00:00Hi, my name is Meryl and I'm from Germany.
00:03Please like and subscribe to MSA.
00:05I was born to parents who were rich.
00:07So rich that we had several maids, chefs, butlers, and drivers who worked around the
00:12clock for me and my crazy family.
00:14Dad was a genius on the stock trading platform, and mom was Miss World 1998.
00:20I loved my family, but they were so used to being spoiled that our entire lives revolved
00:25around money.
00:26Once when I was seven, I wanted to go camping, so Dad hired a set designer to create a camp
00:32set in our massive backyard.
00:34He also hired a weird mountain man to entertain us with stories and how to make a campfire.
00:39Who wants to hear a bear story?
00:41I do!
00:42I do!
00:43But my sister Cassidy, who was two years older than me, had her head stuck in her phone, so
00:48our camping experience eventually got boring.
00:51And soon after, as I grew up, our family hardly spoke to each other.
00:54When I was at school, I was crowned the computer genius.
00:58Cassidy was popular on social media, and we were both the hottest girls in school.
01:03Once when I was in eighth grade, ten boys asked me and my sister out all at once.
01:08These boys were so lame and too desperate for our liking.
01:11Cassidy and I had a checklist.
01:13The guys that we dated needed to be smart, rich, and hot.
01:17I wasn't worried so much about the rich part.
01:19I preferred intelligent guys, and in my school, all of them were rich, but also total smurf
01:25brains.
01:26And then one day when I was in the eleventh grade, a new boy joined our school and took
01:30my title of computer genius.
01:31I was kind of jealous at first, but when he smiled at me, I melted, having a huge crush
01:37on him.
01:38Would you like to go out for ice cream sometime?
01:41Will we be celebrating my new title in the school?
01:43Don't rub it in.
01:45After that, Gregory and I became an item.
01:47He drove a Ferrari and seemed much richer than my family because he lived in a mansion much
01:52bigger than mine.
01:54Once when I was in the twelfth grade, I decided to visit him at his house unannounced, and when
01:58I got to his house, his parents acted very weirdly.
02:02I'm here for Greg.
02:03Oh, he's upstairs.
02:05Okay, can I see him?
02:07When they finally let me in, I went to Gregory's room and found him busy with something on his
02:11computer.
02:12Greg?
02:13What?
02:14Who let you in?
02:15Uh, I'm sorry.
02:16I thought I would surprise you.
02:17He looked really angry.
02:18I hate surprises.
02:20Don't ever come here without calling first.
02:23I was so mad at him when I left, I felt like just breaking up with him.
02:27But then he came over to my house with flowers.
02:30I'm sorry.
02:31I shouldn't have snapped at you.
02:32Please forgive me.
02:33I don't know.
02:34You acted so strange.
02:36What was more important than me?
02:38I was actually planning a surprise trip for the both of us.
02:42To Thailand.
02:43I immediately forgave him.
02:44He was so romantic and he obviously loved me since he was spending so much on me.
02:49We went to Thailand just for the weekend.
02:51And my parents liked Gregory, so they also trusted him.
02:54While we were there, Gregory was all romantic at first.
02:58But then he changed when I wanted to go shopping for clothes.
03:01Did you bring your credit card to pay for all those clothes?
03:03What?
03:04But you said to take whatever you want and you'll pay.
03:07Yeah, but I didn't expect you to buy the entire store.
03:11Lucky for me, I did have my dad's credit card and managed to pay for my stuff.
03:15But the next day, I woke up to a shock.
03:17Gregory was gone.
03:19He left a note along with my plane ticket back home.
03:22He broke up with me on a note saying, Nice knowing you.
03:26Goodbye.
03:27What a jerk.
03:28I felt like my world was falling apart.
03:31Why would he break up with me this way?
03:33When I tried to call his number, it went to voicemail.
03:35I had to gather my strength and head back home and maybe then find out why he suddenly just
03:40left.
03:41Could it be because of all the clothes I bought?
03:44But when I got back home, my family was on edge.
03:47Everyone was pacing up and down and as soon as I entered, Dad rushed up to me.
03:51Meryl, where's my credit card?
03:54Someone hacked all my trading accounts using my credit card which is linked to every other
03:58account.
03:59So Meryl, you have to tell me where that credit card is.
04:02I was totally freaking out and tore my whole bag apart looking for that card.
04:07And then, I asked Dad to take me to Gregory's house.
04:10And when we got there, his mansion was empty.
04:12Oh my God.
04:13Dad, I think Gregory took all our money.
04:17Dad looked at me silently.
04:18At first, I thought he was going to blame me since Gregory was my boyfriend.
04:22But all he did was remain quiet.
04:24But Mom and Cassidy went berserk.
04:27We are broke because of your scheming, scamming boyfriend?
04:31How was I supposed to know he was a fraudster?
04:33He drove a Ferrari and you liked him, Mom?
04:36Yeah, I did, but he was still your boyfriend.
04:38You should have analyzed his intentions.
04:41And then Cassidy looked at her phone and screamed like someone died.
04:45AHHHHH!
04:46What happened?
04:47The Wi-Fi isn't working.
04:49How am I supposed to post my selfies from this morning?
04:52Ugh, I was supposed to pay for that today.
04:55But not anymore.
04:56Girls, I'll be in my office.
04:58I have no idea how I'm gonna fix this.
05:00I felt like everyone blamed me for this.
05:03And after two weeks, all our maids, chefs, butlers, drivers, gardeners, and pool cleaners
05:08quit because we couldn't pay them.
05:10Dad soon started investigating the matter, which was going to take some time.
05:13So we all had to adapt to some changes in our overly expensive lifestyle.
05:18We managed to keep the house, and since Dad paid our school fees for the entire year, Cassidy
05:23and I didn't have to change schools, which was a relief.
05:26Okay, so at school, nobody knows we're poor, so let's just try and keep it that way.
05:31Of course.
05:32Why would I want anyone to know that we're poor?
05:34Maybe because it's all your fault?
05:37I am sick and tired of everyone in this family blaming me for everything.
05:41That's just so much pressure.
05:42I started crying and Cassidy felt bad and apologized.
05:45Okay, I'm sorry, but our life just sucks so much right now.
05:49While we sat sulking about our poverty-stricken life, we heard Mom scream from the kitchen.
05:54Somebody help!
05:55Cassidy and I ran down to the kitchen and found the stove on fire and Mom trying to
06:00put it out with a tablecloth and it was reaching for the ceiling.
06:04Ah!
06:05It won't stop!
06:06Quickly, get some water!
06:07While Cassidy thought a glass of water would help, I brought the fire extinguisher and,
06:11thank God, was able to put out the fire.
06:14But now our entire kitchen was ruined and there was smoke all over the place.
06:18We gotta sit outside until the smoke is gone.
06:21Come on.
06:22We all sat outside on the stairs and Mom was in tears, telling me how she was trying to
06:26cook but ended up ruining the kitchen.
06:29I guess we'll have to order food.
06:30I hope they give us some discount.
06:32Right then, Dad came in, all smiles.
06:35Hello, everybody!
06:36Oh!
06:37Did you get our money back?
06:39Mom ran to Dad, smiling like a clown.
06:42Nope.
06:43I found a job.
06:44I'm going back to selling insurance.
06:45And once I make some good commission, I'll start trading again and get all the money that
06:49we lost.
06:50Well, Dad's plan didn't follow through the way he saw it.
06:53Three months went by and we were still struggling.
06:56And the only thing Dad could afford was food, so I decided it was time to get a part-time
07:01job as a waitress.
07:02But Meryl, if you work as a waitress, everyone in school will know.
07:06Yes, I know.
07:08But maybe if I work, I can help Dad pay for the Wi-Fi.
07:11Cassidy immediately smiled, but she wouldn't dare try to get a job since she cared so much
07:16about what people would think.
07:17The restaurant I worked at was a classy place, where all the rich and mighty dine.
07:22And one day, while I served a bunch of top-class businessmen, I overheard their discussion
07:26about new digital devices.
07:28I got excited and couldn't contain myself.
07:31I have plenty of ideas for new devices.
07:34Imagine having a portable hard drive, something almost like an iPod but with more space.
07:39That way, users will be able to carry all of their important information on one small
07:43iPod.
07:44We could even make it have a video presentation for business meetings.
07:47After I was done babbling, they looked at me stunned.
07:50Then the tall man with the big forehead was so rude.
07:54You can just get our order, please.
07:56I walked away feeling embarrassed.
07:58And then, the next worst thing happened.
08:01When I waited at my next table, they were girls from my school who envied my sister and
08:05me all the time.
08:07And the worst of them all was Charlotte.
08:09Wow, you work as a waiter?
08:14This must be my lucky day.
08:15Wait, I have to take a picture of this.
08:17Oh, Charlotte, get over yourself.
08:20I work here and earn my own money, unlike you, a spoiled brat forever.
08:24Ugh, that's no way to talk to your customers.
08:26Where's the manager?
08:27I want to file a complaint.
08:29He's out to lunch.
08:30So, can I take your order?
08:32It was the most dreadful day of my life.
08:35But the next day when I went to school, everyone called me Waiter Girl, since Charlotte posted
08:40my picture on Instagram.
08:42And during recess, while Cassidy and I were minding our own business, Charlotte started
08:46being so annoying with her stupid minions.
08:48We've noticed that you two bring lunches to school these days.
08:53Should we open up a charity fund dedicated to the richest in the school?
08:57Oh, let me rephrase.
09:01The poor smelly girls of the school.
09:03Shut up, chat roulette.
09:06Cassidy got up angrily clenching her fist, and I calmed her down.
09:09Don't worry about her, Cassidy, she's just a jealous girl who has no goals.
09:14At least my goal is not to be a waiter.
09:16Hahaha.
09:17Yeah, your goal is probably to be a brainless peanut all your life, since you get big fat
09:23zeros on all your tests.
09:24Charlotte eventually left us alone, but then after school, Dad picked us up in a run-down
09:29car, and Charlotte got the entire school to come and watch us get in it.
09:34Oh my gosh, where did your dad buy this junk from?
09:38At that point, I had had enough of Charlotte's farty face.
09:42So I pounced on her, and she couldn't even fight back, so I let her go.
09:46Just leave me and my family alone.
09:48Our financial life is none of your business.
09:51Dad was shocked when we got home, and he told us that his contract at work was about
09:55to end.
09:56So he sold his Land Rover and got us a scrappy car.
10:00Life was getting even worse for us.
10:02I put on my waiter clothes and got out of the house to work an extra shift.
10:06While I was at the restaurant, I found my manager watching MSA.
10:10Wow, you like MSA?
10:11Yeah, is that a problem?
10:13No, no problem.
10:14I was just surprised.
10:15There was a guy who came looking for you.
10:18He left his number.
10:19When I called the number, a part of me was hoping it was Gregory calling to say he was
10:23sorry and he wanted to give us all our money back.
10:26But it wasn't.
10:27Hello?
10:28Are you looking for me at the restaurant?
10:29Yes.
10:30Our investors liked your pitch that you suddenly decided to blurt out while you were serving
10:34our table.
10:35We have an offer for you if you could put all those ideas on paper.
10:39Yeah.
10:40Yes, I can.
10:41I left my extra shift, went home, and started putting ideas together for new devices.
10:45I didn't want to say anything to my family yet.
10:47I just wanted to get the offer first.
10:50The next day, I met with those business people again, and I was blown out of my mind when
10:54they told me I was going to get $100,000.
10:58I was on cloud nine.
11:00I immediately signed the contract, and they even asked me to stay in contact if I had any
11:04other ideas.
11:05I couldn't believe this was actually happening.
11:07And when I showed my family the check, we celebrated all night.
11:12Meryl, you just saved our lives.
11:14Does this mean we can get our chef back?
11:16Because I'm getting really tired of eating baked beans every day.
11:20Not just yet.
11:21Dad needs to first work his magic on the trading platform, and then maybe.
11:26I was so happy to see my family relaxed again.
11:29Cassidy wanted us to go shopping the next day since all of our heels were starting to
11:33lose their texture.
11:34Two pairs and that's it, right?
11:36We need to use all this money wisely.
11:38Yes, I know.
11:39But what if I see a third pair that I like?
11:42Cassidy.
11:43Just before we could head off to the mall, Dad screamed from the living room.
11:47Meryl, you have to see this.
11:49When I went to check what he was talking about, the news was on and Gregory was handcuffed and
11:54sentenced to prison for the next 20 years for being one of the biggest fraudsters in the city.
11:59And the parents that he said were his parents were just actors.
12:03I felt so relieved, and Dad eventually got a call from the credit card company with good news.
12:08All his money would be returned.
12:10Soon after that, I completed school, got my degree in computer science, and became the
12:15next richest person in our city.
12:17And then one day, I even had my own business meeting at that classy restaurant.
12:21Can I take your order?
12:23Charlotte, you work here now?
12:25Yes, so can I take your order?
12:27I didn't laugh or insult her because there's really nothing wrong with being a waitress.
12:32We all have to start somewhere if we want to make it.
