00:00your super garden starts here Jorge Eileen Debbie Chris Rosie are all
00:18competing to create the super garden looks the amount of work the winning
00:27designer will have their garden recreated at Ireland's premier garden show
00:31Lord be a bloom joining the ranks of Ireland's top garden designers
00:39okay you're on overseeing the competition judges Brian Burke representing Woody's
00:52and former super garden winner Monica Alvarez representing Dulux exteriors
00:59Karl Marx representing Bored Beer
01:06similar wines better five designers only one can go to bloom Baker Hall in Navin
01:17built by Glenvae homes is the location for this year's super garden the designers
01:22will be creating gardens for homeowners who have recently purchased these new
01:26homes with the support of Meath County Council and the land development agency
01:31through the affordable housing scheme each designer has a budget of 15,000 euro to
01:36complete their design working alongside each other in the estate they have just
01:40three weeks to build their gardens the competition is on this week's designer is
01:47Debbie Brophy from Newbridge County Kildare I couldn't believe it when I got
01:51the call my stomach dropped to be honest I felt so lucky to be given this
01:56opportunity Debbie's path to garden design came via a degree in fine art painting I
02:01studied fine art painting in Limerick School of Art and Design things didn't
02:06exactly go to plan and I didn't really channel myself into that my full potential in
02:13recent years Debbie was working full-time but realized she still had a
02:17creative calling I was working in a very very busy fabric shop again been
02:24surrounded by creative people and I suppose it inspired me to follow my
02:30creativity which led me to the garden in Debbie recently received her degree from
02:35the Garden Design Academy was doing the course she had her daughter puppy who is now
02:39three it was very intense doing the course and mind and poppy at the same time
02:44people have always said that children change your life but you don't really
02:48understand that till you have one it became really important to me to show
02:53her that you have to do what you really want to do Debbie's passion project has
02:59been her own garden that she's been working on for a number of years but now
03:03she gets to create her first garden for someone else and has just three weeks to do
03:08so first fall project from start to finish it's gonna be a real challenge but
03:13it's gonna be a great experience and can't wait to get stuck in and Debbie will
03:17be getting stuck in for Andrew Jason and their son Steve I am a nurse by
03:23promotion and Jason is also working in the health sector we always work like
03:27opposite shift and I'm doing both days and nights so it's very important for me to
03:33relax when I'm at home so I think garden would be a better place for us to relax
03:38as a family so we want to make a good garden like you know in in our house
03:43actually Debbie meets the family and they have a strong idea of what they would like
03:48nice to meet you hi yeah mainly we are looking for a nature friendly family garden okay a garden that we can
03:55use in all climates in the wintertime we can sit and you know some fireplace or
04:00small fireplace like that this family has high hopes for the process we are hoping
04:05our garden will be one of the best gardens in the Baker Hall and you're so
04:08fun so it's really great to the family we're talking about nature and want to
04:15incorporate that into the garden because it's really important to me and my garden
04:19and in my designs Debbie hopes to impress the judges with her be happy wildlife
04:24garden inspired by a honeybee colony that moved into her own garden last year to
04:30bring the theme to life she will be building hexagonal planting beds in the
04:34center of the garden which will be full to the brim of pollinating plants to
04:38attract bees and butterflies paving at the front will give the family a space to
04:43entertain as you move through the walkway there will be a bench to sit on and
04:47take in the garden from all angles at the back of the garden there will be an
04:52all-weather covered pergola for the family to relax in from here they can
04:56take in the sound of a trickling water feature right next to this there is a
05:00play area for their son Steve with toys and grass to keep him entertained day one
05:06Debbie arrives with her partner Gary by her side Gary my partner it will be by my
05:12sides we're a great team and I will be using him to my full advantage in the
05:18garden Debbie is double-checking her design before they dig in so that's kind
05:23of the base shape of what our flower beds are going to be like and there's going to
05:26be three of those down the center and they're going to be filled with beautiful
05:30colorful plants I think we're good with the measurements anyway it looks like it
05:34fits measurements checked Gary is straight to work with the turf cutter
05:38I've done it fits in her own garden before with this so we know she's a beast
05:42anyway just waiting for Gary to get the machine going and then we can start
05:51lifting the tariff it's taken out come on Gary
05:57and we have good turn it on yeah this is my brother Philip he's coming to give us a
06:15hand-in for a few days cutting the turf and taking it out to the skip
06:19I've had 10 ton bags of hardcore and then 3 of heaven sand for you perfect oh my god it looks a lot
06:34oh wow that looks like fun doesn't it oh yeah it keeps going tons of fun tons of fun before the
06:45hard core is brought in they have to remove more soil to get to the correct
06:49depth if you could start rotating loosen up this soil and we'll get this new soil out
06:55you had a very messy day today I just came after a nap and completely the lawn sweat gone the
07:06digging is taking longer than expected in this garden this top it is the real tough
07:10one for the guys it's a probably about that deep that we need to go we weren't able to quite fit
07:17a digger in around the corner to get it into the garden like the other designers have been lucky enough
07:23so that's why it's all muscle in here and very happy faces good for the soul bit of manual labor
07:31so last summer a colony of bees built a beautiful honeycomb in a roof of our shed was just stunning
07:43the structure it's amazing what they can build it just blew my mind and so that's kind of where we've
07:50took the hexagon from and incorporated that into a wildlife themed garden
08:02the digging is finally finished start bringing stuff in
08:09the team brings in the hardcore as a base for the pavement
08:14very exciting because we're actually kind of moving on now we're getting little things done
08:18so what we'll do next is bring in a couple of barrels of hardcore 10 tons of it to be precise
08:27jason's out helping us again today he loves to get stuck in
08:33even though we were like a bit down yesterday seemed like we're a bit behind
08:38it really feels like we're motoring on today
08:40we're probably a little behind in where i thought in my head that i was going to be
08:49do you think you're going to get everything done really quickly it's just your mental you're just
08:55like i'll just do that i'll do that and i'll do that but that's not how it works i suppose but that's
09:00not how it works in super garden with a strict three-week build with a lot of hard work done
09:05it's finally time for paving to begin in debbie's garden
09:16so
09:20gary has been working on the hexagonal planting beds and now is the moment of truth
09:25cut at 30 degrees which leaves 60 degree angles on the beams themselves either side which makes it 120
09:30in a comb which when all stuck together perfectly hopefully makes a perfect hexagon
09:35so debbie is buzzing it's a beautiful hexagon flip it on the side and just drag it now
09:52you can't drag it well not drag it but you know what i mean lift it yeah you all right
09:57i'm just so happy here but does little steve love it do you like it yes yes every day like even
10:10even i'm at work actually i am so eager to know what is happening here so like i always make a call
10:15during the break time to jason he's an improvement he's an improvement so excited and curious to know
10:21like what is happening every day like anchu judge brian burke is curious to see what is going on in
10:31the garden debbie brian how are you how are you straight away he wants to discuss the cladding on
10:37the boundary walls the cladding are we talking horizontal like two by ones or something like that
10:43three by one is there a shadow gap maybe three or four mil 10 mil do you need to paint the wall if
10:48you're doing the 10 mil shadow gap um i was actually just going to put up um some fabric
10:58time consumed that's all i was worried about again i think it's quite clear that you can manage things
11:06so i think you've ample time to paint that wall the fabric is yeah it works yeah but
11:14i prefer to see a painted wall there you're going to come and help me now aren't you
11:18you don't need help you've loads of help look at all this look at all you're after doing
11:23thanks for calling in all right talk to you debbie cheers thanks bye bye
11:28so it wouldn't take long to roll on a couple of coats of good black masonry paint onto that wall
11:33i hadn't anticipated having to do it but it's just another little job to add to the list
11:39after a good night's sleep debbie is straight into her to-do list wow that's pink
11:45okay debbie is embracing brian's suggestion she's now painting the walls
11:52judge brian burke will be happy but at the other end of the garden gary is not so happy
11:58little issue
11:59um so we've a little bit of a gap here where the beds are to come up against the paving
12:10we have a small gap here and a large gap here
12:14because we're all a bit rushed we're making silly mistakes and
12:17see the consequences now we're a bit disappointed really because it's really important to get
12:26everything really right um i know it's very geometric kind of layout and that so
12:35once you're off somewhere it kind of has a knock-on effect
12:38coming up
12:56your super garden starts here
13:08welcome back to super garden
13:13before the break debbie discovered she had miscalculated the borders between the patio
13:18and her hexagonal planters so paver lorkan is back to make some adjustments
13:23at the end of the world it happens on a small job big job doesn't matter but let me sort it
13:28it's kind of been stressing me out a little bit so i can't wait to get that
13:31all sorted so it's time's the only real issue that we've got fighting this
13:40each of our designers has been given 5 000 euros to spend on plants from irish nurseries
13:45what the designers plant will play a big part in how they do in the competition
13:50i want my planting scheme to be really immersive for the family so a lot of taste textures fragrances
13:59a lot of things to look at this is lucantum super bomb it is really bee friendly i love the white
14:08flowers because against everything else they really pop and bring the whole kind of scheme alive
14:13oh my god i can't believe it's all going to the garden yeah
14:22as the plants arrive debbie's moon gate is being installed just before planting day in navan debbie
14:28has been working in direct competition with her fellow designers and today she must get them to work
14:34for her and plant her garden good morning if i could get the two strong guys to battle this olive first
14:44of all that would be great and the lovely ladies can just potter away in the flower beds there great
14:51i'm a lady
14:55okay all right one two three
14:57all right straight to work as debbie's statement olive tree is first to be planted slightly towards
15:04you chris if you can judge carol marks arrives to debbie's garden carol's job is to make sure
15:10planting is done correctly today she's here to support debbie and guide her helpers so you're happy with
15:16that debbie hello hello everybody hi how are you wow what great progress so one two three four
15:24five six kind of little planted areas and you've really laid them out very well i have to say
15:30debbie's getting good use from her competition as they're digging straight in chris could i have a
15:35wee bit of help digging here with your big spade i do have my spade with me but that that is a
15:42fantastic implement that's good yeah they have the little serrations there so if you've got like a
15:46thick root brilliant straight through that's super that's great isn't it brilliant yeah recent garden
15:54design graduate debbie is still getting good marks i mean what a fabulous drawing the main drawing is
16:01underneath and then this is my coding from the plant leos keeps you and everybody guided the overlay is
16:09it's great it's a very clever idea another tree for jorge and chris to plant as the grapevine is
16:16ready to find its home this is a grapevine that has been trained in an umbrella shape and i mean i just
16:23think it's a spectacular specimen it's beautiful there are some little grapes growing on it there's
16:29certainly a few varieties that do okay and will give a crop of grapes in our climate it looks like it's a
16:36black grape is it a black green yeah black grape yeah it will require pruning yes what do you think
16:43karen i think that's perfect yeah great lovely meanwhile rosie has noticed something strange in
16:49the grasses it's called easy grass and it's so easy even a bloke can do it look how patronizing that is
16:56or maybe maybe it grows up into a lovely hunky man he's eaten the ground there's only room for one
17:02hunky man in this garden albeit as much neater than this guy's i'm way more looking than that you are
17:08much better looking debbie is going for uniformity in the planting across her three larger flower beds
17:16but something is not adding up yeah i think that looks like we're missing um one two three four
17:23there probably should have been one here i hate even numbers yes i'd be stressed as well
17:28normally you'd plant in odd numbers so threes five nines and it's weird but it definitely does look
17:36better it looks more natural it does look more natural yeah yeah we might have to rob one from here
17:43tada now found one that makes more sense now we're all happier i think yeah definitely debbie wants the
17:53family to learn and grow with this garden one example is an apple tree that is being planted it's self
17:59fertile basically the coronet is a miniature apple tree yeah but it has two different varieties of apple
18:07on the one tree yeah they're actually bred in ireland by one of our growers down in wexford
18:13so that's a real coup for us in ireland to have developed this and rosie is engaging in some bio
18:20engineering herself we're just planting out some men and um just a bit of water maybe a bit of whiskey
18:27every now and again these will grow really well it's low maintenance high pleasure
18:33we'll see i found another man for you quick stick him in there you go
18:38what you'll be able to harvest them at the end of the year do you think
18:40debbie needs fewer men and more plants in the ground
18:53her fellow competitors have given debbie as much help as they can planting day comes to an end and
18:59they all head back to their own gardens very jealous i have to say um i'm really worried now because it
19:06looks brilliant and i definitely don't have the same kind of density of that so now i'm
19:11shaking in my boots as they say
19:16the plants are in but debbie only has a couple of days left to finish the cladding and paint a mural
19:22on the back wall as a nod to the family's indian heritage despite the best efforts of debbie and her
19:28team there's still a lot of work to do on the last day before the midnight deadline yeah we're working
19:34to the wire i have to get the boat hotels finished the climbers on pergola painted the grass done the
19:42gravel brought in a bit more planting guys have been great and uh hopefully we can keep the momentum
19:49going and the family want to make sure they keep well fueled for one last push let's come and have
19:55some food now just take a few minutes break working so hard for us so yeah
20:07debbie's competitor rosie has offered her services after finishing her own garden
20:13five to ten guys are working on the grass
20:25three two one happy new year
20:46the gang have been absolutely fantastic the battle to the end fair place from all over a long day
20:51the last three weeks long three weeks unbelievably proud of her yeah she's amazing
21:03three weeks ago this was the space debbie was given to turn into a be happy wildlife garden
21:10this is debbie brofey's entry to super garden
21:22so
21:40brian monica and carol inspect debbie's garden is not so clever will it make them happy recent garden
21:56design graduate debbie was tasked with creating a nature family friendly space for her first garden
22:02design has she impressed the judges time to find out hi debbie oh yeah the first point i want to
22:10pick on is color color color you're absolutely delivered i can tell you're an artist you are able
22:19to lead the eye with the color tell us what what happened what was the issue with time
22:26we did lose a bit of time at the beginning because we couldn't get a digger in and we spent
22:31four days excavating the garden and then that kind of caught up on us a little bit
22:37number one is the grass yeah i know the grass i mean what happened can you explain what happened
22:42uh it went down at 11 o'clock at the last night in the dark i know it's not a great job if you've
22:49ever been to a show like bloom one of the first things they do is get the grass down and then come
22:54up with a method of protecting it because it knits it allows judges to walk on it it needs time big
23:00lesson learned and debbie i have to say i did notice that the climbers are under stress they are
23:07definitely they were suffering from lack of water they probably weren't planted on time
23:12they also went in the last minute yeah we would have loved to have seen them at peak perfection oh yeah
23:19so debbie tell us why do you think you should win super garden my garden is very appealing to a
23:27wide variety of people i think it's a work of art it's like a painting and i think to show people
23:33that you can do so much in a small space that you can be sustainable you can encourage wildlife and
23:39biodiversity in your own little garden yeah i'm just so proud of it and so you should be very well done
23:46thanks thanks thanks debbie take care lots of positives but there are issues i am in love with
23:57this garden i would say like we never expected that we are going to get everything that we
24:01wanted i would say like a debbie nailed it will debbie's be happy wildlife garden take her to bloom
24:09or will it be eileen sung's new beginnings design jorge aragon's falter fiesta design or will it be
24:17next week's designer chris walsh from the garden county of wicklow the main feature is
