00:00:00The North Sea gently rolls in to meet the Dutch coast, leaving sand dunes and
00:00:05creating beautiful beaches, a perfect setting for the oceanside resort called
00:00:10Zandvoort. Located 20 miles west of the Dutch capital Amsterdam, this charming
00:00:16small town has always been a posh suburb, a relaxing haven where city dwellers can
00:00:22find a tranquil atmosphere. But it is the mechanical world of Formula One which
00:00:28operates at Zandvoort Racing Circuit that has made the name famous worldwide.
00:00:34The Grand Prix is seen as a dramatic contrast to Zandvoort city center, full
00:00:40of unique Dutch architecture, small quaint restaurants, quiet friendly people
00:00:45with a gentle approach to their seaside lifestyle. The beaches are filled all
00:00:50summer long and many people travel the town and low-lying countryside on
00:00:55bicycles. But for three days a year all of this is awakened by the thunder of
00:01:01Zandvoort and Holland is transformed into the performance capital of the
00:01:06world. The circuit is one of the most challenging and loved Grand Prix tracks
00:01:10in international motor racing. Termed flat-out for the brave, a driver's circuit,
00:01:16too fast, on the limit, a thunder track where lightning strikes in the same
00:01:21place more than once every year. Certain Grand Prix layouts have their
00:01:26thunderspots. Monza has Curva Patabolica, Brands Hatch has Paddock Bend, and
00:01:33Zandvoort has the appropriately named Tarzan Corner. It is located at the end
00:01:39of the long pit straight where the turbo-powered cars touch 200 miles an
00:01:44hour. Many a brave battle has been won and lost during the 2.5 seconds of super
00:01:50hard braking from maximum speed into the 60 mile an hour on the limit curve.
00:01:56Recently the corner has produced three spectacular accidents such as Rene Arnoux
00:02:02hitting the Tarzan tire wall head-on at more than 150 miles an hour, emerging
00:02:08uninjured from his totally shattered Renault. The Dutch act as an excellent
00:02:14international host for thousands of Grand Prix fans from Belgium, Germany,
00:02:18England, and beyond. Over 100,000 of them stormed to share the thunder, witnessed
00:02:24the track, cars, drivers, and teams to be a part of the event during the Grand
00:02:29Prix of Holland. This is John Bozzignano. I'll be your host along with Brian
00:02:35Kreisky for this 90-minute ESPN coverage of the Dutch Grand Prix for Formula One
00:02:40racing cars. Brian and I will be presenting technical reports, driver
00:02:45interviews, all the latest F1 updates, plus the fantastic Grand Prix race action.
00:02:50Brian, what specials do you have for us this weekend? Well, as you know, we spoke to
00:02:56Bernie Ecclestone, the president of the Fokker at the Austrian Grand Prix and that
00:02:59was a bit of a controversial interview to say the least. Well, here in Holland
00:03:03we're talking to Jean-Marie Balestre, who is the president of the FISA. Now, the FISA
00:03:07is a governing body for worldwide motor racing and there is a problem between
00:03:12the FISA and ACUS. You've got Bernadette Martin, the president of the ACUS. Now,
00:03:16ACUS is the American sanctioning body for the majority of races that take
00:03:20place in America and FISA have said that there's a possibility they may withdraw
00:03:24their consent from the ACUS. So, we're talking to both Balestre and Martin here
00:03:30in Zandvoort. I think that should prove quite interesting. So, please stay tuned
00:03:34after this short break when we also answer the question, what is the fastest
00:03:39thing a Formula One car can do? Think about it. We'll be right back.
00:03:50The fastest thing a Formula One car can do? Stop. A Grand Prix racer can de-accelerate
00:03:56a brake much faster than it can accelerate. Brakes are like the line of a
00:04:02football team. They do a lot of work but get very little glory. When you think of
00:04:07these 1,200 pound vehicles made of space-age super light materials, cast
00:04:12iron does not often come to mind but there is one area where this ancient
00:04:16heavy metal still works best. The four disc brakes at each corner of the car
00:04:22and do they work? Pulling over 2.3 G's, a driver can de-accelerate from 180 miles
00:04:29an hour to 50 in just over 260 feet. This is a loss of 130 miles an hour in
00:04:36about 2.6 seconds, a fraction of the time and distance that it would take to
00:04:42gain that much speed. The biggest problem at this level of friction is heat. If it
00:04:49was dark while watching a car perform such movers, you could see a streak of
00:04:53orange glow lighting up the entire wheel as the disc turned red-hot. On track
00:04:59operating temperatures reach 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit and a full set of
00:05:05extra hard pads disappear in only 200 miles. Your road car pads should last
00:05:1120 to 30,000 so the air cooling system becomes a top priority. The other
00:05:18difficulty is having all the pads grip the disc at the same time. If two
00:05:23calipers are used per disc, you have 16 pads that must work together. One major
00:05:29premature or late grab could send the car wildly out of control. The
00:05:34perfection of disc brakes in racing has led to the system being widely used by
00:05:39the car manufacturers. Let's look at the racing setup. Now when the driver pushes
00:05:46on the brake pedal, it activates these master cylinders where brake fluid is
00:05:51pumped through the steel lines out into the caliper. The caliper is what actually
00:05:56houses the brake pads and these pads push on the disc causing the
00:06:02deceleration or braking. That's where the friction comes in. Tremendous heat
00:06:07building up on this brake disc. The only way to cool it is by air. As you can see
00:06:14it's hollow, ventilated. The design inside pumps air on the inside and out trying
00:06:22to cool it as best as possible before the next corner. You get a little extra
00:06:27boost of air from this brake duct. At high speed, a ram air effect going through
00:06:34here and channeled down into the center of the ventilated disc. More air you can
00:06:40get through that disc, the faster they're going to cool. A set of discs like this
00:06:45cost about $450 and they're only good for one race.
00:06:51Simon Arklis of AP Racing. Why do you go up and down the pit row putting
00:06:57psychedelic colors on all the discs? Well this is to ensure that the
00:07:02brake pads and the discs are all working at their optimum temperature. This
00:07:06enables us to keep a check on the temperatures and adjust the cooling to
00:07:10suit. It varies from circuit to circuit and from driver to driver so we have to
00:07:16keep a pretty accurate check to make sure they're working at their best. So
00:07:19each color goes off or burns at a different temperature? It vaporizes and
00:07:24burns off at a different temperature so that we can control exactly the
00:07:29temperature the discs are working at. It must be a nice thing to know. Sure, that's right.
00:07:34Even the most proven systems are under constant development in Formula One
00:07:38racing. For the latest state-of-the-art in making Formula One cars stop, we talked
00:07:44to Team McLaren's Steve Nichols, the only American engineer currently in Formula
00:07:50One. McLaren International has the most experience with the second generation of
00:07:55discs. Steve, could you tell us a little bit about your system? Well our system
00:08:00uses discs that are made out of carbon and instead of cast iron. It's a new
00:08:05material that's been developed in recent years and the main advantage of it is
00:08:10that it's much lighter in weight than the normal cast iron sort of discs
00:08:16that most of the cars use. What about their ability to actually stop the car?
00:08:20Is that better? Yes, they actually stop the car quicker because they have a
00:08:24higher coefficient of friction so they get better bite initially. They're less
00:08:29susceptible to temperature related problems because they actually work
00:08:34better and better the hotter they get. These work brakes work operating
00:08:40temperature out on the track is maybe 700 degrees centigrade where a cast iron
00:08:44brake operates maybe 450 to 550 degrees centigrade. The mechanical failure a
00:08:51driver fears the most is loss of his brakes. Also one of the greatest
00:08:56advantages to competitive driving is to master the fine art of late braking.
00:09:01We're going to talk to Nigel Mansell of John Player Team Lotus about these two
00:09:06points. Nigel, how do you go about actually judging the point of braking on
00:09:10a circuit like this? Well there's two ways of doing it. I always do it by
00:09:15eyesight watching the corner and just sort of judging the speed and the entry
00:09:19and there's another way of sort of having markers on the side of the
00:09:22circuit which is sometimes good except when you come back the next day they're
00:09:25moved or they've disappeared or whatever so I always sort of use my own
00:09:30eyesight to judge. Now the majority of passing is done under braking also
00:09:35what's that like to be pushing someone into a corner trying to get by? Well it
00:09:39depends who they are it can be pretty hairy or you can you know have a very
00:09:43good maneuver and it can be very satisfying when you get past but there
00:09:46are a few drivers that you've got to get right alongside to get past them because
00:09:50otherwise they'll move across on you and obviously one can have an accident if
00:09:54that happens. It's very spectacular when you see the great puff of tire smoke and
00:09:59coming up from the wheels but that's really not the greatest way to slow down
00:10:03is it? No as soon as you've locked the wheels and it's negative braking in fact
00:10:08you're starting to slide and not only that you're hurting the tires it's the
00:10:12detriment to the tires so much so that you can flat spot what is known as flat
00:10:16spotting the tire and if you do that badly enough it means you've got to come
00:10:20and make a pit stop and change all four. Well have you ever had an accident
00:10:24because of a brake failure they don't have many mechanical failures but once
00:10:27in a while it's pretty spectacular. I went through a bad time three years ago
00:10:31in Formula One where I had more than my fair share but I've had touch wood I've
00:10:37had very very good mechanics and the JPS the jump player Lotus team have been
00:10:42very good from the point of view of a mechanical failures but three years ago
00:10:47in fact to this race I had a brake failure in one of the chicanes out the
00:10:51back and it was the Union just broke off the side of the caliper and there was
00:10:55just no brakes at all going into one of the turns and needless to say I went
00:11:00into the wall quite heavily but but walked away from it it wasn't very
00:11:03comfortable I can assure you. What does that do to your confidence every time
00:11:07you put your foot on that pedal and push down you expect it to work does
00:11:11something like that make you think about it working more often or? Well you change
00:11:15your underpants and then you get in the car again but seriously I think it
00:11:21probably takes a couple of laps of you know reassuring yourself the brakes are
00:11:24going to be there because now on some of the turns you're going into them at 200
00:11:28miles an hour and it's essential you have your brakes but it's not something
00:11:31that fortunately happens every day you've got to be unlucky if they do fail
00:11:34and you just build yourself up and if you're a professional racing driver like
00:11:39most of us are then there's no problem you go about your business and do your
00:11:43job. Well Nigel we hope that you stop quickly and safely every time at this
00:11:47Zandvoort circuit. Yeah I hope so too. One of the greatest late breakers of all
00:11:53times Mario Andretti summed it all up when he said break a half a second too
00:11:58soon and two cars will pass you a half a second too late and you're going to
00:12:02hit the wall. We'll be right back with more ESPN Auto Racing 83 after another
00:12:09very important short break.
00:12:14Currently lies second in the World Championship Brazilian Nelson Piquet in
00:12:18pole position for the 12th round of the World Championship Series here at
00:12:22Zandvoort the Dutch Grand Prix. He went round in a 1 minute 15.630
00:12:26second lap an average speed of 126 miles an hour in his Parmalat Brabham.
00:12:31After practice we tried to interview Nelson Piquet. Nelson Piquet with a
00:12:37Parmalat Brabham pole position here in the Dutch Grand Prix half a second lap
00:12:41quicker than Patrick Tambay who really is your rival for the championship along
00:12:45with Arnoux and Prost. Obviously went very well.
00:12:51Now there's no truth in the rumor that they're going to give Nelson a show all
00:12:57of his own on the ESPN network. So let's try it one more time.
00:13:04Why so quick? Well we had two very bad days. The car was very bad and we
00:13:10tried very hard but we could not fix the car and Gordon found out that maybe the
00:13:15rear dampers could be the problem. We took the dampers for the
00:13:20KONI truck here. KONI is the Dutch people here that make the KONI shock absorber.
00:13:27And they find out the shock absorber was a problem and they changed the damping.
00:13:33And the car changed like this. The car was perfect in the corners and today is a
00:13:40fresh day. It's very good for my engine and I will do it in time. Nelson tomorrow's race
00:13:44at the Dutch Grand Prix. Is that important to you for the world
00:13:47championship? How much does a world championship mean a second world
00:13:50championship to you? How important is it to you? Is it the individual races that
00:13:54are so important? Of course. I think the first time I won the world
00:14:00championship was I think was more important in my opinion. It was not very
00:14:05important for me. It was more important for the people who work with me and for the
00:14:09chance they gave to me to be in a good team and win for a good team. But I
00:14:14think the second time I would like to win very much for me. And the race
00:14:19tomorrow between you, Prostanu and of course Tambay, the four drivers who can
00:14:23really win the world championship. Is this for you really just about the most
00:14:26important race of the season isn't it? Because you've got your 14 points behind
00:14:29and you've really got to win tomorrow haven't you? It's not really true because
00:14:34more races you never know. I have a lot of little bad luck this year.
00:14:40I lost a lot of points for little stupid things and I think it can happen to anyone.
00:14:46Maybe the luck can change and I can have a very good race tomorrow and
00:14:50Prost maybe doesn't finish. We never know. Maybe he can win tomorrow and
00:14:54don't finish and he'll be much closer to the championship. More races I cannot say
00:14:59it's a lottery but between our four we will fight in the front. I think it's a
00:15:04little bit lottery. Do you turn the booth very far out for a
00:15:09qualifying lap like you've done? Half a second a lap quicker than the man in
00:15:12second place on the grid, Praktik Tambay? I think the state is at the end of the year
00:15:17everybody turns the booth more than they can. Maximum they can. It's a fight
00:15:23between tyres and the engine companies and the chassis of course but we have
00:15:30to do what they want. We put the booth as high as we can and
00:15:36softer tyres as we can and we risk more than we can. Do you take more risks on
00:15:42that one lap where you did a lap like that? For sure. Sometimes you get in
00:15:48the corner you don't know if you'll come out. Do you agree with things like
00:15:51qualifying tyres? Do you agree the way the qualifying is run? Well I think the only
00:15:56bad thing about qualifying tyres is a lot of drives they don't respect another
00:16:01one and the one we can a quick lap and some of the drives see you in a quick
00:16:05lap they try to to be in front of you but in another way I think it's good
00:16:10because more races is a dangerous sport and that's the reason
00:16:16everybody come to see because it's a very exciting thing you know and I think
00:16:21is that the reason I do more races because I like to take risks. Second
00:16:26quickest in practice here at Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix Patrick Tambay
00:16:30with the Ferrari his best time of one minute 16.370 second lap
00:16:35seven-tenths of a second slower than that incredible time set by Nelson Piquet
00:16:41Patrick hasn't finished the last two Grand Prix's and must do well here at
00:16:44Zandvoort. What do you think of Piquet's time? It was a very interesting qualifying
00:16:50and a very good performance from Nelson Piquet. Actually a time that was
00:16:54difficult for us to match today but it's a different story for the
00:17:00race tomorrow. I think it's an important race for me it's going to be an important
00:17:04race for Nelson as well and for Arnaud. Unfortunately he's in a worse position
00:17:08than both of us. I think it's going to be difficult to cross because there's a lot
00:17:12of pressure on him from both of us. We're going to go all the way possible to the
00:17:17finish in front of him, gain as many points as possible and we're going to
00:17:22make things difficult for him. What about you and Arnaud? Now you're both fighting
00:17:26for the World Championship as well. What sort of team orders? I'm taking you a
00:17:29little bit annoyed about the last race when he slipped inside you. Are there
00:17:33specific team orders in the Ferraris? Who should win, who should be careful,
00:17:37whatever? We both have the same kind of equipment and this is probably one of
00:17:41the team that is very keen on doing such a thing on equal terms and that's very
00:17:47it's a boost for the driver you know that he's going to be served 100%. As far
00:17:52as the team orders on the track are concerned, no we got to give our best and
00:17:56do our best as possible. You could run into some kind of problems eventually if
00:18:00you both run for the same position but that's racing. So here at Zandvoort is it
00:18:07sort of all out right from the word go? No team orders, no holds barred because
00:18:11this is the the most important race for you of the year isn't it really? The
00:18:14World Championship. Well all the races have been very important. We were not
00:18:18going to have any team orders here obviously as far as the situation is
00:18:23because we are very close in points and I'm on the front row second and I think
00:18:28he's got some kind of problems in qualifying, he's tenth. So before he gets up...
00:18:33Does that make you pleased? Well before he gets up to me it's going to take a few
00:18:38laps I hope. Patrick Talbot, thank you very much.
00:18:41Qualifying third on the grid here in Zandvoort, Elio De Angelis with the
00:18:46John Player Special Lotus. A time of one minute sixteen point four one one
00:18:51seconds. De Angelis was quickest after the first day's practice but it's
00:18:55interesting to note that in pole position Piquet is on Michelin's,
00:18:58Tambay is on Goodyear's and Elio De Angelis is on Pirelli's. Elio De Angelis,
00:19:03team Lotus, fastest in the first qualifying session today. You think
00:19:08you'll be able to hold on to that position tomorrow? I really hope so
00:19:11because I think that I have another good chance tomorrow because I didn't qualify
00:19:17with my race car, I just qualified with the T-car and on the race car there is a
00:19:22better engine and better setting so I should be able to repeat the time and to
00:19:26improve it a little bit. The T-car must be going very well though. Yes it's not
00:19:31exactly what we call a T-car, it's something that is very close to the
00:19:34race car, yes. Now I noticed on the braking down here at the end of the
00:19:39straight no one was going deeper than you. Are the brakes really that good on
00:19:44the Lotus? Well I have to say thanks on the brakes and I have to say thanks on
00:19:49the tyres as well because I think we have one of the best rubber for qualifying
00:19:55so you know with the softer rubber you can brake a little bit later but
00:19:59certainly the setting together with the rubber and the brakes, as you call it, I
00:20:03think makes a mixture that did make a good solution. Which is more
00:20:10difficult, to be on pole and leading or to be able to follow and have a race
00:20:15strategy where you have to catch somebody? Is it harder to lead or to
00:20:18follow? Well in my racing career I always catch somebody. Now I
00:20:24would like to do some of these boring race when you get the lead and
00:20:29you leave everybody behind you 30-40 seconds. I hope so. Thank you. Well there
00:20:35might be three different tyre companies in the top three places on the grid that
00:20:39we've got four different manufacturers within the top four placings because
00:20:44fourth quickest is the current World Championship leader Frenchman Alain
00:20:47Prost with the Renault Elf turbo. He did a one minute 16.6 11 second lap.
00:20:54Prost has already won four Grand Prix so far this season more than anybody else
00:20:59has a comfortable lead in the championship. He has 14 points lead but that
00:21:03could evaporate in these last four rounds of the World Grand Prix series. In
00:21:08fact the cars third, fourth and fifth on the grid are all powered by the Renault
00:21:12turbo engine because in fifth place on the grid we have Nigel Mansell with a
00:21:16second John Player Lotus. He went round in a one minute 16.7 11 second lap.
00:21:21So the Pirelli qualifying tyres going very well here at Zandvoort. Third and fifth
00:21:26place on the grid for the two Lotus cars but their race tyre hasn't really proved
00:21:31that competitive. How did Nigel think his tyres would stand up in the race? Well
00:21:36that's a six million dollar question here because as we look up at the sky I
00:21:39don't really know what the day is going to do at the moment. It's obviously slick
00:21:44tyres but the ground is very damp so I think any tyre would last at the moment.
00:21:48If it is dry this afternoon and I don't mind whether it's dry or wet but I
00:21:54prefer one or the other. I don't like the in-between because then you've got to
00:21:57sort of virtually guess what you're going to sort of start on like Monaco was
00:22:01this year. I hope that they will go the distance obviously because I'm running
00:22:06on them but after Austria I have my doubts but things nevertheless are
00:22:11looking very good from the from the point of view of the car and the team.
00:22:14Nigel from our American viewers point of view where should we put a camera? Would
00:22:20it be ideal a nice low camera position going into Tarzan on the first lap? That
00:22:24seems to be the most hairy spot. Is that right? Well I can assure you that there's
00:22:28a few guys at the front for the for the start of the race again try very hard to
00:22:34get into the lead on the first corner and even with me being on fifth spot if
00:22:38I can get a good getaway good take away off the start you know I think I could
00:22:42stand a good chance. Six on the grid of 26 cars for the Dutch Grand Prix is
00:22:47Riccardo Petrezzi with the second Parmalat Brabham. Riccardo went round in
00:22:52a 1 minute 16.940 second lap and all of these top times very close together
00:22:57indeed and so it bodes well for the race we had a tremendously exciting race in
00:23:02Austria there's Riccardo and we look forward to an equally exciting one here
00:23:06in the 12th round of the championship. Lots of interest here then in practice
00:23:10and qualifying in seventh place on the grid the British driver Derek Rorick
00:23:14with a Candy Toleman. He went round in a 1 minute 17.198 second lap. The Toleman is
00:23:20powered by the British-built Hart turbo four-cylinder engine yet to score world
00:23:25championship points. Here at Zandvoort they fitted a brand new type of turbo
00:23:29charger in the interest of reliability and hope to do well. Qualifying in eighth
00:23:34place is the Alfa Turbo of Andrea de Cesaris. He's a somewhat volatile Italian
00:23:40driver but an extremely good driver nevertheless. He's in the Alfa Romeo
00:23:45qualifying a 1 minute 17.233 second lap. Here he is coming into the pits to be
00:23:52weighed during one of the two official timed sessions. The cars are going on the
00:23:57little four weighing posts to check that the car is totally legal to the FIA
00:24:02standard. But towards the end of practice Andrea had a little bit of a coming
00:24:07together with the Palmolat Brabham of Riccardo Petrezzi and Andrea in true
00:24:12Italian style goes up to Riccardo to bid him good afternoon.
00:24:18Or perhaps something else in Italian that we can't understand. Petrezzi not
00:24:24particularly bothered by the assault on his helmet gets out and rather casually
00:24:30takes his helmet off. Whilst just down the pit lane Johnny Cicotta the
00:24:33Venezuelan driver is also having an argument with the ATS driver Manfred
00:24:38Winkelhock. Well perhaps a bit of a red face for Riccardo but no harm done.
00:24:44Ninth quickest is the ATS of Winkelhock and unusually far back in tenth place on
00:24:48the grid the man who lies third in the world championship. Won in Germany
00:24:52finished second in the last race in Austria the Ferrari driver René Arnoux
00:24:56qualifying on a one minute seventeen point three nine seven second lap after
00:25:02a lot of problems during practice. And now at this stage of the season it's
00:25:06interesting to note that there are no particular team orders at Ferrari and with Arnoux just
00:25:12ahead of his teammate to the world championship things should be very
00:25:15interesting for these final four races and what I think is going to be one of
00:25:19the most exciting world championship series for many many years. Number 28
00:25:25René Arnoux then qualifying 10th on the grid. 11th also some way back Eddie
00:25:30Chivo with the second Renault Elf. He qualified in a one minute 17.676
00:25:35lap. He again had problems during practice but feels that his car is well
00:25:40set up for the race. 12th place Mauro Baldi with the Alfa Turbo. 13th Bruno
00:25:45Giacomelli with the Candy Tullman. And in 14th place the quickest normally aspirated
00:25:50car fastest non-turbo the Swiss driver Marc Surer with the Arrows. He qualified
00:25:55four seconds slower than the pole position man Nelson Piquet on a one minute 19.696
00:26:01second lap. In 15th place is John Watson with the McLaren that's powered by the
00:26:06normal Ford Cosworth. Whilst qualifying in 19th place on the grid is his
00:26:11teammate Niki Lauda the great Austrian driver with the McLaren but this car
00:26:15powered by the brand-new tag Porsche turbo engine and the race here in
00:26:20Zandvoort is his debut race. It has been tested over the last six weeks but this
00:26:25is its first ever race appearance. There is the eight-cylinder tag turbo which is
00:26:31made by the Porsche engineers in Weisbach in West Germany but it should
00:26:36be noted that this is not an official Porsche turbo engine for Formula One
00:26:40cars. The Technik Avantgarde concern or tag for short are customers of the
00:26:46Porsche car company but we're sure that this engine will be very competitive
00:26:49within a short space of time. Just getting onto the grid in 26th place is
00:26:53the American driver Danny Sullivan with the Benetton Tyrrell. He went round in a
00:26:57one minute 20.842 second lap and we asked Danny if he was going to get turbo
00:27:03power for the 1984 season. Yes we'll have a turbo engine and I don't know which
00:27:08one so don't ask because Ken's keeping that a secret but I think every team
00:27:12next year will have to have a turbo power. I think the Ford Cosworth for next
00:27:16season is finished.
00:27:23Back to ESPN Auto Racing's coverage of the 1983 Dutch Grand Prix here at Zandvoort
00:27:30and this is the time in the program where we put our major interview item in
00:27:34to you. Now we have two people here who are very important to motorsport, Formula
00:27:39One in particular. I have on my left here this gentleman Jean-Marie Ballest who is
00:27:43the president of the FISA. As you probably realize the FISA is the
00:27:46governing body of all motorsport all over the world. Next to him we have
00:27:51Baudette Martin who is the president of the ACUS which of course is a
00:27:56sanctioning body for the United States. My first question is going to be to Mr.
00:28:00Ballest. Jean-Marie I understand that the FISA has stated that there is a
00:28:05possibility that they could take the authority away from the ACUS in
00:28:09America. Is this correct and is this still your intention? Yes because it's
00:28:15necessary to have the promotion for all the World Championship. World
00:28:21Championship for Formula One, World Championship for endurance and also for
00:28:26rallies. And now we have all the countries in the world that are members of FISA. Our 19
00:28:33countries and the next month come also the Chinese Republic and we think that
00:28:40the people they receive the sporting power they must ensure the motorsport
00:28:45and we were very sorry. We had not the same result in the United States and
00:28:52was a conflict and we tried to have insurance and warranty that the American
00:28:59club try to help the world organization for a good result in the United States area.
00:29:10Well Baudette you've heard the president's reply to our question. First of all we
00:29:15have explained what the ACUS is but can you tell us in your own words or to the
00:29:19American audience there define what ACUS does in the United States. Yes the ACUS
00:29:25is the automobile competition committee for the United States and as such it is
00:29:31the sporting arm of the FISA and the FIA in the United States. We sanction all the
00:29:37international racing by delegating it through our member clubs. What is your
00:29:44role let's say which you prefer Formula One or kart racing? What's your more
00:29:48favorite idea? Well of course Formula One is the International Grand Prix
00:29:53Championship. Kart is a domestic program with a long tradition but it's not part
00:29:59of the international motorsport community really and we certainly are
00:30:05completely behind Formula One Grand Prix racing. Have you come to an agreement
00:30:11with the FISA now? Do you feel that everything is in order now? Oh yes I
00:30:17think we've done some reorganization. We feel that we're in a much better way
00:30:23to support the FISA programs as well as all of our American international
00:30:29racing events. Mr. Molestra are you happy now with the position of the
00:30:35ACUS or is there still a possibility you could take away the authority that
00:30:39they have and if you do of course they could not organize any races in America.
00:30:43I am very happy because Borde Martin, the new executive president of ACUS, is a great
00:30:49friend. During the last two years we worked together and I have a new program
00:30:55for November. I go three weeks in USA for a meeting with the General Motors Ford
00:31:03company manager Mr. Edsel Ford and all the American club for preparing the
00:31:09future and the commune work for the success of the world motorsport.
00:31:15There have been in the past a few problems with Formula One even
00:31:19there have been perhaps problems between you and Foca. What about you and Bernie
00:31:24Eccleston? Now you're a very strong personality. Bernie Eccleston is a very
00:31:27strong personality and occasionally I think you two clash together. Is now
00:31:33everything peace, calm and tranquility? I think it's my philosophy we need right
00:31:40men in the right place and the trouble in the past time was because the
00:31:44commercial people take too much place in the sporting area. Now we have new
00:31:51structure. Mr. Eccleston is a very competent man, professional man for
00:31:55commercial problem and he has the responsibility of the commercial problem
00:31:59and we are the sporting power we control the credibility of the race the
00:32:04credibility for the competition and I think now it's a very good situation and
00:32:09it's a complete peace and we work together and this year you can see we
00:32:13have a fabulous championship with a big fight with a new rule and my hope is
00:32:20that we have for the future also American driver and American team in the
00:32:25World Championship. Welcome back to ESPN's coverage of the 1983 Dutch Grand Prix
00:32:38the 28th running of this great event. In total more than 100,000 spectators are
00:32:45packed around the 2.44 mile Dutch circuit along the seaside coast just
00:32:50north of the Zandvoort town itself. The Grand Prix is to be run over 72 laps a
00:32:56total distance of just over 185 miles and it should take around about one and
00:33:02a half hours to run. The first ever Dutch Grand Prix was held here in 1952
00:33:07and amazingly the fastest lap was just under 86 miles per hour. The track hasn't changed that much and the current lap record was held from last year's race of 1982 by Derek Warwick
00:33:21at a shade of just under 120 miles per hour.
00:33:25All of the 26 cars out of the pit lane now and to form up on the grid now.
00:33:31Danny Sullivan with the Benetton Tyrrell.
00:33:33The American driver is hoping to do well here at Zandvoort and there is the Constructors' Championship.
00:33:38Renault were first with 68 points, just behind them Ferrari with 65 points, the World Drivers' Championship
00:33:44Alain Prost with 51, Piquet with 37, Arnoux with 34, Tambay with 31 and those are the four men who are really in with a chance of the world title
00:33:54and most certainly the most coveted crown of any type of motor racing anywhere in the world.
00:34:00And so the twelfth round of the FIA World Championship back to get underway here at Zandvoort.
00:34:07All of the cars going off onto the warming up lap down this long straight into the 180 degree right-hander lane.
00:34:15Cars round the corner where there's always plenty of action and certainly a lot of overtaking manoeuvres.
00:34:22And so the cars coming back onto the grid, forming up there in a long line and managing to wink them off in later ways.
00:34:28A late arrival on the grid and taking his place. He should really have started from the back of the grid.
00:34:34Red lights are on and they're away and Tottenham have to play by marching.
00:34:38What an incredible start! He's the one who looks good at the beginning of the way.
00:34:41Cheever has gone from 11th to 2nd place, Prost to 3rd and in 4th place, the cars have travelled to place 5th.
00:34:51Cars out in front, no incidents at the moment. Up towards the Hoogenhout corner they come.
00:34:57It's Piquet, Cheever, incredible, Prost 3rd, the Tresi 4th, the Cesaris 5th, De Angelis 6th, Warrick in 7th place, Vardy in 8th place
00:35:06and everybody going every which way around that corner. Farby bringing out the rear.
00:35:12But look at the lead that Piquet has got, less than a mile from the start.
00:35:16Piquet leads Cheever in 2nd place. Now what an incredible start.
00:35:21Prost in 3rd place, the Tresi is 4th, the Cesaris and the Alfa is in 5th place.
00:35:28And the Parmalat Brabham really has pulled away, Nelson Piquet leading.
00:35:33Cheever, Prost, then comes Ricciardo Petresi, then Andrea de Cesaris, coming up to complete lap 1.
00:35:44Piquet leads the Parmalat Brabham, in 2nd place is Eddie Cheever and really that was one of the most amazing starts we've seen for a long time, from 11th to 2nd.
00:35:53So Piquet all with sparks there, hard in the braking, the car bottoming out as it brakes for Tarzan Corner.
00:36:00Arnoux goes through into 6th place, 7th is Elio de Angelis, 8th place is Derek Warrick, 9th place is Stephanie Hansen with the Honda, in 10th place Nigel Mansell.
00:36:10Cheever, Prost, 2nd, 3rd, Petresi 4th, the Cesaris in 5th place, 6th place Arnoux, 7th place de Angelis, 8th place Warrick, 9th place Hansen, 10th place Mansell, 11th place Baldi, 12th place is Marc Serra, 13th place is Benetton Till,
00:36:25and their way down in roundabout 20th place is Patrick Tambay who went from 2nd place on the grid right the way down to 20th place.
00:36:35So really quite an amazing start to the Dutch Grand Prix, and Piquet looks to be pulling away but Alain Prost is reeling in Eddie Cheever,
00:36:45and Prost will want to get past Cheever to bite into the lead that Nelson Piquet is building up with the Parmalat Brabham.
00:36:53Lap 2, still Nelson Piquet, 2nd place still Cheever, 3rd place Prost, 4th place Petresi, 5th place the Cesaris, 6th place Arnoux now slowly closing in on Andrea de Cesaris with the Turbo Alpha.
00:37:07So the turbos lead the way, 8th place is de Angelis being attacked by Derek Warrick, Warrick goes through under braking for Tarzan Corner,
00:37:14they're side by side around the Tarzan Corner, and Warrick goes through with the Candy Tolman heart there, upper place for Warrick into 8th place,
00:37:22and up into 17th place goes Patrick Tambay with the Ferrari, but the man in the lead no doubt about it, Brazilian Nelson Piquet a little bit wide at the Hoogenholtz,
00:37:31Cheever, Prost, Petresi, the Cesaris, the top 5 still the same as they were on the first lap,
00:37:39and Alain Prost closing in on his teammate Eddie Cheever, will the American driver give way to the man who leads the World Championship at the moment,
00:37:47the two Renault Turbos very close together indeed now.
00:37:52Coming up towards the Panorama Curve, Piquet, Cheever, Prost, Petresi, the Cesaris, Rene Arnoux, so the first Ferrari is only in 6th place,
00:38:05and Patrick Tambay's got a lot of work to do from the lowly start he got, he must have had some sort of problem on the line perhaps with gears, we know not what,
00:38:15and there Piquet leads, Cheever in 2nd, Prost 3rd, Petresi is closing in in 4th place, and Prost now definitely closing in on the tail of teammate Eddie Cheever,
00:38:27Albrecht at 12th, Rostock 13th, Watson 14th, Winkler 15th, Lauda 16th, Martseur in 17th place, 18th from the feet and dropping back into 19th place now, Tambay.
00:38:38His championship hopes could be fast evaporating, Patrick Tambay in a lot of trouble, Piquet still leads, Cheever 2nd, Prost 3rd, Petresi in 4th place,
00:38:47Ricciardo driving well, 1st retirement electee, Jean-Pierre Jarier with the Ligier, still Nelson Piquet leads, but I think that Prost is going to challenge the 2nd place out of Cheever,
00:38:58Slip Streetman out brakes into the Tarzan corner, Prost set into 2nd place, Cheever in 3rd place, and up another place into 12th place goes John Watson,
00:39:08could this be another real storm from the rear, but he's being attacked round the outside of Tarzan by the Tyrrell, but a brand new Benetton till 0-1-2, drops to 13th place, Nelson Piquet though still leads,
00:39:19and battles all the way down the field, it's quite incredible, and Cheever almost goes off on the exit of Hugenholtz, Johansson, Valdi going through, their 12th man, 13th,
00:39:32so Johansson dropped to 10th place, Mansell is in 9th place, up at the front, Prost 2nd, Cheever 3rd, Petresi 4th, and De Cesaris, I think his engine is about to blow,
00:39:42Cheever has dropped back into the clutch as a 4th place man, Ricciardo, Petresi, Alain Prost making inroads I think onto the race leader, Nelson Piquet,
00:39:51but the battle on for 3rd place now as well, as Piquet goes through, Prost in 2nd place, Cheever in 3rd, Petresi 4th, and a lot of smoke coming from 5th place man De Cesaris,
00:40:02and closing up on him, he's slowing right down now, and sure enough up into 5th place goes Reni Arnoux with the Ferrari, I'm sure that is Andrea De Cesaris' Alfa's race run,
00:40:13and sparks flying up once again from the lead car, Nelson Piquet as he breaks hard there, for Tarzan, corner, and Petresi attacking Cheever on the inside for 3rd place,
00:40:22Cheever though still in 3rd place, Petresi in 4th place, Arnoux closing on both of them in 5th place, and battles all the way down the field, 13th Rosberg, 14th the ATS of Winkelhoff,
00:40:3315th the McLaren Tag Turbo of Lauda, 16th the Tambay with the Ferrari, De Cesaris comes into the pits to retire, and we'll be right back after these short messages.
00:40:45Back to the ESPN Auto Racing 83 coverage of the Dutch Grand Prix, Piquet's just gone through our picture in the lead, Prost is in 2nd place, Cheever still in 3rd place,
00:40:55Trazee in 4th place, really challenging Cheever for that 3rd place, Derek Warwick going very well at the moment in 6th place, 7th the Angelus, 8th is Mantle, and there are the top 4 in your picture,
00:41:08Nelson Piquet with a palm-lap Brabham, powered of course by the BMW 4-cylinder turbo engine, he wants to win this race, gain back those valuable championship points,
00:41:19there's Derek Warwick having his best race of the season in 6th place with the candy Toleman heart, palm-lap Brabham still leads though, Piquet driving smoothly, just like a world champion elect perhaps,
00:41:32Cheever 3rd, Trazee in 4th place, Prost is still in 2nd place, but we turn our attention to this battle for 3rd place between Eddie Cheever with the Renault Turbo, and Ricciardo Patrese with the palm-lap Brabham,
00:41:48through the chicane they come, head up towards the Paranorama curve, and let's look down the list of retirements that we've had, we've had 2 so far, Jarier and the Cesaris, both we've seen retiring, and there in 5th place, closing in on 3rd and 4th place is René Arnoux with the Ferrari,
00:42:05Cheever 3rd, Patrese in 4th place, and Patrese challenging down the inside towards Tharzand though, 5th, René Arnoux with the Ferrari, René who relies 3rd in the world championship, 9th place is still Johansson,
00:42:2710th place now is John Watson, 11th place is Marabaldi, and it's quite incredible, there are battles all the way down the field, and Winkelhoff goes through on the inside, of the world champion who takes it, oh, left, right and centre, they almost collide, and Rosberg just gets through there, sorry about turning the attention away from the race leader, but there's so many good battles taking place during the course of the Dutch Grand Prix.
00:42:54The battle for 9th place, Stephanie Hansen with the Spirit Honda, greatly improved car, Watson 10th, Valde 11th place, 12th is Alboreto with a new Benetton Tyrrell, 13th is Winkelhoff, 14th is Lauda, 15th is Rosberg who's dropped right back, and 16th is Tambay in 21st place, the Benetton Tyrrell of Danny Sullivan.
00:43:13And the battle is on for 3rd place, Patrese tries to take Cheever, does so for 3rd place, but Cheever attacks coming down the inside in the Tarzan corner, but Ricciardo Patrese, new 3rd place man here in the Dutch Grand Prix, with the Parmalat Brabham in 4th place then, Eddie Cheever, Johansson still 9th, 10th place for John Watson, and John Watson driving an absolutely storming race, new 3rd place man, Patrese, 4th place Cheever, 5th place closing in on Cheever is Arnoux.
00:43:439th place Johansson, right behind him again, John Watson in 10th place.
00:43:493rd, 4th and 5th now closing out.
00:43:53Patrese in 3rd, Cheever in 4th, Ferrari of Arnoux in 5th, BMW vs Renault Turbo vs Ferrari Turbo.
00:44:04And once again we've seen the Jean Clair Special Lotuses not quite as quick as they were during qualifying on their race rubber.
00:44:15So 3rd, 4th and 5th place, and I'll tell you someone who's not that far behind in 6th place, Derek Warwick, the leading Pirelli runner, so Warwick driving an absolutely incredible race here.
00:44:28And Watson looking down the inside to get that place off Johansson who goes about side by side around the Tarzan corner but into 9th place goes John Watson with a McLaren, and up another place goes the Tag Turbo powered McLaren of Nicky Lauda.
00:44:46He's up into 13th place because the Winklots got ahead of both of them.
00:44:52Still the race leader though, Nelson Piquet.
00:44:572nd place Alain Prost, not really making that much of an impression on the race leader.
00:45:023rd place still, Patrese, 4th place Cheever, 5th place closing in on Cheever, seems to be René Arnoux with a Ferrari.
00:45:11But even at this stage Patrick Tambay is only up into 14th place.
00:45:16There's our race leader, the Pamela Rabham.
00:45:203rd place, the 2nd Pamela Rabham, 4th Patrese, 4th Cheever, 5th the Ferrari, number 28 is René Arnoux.
00:45:2910th place Johansson under pressure now from Valdi 11th, Winklot 12th.
00:45:3413th now goes Patrick Tambay ahead of Nicky Lauda who drops to 14th place.
00:45:40And what a race, battles all the way down the field.
00:45:44Cheever 4th, Arnoux in 5th place closing in.
00:45:486th place still, the Toleman of Derek Warwick.
00:45:527th place now is Nigel Mansell, de Angelis has gone missing.
00:45:57So upper place goes Johansson.
00:46:00And Tambay looking for a way I think now past Manfred Winklhot, not an easy man to get past I might add.
00:46:07And 4th place under a lot of pressure from Arnoux and Arnoux goes through on the inside.
00:46:10Arnoux goes through on the inside, Cheever tries to fight back.
00:46:14But René Arnoux with the Ferrari goes through into 4th place.
00:46:18We're on lap 15 of this 72 lap race.
00:46:22But please join us again after this short break and we'll have more ESPN coverage of the Dutch Grand Prix.
00:46:30Just as Stefanie Johansson is about to lose 9th place to Mauro Valdi but again side by side racing around Tarzan Corner.
00:46:3710th Johansson, 11th Winklhot.
00:46:4012th will be Tambay.
00:46:42There's new 4th place man is René Arnoux, still the race leader Nelson Piquet.
00:46:48But Alain Prost is closing in on Piquet's Parma lap problem.
00:46:53René Arnoux pulling away in 4th place.
00:46:56Cheever is in 5th place.
00:46:58Could he come under pressure from Derek Warwick?
00:47:01There's Danny Sullivan way down the order now about to be lapped by the race leader Nelson Piquet.
00:47:07And sure enough Tambay now right on the tail of Manfred Winklhot.
00:47:16They've both displaced the spirit Honda of Stefanie Johansson.
00:47:20The spirit Honda having its best race today in the Grand Prix series here at the Dutch Grand Prix.
00:47:26Through the Hoogenholtz goes our race leader Nelson Piquet.
00:47:30Close up of 2nd place man, World Championship leader, remember Alain Prost leads the championship.
00:47:34Need to remind you by 14 points.
00:47:37And 3rd place man now under a lot of pressure from René Arnoux.
00:47:41Race leader with those sparks still flying from the rear of the Parma lap problem.
00:47:47As he breaks hard for the right hand of the Tarzan corner.
00:47:513rd place man, Parma lap problem of Riccardo Patrese.
00:47:56René Arnoux with a Ferrari in 4th place right on his tail.
00:47:59And Niki Lauda goes past the spirit Honda of Audazi.
00:48:06It's again side by side around Tarzan corner.
00:48:09Up into 12th spot goes Niki Lauda with a brand new McLaren Turbo.
00:48:153rd and 4th still very close together.
00:48:20René Arnoux must do well in this race to help him win the championship title.
00:48:29Arnoux who won in Montreal, who won in the German Grand Prix.
00:48:35Riccardo Patrese only has a 3rd place actually in Germany.
00:48:39He's only got 4 points in the World Championship and going well here.
00:48:43And obviously very important to the Parma lap problem team that he stays in front of René Arnoux.
00:48:47Because that will help Nelson Piquet in his World Championship chase.
00:48:51On the left right side tries every which way to get into 3rd place does René Arnoux.
00:48:55But no way says Riccardo Patrese who's obviously in a very determined mood.
00:49:01Closing into 6th place, 6th place still for Derek Warwick.
00:49:05Now coming under pressure from Nigel Mansell.
00:49:08Mansell with a John Blair Lotus in 7th place.
00:49:12Up another place goes Patrick Tambay.
00:49:15Tambay now up into 10th place.
00:49:18Tambay with a Ferrari. He's dropped right down to 21st place on the first lap from that 2nd place on the grid.
00:49:24And once again trying to get into 3rd place goes René Arnoux.
00:49:31Patrese 3rd, René Arnoux with the Ferrari in 4th place.
00:49:41And Arnoux is in an ideal position to try and pass going into Tarzan Corner.
00:49:46Through goes our race leader. Post closing a little bit on the race leader.
00:49:50Who will it be though in 3rd place?
00:49:52Arnoux looks to the inside and tries to outbrake Patrese in 3rd place and does it.
00:49:58So René Arnoux, new 3rd place man here at the Dutch Grand Prix.
00:50:03Arnoux 3rd, Patrese in 4th place.
00:50:06Thieboufou, Warwick 6th, Mansell in 7th place.
00:50:10Let's have a look at that again, that overtaking maneuver into 3rd place.
00:50:15Arnoux cleanly outbrakes Patrese for that 3rd place.
00:50:21And into the pits comes the McLaren Turbo of Niki Lauda.
00:50:29Lauda who got as high as 12th place.
00:50:32And I don't think this is going to be a scheduled stop there.
00:50:36Changing tyres, it doesn't matter of course.
00:50:38And Thieboufou is now right up with 4th place man Patrese.
00:50:43So Thieboufou trying to get up into 4th place, roughly outside of Tarzan.
00:50:46The only man who tried that and got away with that was Marianne Dretty in 1979.
00:50:51And Mansell attacking for 6th place.
00:50:54Mansell tries to go through into 6th place and Leeds is braking for the very last moment.
00:50:58And he goes off!
00:51:00Nigel Mansell has gone off on the Tarzan corner.
00:51:03Well as we see this accident in replay, we recall what Nigel said.
00:51:09Quite funny the way that drivers have this almost premonition of what may or may not happen.
00:51:14So Mansell falling foul of his own out-braking manoeuvre as we rejoin the race.
00:51:19And this battle on for 4th place between Riccardo Patrese and Eddie Thieboufou.
00:51:244th and 5th.
00:51:266th of course is Derek Warwick.
00:51:29Mansell is out.
00:51:31Talia De Angelis is also out.
00:51:33Niki Lauda is out.
00:51:35Danny Sullivan retired also on lap 20.
00:51:37And Watson is challenging for 6th place would you believe.
00:51:40Watson with a normally aspirated McLaren.
00:51:42The North Ford Cosworth DFY.
00:51:45And he gets past into 6th place.
00:51:48Past Derek Warwick who drops to 7th place.
00:51:51Up into 8th place now goes the Ferrari of Patrick Tambay.
00:51:57And there's our top 6.
00:51:59Piquet leads.
00:52:015 seconds behind him is Prost.
00:52:03Then Arnoux.
00:52:05Patrese 4th. Thieboufou 5th. Watson 6th.
00:52:07The battle really on now for 4th place.
00:52:10Patrese but Cheever is closing right up on him.
00:52:13Patrese though still in that 4th place.
00:52:18Seems to try.
00:52:20Oh through goes Cheever.
00:52:22I think Patrese missed the gear.
00:52:24Cheever is through into 4th place.
00:52:265th place is Patrese.
00:52:286th place still Watson.
00:52:30And there Bernie Eccleston watching his two palm laps.
00:52:33Brabham's one in the lead.
00:52:35One dropped down to 5th place.
00:52:36First to pit stop that's Jacques Lafitte.
00:52:39Lafitte down in 17th place.
00:52:41And there he's bunged his pits on a bit.
00:52:43He's started to rotate his rear wheels.
00:52:45Which has caused a problem for the two mechanics putting on the new rims.
00:52:50The new tyres and causing a delay in the fuel stop of Jacques Lafitte.
00:52:55With the Saudia Williams.
00:52:57And this is really the time when the fuel stops are going to count.
00:53:01It's going to be a race victory or not.
00:53:03In comes the Toleman of Derek Warwick.
00:53:04Who was in 7th place.
00:53:07Both Brabham and Renault getting ready for those all important fuel stops.
00:53:12Derek Warwick gets out of the pits.
00:53:14Gets away cleanly.
00:53:16And will be back with more race action from the Dutch Grand Prix after these shows.
00:53:26So catastrophe I think there for the Renault team.
00:53:30With regards to Eddie Cheever.
00:53:31But look at this.
00:53:33Alain Prost has closed right up on the race leader.
00:53:35It's Piquet still leading.
00:53:37And look at the sparks flying from the rear of his car.
00:53:39They're laughing tail enders here.
00:53:41This is a very exciting part of the race.
00:53:43Race leader Nelson Piquet just leading his arch rival for the World Championship.
00:53:49Alain Prost with the Renault.
00:53:51First and second within one second of each other.
00:53:55We're over half distance.
00:53:57Neither of the first or second drivers have made their fuel stop.
00:54:01They're going to do so soon.
00:54:03Patrese is coming in for the normal Parmalat Brabham pit stop.
00:54:07And the Brabham crew were so well versed in the art of pit stops.
00:54:14Down go the internal jacks.
00:54:16Away goes Patrese.
00:54:19That was an 11.5 second pit stop.
00:54:21But all eyes on the battle for the lead.
00:54:23And Prost looks for the inside.
00:54:25First one way then the other.
00:54:27Prost goes through or does he?
00:54:29They're side by side.
00:54:31Alain Prost in second.
00:54:33The Renault challenging the BMW turbo in the back of that Parmalat Brabham.
00:54:37It's Nelson Piquet who knows he must win this race.
00:54:41Prost in second place.
00:54:43Perhaps he'll be happy to finish in second place.
00:54:45Or will he? He's making sincere efforts I think to get that lead.
00:54:49First and second they could not be closer.
00:54:52They could be covered just about by a handkerchief.
00:54:54They come onto the main pit straight.
00:54:57And will Alain Prost make a challenge into the Tarzan corner?
00:55:01He's in the mainstream of Nelson Piquet, the race leader.
00:55:04All eyes on this incredible battle for the lead.
00:55:07Looking to the inside.
00:55:09Tries to outbrake. No way.
00:55:11Has the door firmly closed in his face by the race leader Nelson Piquet.
00:55:16Eddie Cheever coming again slowly out of the pits.
00:55:19I think we can discount Cheever and his Renault turbo from this race.
00:55:24Found perhaps to be a retirement after getting his high a second place in the early stages of the Dutch Grand Prix.
00:55:30In comes seventh place man Patrick Tambay.
00:55:34An important pit stop for him.
00:55:36Trying to make up ground.
00:55:38Knows he must score World Championship points here in Holland.
00:55:41Has failed to score in the last two rounds of the World Championship.
00:55:45In comes the man who was in sixth place, John Watson.
00:55:53The wheels have changed.
00:55:57Down goes the jacks.
00:55:59And away goes Watson with a lot of wheelspin.
00:56:03And look at the battle for the lead.
00:56:06Coming up now to lap 41.
00:56:09And Piquet just leading still from Alain Prost.
00:56:12Eddie Cheever sure enough is stopped.
00:56:14He's getting out of the car. Cheever a retirement.
00:56:17But all eyes on the battle for the lead.
00:56:19Is Nelson Piquet leading but only just from Alain Prost.
00:56:22Prost may well try down the inside at Tarzan corner.
00:56:25Piquet weaving trying to get him out of the slipstream.
00:56:27But Prost tries down the inside and that breaks him.
00:56:30And he's losing it.
00:56:32And he's knocked off Piquet.
00:56:34Piquet's gone.
00:56:36Oh that is amazing.
00:56:38Piquet has been knocked out by his arch rival Alain Prost.
00:56:41And Piquet will be a furious man.
00:56:45Prost has got down the inside.
00:56:47Lost it I think under braking.
00:56:49That's got on some sand.
00:56:51Piquet totally unhurt.
00:56:53The car is very lightly damaged.
00:56:55And Piquet out of the race after leading it for 41 laps.
00:56:59For 72 laps.
00:57:01Just about to come up to his pit stop.
00:57:03And a great round of applause goes up to this great Brazilian driver.
00:57:07Nelson Piquet with a palm lap ram.
00:57:09Out of the race and on the far side of the circuit.
00:57:12The new race leader Alain Prost.
00:57:14But he's slowing.
00:57:16Prost is slowing.
00:57:18And look at his right front tyre.
00:57:20It's blistering badly.
00:57:21Coming out then towards his pit stop.
00:57:24And he locks up under braking.
00:57:26You can see it now.
00:57:28He's heading towards the barrier.
00:57:30And he's gone.
00:57:32Prost has also crashed out within two miles of the place
00:57:35where he knocked off Nelson Piquet.
00:57:37So both of the leading world championship contenders
00:57:40who lie first and second in the world championship
00:57:43are out of the 1983 Dachshund Grand Prix.
00:57:46And the world championship has been blown wide open.
00:57:50Alain Prost out of the Renault.
00:57:53Totally disgusted with himself.
00:57:56And there suspended from the crane wires
00:58:00is the palm lap ram.
00:58:02Not badly damaged as you can see.
00:58:05And really this race has turned into an incredible battle
00:58:10at the front.
00:58:11Because we have a new race leader.
00:58:13The third new race leader.
00:58:15Probably within two and a half miles.
00:58:17It's René Arnoux with the Ferrari.
00:58:19But Tracy will go up into second place.
00:58:21And there is Alain Prost.
00:58:23The man who led the world championship by 14 points.
00:58:26But if Arnoux wins this race,
00:58:28that lead will be cut down to eight.
00:58:30He said the world championship will be wide open.
00:58:33And he's got it.
00:58:35He's got it.
00:58:37He's got it.
00:58:39He's got it.
00:58:41So please join us after this short break
00:58:44when we'll be back with more ESPN coverage
00:58:47of the Dachshund Grand Prix.
00:58:49There are the leading positions after 50 laps.
00:58:51And when you join us after the break,
00:58:53we'll talk to both Nelson Piquet and to Alain Prost
00:58:56about that very controversial incident.
00:58:59Back to ESPN's Auto Racing 83 coverage
00:59:02of this incredible Dachshund Grand Prix.
00:59:04Nelson Piquet back in the pits talking to Bernie Eccleston.
00:59:07There's the race leader, René Arnoux.
00:59:09He's got a fairly sizable lead
00:59:12over the battle now on for second place
00:59:14between the Parmalat Brabham of Riccardo Patrese
00:59:17and third place, the Ferrari of Patrick Tambay,
00:59:20who really has driven now very hard
00:59:22to come up into that third place.
00:59:24Well, of course, the real story of the race so far
00:59:27is that controversial incident
00:59:29between Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost.
00:59:31And we now speak to both the drivers.
00:59:33Nelson, what happened in the accident, in your own words?
00:59:35It looked as if Prost lost it after under braking.
00:59:38Yeah, he already got me.
00:59:40He was inside. I didn't have nothing to do.
00:59:42I left the space for him to go inside.
00:59:44And he lost the brakes and hit my car in the middle.
00:59:48What are your sort of feelings at a time like that
00:59:51when you know that's that important to you
00:59:53in the World Championship?
00:59:55The best I can do. I do the best I can.
00:59:57And I do my job the best I can.
00:59:59And when something happens like this, what can you do?
01:00:01It's more racing.
01:00:03You were slowing down and Prost did catch you quite rapidly
01:00:05because you had something like a five-second lap lead.
01:00:07Yeah, we had a lot of trouble with the traffic.
01:00:09That was a big problem. Traffic all the time.
01:00:11And also my rear tyres were a little bit bad.
01:00:14But I was waiting for the pit stop
01:00:16and get fresh tyres and start to fight again.
01:00:19Finally, if Alain Prost was watching
01:00:21through that television camera there,
01:00:23what exactly would you say to him now about the incident?
01:00:25No, I don't know.
01:00:27I'm not saying it was his mistake.
01:00:32I don't think he did it on purpose
01:00:34because it's also his championship.
01:00:35But, well, everybody can make mistakes.
01:00:41What happened down in Tarzan Corner?
01:00:43I tried to pass Nelson
01:00:45but I had a problem with the front brakes.
01:00:48And my car was on the left in the right corner
01:00:51and I touched him just a bit
01:00:53but just enough to have a problem with the front wing after.
01:00:56And in the first corner before the straight,
01:00:58before the pit, I had a problem with his front wing
01:01:00and he passed under the car
01:01:02and I went completely straight.
01:01:04You say that that is racing
01:01:06and that's exactly what Nelson Piquet said.
01:01:08It could happen to anyone.
01:01:10But do you feel that you left your braking too late
01:01:12this one particular time?
01:01:14No, I don't think I braked later than the lap before.
01:01:17But I think if I did, for sure it's not his fault.
01:01:21It's my fault anyway.
01:01:23But I think for me it was not a big risk.
01:01:25He was sure to pass him in this corner
01:01:27and I was just...
01:01:29But I had a problem with the front brakes
01:01:30because I think I was a bit too on the right of the track
01:01:35and there was some sound on the track.
01:01:38And I had a problem with only one front wheel
01:01:42and I went on the left.
01:01:44Monza is a very important race for you then.
01:01:46Yeah, but Ferrari is very quick in Monza
01:01:48but I think Nelson is very quick too.
01:01:50And I'm sorry for him today.
01:01:52I hope he will win the race in Monza
01:01:54and maybe if I finish second
01:01:56it's a good place for me.
01:01:57Well, we're into the closing stages
01:01:59of the Dutch Grand Prix.
01:02:01Still René Arnoux leads
01:02:03in second place Petrezzi.
01:02:05Third place is Tombe
01:02:07but Tombe really is now closing in
01:02:09on Ricciardo Petrezzi.
01:02:12There through goes René Arnoux, the race leader.
01:02:15Can he win the race for Ferrari for himself?
01:02:18And look at the battle on for second place
01:02:21between the Pamelette-Bravo not Petrezzi.
01:02:24Less than a second behind
01:02:25him now in third place
01:02:27is Patrick Tombe
01:02:29who came up from 21st place
01:02:31at the end of lap one.
01:02:33Fourth place now the incredible
01:02:35John Watson with the McLaren
01:02:37powered by the normally aspirated Ford Cosworth.
01:02:40In fifth place still going strong
01:02:42Derek Warwick with the Candy Tolman.
01:02:48And in sixth place will be
01:02:50Mauro Baldi with the Alfa Turbo.
01:02:53But the man who possibly could have scored
01:02:55world championship points
01:02:57at the Dutch Grand Prix
01:02:59Manfred Winkelhoff with the ATS
01:03:01who's been going very well in the race.
01:03:03You remember he was having that battle
01:03:05with Patrick Tombe earlier on
01:03:07is being disqualified by the organisers
01:03:09because if you remember
01:03:11before the start of the race
01:03:13he did actually start rather late
01:03:15on the parade lap and the rules state
01:03:17that if you start off late on that parade lap
01:03:19you must start from the rear end of the grid
01:03:20so he sort of weaved his way up
01:03:22into his starting position
01:03:24and there you can see Manfred Winkelhoff
01:03:26really angry
01:03:28getting out of his ATS Formula One car
01:03:30and marching off behind the pits.
01:03:35Manfred Winkelhoff there
01:03:37a very very annoyed driver indeed
01:03:40I certainly wouldn't like to go
01:03:42and try and interview him now.
01:03:45So Winkelhoff with the ATS out of the race
01:03:47after a good showing during the course of the race.
01:03:49Powered of course by the BMW turbo engine
01:03:51and the current world champion
01:03:53Keke Rosberg coming in
01:03:55changing the wheels
01:03:57he's shaking his head
01:03:59lifting his visor
01:04:01and I think Rosberg
01:04:03yes, Rosberg a retirement
01:04:05from the Dutch Grand Prix.
01:04:07Rosberg who got as high as 10th place
01:04:10out of the race
01:04:12not really going that well
01:04:14in these recent races
01:04:16when you consider that John Watson
01:04:18and there's his battle
01:04:20really joined now
01:04:22for second and third place
01:04:24between Riccardo Patrese
01:04:26and Patrick Tambay
01:04:28most important that Patrese stays
01:04:30in that second place
01:04:32taking those valuable world championship points
01:04:34two world championship points
01:04:36away from Patrick Tambay.
01:04:39Hamlet Brabham
01:04:41leads the Ferrari
01:04:43and really throughout the course
01:04:45of this Dutch Grand Prix
01:04:46for first and second
01:04:48then for third and fourth
01:04:50and fifth and sixth
01:04:52all the way down
01:04:54and off goes Bruno Giacomelli
01:04:56Bruno Giacomelli with the Candy Tolman
01:04:58who was in 12th place
01:05:00having a little spin there
01:05:02you see it in slow motion
01:05:04through comes race leader René Arnoux
01:05:06well on his way
01:05:08to possibly his third victory
01:05:10of the 1983 season
01:05:12if he wins here of course
01:05:14he'll hoist himself up
01:05:16against both Nelson Piquet
01:05:18and Patrick Tambay
01:05:20second and third though
01:05:22still very close together indeed
01:05:26into the Hugenholtz
01:05:30and now the Ferrari
01:05:32closer than it's ever been before
01:05:34to the Parmalat Brabham
01:05:36right on the gearbox
01:05:41out of the Hugenholtz
01:05:43they go down the fast left right hander
01:05:45into the Hunsberg
01:05:48then into this corner called the Scheiblack
01:05:53past the East Tunnel
01:05:55into the Panorama Curve they go
01:05:57second and third
01:05:59still very close together indeed
01:06:01and a violent puff of smoke
01:06:03from the rear of the Parmalat Brabham
01:06:05and through into second place
01:06:07goes Patrick Tambay
01:06:09and the Brabham is slowing
01:06:11Patrese is slowing in third place
01:06:12and yes
01:06:14Riccardo Patrese
01:06:16although still going
01:06:18is slowing right down
01:06:20so it is Patrick Tambay's
01:06:22Ferrari 1-2 at the moment
01:06:24and Thierry Boutsa
01:06:26who was as high as 8th place
01:06:28has blown up in a big way
01:06:30with the arrows
01:06:33so up into 8th place now
01:06:35will go Marc Surer
01:06:37but no doubt about the race leader
01:06:39it is still René Arnoux
01:06:40with the Ferrari
01:06:42in 7th place is Stephanie Hansen
01:06:44with the Spirit Honda
01:06:46going very well
01:06:48and there is the new 2nd place man
01:06:50Patrick Tambay with the Ferrari
01:06:52and there in 3rd place
01:06:54is John Watson with the McLaren
01:06:56in 4th place now
01:06:58will be the Candy Telemann
01:07:00of Derrick White
