00:00fourth world championship grand prix of 1982 and the first in europe 60 laps of the 3.13 mile circuit
00:07and unlike last year the weather's good with clear blue skies and sunshine as ever with any motor
00:13race in italy there's a giant crowd drawn here paradoxically enough partly by the fact that
00:19instead of a full grid of 26 cars there are only 14 because the bitter political wrangling which
00:26has dominated grand prix racing this year in south africa brazil and at long beach has continued
00:32here so as a result of nelson pk and keke rosberg being disqualified from their first and second
00:38places in brazil the mainly british formula one constructors teams have almost all withdrawn from
00:45the race the politics continue but the race is on a world championship race at that because the san
00:52marino grand prix will definitely count for points and after the revisions following the brazil judgment
00:58alan prost with two wins from three races leads the championship with 18 points six ahead of nikki
01:05lauda who by the way may yet lose his long beach winning points due to another protest then it's
01:12keke rosberg and john watson tying for third ahead of carlos reuterman who's now retired and michaeli
01:19alboretto with equal points in fifth place and significantly of those six drivers only two are
01:26competing at imala today alan prost and michaeli alboretto and the front two rows of the grid are
01:33occupied by the four turbo cars which have caused all the contention renault and ferrari in pole position
01:41top left of your picture is running our new the french driver in the turbocharged renault in second
01:49position on the grid alan prost in third of four places the two turbocharged ferraris of gilles
01:55villeneuve and didier pironi then in an absolutely superb fifth position the blue and white tyrrel of michaeli
02:04alboretto and in sixth place just a little bit back from alboretto bruno giacamelli in the red and
02:12white alfa romeo v12 you can just see the front of the seventh place car on the grid and the bottom
02:20right-hand corner of your screen and it is andrea de cesare is the man who occupied pole position in the
02:27long beach grand prix and now they are off around the warm-up lap yes there they go four turbo cars
02:35on the first four places of the grid quite a lot faster uh than any of the normally aspirated
02:41forward engine cars i think uh our new is something like three and a half seconds quicker than the
02:46fast one so the turbo's here it's a real power circuit and a big advantage they've got a good long
02:51straight slow corners at the end of them to get their teeth in they've been doing about 180 when they come
02:55into this corner when they arrive in the braking area the row of course that's uh depleted the field
03:01down to about half its normal size is another tragic blow in a long line of political wranglings and
03:08possibly the most serious that we've had yet to try and explain it to you what has happened is that uh
03:15in the constant search for uh improvement of the cars and ways to get around rules and things like that
03:21the focus teams that's the formula construction association that's most of the small private
03:27british based teams uh with their engines normally aspirated engines that they've got they can get
03:32their cars lighter than the official weight limit and so what they what the rules have always stated is
03:39that you're allowed to top up coolants and lubricants after the race if you run low on water and
03:44oil and you're under the weight limit you can fill them up so the what they've done most of the cars
03:51who aren't here have been running large water tanks to cool the brakes which they boil the water off
03:56right at the beginning of the race but then that then takes another 20 30 pounds off the weight of the
04:01car they run it empty during the race and at the end of the race they top it up now under the rules this
04:06is perfectly legal it's hardly within the spirit of the regulations but then regulations aren't written to
04:12be observed uh in spirit but uh in fact now what happened is that the turbo teams that's ferrari
04:19ferrari mainly who have led the fight uh and renault who have never been able to design chasses as well
04:24as uh the british designers can't get their cars down to the weight limit so they put in a protest
04:30against this now the governing body then sat down and uh turned it down the first time and then
04:36uh ferrari appealed and uh what happened was after the uh appeal ferrari came along and said that
04:46we'll uh we won't race we'll pull out if it doesn't go our way and so they they bowed to that and uh
04:51all of a sudden tofoka pulled out instead well there we go there are the two turbocharged renos followed by
04:59the ferraris and the big question in this race at the moment is are the tires of the ferrari going to
05:06last for 60 laps when the red lights go on there will be between four and seven seconds watch dreni
05:13arnu in pole position top left and alan front see how their turbos get away there is very very warring
05:21car it looks as though it has a dead engine and that must be a repetition of the trouble that he had in
05:26practice and ricardo paletti had trouble getting away in his arcella
05:40and as they go up towards the tamburello it is sure enough the two renos in the lead and it's a
05:47beautiful start by alan prost the man who is leading then it through they go the two ferraris are getting
05:55up down round the reticelio the two ferraris right up behind the second renault and brian hinton has had
06:05trouble in the tyrol getting away from the line and one of the ferraris is now pulling up and up into
06:12second place and it's veal nerve and in fourth position it is didier pironi michele alberto is in
06:19fifth place and it is renee arnu the pole position man through the aqua minerale bends chased by gilles
06:27villeneuve in second position in third place with second ferrari didier pironi then there is alan
06:33prost in fifth position it is michele alberto they come up to the varianta alta now now they plunge downhill
06:42into the revatza section where there is almost literally a big hole in the circuit where it has
06:49been chewed up by the tires of the cars these cars develop some 500 and more break there's the mark you
06:56can see the white line watch for it on this next lapse there are the two ferraris second and third
07:01villeneuve is the leader there in second position behind renee arnu didier pironi alain prost they're
07:09coming through to complete one lap with 59 to go and look at the lead that arnu has
07:22gerry warwick did not complete one lap and already there in the pits is andrea de cesares
07:28the man who led long beach so well for so long having been in pole position so it looks as though
07:35de cesareth is in trouble it looks as though brown hinton is out of the race but there is still quite
07:42a close fight for the first five places who is in fourth position is it prost or is it alboretto
07:51look at the corner underneath the crane there go the two ferraris and it looks yes i think it was
07:56alboretto it looked like a blue car yes yes here comes alboretto coming through he's moved up and
08:03to fourth but uh cross seems to have disappeared so maybe he was in trouble and limping around i
08:09didn't see him behind it we haven't had a shot to hold yet i think cross has stopped somewhere we don't
08:13yet know what's happened to him or haven't seen what's happened
08:16cross has come into the pit we have there he is cross into the pits and his tires already that's
08:25very very interesting and the ferraris are going to be even tougher on the tires yes they were quite
08:30confident about their their tires before in fact cross uh and and arnu or certainly prost qualified
08:36on his race tires but it's not tires now i think you'll find tires they change as a matter of course
08:42it's a routine thing the pit stops you always go quicker on fresher tires
08:48we're at his last meal now didier pierroni then somehow and out of our vision has got
08:55up into second position lap 22 now rennie arnu leads didier pierroni
09:12they're very close this time pierroni's brighter but you see how the renault gets that little bit
09:18of power down that little bit earlier and just gets out of that corner but villeneuve is having a go
09:22and i think villeneuve is probably going to pass his teammate pierroni pierroni's finally spots him
09:27completely side by side and villeneuve will have the inside right as they come into the hairpin but
09:33and they hang on together and that was at a speed of some 180 miles an hour and villeneuve is through
09:42into second place again he has regained his second place on lap 26
09:48oh giacomelli giacomelli parts off the course for reasons unknown but he doesn't look as if he's
09:58had any sort of an accident looks like a complete car probably just a mechanical breakdown
10:03and villeneuve the charger is back in control because he is forcing the pace now without a doubt
10:12he's got past and pulled away from pierroni and he's really harrying arnu it's up here that he
10:17seems to be quicker than arnu let's see if he can have a go up here but arnu seems to be moving to
10:21left to protect the line into the next corner there he goes yes he did that's that has always been his
10:26spot where he's performed best so villeneuve takes the lead now let's him pierroni's having a little go as
10:31well there's bruno giacomelli we've seen a lot of giacomelli this year with his helmet off watching
10:42the rest of the racing and now they're throwing to lap 30 this is the half distance yes i think the
10:48reno no he maybe isn't quite close enough but perone is getting a bit of a toe and the reno he's right
10:54up there and uh we could see a three-way breaking match down at the end of the straight you see there
10:59goes arnu he is quicker on the straight and he's got fuel now and so has pierroni possibly
11:05well almost gracious me almost this line of breast and we had two changes there arnu through to the
11:12lead pierroni through to second this is great stuff great icing pierroni jolly nearly did both of them
11:17he was within a whisker but he's now lost second place again poor old pierroni every time he does
11:23anything positive it seems to just sort of go straight back at him anyway arnu now re-established in
11:28the lead he is definitely the hardest man to pass the reno seems to be quicker on the straight
11:32marginally than the ferrari but that small little margin is uh its effect is very big because he came
11:39from uh he overtook them from a distance behind from which the ferrari couldn't have threatened had
11:43they started started uh back to front in that position
11:542.4 seconds separates the leader arnu and the third place man pierroni who you don't need me to tell
12:02you because you can see for yourself has closed right up on the nerve and he's going to take it is
12:05he yes pierroni got his nose ahead but the nerve is on the inside line there are certainly no team orders
12:12because pierroni is now up into second position pierroni who has won one grand prix in his career
12:20as compared with gilles villeneuve who has won six but uh pierroni who joined ferrari last year from
12:29what was the lige team and is now the talbot team we're seeing now pierroni having taken gilles villeneuve
12:36and moving up into second place and that this gets out arnu is held back and he's got the two ferraris
12:43right behind him but they're having a go but it gives it lets pierroni get right behind the renault
12:49and we're going to have a three-way fight down at the other end of the street with a bit of luck
12:52once more sacprebleu non-de-dieu i can hear arnu saying metaphorically will you get out of my way
13:00it's salazar actually it's salazar yes because i tell you what villeneuve is perfectly placed as
13:04well he's got he's getting the toe oh there's pushing and shove he's put him on the grass
13:09and arnu blocking it all up zap zap zap they go past and as one the renault and the two ferraris
13:17paint the chilian look at those three up front arnu pierroni and billeneuve closer actually as three
13:34than they have been at almost any other part of the race except for one that classic point where we got
13:40two changes arnu down and pierroni up and the leaders now come true to complete the two-thirds
13:47lap distance race and this is arnu leads pierroni second villeneuve third and i think villeneuve
13:55might just be close enough to pick up the draft from pierroni and have a go at him as they come
13:59down to the half but yes he's uh reasonably well placed so we're going to get a change of second
14:04place here by the look of things and he's got and he's also got the right side of the track to attack
14:11the corner but uh pierroni's fighting back there's certainly no uh team tactics driving here they're
14:17both going at it hammer and tongs and i somehow i just fancy villeneuve to be a little bit more
14:22capable of finding a way around arnu than pierroni who was who was there for a few laps but never really
14:28made much of an impression except of course when the back marker was causing trouble
14:32replay now let's look at this villeneuve comes out of the slipstream of pierroni's car to the left
14:43as we see arnu come into sight villeneuve on the outside of the bend taking the longer way around but
14:49now he's on the inside of the left-hander pierroni has to give way well this is where the ferrari
14:55nevertheless seems to have the power and uh it's significant that both the renos and the ferrari's
15:01got a got absolutely massive braking systems with twin calipers on each disc front and rear whereas
15:10for instance the tyrell which is the leading three liter car puts far less stress on the brakes but
15:16it's got single caliper brakes for those of you who are technically inclined but never mind that for
15:21a moment because the battle for the lead continues on lap 44 and pierroni who had dropped back
15:28uh i guess james you were right and uh pierroni was uh taking just a short breather because the
15:34gap is far less than it was between the second and there's a puff of smoke a bit more a bit more than
15:40before i thought coming out of the renault there so we'll we'll keep that one monitored we'll have a
15:44look at that but it was it i didn't see as big a one before did you murray no i did not i've noticed it
15:50for some time but it was much more significant there and it is much more there he goes again
15:55watch the renault everybody very carefully watch the the back of the car and feel nervous going to
16:00go through and take the lead here i believe yes i think the ren is in trouble he seems to have slowed
16:04down he's not producing the power it's turbo's blown up now that's a very spectacular site but that is
16:12goodbye rennie arnu don't set the poor ferrari outside what a great shame what a terrific race
16:18arnu's driven but i'm afraid that is the end of that for him so we're going to have to see how well
16:23the two ferraris can fight each other and uh oh healthy little blaze there you think he's going
16:28exactly exactly sorry jess exactly the same thing happened in practice a turbo blue and an oil line
16:35caught fire and arnu was out of that car like a jack rabbit onto the imola administration is
16:42absolutely magnificent and it is manifested by what you're seeing now there are lots of stations
16:48around the circuit with doctors and fire marshals and poor rennie arnu must be both hyped up and
16:54bitterly disappointed and frustrated he has driven a superb race and will have made a mistake he just
17:07went wide lost traction and peroni knit through just a little mistake from little nerve and that's what
17:13it's cost him it's cost him the lead now let's see if he can fight back on lap 47 and it is peroni
17:20leading vial nerve by 0.768 seconds they're closing up to a tail ender in third position now upper place
17:28of course with arnu out has gone alboretto in third position in fourth place it is jean-pierre jarrier
17:36in fifth place it is salazar in sixth position it is uh vinkelhock and in uh then next up it's theo farby
17:46who is back in the running notwithstanding the fact that he's been in the pits for seven laps
17:51well we've got a back marker in the way which can always uh drive things up as we've seen so
17:55often in the past and uh vial nerve is right on terms and is perfectly placed to launch his attack
18:01but he i'm quite sure won't settle willingly for second and will do all he can to uh rectify the
18:08situation or that's how he'd view it anyway but uh the back marker in fact has not got in the way
18:12and i would back the ferrari to just go past him on the straight charrier jean-pierre charrier the
18:19frenchman in the italian car man with an enormous amount of experience now does move over and does
18:27let pironi through and does let feel nerve through and there is therefore no change for first and second
18:35and see how she'll feel nerve is pushing pironi yes you know he didn't get out of there quite as
18:41well as i think he hoped i think he was hoping to get really quick ferrari is coming in yeah
18:46vial nerve that's where he would put it just put a wheel off lost traction that's the lift off throttle
18:50and pironi knits straight through leads out into the long sweeping goes on for a long long time left
18:58hander the tamburella fifth gear they build up to nearly 190 miles an hour on this trip up to the
19:07reticelio yeah bill that's well faced now he's picking up the draft but he's going to be alongside
19:12which side's pironi going to keep pironi i think has made him go the way he shouldn't have done the
19:16long around vialner's inside oh absolutely side by side but vialner's got the line up the hill into
19:22the next corner and look at the ats right in the line of both of them and vialner takes his
19:28opportunity comes out to the left and it could be that pironi is going to be bought and they go
19:32through absolutely together and vialner leads again another change in the lead and it's on lap 49 and
19:38the french canadian has put one across pironi and i think we have to put some of the blame there onto
19:45the ats because uh he certainly didn't make it at all easy for either of two of the two ferrari drivers
19:52but how brilliantly gil villeneuve took his opportunity on lap 49 and uh alberto is there
19:58he is is now 45 seconds behind the fight for the lead i remind you that earlier on in this race i
20:05said that man alberto could not only do well but could conceivably even win it and i don't retract a
20:11word of that because the way the two ferraris are going now which indicates a 10 tenth effort from the
20:18drivers and a 10 tenth strain on the machinery we could still and look at that pironi and vialner
20:25absolutely together they really believe pironi's just just nipped through we we the unfortunately
20:31director was away but vialner is going to respond here possibly so i would suspect that what happened
20:38that was on the straight i would suspect that vialner made a bit of a mistake coming out of the complex
20:42before the pits came out a bit slowly and uh pironi had the chance to pick it up so we've definitely
20:47got to fight because i don't think vialner's the sort of man to take much notice that slow signals from
20:51the pit and i would think that he'll desperately want to fight back he'll be mindful of championship
20:56points and all the other uh implications and at the end of this lap lap 57 there are going to be but
21:07three laps to go 58 59 60 and the crowd which came here hoping to see this but i think even the most
21:21optimistic italian could surely not have expected his beloved ferraris to be in first and second
21:28positions given that they were up against the two enormously successful turbocharged renaux which were
21:36ahead of both the ferraris on the start grid and those cars of course were the world championship
21:42leader alan prost and rennie arnu who led for so long well they've seen it and now we go into lap 58
21:50well vialner's pretty well placed uh you may be able to pick up the draft from there
21:59you see the closer you are to the car in front of course the better toe you get but vialner's
22:04pulled pulled right up now he's going to sweep down the outside they're going to arrive together
22:08and percamper only push him oh i said he was i feel the owner wasn't so far off giving him one up the
22:15back then that ferroni is defending that position with all he's got there's going to be i imagine a
22:23quite tense interview between the ferrari management and mr ferroni at the end of this race when uh he
22:30blandly said uh i didn't see any signal i just kept going as best i could and how very very good it is
22:38because ferroni now who had vialner right up his exhaust pipe just a few yards ago has now got that
22:47car length ahead of vialner which can make all the difference this lap 58
22:53down to the river again the double left-hander when they've gone underneath the bridge over the
23:01rough patch again vialner still right with pironi and he's undoubtedly going to challenge i suspect
23:06as they come up to the traguardo which is where they've done it again right at the end before right
23:11at the end of the lap yes field that's really battling away now just over two laps to go
23:29into lap 59 is it can yeah he's well placed now he's right right behind him and he's going to get
23:35by on the straight but can peroni defend his situation down to the corner they're going to arrive together
23:41with vialner with just the advantage he's going to be a little bit in front
23:46and he's done it exactly as he did it before he was on the outside on the right-hander on the left
23:52on the left side on the left-hander that gave vialner the advantage which he has taken and now he's
23:58keeping his foot stuffed right in the carpet and rather the fuel injection and uh now he's got to keep
24:06ahead of pironi not just for this lap but the next lap as well and my guess is that he will do just
24:13that because pironi has been second most of the time yeah what pironi's going to have to do is to be
24:19very well placed as they come onto the long straight in that combination uh corners those combination
24:24corners before the pit he's fighting well he's well placed now he's just got to hold that position not
24:28get any further behind field there but he's dropped back a bit he's got to he's got to start within
24:35sort of four lengths of vialner when they come onto the uh the main straight past the pit if he can do
24:41that he'll get him on the straight and he's certainly going to be within four lengths this is the last
24:47part of the last lap but one yeah the problem is of course being the car behind he's further than that
24:52behind that now and of course he doesn't get quite the same amount of grip can he close right up
24:57can he get himself in position he's not badly paced if he can just get the power down nicely
25:01oh he's all right he's got a chance but he didn't get the power on quite as he would have liked
25:05it and he's not quite close enough to sling right past vialner but he's this is that 60 the last lap
25:14we we are around the tamburello and cv of pironi now he's going through he's got to come down
25:21inside he's got it he's going wide oh fantastic stuff they've changed places on two laps running
25:27and pironi now all he has to do now is keep it pointing the right way and no mistakes because
25:32there really isn't a passing place and nesfield can have a go up up here there aren't really any
25:36more passing places on the lap so it looks as if pironi's done it the last of the late breakers pironi
25:43has shown himself to be with that masterly maneuver on the last lap in this san marino grand prix they're
25:50through the aqua minerale bends for the last time the crowd is really cheering them home ferrari
25:57looks as though it's going to win ferrari looks as though it's going to be second look at the flags
26:01waving it's a long long time since ferrari had the double first and second and it looks as though
26:09gilles villeneuve as they come down underneath the bridge down to the rivata for the last time he's
26:15going to have to give best to his teammate didier pironi and that it's going to be a win for the
26:20belgians for the frenchman for the second time in his career but uh villeneuve could still do it
26:26he's going to try and go through on the inside these are the closing stages they've into the
26:29traguardo now and no i don't think villeneuve can possibly do it i tell you pironi nearly blew it he
26:36made a mistake there terribly on that corner before the combination and villeneuve was nearly passed but
26:41there we go didier pironi wins magnificent race terrific entertainment but what a shame we haven't
26:46got a full field indeed yes but in spite of that and thank heavens and see all the way around now
26:54it's going to be a very very happy italian crowd that goes home and rightly so pironi wins in the
27:01ferrari there is the second place man villeneuve in the ferrari and already pironi i've never seen
27:08anybody do that as quickly as that pironi is either very hot or he wants the crowd justifiably and
27:13understandably to see his face but his helmet is off to take the plaudits of the crowd on the wind down
27:20lap and let us establish that it is an italian two in third position as distinctive and as meritorious a
27:29drive by michele alboretto finishing third in the tyrol as villeneuve in second place and pironi here the
27:37winner so a win for pironi second for villeneuve third for alboretto four for jean-pierre jerry a fifth
27:49for eliseo salazar and six for vinkelhock in the ats here are the championship points alan
27:58cross bill leads with 18 points from nikki lauda is not here today with 12 points alboretto moves up into the
28:06the first
