00:00Hi, I'm Blake and this is my story.
00:02Don't forget to like and subscribe.
00:04My childhood was pretty weird.
00:06My mom could be a little dramatic.
00:09She was either very happy or very sad.
00:12She would do cartwheels on the lawn just because the sun was out
00:16and cry like a baby waving the trash goodbye on garbage day.
00:20On the first day of school, she strung balloons in my hair.
00:23Everyone made fun of me.
00:25This one boy, Sam, made a game out of who could pop the most of my balloons
00:29while they were still attached to my head.
00:32I went home crying.
00:33They're just jealous of you.
00:35You're the prettiest girl in your class.
00:37But I didn't like the way people looked at us and talked about my mom behind her back.
00:42I heard she serves candy for dinner.
00:44So irresponsible.
00:46That poor child.
00:48Stuck with a crazy mother like that.
00:50I didn't want anyone talking about us like that.
00:53So I started dressing myself for school and packing my own lunch.
00:57I was super serious about my studies and tried to be as invisible as possible.
01:01But Sam made it his mission to make my life miserable.
01:05Where'd you get that dress, loser?
01:07Because it's screaming for some color.
01:10What did you do to your face, dingbat?
01:12Because it looks good enough to punch.
01:14I didn't want to give kids like Sam more stuff to use against me.
01:17So I purposely didn't invite anyone to my 10th birthday.
01:21I have a surprise for you.
01:23Come out to the garden and see.
01:25My entire class was there.
01:27Mom dressed up as a clown and danced around.
01:30She even had one of those comically large flowers on her coat that squirted water on people.
01:35It was so humiliating.
01:37Everyone was laughing at her.
01:39It was so cringe that I ran to my room and refused to come out.
01:42Honey, what's wrong?
01:44Is your tummy hurting?
01:46Is it gas?
01:47Do you need to poop?
01:48Mom, please leave me alone.
01:51I guess it's the hormones.
01:53My little girl is growing up.
01:55Other than Sam always torturing me, life was going as well as it could.
01:59Years went by and I was acing my classes and even volunteering at the library when a transfer
02:05student from LA joined us in the middle of 11th grade.
02:08Kiera was something else.
02:10She had the most ridiculous hair and wore super bright colors in every shade.
02:15But somehow she thought I was the fascinating one.
02:18Why is your hair tight up so tight?
02:20Aren't you afraid you'll pull the skin right off your skull?
02:23Whoa, what's the prescription for your glasses?
02:26Are you, like, legally blind?
02:28No, I'm not blind.
02:30Yeah, she is.
02:31She uses echolocation like a bat.
02:33See?
02:34That's why she has massive ears.
02:36Get lost, Sam.
02:37Oddly, it was our combined hate for Sam that brought us together as friends.
02:41We got closer over spring break and Kiera told me about her parents, who both owned a tech company.
02:47They think I'm a weird hippie.
02:49We have nothing in common.
02:51I visited her house for dinner once.
02:52The place was so huge, I got lost twice looking for the bathroom.
02:57Despite what Kiera said, I thought her parents were awesome.
03:00They even had vegetables for dinner.
03:02What do you plan on doing after high school, Blake?
03:05I was hoping to study law at Harvard.
03:07That's amazing.
03:08If only Kiera had some ambition, too.
03:11Her only talent right now seems to be inhaling food.
03:15Ugh, Dad.
03:16Honestly, I felt like someone had switched me and Kiera at birth and we ended up in the wrong families.
03:22Apparently, Kiera thought that, too.
03:24I bet my parents wished they had you as a daughter and not dumb old me.
03:28See, that's the thing.
03:30I had succeeded in making everyone think I was this straight-A kid who didn't do anything ridiculous.
03:35But I had one dark secret.
03:37I was obsessed with mermaids and I secretly drew comics about a mermaid archaeologist who discovered shipwrecks.
03:44And I never wanted anyone to find out.
03:46I felt bad for Kiera, so I invited her over to my place because I knew she and Mom would get along really well.
03:52Kiera, you're like the daughter I never had.
03:55Um, hello?
03:57I don't get it.
03:58How could a cool mom like you have a boring daughter like Blake?
04:01It's a mystery.
04:03Marshmallow stuffed cookies and pixie dust sandwiches for dinner?
04:05I was cleaning the dishes after dinner when I heard a squeal from my room.
04:09And I found Kiera going through my drafts.
04:12OMG, these are so cute.
04:15Who made them?
04:16Why are you going through my private stuff?
04:18Why are you getting so mad?
04:20It's not like you made these.
04:22Wait.
04:23You made these?
04:24Stop shouting.
04:25The neighbors will hear you.
04:27They should.
04:28These are awesome.
04:29Why don't you have these published?
04:31Do you really think they're that good?
04:32I'd pay serious money to follow the adventures of Memphis the Mermaid.
04:36Mom's always on the lookout for unique content like this.
04:39You could save up for Harvard with that kind of money.
04:42I don't know, Kiera.
04:44Just think about it, okay?
04:45I tossed and turned all night thinking about it.
04:48I'd built up a spotless reputation over the years.
04:51And no one could call me a freak anymore.
04:53Was I willing to risk all of that now?
04:55But what if it paid for my dream education?
04:58And suddenly, I had a great idea.
05:01The next day, I met Kiera in the library.
05:03I'm in.
05:04But I have a condition.
05:05You have to give the draft to your mom and say you made it.
05:09Are you nuts?
05:11No, think about it.
05:12Your parents want you to succeed.
05:14And I need the money, but not the fame or publicity.
05:17This could be a win-win for both of us.
05:19Well, if you're sure.
05:21The plan was a huge success.
05:24Kiera's parents were over the moon at her hidden talent.
05:27And the comic books were an instant hit.
05:29Kiera was called on all the morning shows and did a country-wide tour promoting the book.
05:35Back in school, she was suddenly this huge celebrity.
05:38Can you sign my copy, Kiera?
05:40Do you like my Memphis hairstyle, Kiera?
05:43Suddenly, Kiera didn't have time for me.
05:45She was too busy with her fans and new friends.
05:48I tried telling myself I didn't care.
05:50But a part of me was hurt and a little jealous.
05:53But wasn't this what I wanted?
05:55No one to notice me?
05:56Smell-o-gram.
05:58Sam, you moron.
06:00I'm gonna end you.
06:01Like your friendship with Kiera?
06:03That must have been rough.
06:04I guess I'm your only friend now.
06:06You're not my friend.
06:07Your words hurt me, Blake.
06:09Haven't I always made you smile and brightened your day?
06:12You've made me think of several ways to end you.
06:15See?
06:16I provide motivation and creativity.
06:18Now, how about as a thank you, you get me a date with Kiera?
06:23Why was stupid Sam interested in Kiera?
06:25And why did I care?
06:27He was a pain in my butt.
06:28But he was also really good looking now.
06:31Why do you want to date her anyway?
06:33Why do you care?
06:34Are you jealous?
06:35As if?
06:36Well, I want to date her cause she's awesome.
06:39Have you read the comics?
06:40They're epic.
06:42I've heard several Hollywood producers are interested in the movie rights.
06:45I pushed Sam away and walked off.
06:47It was my idea to put Kiera's name on my work, but I still hated every minute that she got glory,
06:54when I knew I would have gotten shame for it.
06:56It just wasn't fair.
06:58A few weeks later, Kiera suddenly showed up at my house asking for new drafts.
07:03I need to publish teasers on my stories.
07:05Hi to you too, Kiera.
07:07I'm fine.
07:08How are you?
07:08I know.
07:10I'm sorry.
07:10I've been busy.
07:11You have no idea what a creative person's life is like.
07:14Sure.
07:15I have no idea.
07:17And I haven't had time to draw up anything new.
07:20Are you serious?
07:21You must have something.
07:22A sketch?
07:22An idea?
07:23Here's an idea.
07:24How about you do something yourself for once?
07:27What's gotten into you?
07:29You're the one who practically begged me to take the credit.
07:32And now you're acting like I stole the idea from you?
07:35You know what?
07:36You're right.
07:36It was a stupid idea.
07:38And I'm glad it stopped now.
07:39No.
07:40What will I tell my parents?
07:42It's the first time they've thought I'm good at something.
07:44I don't see how that's my problem.
07:46You can tell them the truth.
07:48That you have no talent.
07:49You're a horrible person, Blake.
07:51I wish we'd never met.
07:53I felt terrible for all the hurtful things I'd said.
07:56Just then, Mom came into my room wearing a hollowed out watermelon as a helmet.
08:01Is everything okay?
08:02I was already upset, but Mom's ridiculous hat made me ballistic.
08:08She was the reason people thought I was weird and that made me insecure about my art.
08:12How can you ask that with that thing on your head?
08:15Jeez, Mom, when will you act your age?
08:17I'm sick of being the adult around here.
08:20Why are you speaking to me like this?
08:22Because you're an embarrassment.
08:24I regretted my words instantly.
08:26Mom looked so deeply hurt that I wanted to hug her and apologize.
08:30But she immediately left.
08:32What had I done?
08:33Mom didn't kiss me goodbye the next day.
08:36And Kiera didn't show up at school.
08:37I skipped lunch and drew a quick outline for Kiera when a shadow loomed behind me.
08:42Is that Memphis the Mermaid?
08:44You're the original artist?
08:46Are you nuts?
08:47I was just copying Kiera's work.
08:49She's really talented.
08:51Nah, I don't believe you.
08:53No one's that good at copying stuff.
08:56Wait till I tell the whole school.
08:58What do you want, jerk?
08:59Just the truth, actually.
09:01Why won't you take credit for your own work, loser?
09:03It's because of you.
09:05And other people like you.
09:07My whole life, you haven't missed any chance to ridicule me.
09:10And I've worked so hard to seem normal.
09:13I was afraid everyone would think I'm a dork or a freak for writing those comics.
09:17So yeah, I asked Kiera to put her name on it.
09:21And now it's ruined everything.
09:23And I don't need you making things any harder for me.
09:26For the first time ever, Sam actually shut up and looked guilty.
09:30I… I'm really sorry, Blake.
09:33You always seemed tough and I never realized how much my jokes actually affected you.
09:37You're amazing.
09:39And you shouldn't have to hide who you really are because of me or anybody.
09:43He leaned in and gently kissed me on the cheek before running off.
09:47What just happened?
09:48And why was my heart racing?
09:51After school, I went to Kiera's house, but I was in for a shock.
09:55Kiera left for Japan this morning.
09:57I don't know what happened, but she was really upset and said something about
10:00not having any talent.
10:02She's gone to study anime drawing for a year.
10:04I was heartbroken to learn that my words had affected Kiera so much.
10:08My best friend was gone and she'd probably hate me for the rest of her life.
10:12When I got home, I was in store for an even bigger surprise.
10:16Mom was in a boring dress making a roast dinner with vegetables.
10:21Welcome home, Blake.
10:23I'm sorry for making your life tougher than it is.
10:25You're such a good, hard-working daughter and I'll try my best to be like other moms.
10:31No, I'm sorry.
10:33I shouldn't have said those things to you.
10:34I was so obsessed with being normal that I pushed away the two people I love the most.
10:40And you're awesome, just as you are.
10:42I told Mom everything that had happened with Kiera.
10:45People make mistakes, honey.
10:47Write to Kiera and explain everything.
10:49I'm sure she'll forgive you.
10:51Wanna have chocolate cake for dinner?
10:52That sounds perfect, Mom.
10:54That night, I wrote an apology email to Kiera, but I never heard back from her.
10:59I still visited her parents once a week and they'd tell me about her life in Japan,
11:03but I really missed having her around.
11:06Soon after, Sam asked me out and we started to date.
11:08He was still annoying, but he also knew how to make me laugh.
11:13A year flew by and I started working on a new comic about a unicorn girl with rainbow hair
11:18and the habit of wearing every color at once.
11:20I was nervous about handing it to Kiera's mom for publishing, but Sam encouraged me.
11:25And she loved it.
11:26She said it reminded her of Kiera.
11:28My life turned upside down after the comics became a success.
11:32I sent Kiera a signed copy with a note saying it was inspired by her, but I never got a reply.
11:38One day, I was drawing in my room when there was a knock on my door.
11:41It was Kiera.
11:43Kiera, I'm so sorry.
11:45I was such an awful witch to you.
11:47I'm sorry, too.
11:48I took credit for your talent without even thanking you.
11:51It was never going to last and I'm glad it ended when it did.
11:54But I'm sad that our friendship got caught up in the mix.
11:57I needed to get away to figure myself out.
12:00I've missed you so much.
12:02I know.
12:02And I guess I missed you, too.
12:05It was a novel about a prim librarian that looked a lot like me,
12:09cataloging in the mornings and hunting vampires by night.
12:13I guess I am very inspiring.
12:16Don't push your luck.
