00:00Do chameleons change color to their surrounding like in this video?
00:04Chameleons are well known for their remarkable ability to change color,
00:08but sadly the video is a fake and contrary to popular belief,
00:12they do not do this primarily to blend into their surroundings.
00:16Instead, their color change is influenced by a combination of environmental,
00:21physiological, and emotional factors. For instance, chameleons may darken their skin
00:27to absorb more heat when cold or lighten it to cool down.
00:31Emotional states such as stress, aggression, or a desire to attract a mate can also trigger
00:36specific color patterns. While this can sometimes result in colors that help with camouflage,
00:42it is not a deliberate effort to mimic the exact colors of their environment.
00:47The process is controlled by the expansion or contraction of special pigment cells
00:51called chromatophores in their skin. These cells reflect light in different ways
00:56depending on how they are manipulated. Thus, a chameleon's color change is a complex
01:02and dynamic process used more for communication and thermoregulation than for concealment.
