're going to do a little trick together, and your job
00:13:29What is your name? Glenn. Glenn. Your job, sir, is to cheat me on it.
00:13:33Okay, make sure that I don't cheat. Now, for this trick, we're going to use 20 cards
00:13:37to make it easy to follow. I'll give them to you in groups of 5 just to make it easy.
00:13:41That should be 5. Count them and just verify to the whole group how many you got.
00:13:45Very good. That was very good. Go ahead and put them together. You're doing a great job.
00:13:49You'll be able to get rid of that pin soon. Okay, 5 more is
00:13:53Nobody has ever gone this high before.
00:13:57Put them together. Okay, 5 more is 15. Correct?
00:14:01Okay, just make sure, because I don't want to cheat. And 5 more makes a grand total of
00:14:0520 cards. Do me a favor. Shuffle them up. Mix them up real good. And what we're going to do
00:14:09Oh, I used to shuffle like that. That's cool. That's awesome. Mix them up real good.
00:14:13And, sweetheart, would you hold the rest? I was talking to John, but no, that's okay.
00:14:17Shuffle them up. Shuffle, shuffle, shuffle. You're doing a good job. Thank you very much.
00:14:21Now, folks, here's where everyone has to help out. What I want you to do, Glenn, is count
00:14:2510 cards into my hand, out loud, one at a time. Everybody count with them. This is important.
00:14:29Okay? Everybody. 1, 2. Hold on, folks.
00:14:33If you don't know the words, you can honk. Okay? Get into it. Come on. Pretend you're at a party.
00:14:373, 4, 5, 6, 7,
00:14:418, 9, 10. Thank you. Give Glenn a big round of applause.
00:14:45You did a good job. Thank you very much, Glenn. Don't go away. Don't go away. There's more.
00:14:49There's money in this. Okay, would you do me a favor? Would you take these cards and please
00:14:53sit on them, please? Sit on top of them. I'm just kidding. But no, if you want
00:14:57to do it, that's fine. Cool. Fine. No, stay on top of them. Do me a favor. Count those.
00:15:01There should be 10 left. Count them out loud. Everybody, come on. 1,
00:15:052, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,
00:15:098, 9, 10. Give Glenn one more round of applause.
00:15:13Don't go away. Stay here just for a minute. Thank you.
00:15:17Would you do me a favor? Would you sit on the other 10? Thank you so much.
00:15:21Make sure they're all the way in the middle. That's important. Okay? Remember, this is my trick, big guy.
00:15:25Okay? Don't forget that. Now my beautiful assistant will hand me the pack.
00:15:29Thank you. All right. Now, can everyone see all the cards that are left? Everyone just say yes.
00:15:33Okay? They're all different. Look, I'm going to show everybody. They're all different.
00:15:37Stand up. This is not the Marriott. Okay? All right. Watch close. Now, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to
00:15:41let Glenn take out any one of these cards. So let me explain what's going to happen.
00:15:45Whatever number that Glenn picks, I will make that many of her cards
00:15:49disappear from underneath her. What is your name? Nicole. Okay. So, Nicole,
00:15:53if he picks a 10, we'll do it with all 10 cards. And he picks a card or a 10. And if it is
00:15:57a 10, I'll do them one at a time, very slowly, for your
00:16:01entertainment's pleasure. Okay? Now, if he picks a 9, we'll do it with
00:16:05a 9. 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Whatever number he picks, that many
00:16:09will disappear and go over to her. Now, would that be a good trick? Would that be a
00:16:13good trick? I don't do that trick. You people
00:16:17kill me. See, I do a better trick. Not only will they disappear
00:16:21from Nicole, but they'll go under you. If you know what I mean, and I think you
00:16:25do. Okay. Glenn, are you ready, sir? Okay. As I go like
00:16:29this, just say, stop. Stop. Right there? Yeah. Okay. 3. Is that
00:16:33okay? You sure? Yeah. Okay. So I have to make 3 of Nicole's
00:16:37cards disappear and go over to her. Now, unfortunately, neither one of you will
00:16:41feel anything. I'm very, very sorry. Okay? John, you may get a little quiver as they go
00:16:45by. It's going to be something different. Okay. Here we go. Get ready to receive.
00:16:491, 2. That's good. One more. Push. Push. Good.
00:16:533. Very good. Take out your 10 cards. Count them out loud. Let everyone hear
00:16:57you. 1, 2, 3, 4,
00:17:015, 6, 7. We are done. Count yours out loud.
00:17:05Out loud. 1, 2, 3,
00:17:094, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
00:17:1311, 12, 13. Give them all a hand.
00:17:17Thank you very much. Thank you very much.
00:17:21Thank you, Nicole. God, we're having a good time now.
00:17:25David, you got one. You weren't even
00:17:29in the trick. I'll tell you what. You know what, folks?
00:17:33Folks, I've got to be honest with you, okay? This has really taken a lot out of me, okay?
00:17:37And I usually, I get up here and I do the last trick of the show and it's really killer, but
00:17:41as I say, I'm a little tired. So instead of me doing the last trick, I think it's only
00:17:45fair. We have a special guest in the audience. He's always wanted to be a magician.
00:17:49And he said, Bill, do me a favor. At the end of your show, call me up
00:17:53there and I'll do a special trick. I said, well, do you know any? He says,
00:17:57no. He says, I want you to teach me one. And he says, would you be able to teach me
00:18:01one, Brian, the star? So I said, no. And anyway,
00:18:05he was very persistent. Finally, the persistence paid off. Ladies and
00:18:09gentlemen, let's have a big round of applause for David.
00:18:13Thanks a lot.
00:18:17This is going to be great. What are you going to do for us tonight?
00:18:21Oh, very good. I don't blame you.
00:18:25Here's what we're going to do. First of all, David, I don't think they're buying this. Okay. They're not buying
00:18:29this at all. So let's, let's just tell them the truth. Okay. We did, we got together last
00:18:33night in my room, three o'clock in the morning. So now,
00:18:37we watched a little Sacrifice. But anyway, I
00:18:41taught him a trick. And I think that all of you, even you, Lisa, will agree
00:18:45that this is the best trick you have ever seen. And if he does a good job,
00:18:49I think maybe, just maybe, he'll get a standing ovation.
00:18:53No, not just you. You've got to earn it. Okay. Are you ready? Okay. Let's start
00:18:57just like we rehearsed. You ready? Places.
00:19:01Perfect. Okay. On the count of three, on the count of three, we'll begin.
00:19:05Ready? One, two, three.
00:19:09Hey, David, how's it going? Come on. Remember me?
00:19:13Great to see you again, man. How's everything going? Pretty good. Excellent.
00:19:17Hey, remember that, remember that invention I told you about? Yeah. Finally finished
00:19:21it. Oh, yeah. It came out great. I brought it with me. No, you didn't. I got it with
00:19:25me. Did you see it? Yeah, I did. Did I tell your friend? Yeah. That is your friend?
00:19:29Yeah. That's awesome. Okay. Great to see you, then. Now, what do you think?
00:19:33Tell the truth. What do you think? What's the matter? You're, what's the matter?
00:19:37I think the cheese ripped off the crack of it.
00:19:41Okay. Are you looking at me when you say that or what's in my hand?
00:19:45Now, David, I know this sounds crazy, but what I'm holding is the world's
00:19:49first invisible deck of cards. Now, I know it sounds ridiculous, but after all of
00:19:53you see what David can do, I think all of you, even you, sir, will be impressed.
00:19:57David, do me a favor. Take the cards and shuffle them up nice and fancy. Shuffle them up.
00:20:01Now, here's what we're going to do. We're going to... You've got to take
00:20:05them out of the box first. I'm sorry. That happens. That was my fault. Just pretend.
00:20:09Take them out of the box. Take them out of the box. You're doing a good job. Give the box to your daughter.
00:20:13Okay. I'm sorry. Hold the box. Shuffle them up, Dave. Shuffle, shuffle, shuffle, shuffle. You're doing a good job.
00:20:17That's very good. God. Okay. Now, David, here's what I want
00:20:21you to do. I kind of want you to look out over the crowd. It's almost like looking at a
00:20:25field of flowers. Yeah. Okay. There's a few weeds here and there, but we won't
00:20:29point them out. What I want you to do, David, I want you to go up to any person
00:20:33you want, somebody out there, ask them to pick a card in your best magician voice.
00:20:37Good luck to you. Go ahead, Dave. Shuffle them up as you're walking. Boy, do you believe this guy?
00:20:41Jesus. Good. Is he with you? God, he'll do anything. Go listen to me, Dave.
00:20:45Oh, you got someone? Would you stand up? Give her a round of applause. What is your name?
00:20:49Oh, hi, Tanya. How are you doing? Wow. Did you pick one already?
00:20:53Yeah. You got it already? Look at it. Remember what it is. Hold it up and show it around
00:20:57to everyone. I can't believe they're doing this. I just think that's unbelievable.
00:21:01All right. You remember the card? You do? Boy, that's good. Okay.
00:21:05All right. Tanya, take the card, turn it upside down, turn it over,
00:21:09and put it back in the deck while it's turned over. Don't forget the card.
00:21:13You can be seated. Give her a big round of applause. And David, you bring the cards back up here
00:21:17to me. Come on. Thank you. Get the box back from her.
00:21:21Put the cards back in the box, close the box, and throw me the box, David.
00:21:25Throw them to me. Thank you, sir. You did a fine, fine job. Thank you.
00:21:29Now, please, please, don't applaud too much. Let's make sure it's a quick work.
00:21:33First of all, how many of you think David did a pretty good job? Pretty good job.
00:21:37So let's make sure it's a quick work. Now, all of you have to agree with me.
00:21:41Tanya, Chicky Baby, Hot Mama, that's your Vegas name, you took a card and put it in here
00:21:45upside down. So one card in the deck is down, all the rest are up.
00:21:49Now, everyone has to agree, if the cards are turned over, matches the card that Tanya
00:21:53is thinking of, David would deserve a much bigger round of applause than what he just
00:21:57received. Am I right or wrong? Am I right?
00:22:01But, if for some silly, strange reason, the card
00:22:05does not match, I think we should all turn it on loud and beat the heck out of David.
00:22:09Are you listening? Are you listening?
00:22:13John may take a swing at you just to do it there, David. All right.
00:22:17One card in the deck is turned over, one is down, all the rest are up. Tanya, for the first
00:22:21time, name your card out loud. Okay, she said the
00:22:25King of Diamonds. Now, it's the King of Diamonds. I'm sorry, we got a problem
00:22:29here. I'm sorry, Tanya, there was a little problem. What was the card?
00:22:33I don't think you understand this. It's okay, ladies and gentlemen,
00:22:37Tanya said the Two of Clubs. Watch this, folks, I'm going to go through the deck.
00:22:41Every single card in the deck is up except one card
00:22:45way, baby. One card is down. Take it out, David, hold it up high, show it
00:22:49to the crowd.
00:22:53I can't believe it.
00:22:57I can't believe it.
00:23:01Thank you. Thank you very much, David.
00:23:05Everyone, I hope you enjoyed the show.
00:23:09Hey!
00:23:13Hey!
00:23:17Hey!
00:23:21Hey!
00:23:25Hey!
00:23:29Hey!
00:23:33The Mental Photography deck, what a great deck this is.
00:23:37This is a trick that I use quite often. It's based on
00:23:41Michael Skinner's routine from Classic Sampler. However, it's a little different
00:23:45here and there, you'll see. And I also have a bonus ending, which I didn't do on the
00:23:49performance that I'm going to tell you about now, which really takes this trick
00:23:53to another place, and it's very good. First of all, if you're not familiar with the
00:23:57Mental Photography deck, what it is, it's a rough and smooth deck, which
00:24:01means that it allows you to show these cards very loosely as
00:24:05blank cards. However, whenever you want, you can make cards appear or
00:24:09disappear as you need it. And what it is, it's rough and
00:24:13smooth. It's a chemical that's placed on the card. This card has no face
00:24:17and a back. The next card has a face and no back. So because of the chemical,
00:24:21those two cards will stick together, which allows you to spread them or
00:24:25turn them over in clumps, and anyway, the faces will never show.
00:24:29The routine that I do, I usually do in a throwing
00:24:33situation. It's perfect because it's quick, it's visual, and if you just
00:24:37got to do a couple of tricks, this one will really get them. As you saw by the
00:24:41performance, the reaction is just unbelievable.
00:24:45So what I do is I start off, I take the cards out of the box, and I put the box
00:24:49off to the side, and I say, this is what a deck of cards looks like
00:24:53before they leave the factory. That is, before they're printed. And all I'm
00:24:57doing there is just applying pressure so I can show both sides.
00:25:01Then what I do is I lift up the back end, and I get a break over
00:25:05any face card, somewhere near the middle. I'm going to stand so I can show
00:25:09you the next move. The next move, I do a pass of Steve
00:25:13Braun's called the Midnight Shift, which is very, very visual and fits
00:25:17this perfect. There's been versions of this shift, but I still think Steve's
00:25:21is the best. Basically, it's the Herman pass with a twist,
00:25:25and I literally mean that, so I'll show you what it looks like. First of all,
00:25:29it's a very visual thing. What happens is you have the break on the
00:25:33face card, and you're going to start the Herman pass. The Herman pass
00:25:37is done like this. Your empty hand comes over the top, holds the deck
00:25:41in overhand position. As your other hand turns the cards halfway
00:25:45out and keeps them on a horizontal plane, and
00:25:49they touch the inside of your hand. Now, as you turn your hand
00:25:53towards you, the cards close up and the card comes into view.
00:25:57I'm going to do that one time so you can see how it looks. It looks like you
00:26:01just take the cards, turn them over, and the card appears. So that's the first production.
00:26:05Actually, this is what cards look like after they're printed. I say, but maybe
00:26:09I'm going too fast, and as I deliver that line, I'm getting
00:26:13set for a side-steal color change. So what I did was I used
00:26:17my fingers at the bottom to push this card halfway over.
00:26:21So now it's halfway over. All that's left is to come away and wave
00:26:25my hand over the deck, and then I spread saying, let me start over.
00:26:29Now, let's pretend we're in Las Vegas and we're playing poker. And let's
00:26:33pretend that I have a 7 and a 2 and a 5 and a queen and a 7.
00:26:37To do that, all I'm doing is ruffling up a little bit in the back
00:26:41each time so I make sure I have a face card. I end
00:26:45it with, but I don't have those cards. You don't need to do the side-steal there.
00:26:49But I don't have those cards. But if I did have them, they'd look like this.
00:26:53And all you do is make a cut showing a card. You say, but
00:26:57of course, that's not a real card. I take it off and I show
00:27:01it back blank. I say, let's see what would happen. Let's try to put a back
00:27:05on the card. Watch the card. All I do is this. Uh-oh.
00:27:09And I make it look like I missed. Something went wrong. I say, oh, I'm
00:27:13sorry. I knocked it down to the bottom. Now, as you're reacting there,
00:27:17I turn the cards back, face up, and I get into
00:27:21a side-steal position and I say, let's start over. This is what cards
00:27:25look like before they leave the factory. Here's how they look after they're
00:27:29printed. I say, not just one, but every single
00:27:33card in the deck. And all I have to do there, it works by itself,
00:27:37just learn to dribble. I'm applying pressure with the index finger, pushing
00:27:41down and relaxing my fingers and thumb and just letting
00:27:45them dribble. Because they're cut long and short, you don't have to worry about the
00:27:49faces. Now, what I do, I don't want to square them up after the dribble
00:27:53because I want to, I do want to square them up first. I'm sorry. You square them up
00:27:57and then you say, not just the faces, but also the backs.
00:28:01You now take the cards in overhand position, turn them on their
00:28:05edge so the backs face the audience, and let them dribble down into your
00:28:09hand. Now, here's where you don't want to square because you want to be able to
00:28:13take these and very casually flash all the cards. That really
00:28:17looks good there. Okay? And then at the very end, I say, but remember what I
00:28:21said in the beginning, this is what cards look like before they leave the
00:28:25factory. And again, what I'm doing there, again, is the side
00:28:29feel, so I'm getting it into my hand. But when you have the card in your hand, when you come
00:28:33across, make sure that that card goes square and continue
00:28:37the moment. You know what I mean? The movement, rather. Don't just leave the card
00:28:41and pull your hand away. Continue like you were waving over the cards
00:28:45like that. Okay? Now the bonus thing, and this is in
00:28:49the, if you have the Ron Wilson book, real quick, in the Uncanny Scott
00:28:53he has a card box that is cut a little bigger so when he puts
00:28:57these cards inside, as he closes the flap,
00:29:01these cards fall into his lap. It's a great thing for here.
00:29:05You start saying the lines now. I hope you enjoyed that, but promise me
00:29:09whatever you do, if anybody asks you how it's done, just say you don't know and I put them away during the
00:29:13performance. Normally I'm using Ron Wilson's card box. I put
00:29:17them away. They get lapped. I'm closing the box and I say, but if anybody
00:29:21ever does ask you, just tell them it was real magic. And now you're ripping the
00:29:25card box apart so the gimmick cards are gone. There's nothing to see, nothing to ask
00:29:29for, and it's good. Hello.
00:29:33Now the Startling Ace Production. You're set up from the top
00:29:37down are the four aces, and that's it.
00:29:41So you begin by, I always begin by using a line. I say to somebody, name
00:29:45any two red kings. Sometimes they'll ask, sometimes they don't,
00:29:49but whatever two they name, diamonds and hearts usually, you upshot
00:29:53them from the pack, take them out, turn the deck
00:29:57face down in your hand. Now this is a one-ahead ace production, and
00:30:01the end of it has a real visual production that I don't think Marlowe ever published
00:30:05with Marlowe. The first part also is taught to me by Marlowe, and I've combined these
00:30:09two together. It's a real good one-ahead ace production, and it's
00:30:13done like this. You strip out the two red kings, and you get a break under
00:30:17the top card. You place the two kings face up on the pack, doing the
00:30:21Brawley addition, and then you peel one king off and put it
00:30:25underneath. So what you did was you loaded the top card between the kings, okay?
00:30:29So you show the kings in this position, hearts and diamonds,
00:30:33put them on top of the pack, give a squeeze, and when you do that, one card
00:30:37appears in between. Now as you're showing this card, this hand's
00:30:41going forward. As your other hand's going backwards,
00:30:45you're getting a break on the top card as you go backwards. So now you have
00:30:49another break. You're now going to put these back on top, lifting up
00:30:53all four, and then peel off a single card, a
00:30:57single card, and let the double rest in your hand. You turn
00:31:01over this card, showing an ace. The nice part, now you're one ahead. You
00:31:05have another ace here that they don't know about, so you square for a second time,
00:31:09and it looks like a card just magically appeared there. You do the same
00:31:13thing as before. When you show these, you get a break under the top card,
00:31:17pick up all four, single, single. There's the double. You're one
00:31:21ahead. There's the second ace. Repeat the same thing for the third
00:31:25ace. Again, getting a break under the top card as you show
00:31:29these, single, single, and the double. Put the third ace
00:31:33down. Now comes the visual change. You place the deck
00:31:37off to the side. You square up these three cards in your hand,
00:31:41and you're going to do a D'Amico spread. The D'Amico spread is done
00:31:45like this. You have three cards in your hand. They're only aware of the two kings, however.
00:31:49So you're going to look like you're going to show the faces of the kings to the audience.
00:31:53And the way you do that, without letting the card in the middle show, is
00:31:57your hand comes over the card, fingers on top, thumb
00:32:01below, and about the center of the long edge. What's
00:32:05going to happen is your fingers are going to push
00:32:09the double over this way, and your thumb from
00:32:13underneath is going to pull the double. So it does like this.
00:32:17The cards will angle. Right now these are a little humid, so they're
00:32:21flaring out a little bit. But what it looks like is this.
00:32:25So you do the D'Amico spread. You can do it face up, show the faces.
00:32:29Then you turn them down. Do the same spread, this time
00:32:33showing the backs. At the end, you put them both together.
00:32:37It's important that you hold them at the fingertips. It should be extreme fingertips.
00:32:41Pan a mind, taking the last ace out, throwing it up, and catching
00:32:45it just by spreading. Okay? And that's the last ace.
00:32:49Here's a great trick, and what makes it great
00:32:53is it's a very easy trick to do because it's almost all Elm Street Counts.
00:32:57This was shown to me many, many years ago by a guy who has since
00:33:01passed away, Chuck Sanfield of Chicago. And when he showed me this trick,
00:33:05I thought I knew a lot about card magic, but it really fooled me bad.
00:33:09So you can imagine what it does to a lay audience.
00:33:13The trick was created by a guy named Roger Smith, and I know there's been a lot of variations of it.
00:33:17The only difference in this one is towards the ending when I reproduce the aces.
00:33:21But here's the effect. You start off the setup. It's on
00:33:25the top of the deck. You have a 4, a 3, and a 2.
00:33:29From the top down, 4, 3, 2. Suits really doesn't matter.
00:33:33What you do is you pick up the aces, and you arrange them in clubs, hearts, spades,
00:33:37and diamonds order from the face. Club, hearts, spade, and diamond.
00:33:41What I do is I pinky count three cards from the back, getting a break under three cards.
00:33:45And the pinky count is Darwin's Count,
00:33:49Darwin Ortiz, where you just pull down with your pinky.
00:33:53If you want, you can just spread them over and get a break.
00:33:57However you do it, just get a break on the top three cards.
00:34:01You talk about the four aces, and you place them on the deck face up.
00:34:05And you hold onto the deck, but you still have a break right now under seven cards.
00:34:09You're now going to do Ed Marlowe's At the Switch, which stands for
00:34:13Anytime Face Up Switch. And what you're going to do is you're going to
00:34:17lift the cards up. There's your break. You're going to lift up at the break,
00:34:21but you're also going to take one other card with it.
00:34:25So now you have the seven cards and a single card, which you're holding a break on.
00:34:29Okay? And you do that, as you say, watch the aces.
00:34:33Each one is face up. You start off. You don't lose your break.
00:34:37You start off. Your thumb peels off the first ace, the ace of clubs.
00:34:41You peel it square onto the deck,
00:34:45and then you pick it up at the bottom. As you peel off the next one, the ace of hearts.
00:34:49Now when you square up the ace of hearts,
00:34:53you're going to leave the cards at the break on top
00:34:57and continue by taking the ace of spades. Okay?
00:35:01So what you did was you switched out two aces down here.
00:35:05That was the card that you held a break on. Now these cards are put down,
00:35:09and you place the deck on the side.
00:35:13Just to make this more clear to you, I'm going to do it with the padder.
00:35:17Otherwise it seems like there's something missing. There's not, but I just want to show you
00:35:21because I know when you try to learn these things, sometimes it seems a little complicated,
00:35:25but it's not. So you show the four aces,
00:35:29add on the three, get ready for the at the switch. You say, look, the ace of clubs is face up.
00:35:33The ace of hearts is face up. The spades and the diamonds.
00:35:37So you put those down and then put the deck down. Okay?
00:35:41Now your situation is this. You have the four, three, and two
00:35:45face down between two aces. The other two aces, unbeknownst to the audience,
00:35:49are over here under the top card. Okay?
00:35:53So you pick these up and you say, watch. If I snap my finger, the first ace will turn
00:35:57face down. All you do is an Elmsley Count for the first one.
00:36:01For those of you that don't know the Elmsley Count, briefly, you hold the cards at the side
00:36:05on the long edge. Your thumb peels one card off into your hand.
00:36:09Now your thumb is going to push all the rest of the cards
00:36:13except for the last one over. So you're just kind of pinching
00:36:17this packet, pulling the bottom card out. It's going to look like you take
00:36:21another card on top of the diamonds, but actually what happens is the diamonds
00:36:25is replaced in the fingers as you take the whole
00:36:29block. And then you continue, take the next card and the
00:36:33next card. So it looks like the first ace turned face down. You now
00:36:37snap your finger. Here's where you're going to show the next ace turned over. Hold the cards
00:36:41in overhand position. Peel off a single. Peel off
00:36:45another single, but keep it spread. Then peel off a single
00:36:49and there will be a double left in your hand. The double
00:36:53goes on the bottom, but I like to keep it spread because everything is so
00:36:57clean here. The double card is being hidden by the edges of
00:37:01all the single cards. So it's a nice display. Now look, that's clubs and hearts
00:37:05down. Diamonds is next. All you do is square them up.
00:37:09Snap your finger. Do another roundly count, showing
00:37:13three face down. Snap your finger again. Do another
00:37:17roundly count, showing all four. Now that's pretty strong, just roundly
00:37:21counts. You see, now that's easy. The hard part is to get them up. You
00:37:25snap your finger. Hold your cards in overhand position. Your
00:37:29left thumb peels off three cards. You have a double left in
00:37:33your hand. You drop the double to the table. You say that's one.
00:37:37That's two. That's three. And that, my
00:37:41friends, is four. Wait for the reaction to die down. You say, but wait a minute.
00:37:45I lost the aces. Now you pick up the deck. This is where it changes.
00:37:49You say, look, the first ace is about here. You give the cards a
00:37:53riffle, but then you just do a slip cut. Okay? And the way
00:37:57the slip cut works, it's very easy. You just lift up about half the deck
00:38:01and your thumb holds the top card in place as
00:38:05your other hand cuts the top portion out and slams it on
00:38:09top with authority. So that's the first ace. The next
00:38:13ace, to make that one appear, you do the same slip cut
00:38:17except you don't slap it down. You put the two packets down. You say
00:38:21that's two. The third ace is with the two, the three, and the four.
00:38:25You peel them off, set them down. And the last ace, if you
00:38:29rip it, you can find the last one. You do a move of Balthazar Puentes
00:38:33where your hand goes to the packet, your index finger goes
00:38:37underneath, and what you're going to do is you're going to pull up and turn the
00:38:41card and then snap to finish. So it kind of looks like this.
00:38:45It gives you a visual riff, and you end like this, which is a pretty
00:38:49picture. Okay? Hi, everybody. I'm back again. Hey,
00:38:53listen. Do me a favor. Don't tell anyone you're about to hear what you're about
00:38:57to hear. I snuck back in the studio. Everybody's gone, so right
00:39:01now it's just me and a good-looking camera that's looking at me. I'm looking
00:39:05at him, and I'm starting to fall in love. So, camera, this talk, this next
00:39:09little talk, baby, is for you, if you know what I mean, and I think you do. Here's what
00:39:13I want to talk about. When you're performing magic and when you're doing
00:39:17magic, make sure, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you know that
00:39:21magic so well you don't have to think about it. And the reason is
00:39:25this. Your mind should be on the audience and what's going on in the room.
00:39:29If somebody drops and breaks a glass, you should be able to stop what you're doing
00:39:33and say, oh, that's the juggler. He'll be on next. You need to be fast with those
00:39:37kind of lines. You need to have almost a dictionary of your mind, in your mind,
00:39:41the things that you can say when the situation happens. Whatever you do,
00:39:45don't ignore it. Don't just go on with your doing, because if you're sitting there
00:39:49and you're concentrating on your magic, you're not giving the audience what they really
00:39:53deserve, and that's a great time. So, make sure that
00:39:57your mind, you've got to know that magic well enough where you can do it in your sleep.
00:40:01And I've done it in my sleep many times. They don't know it. They still pay me, but I was sleeping
00:40:05for the whole show. So was my audience. Don't get me wrong. But anyway,
00:40:09whatever's going on in that room, make sure you see it. If everyone's laughing and you notice
00:40:13one guy's not laughing, sir, either laugh it up or get out, okay? Don't make me
00:40:17come over there. But just have fun, you know. If there's a beautiful girl there,
00:40:21I do things like, hey, you're checking me out, aren't you? I don't blame you. Hey, I would too. But I mean,
00:40:25just have fun when you work. Make sure that, you know, when you're there,
00:40:29don't concentrate on the magic. Know your magic well enough where it's
00:40:33perfect. I'm not saying to, you know, slow down on the practice or not pay
00:40:37attention to detail. That you should know, and that you should always be the best
00:40:41you can be. But know it so well where you don't have to concentrate it. Concentrate
00:40:45on it. I concentrate. You see what I'm
00:40:49saying? And that's what I mean. So make sure you're in the moment. You know, have fun
00:40:53when you're working. Pay attention to the crowd and give them all you got every single
00:40:57time. Thank you and good night.
00:41:01You know, I've been doing these tricks for many, many years, and it's really great doing them now
00:41:05because this is the first time that I'm actually getting to learn how some of these things are done.
00:41:09And it's just, it's remarkable. The next trick is from
00:41:13Harry Lorayne's Close-Up Card Magic. It's a JOC trick, and it was called
00:41:17Apex Aces, except I added a couple of things and a production at the end
00:41:21which I will show you now. Okay, so it starts off
00:41:25it's a four ace vanish, and you use the four aces, and you
00:41:29begin by getting a break under the top three cards. The way I normally do that
00:41:33is either pinky count or just push over three, getting a break.
00:41:37Okay? So you pick up the aces from the table, and you
00:41:41you're going to make them vanish one at a time. You place the aces face
00:41:45up on the deck and lift up all seven. Peel off the first
00:41:49ace, give a rub, and when you snap your finger, you
00:41:53spread over one card, two cards, three cards,
00:41:57four cards, the fifth card you down jog, then you do a
00:42:01spread push off, because the ace is under the next card, but you want to
00:42:05bypass that, so do a spread, and then go all the way to the end.
00:42:09Okay? What this does, it allows you now to close up the packet
00:42:13and pick up at the jog for your next card. In the
00:42:17original, you only spread like five cards. I think it looks much better to spread
00:42:21through the whole deck. Anyway, you now pick up at the break
00:42:25below the jog card. You peel off the next ace, do the
00:42:29same thing, give a rub and a snap. This time you spread one,
00:42:33two, down jog the third card, then do your spread push
00:42:37off all the way to the end. That's the second ace going. Third ace goes the
00:42:41same way. Pick up on your jog, peel off the next ace,
00:42:45put this on top, and this time only spread one card and show,
00:42:49and then immediately do the spread push off all the way to the end.
00:42:53It's a real visual vanish of three aces. The last ace,
00:42:57there's many ways you can do it. I usually just do a side steal, making the
00:43:01last ace show, and again the side steal is just from the bottom of the pack,
00:43:05the card is pushed over into the palm, the hand is taken away
00:43:09with the card palm, and as you come across, remember to continue,
00:43:13continue the way the aces are gone. I now do Marlowe's
00:43:17quick false cut on the table, which is the same cut as Sam DeBell hop,
00:43:21you swing cut a third into your hand, swing cut another third, holding
00:43:25the break, drop these, cut at the break, drop these. Now you're
00:43:29ready for a visual production, which comes out of a
00:43:33Marlowe trick that he called rise, rise, rise, which was the production of a
00:43:37selected card. Here I'm using it for all four aces, okay? Your situation
00:43:41right now is this. You have a face down card,
00:43:45then face up ace, and it continues down, okay? So what you do here
00:43:49is you're going to do rise, rise, rise, and rise, rise, rise is a visual
00:43:53production that is done by copying the top card off in the rear
00:43:57palm. And the way that works is to just bring your hand
00:44:01down on the deck so it's past your fingers, the front end of the deck,
00:44:05this corner is right here on your hand, and then
00:44:09your thumb reaches down and just very lightly lifts up the top card.
00:44:13It takes a little knack, sometimes you'll get two, sometimes you'll get more, but if you
00:44:17practice it, it's pretty easy. Then in the performance, when you're going to
00:44:21make them appear, your other hand comes over for cover, so you
00:44:25do kind of a wavy motion up and down, and on the third time
00:44:29you lift off the card. Make sure you keep your fingers closed so there's
00:44:33no flashing here. Now this hand immediately picks up half
00:44:37the deck, and the index finger shoots the ace off.
00:44:41Then the other hand, with the card that's palm, picks
00:44:45up the card from the table, adding the palm card, as this
00:44:49hand goes down, cuts its root card, puts these in the
00:44:53center, and puts these on top. So actually what you did there
00:44:57is you just kept your setup on top, ready for the next ace.
00:45:01So this is repeated three more times, you go up with the rise like this,
00:45:05on the third time you just lift off the card, cut the card,
00:45:09push that forward, add on the palm card, put it in the middle. Again,
00:45:13the same thing, just be careful that your hands don't do what I just did there and knock
00:45:17the cards askew, or it'll show. That's the third one.
00:45:21Same thing, make sure you square them here, and then the last one, rise,
00:45:25rise, rise, on the third one, lift up, swing it
00:45:29down, and that's J-O-C's Aces a little differently.
00:45:33Hi, you know what, when I'm at a party and somebody takes out a
00:45:37bag of marijuana, I'm the first to leave. Sometimes they catch me and they get it back,
00:45:41but I can usually get out of there with a whole bag, you know, if you're quick about it. I tried
00:45:45heroin, but I couldn't put the spoon in my arm, and I don't do cocaine anymore, it became
00:45:49my turn to buy. But now that I've talked to you about drugs,
00:45:53I'd like to touch on a different subject. And the subject, I kind of
00:45:57forgot what it was, why the reason I'm sitting up here to talk to you
00:46:01right now, so if you have any questions, now would be the time.
00:46:05Okay, you don't have any questions, so what we'll do is we'll just kind of sit back until I
00:46:09can think of what in the world I'm up here for. And until
00:46:13you want to chill then, let's get back to the show. The next
00:46:17two effects belong to two friends of mine, Paul Cummings, a trick called
00:46:21Count on It, which I think first appeared in the New York Magic Symposium,
00:46:25and the second trick is a Dave Solomon trick.
00:46:29I'm not sure of the title, but it's cutting the tens, and it's just a brilliant presentation.
00:46:33What I did was I took both of these and combined them into one,
00:46:37and you'll see what I mean, how good it is. Anyway, your setup
00:46:41is the four tens are fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth
00:46:45in the bottom. And I'll tell you what that's for later on,
00:46:49but that's the only setup you do. So you start off, you're going to do Paul Cummings
00:46:53Count on It, and to do that, what I do is I need
00:46:57to get fifteen cards, and a card selected. So when I ask
00:47:01the spectator to select a card, I'm counting the cards as I'm spreading
00:47:05them. And I say pick out any card, so say he picks this card.
00:47:09But what I did, I know now I have fifteen, because as I was spreading
00:47:13in the beginning, I'm going three and two is five, eight, ten,
00:47:17thirteen, fifteen. It happens really that easy. Now you make sure
00:47:21you hold a break there, continue spreading, letting them pick a card.
00:47:25If he does reach and takes one of the fifteen, just make sure you put
00:47:29a card back, so you end up with fifteen. So anyway, he takes a card, and
00:47:33let's say for the demonstration, the card is the Jack of Spades. Now remember, I have
00:47:37fifteen here. When I close the packet, the spread, I get a break
00:47:41under the fifteen. So now I can tell the spectator, place your
00:47:45card on top, and all I do there is I spread the fifteen cards
00:47:49off at the break to my other hand, as his card is replaced.
00:47:53Now, I'm going to close the packet together, but I'm going to
00:47:57get a break under his card as I do it. So the best way
00:48:01to do this is when the card is replaced, don't pull it square.
00:48:05A spectator will never put it that square unless you do this.
00:48:09So keep it over a little bit, so that way when you close the pack,
00:48:13you can get a break under the selection. So now you have
00:48:17this situation. You have a break underneath
00:48:21sixteen cards. Okay? As you're pattering now, you say,
00:48:25look, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to have you find your own card. That way
00:48:29if I miss, the blame will go on you. And as you're talking, you're just
00:48:33casually riffling the cards, which makes it look kind of like you're not holding
00:48:37a break or anything. Now, as you're speaking, casually,
00:48:41you could do a pass, but I don't think you need to do a move here. So I just
00:48:45casually cut the sixteen cards to the bottom, and I hold a break.
00:48:49So now the position is the sixteen cards are on the bottom
00:48:53with the break, and the bottom card, the sixteenth one, is the
00:48:57selection, the jack of spades. Now you tell the spectator, name any
00:49:01number for between ten and twenty. Now,
00:49:05what happens if they say sixteen, you have a miracle, you can go right
00:49:09into the trick. If they say sixteen, what you're going to do is
00:49:13you're going to transfer the break to your other hand, an overhand position
00:49:17with your thumb. So you have a break there. You're going to do a swing
00:49:21cut with the cards into the other hand, then
00:49:25you drop the sixteen cards forward, upjogging them,
00:49:29and pull these cards back, strip these out,
00:49:33let them count the cards, they're sixteen and his card will be the last
00:49:37card. So that's the end of the effect. Now here's what happens when
00:49:41they name a number other than sixteen. I'm going to get back to the part
00:49:45where I have exactly sixteen selections on the bottom, and I'm
00:49:49holding them in this hand, okay? Sixteen pair of cards on the bottom. So let's say
00:49:53they say a number above or below sixteen. They could say
00:49:57seventeen, they could say eighteen, nineteen, or they could say below fifteen,
00:50:01fourteen, thirteen, twelve, eleven. They won't, usually they won't
00:50:05say ten or twenty, because you said in between ten and twenty. If they name seventeen
00:50:09it's very easy. You've got sixteen already, so all you have to
00:50:13do is drop one card with your thumb for seventeen, okay?
00:50:17If they say eighteen or nineteen, what I do in just
00:50:21a casual spread, and I say the words, now remember, somewhere
00:50:25in here is your card. I just casually spread, and then
00:50:29when I re-close the spread, say they said nineteen,
00:50:33I get to break over this card now, so now I have nineteen.
00:50:37So, either way, whatever number that they say, there's the card,
00:50:41there's the, I'm going to make sure I have three, four, five, six, seven,
00:50:45eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen,
00:50:49sixteen. So you've got your sixteen. If they say a number above, you just
00:50:53spread. If they say a number below sixteen, you can, for fifteen,
00:50:57just pick up a card, hold the break on fifteen, or if they say
00:51:01number fourteen, I have to lose two cards. So I get to the break,
00:51:05and then I go two more cards, and then I close. So now I have
00:51:09fourteen here. So that's how you get to the number. So just for
00:51:13demonstration, let's say they said seventeen. I have sixteen,
00:51:17my thumb drops one card, I now have a break on seventeen.
00:51:21I swing cut half the cards into my hand,
00:51:25like before, like this, I up-jog the seventeen, pull these
00:51:29back, I give these to the spectator. He counts them, one, two,
00:51:33three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen,
00:51:37fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, and the last card is your
00:51:41card. Good applause. What you're doing while he's
00:51:45counting those cards, in the middle of this spread are the
00:51:49four tens together. They're usually right in the center, they could be off a little bit
00:51:53depending on how many he chose here. That was the reason we had them
00:51:57set up on the bottom in the beginning, so none of the tens end up in here.
00:52:01All you've got to do is push with your thumb until you see the tens, and while
00:52:05he's counting, just cut these cards so two of the
00:52:09tens stay on the bottom, and two of the tens stay on the top.
00:52:13These are picked up, they're put back into the deck, and now you're going to
00:52:17do Dave Solomon's trick, cutting the tens. And the way these
00:52:21two tricks fit together, is now you're going to say to the spectator,
00:52:25I'm going to show you how to do it, it's not that hard at all, it's all done by estimation.
00:52:29And now you go into this really clever presentation of
00:52:33Dave Solomon's, which I just think is gold. And it's just like the other trick on the
00:52:37video, cut them high and tight, it's almost the same moves identical,
00:52:41but the presentation is so different, it makes the whole trick different.
00:52:45So you say to the spectator, let's say you said number ten, well what I would do
00:52:49is cut ten cards, and as you say that, you just pick up
00:52:53about what you think would be ten, just estimate, do a
00:52:57slip cut at that point, flipping the top card down, and then
00:53:01hold the break in between. Okay? So now you have
00:53:05a ten on top, at your break you have a ten, and the
00:53:09other two tens are on the bottom. So, you tell him, I want you to
00:53:13go like this, and try to cut off exactly ten.
00:53:17And say, use this as your guide, this is the presentation Dave came up with, it really
00:53:21tells us, use this as your guide and try to cut off exactly ten.
00:53:25He will do just that, he'll cut off what he thinks is ten, no matter
00:53:29what he cuts, I always look at it and say, okay you were close, that was eleven. We'll count them in a
00:53:33minute. Because it almost gives you credit to the audience, like you know how many he cuts.
00:53:37You never showed it you do, but it gives it intention. So now he cuts,
00:53:41you then address another spectator as you put these back,
00:53:45and you say, go ahead, he's off by one, you try it,
00:53:49so now they try it, as I'm looking at those, I'm
00:53:53shuffling the second, the bottom ten up to the top, with a
00:53:57post build shuffle, just by holding the bottom card there, and overhand
00:54:01shuffling, as I say, okay, you're minus a couple of cards, but that was pretty good.
00:54:05And what I'm doing is just shuffling the third ten to here. Now I go
00:54:09to a third person, I sit there, pretty good, you try it, she tries to cut ten,
00:54:13at this point I say, okay, that should be, let's see, if everybody's
00:54:17right, that should be ten, ten, and ten, that's thirty cards,
00:54:21there's fifty-two in a deck, that should be twenty-two left.
00:54:25One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen,
00:54:29I'm sorry folks, you missed, but you did get ten, ten,
00:54:33ten, and ten, and that's the start, and I thank you.
00:54:37One other little thing about the Paul Cummings trick and the
00:54:41David Solomon trick, is they're both really strong on their own,
00:54:45even if you did them on their own. What I like about Solomon's routine
00:54:49is that normally it's with aces, and you're doing an ace cutting, here it
00:54:53is with tens, and the spectator's minds are on cutting exactly ten,
00:54:57so they do not see the ending coming, and when you turn these over, it's really
00:55:01strong. I have people ask me from time to time
00:55:05what I think are some of the strongest card tricks in magic, and my
00:55:09answer is usually the same three card tricks that I'm going to name now,
00:55:13and that's the card on the ceiling, invisible deck, and the cards across.
00:55:17Not necessarily in that order, but out of performing for the last twenty-five years,
00:55:21these are three very, very strong tricks. The cards across
00:55:25that I use is a pretty standard method. I mean, I'm actually
00:55:29just copying three and putting them on, and they're switching places.
00:55:33And, you know, you would think that Lehman would figure it out and would think,
00:55:37well, he must have did this, but because of the use of
00:55:41having a number pick and having this many cards go across, I'm telling you
00:55:45they don't see it, they don't know, and it's one of the most talked about
00:55:49tricks that I do. When the show's over, they always want to know how I got the cards
00:55:53from over here to over there, okay? So
00:55:57it's pretty easy. All you have to do is learn how to palm.
00:56:01That's not easy, but I'm going to show you a method of
00:56:05palming and the method that I use. The first thing, the only thing you want to make
00:56:09sure is that you have a three spot somewhere near the bottom.
00:56:13And I'll tell you what that's for later on.
00:56:17So I start off, I get somebody up to help me, and he comes up, give him a round of applause.
00:56:21You'll see that in the performance. And I say, your job is to keep me honest.
00:56:25I'm going to give you some cards, 20 cards, and I give them to him in groups of 5.
00:56:29So that's 5, 10, 15, and 20 cards.
00:56:33Okay? So now he takes the 20 cards and I have him shuffle them up.
00:56:37Now, the reason that I put that three down near the bottom,
00:56:41once in a while I used to make the mistake and I would give him these 20 cards
00:56:45and all four threes would be in there unbeknownst to me.
00:56:49When it came time to force a three, I had none. So I would have to get out of it
00:56:53by forcing a two and then an ace and add them together. That makes three.
00:56:57And it was just weak. So now I always make sure that I'm prepared. I keep that three over there.
00:57:01So anyway, he shuffles the cards. When he's done, I tell him to count 10 cards
00:57:05into my hand out loud one at a time. Everybody count with him.
00:57:09So he counts them into my hand. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,
00:57:137. The 8th card I pull back and I keep jogged.
00:57:17Okay? 9 and 10. And then what I do
00:57:21is I pull up on the jog and I square up, giving a break under three cards.
00:57:25Okay? Now is when I'm going to palm these three cards, right before
00:57:29I'm giving them to this person to sit on. So I do it under cover of
00:57:33wow, that was great. Give him a round of applause. And as they applaud,
00:57:37I do my palm. Okay? The palm that I use is the palm
00:57:41to me by Bob Stencil. And what it is,
00:57:45it looks like you're just squaring the cards and on the last squaring action
00:57:49you seal them off. So it's basically the back end, the rear
00:57:53end of the cards are brought over and the corner hits
00:57:57the flesh of your thumb, like the web of your thumb. And when they contact
00:58:01there, the cards stay and these are turned. Okay? So that's
00:58:05the palm I use. I bring this hand up as this hand goes down. Okay?
00:58:09Now, you're going to be holding these out for quite a long time, but don't let it bother you.
00:58:13Nobody's going to see it because it's a fun trick to do. You give these
00:58:17cards to the first person, they sit on them. They think there's ten, but there's only seven.
00:58:21Now he counts the rest into your hand, one at a time,
00:58:25all the way up to ten. And you say, well thank you. Give him another round of applause.
00:58:29You don't even need to do that at this point. Just say something to him as you replace
00:58:33these cards on top. And the replacement here is just simple.
00:58:37Just bring your hand up and then curl your finger as it gets there to put the cards
00:58:41down. So it's just like this and like this. Okay? So now
00:58:45don't go away yet, sir. We're going to need you in a minute. But first, sir, would you please sit on the other ten?
00:58:49Thank you very, very much, sir. So now, what you do is you
00:58:53pick up the deck and for the first time you're going to explain what's going to happen.
00:58:57You say, I'm going to let him take out any card and I'm going to
00:59:01show you all the cards are different. Whatever number he picks, I will make that many
00:59:05disappear from her and go over to him. So what you do is you spread until you see a
00:59:09three and you cut the three to the top of the deck. Okay? You're now going
00:59:13to force the three on him and you do it with a psychological force.
00:59:17The three's on top. I swing cut half the deck into my hand
00:59:21and I hold a break over the three. So I have a break in the cards
00:59:25over the three. Okay? Now this is a psychological force.
00:59:29I start dropping packets as I say, sir, whenever you want, just
00:59:33call out stop. Now, when I say the word stop, the
00:59:37next packet I'm dropping is at the break. If he says
00:59:41stop there, that's the three. If he doesn't
00:59:45and he waits for another packet, that's the three. But
00:59:49in 99% of the time he will say stop on one of those two
00:59:53because he sees I'm dropping packets and he knows pretty soon the deck's going to be gone.
00:59:57If for some reason you get some guy that just won't say stop, all you do is
01:00:01drop these on top, keeping your eye on where that three is
01:00:05so you can pick it up, bend your finger over, get a break, and just start
01:00:09the same thing. This time he will say stop on the three.
01:00:13The rest is just showmanship and presentation. Oh, one little
01:00:17tip, too. When I palm the three, I always say, are you sure? Do you want to change your mind?
01:00:21They always say, yeah, I'm sure. If I
01:00:25see their lips start to move, I do want to change my mind.
01:00:29I right away go on like this. I say, now you want to change your mind? It's okay, all right.
01:00:33So I stop him before he can say anything if I see his lips going. But
01:00:3799% of the time, like on the performance, they won't change their mind.
01:00:41Now this is good because later on if people are trying to figure out the trick
01:00:45and some layman says, well, he must have somehow gave her more cards
01:00:49then the other layman will argue, yeah, but what if the guy picked a nine and it was nine cards?
01:00:53What if it was eight? So, you know, it makes the trick strong. Also,
01:00:57people don't remember sometimes that you handed the cards out.
01:01:01They sometimes remember that this guy counted the cards and they sat on them.
01:01:05So anyway, the rest is now showmanship. Watch the performance.
01:01:09You're going to make three go from here over to here. She counts the cards first.
01:01:13There are seven. Three are missing. The other person counts the other cards.
01:01:17There they are. Ladies and gentlemen, give them all three a big round of applause and that's pretty
01:01:21much it. I'm telling you, it's a great routine.
01:01:25I use it in close-up and I use it in my stand-up show all the time.
01:01:29There's a lot of times I work for four or five hundred people and this trick kills.
01:01:33So have fun with it.
01:01:37Okay, now we're going to talk about stealing other performers' material,
01:01:41which is really something if you think about it.
01:01:45So I wanted to talk to you about if you are going to steal the material, steal the best stuff.
01:01:49You know what I mean? Don't worry about it. What, are they going to sue you?
01:01:53No, seriously. The important thing about
01:01:57becoming yourself and doing your own show and being original
01:02:01and being creative is it's okay to watch other performers and pick up an idea
01:02:05here or there, but it's not okay to just take the line and think
01:02:09it's going to work for you just because it works for that person. Like, I'll give you an example.
01:02:13I do a line in my show where I'm working where somebody says to me something
01:02:17like, wow, Bill, you're really great. We love your show. And I say, not with that
01:02:21attitude, Bill. And it gets a big laugh. And I've had magicians
01:02:25that have taken that line and they use it kind of, they use it at the wrong time.
01:02:29Somebody will say to them, hey, could I take a look at your cards? And the girl
01:02:33will say, not with that attitude. And it's not funny anymore. You know, I see the
01:02:37response is almost like, I'm going to kill you, magician. So the important
01:02:41thing is, is the lines and why you say them. A line like that is funny
01:02:45when I say it because it's out of context of what they're talking about.
01:02:49They're giving me a compliment and they're saying something like, wow, we really love
01:02:53your show. Hey, not with that attitude. Then it's funny because it made no sense.
01:02:57But if you deliver a line like that and they're really talking
01:03:01to you like, would you mind if I said, not with that attitude, it's
01:03:05not funny anymore. And a lot of times magicians don't realize
01:03:09why lines are funny. And the reason they don't is because they just take
01:03:13them. People didn't give it to them and people didn't tell them about them.
01:03:17You know, and really work with them why it's funny. So, you know, it's
01:03:21really important a lot of times when you're doing your show and
01:03:25if you are doing some copying or you're learning a trick from a video
01:03:29or from a book and you're doing it word for word, you know, make sure those lines fit you
01:03:33because just because when they said it was funny doesn't mean that you're going to say
01:03:37it and it's going to be as funny. Sometimes it could be even funnier. And right
01:03:41now, this is pretty funny altogether. So take this last ten minutes of
01:03:45what I was talking about and use it. Go ahead, break them up. See if you ever get hired
01:03:49again. Bye. The Invisible Deck
01:03:53created by Eddie Field from Chicago and the presentation
01:03:57given to it by Don Allen from Chicago. One of the
01:04:01if not the greatest card trick of all time. For those of you
01:04:05that don't know what the Invisible Deck is, it's a deck of cards that has
01:04:09a chemical on it called roughing fluid and it holds the cards
01:04:13together in pairs. So an Invisible Deck is made up
01:04:17one side of the deck is all even cards. Okay?
01:04:21Two, four, six, eight, ten, queen. And the other side of the deck is all the
01:04:25odd cards. Aces, threes, fives, sevens, nines, jacks.
01:04:29The two black kings are on the odd side and the two red
01:04:33kings are on the even side. All the pairs in the deck
01:04:37add up to thirteen. For example, four plus nine
01:04:41is thirteen, so there's a nine on the other side. Eight and five is thirteen
01:04:45so on the other side of an eight there's a five, etc., etc. throughout the pack.
01:04:49The suits are easy to remember. Hearts are always with
01:04:53spades and diamonds is always with clubs.
01:04:57So the way the routine works is they pick an invisible card. You're going to find
01:05:01a thing named a card. So let's, oh, when I put the cards in the box, I always
01:05:05put the even cards where the cut out of the flap is. Okay? So that's the
01:05:09even side. This side. The other side is the odd side. So when they name
01:05:13a card, let's say they say the seven of clubs. Then I know the
01:05:17other side of the seven of clubs. Seven and six is thirteen, so I've got to look
01:05:21for the six of diamonds. So I take out the cards on the even side.
01:05:25I spread through. Once I see the six of diamonds,
01:05:29I loosely spread at that point. The chemical allows that card to separate.
01:05:33I turn it over and that's the thought of card. It is a miracle.
01:05:37Okay? What I can add to this is just my presentation,
01:05:41which I do believe takes this trick to another level. If you've
01:05:45ever seen me do a stand-up show, it guarantees a standing ovation. I know
01:05:49it's cheating and you're getting them to stand up for the president of the company or the CEO,
01:05:53but there's something I'm going to tell you about that too at the end. It's done a lot
01:05:57more for me than that. You saw the performance. What I do is I
01:06:01and I always do it the same way. I say, ladies and gentlemen, I would do the last trick by myself,
01:06:05but instead I have a guy here that's going to do the last trick. Ladies and gentlemen, give him
01:06:09a round of applause. Bring him up here. And I always try to bring up somebody that's important
01:06:13in the company. Once in a while, you'll get the president or CEO. They don't
01:06:17like to be the center of attention. You find it out before you don't use them, but
01:06:21you do want to use someone that everyone in the room recognizes. Someone that's
01:06:25high up there on the pole. This is a fun trick. So you bring him up on stage
01:06:29and I go through the little talk about, yeah, hey, they're
01:06:33not going to buy this. You'll see it all on the performance. Anyway, what I want to talk about
01:06:37what makes this routine build is, first of all, I'm telling the guy,
01:06:41ladies and gentlemen, what you're about to see is a miracle. And I think that all of you will
01:06:45agree when the trick is over that maybe, just maybe, this gentleman
01:06:49will get a standing ovation, but only if he deserves it. So that sets them up
01:06:53in the very beginning to stand at the end.
01:06:57What happens now, you have all the fun. I send him out in the audience and it was
01:07:01kind of hard to show in this performance the picture of big stage. When he goes
01:07:05out and he's walking through the crowd shuffling, I'm on stage, my
01:07:09mic is on, and I'm walking to this end of the stage saying, boy, do you believe
01:07:13this guy? I can't believe he's doing this. And the kids laugh while he's out there.
01:07:17So now he has a card chosen, puts it back, brings it back up.
01:07:21I say, give him a round of applause. Throw me the deck. Give him a round of applause. They applaud.
01:07:25Now is when the routine starts to build. After the
01:07:29applause starts to die down, I say, folks, hold on. Before we applaud
01:07:33too much, let's make sure the trick works. She took her card, put it in here upside down,
01:07:37one card is down, all the rest are up. All of you have to agree, if the card is turned over
01:07:41matches the card she's thinking of, he would deserve a much bigger round of
01:07:45applause than he just received. Am I right or wrong? And a few people
01:07:49say, right. And then I throw up my arm and say, am I right or wrong?
01:07:53And when I do that, the whole crowd, right. So now it's starting to build.
01:07:57I say, but if for some silly strange reason
01:08:01it's not the card, I think we should all turn into a mob and beat the heck out of so and so.
01:08:05Now that gets a bigger laugh, so it's building. I say, okay.
01:08:09For the first time, ma'am, name your card out loud. She says three of hearts.
01:08:13Whatever she says, I miscall it. Gets a big laugh. She says three of hearts.
01:08:17I say, okay. She said the king of diamonds. Okay. And that builds even
01:08:21more. So now the end of the trick is pretty much the invisible deck.
01:08:25You take it out and you show the right card and guaranteed that audience
01:08:29will stand up. If they're not standing up right away, I say standing ovation,
01:08:33standing ovation, standing ovation. And as I start pointing to the crowd,
01:08:37they're getting up. And what it is, it makes him feel like a star at the end of the show.
01:08:41And that's pretty much it. But here's what happened
01:08:45to me is that I realized after I did this routine about three or four times,
01:08:49you know, I felt a little guilty. Hey, I'm getting a standing ovation, but
01:08:53I'm cheating. It's the end of my show and I'm ending on a high point, but I really didn't get it.
01:08:57So I found something else that just kind of happened. I put this trick.
01:09:01Instead of doing it at the end of my show, I put it in the middle. Okay. And then
01:09:05I had another three tricks that followed it. And then I had a closing trick, whatever
01:09:09it may be. Okay. What happened was I now
01:09:13started getting standing ovations at the end of my show because
01:09:17by doing this trick in the middle, it conditioned the audience that
01:09:21hey, if they're having a good time, let's stand up. And it
01:09:25educated them. And now for the first time, you know, I've been doing it
01:09:29for about a good five years now. I get a lot of standing ovations. Whereas
01:09:33before, I could do a great show, make people cry. They had a great time.
01:09:37And they're applauding, but I just couldn't get them to stand. Now that I've educated them
01:09:41by doing this little trick with the invisible deck, I'm now at the end of my show
01:09:45getting people to stand up and really give me the ovation. So hey, it
01:09:49worked for me. Hope it works for you.
01:09:57Oh, he was awesome. The way he moved those cards
01:10:01from that one seat to the other, amazing.
01:10:05I think he's awesome. That's it, huh? That's it.
01:10:09John Davis.
01:10:13I've never had so much fun in all my life.
01:10:17Not many times you go around being a star.
01:10:21Look for me in Las Vegas. MGM.
01:10:25July the 30th. Is there a 30th of July?
01:10:29Oh, July 30th.
01:10:41Your name is Ken? That's right.
01:10:45Albert. I've seen you before, Albert.
01:10:49Bill Malone.
01:10:53Do it again.
01:10:57Bill Malone. There you go.
01:11:01Bill Malone. There you go.
01:11:05I thought he sucked. That hair was not real.
01:11:09There's no way that could have been his.
