00:00:00Mission Control, this is Conestoga transmission check on frequency 6596.
00:00:07We read you loud and clear, Conestoga.
00:00:11Beautiful liftoff, Conestoga. Look in your rearview mirror and say goodbye to Mars.
00:00:15Roger, Mission Control. Looks like smooth sailing from here on in.
00:00:30One.
00:00:40One.
00:00:45One.
00:00:51Two.
00:01:56Conestoga, do you read me? Come in, Conestoga.
00:01:59Conestoga, do you read?
00:02:01It is now nine weeks since the space mission under the command of Captain Neil Braddock lifted off the surface of Mars to begin the journey back to Earth.
00:02:11Nine long weeks in which inexplicably there has been no contact with mission control from the nine international scientists and astronauts who undertook this unprecedented and dangerous journey a scant five months ago.
00:02:23This lack of communication from those aboard remains a mystery.
00:02:26And Dr. Andrew McAllister, the director of the mission here in the United States, provides no answers and seems to have no idea as to what has happened.
00:02:35He must truly be the first person in history to have lost a spaceship.
00:02:38As of last night, however, observers at Palomar have isolated a moving object which may or may not be the space lab.
00:02:46If it is, then Conestoga would only be three days away from Earth and possibly re-entry if, and these are big ifs, if the object is indeed the Conestoga.
00:02:55If the craft has not been disabled in some way, and if their two-week encampment upon Martian soil has not led to some physical or mental debility that would preclude the space traveler's safe return to Earth.
00:03:07Whether or not this is the spaceship, the mission is clearly in jeopardy.
00:03:12This is Ted Johns, News 107.
00:03:15And now, back to our scheduled music program.

00:05:15Excuse me, Captain.
00:05:16I was waiting to speak with you privately.
00:05:18While going through my personal papers?
00:05:20Captain, I am a plain man, so...
00:05:21I will speak plainly.
00:05:22Neither Olga Denarenka nor I...

00:06:17Not to my satisfaction, I tell you frankly, Captain, if I could have mustered the support, I would have assumed command of this mission many weeks ago.
00:06:25You do as your government tells you. That's the way you operate. You don't do anything on your own.
00:06:30Don't misjudge me, Captain.
00:06:32And don't misjudge me. As long as we're aboard this ship, I'm judge, jury, and executioner.
00:06:36I'll consider any attempt to subvert this mission an act of mutiny. Do I make myself clear?
00:06:43Get out of here.
00:06:47Who's been advised?
00:06:59The President, the Secretary, and Rostov, of course.
00:07:02We'll be all over town at breakfast and we haven't had a chance to debrief.
00:07:06Can't be helped.
00:07:07Well, the hell with it.
00:07:08Still alive.
00:07:09Uh, can I confirm that kind of study that we will, uh, recalculate?
00:07:21Neil!
00:07:21Andy, you're up early.
00:07:23What the hell happened up there?
00:07:24We got swamped by a meteor shower two days after Mars' liftoff.
00:07:27Wanked other communications and we're slightly off trajectory.
00:07:30It's nothing we can't have.
00:07:32I'm so goddamn casual about it.
00:07:34Well, you know, Andy, Grace under pressure.
00:07:35Is everybody okay?
00:07:36Just fine.
00:07:37Major Steiner and Pam Cougar on EVA boosting up our reception.
00:07:40Now, what about your fuel?
00:07:42Why don't you ask our navigate?
00:07:44David?
00:07:46Thanks.
00:07:47Morning, Doctor.
00:07:48It, uh, it is morning down there, isn't it?
00:07:50It sure is, and it's good to see you.
00:07:52Now, our computers tell us your fuel situation could be better.
00:07:55Tell your computers we're okay.
00:07:57I'll be glad to hear that.
00:07:58What's wonderful news, Doctor?
00:08:00Communication is last.
00:08:02You ought to be congratulated.
00:08:03I'm afraid I had nothing to do with that.
00:08:05Well, there's nothing wrong with the ship.
00:08:07No, we're running tests now, apparently not.
00:08:09They're all well.
00:08:11Yep.
00:08:11It will make my government very happy.
00:08:14Particularly, Commissar Denarenko,
00:08:16who, as you know, was justifiably worried about his wife's safety.
00:08:20I would like to speak with Colonel Alcinoff.
00:08:24In time.
00:08:25Oh, for nine weeks, my people have been worried about their countrymen.
00:08:28Surely you can spare them here for moments.
00:08:31Captain Braddock.
00:08:32I'll get him, sir.
00:08:34Captain Braddock, I'm relieved that you are safe and well.
00:08:37Thank you, sir.
00:08:38Neil, in case you haven't already been briefed,
00:08:40several weeks ago, Russian Premier Sivarnich was deposed,
00:08:45and his successor, Mangold, was hugging to serve on the Politbu.
00:08:48Yes, we've been briefed, and Mrs. Denarenko to notify me.
00:08:51Colonel.
00:08:53Mr. Rostov, English.
00:08:56You know the rules.
00:08:57Oh, forgive me.
00:08:59Girl, Rostov, it's good to hear your voice.
00:09:01I trust you are well.
00:09:02Yes, I'm fine, as is Olga Denarenko.
00:09:05She is delighted by the news of her husband's appointment.
00:09:08And the mission, is it satisfactory?
00:09:12What I have to say should wait until my return to Earth.
00:09:16At that time, I will provide you with a detailed report on our activities.
00:09:20I see.
00:09:22Well, I look forward to it with great interest.
00:09:28Our friendly KGB bastard is playing his usual games.
00:09:32You mean unlike our friendly CIA bastard?
00:09:34What are you trying to do, blow my cover?
00:09:37Christ, let's kill Brian.
00:09:38Now, you tighten security.
00:09:39Great news about Conestoga, Andy.
00:09:46What was the problem?
00:09:47It was technical.
00:09:48You'll be filled in.
00:09:49Dinah, would you put me through to the president, please?
00:09:51Yes, sir.
00:09:51Look, Andy, we've got to get some coverage out to the country.
00:09:55How about setting up an interview right away with a feed to the networks?
00:09:58Can't do that.
00:09:59Maybe tomorrow.
00:10:00Look, if we wait, people will start asking questions.
00:10:03Only if you put the idea in their mind.
00:10:05Now, look, Kilbride.
00:10:05I still got scientists up there, and right now it's all they can do to hold this mission together.
00:10:11Now, I said tomorrow, and that's maybe tomorrow.
00:10:18Good morning, Mr. Vice President.
00:10:20Wonderful news, Andy.
00:10:22We're told everyone's just fine.
00:10:24Yes, sir.
00:10:24Well, I know how hard you work putting this mission together.
00:10:27Chief and I are delighted the crisis is over.
00:10:30We may still have a problem.
00:10:32Oh?
00:10:33Yeah, there's something going on up there.
00:10:35Now, I may be paranoid, and I may just be reading between the lines, but it seems to
00:10:39me maybe the Russians are trying to throw a curve or two at us.
00:10:42Specifics?
00:10:43Nothing yet, sir.
00:10:45Maybe just negative propaganda.
00:10:47I guess we'll have to handle it if it comes up.
00:10:49Oh, and my other problem, sir, the media.
00:10:52It seems they want access to the space lab, some sort of network coverage.
00:10:56Well, indulge them, Andy.
00:10:58Let them have their broadcast.
00:11:00Meanwhile, I'll be flying up this afternoon.
00:11:02It is an election year, and the chief wants us to hog a little of your glory.
00:11:07You understand?
00:11:08I do, sir, and you hog all you like.
00:11:10You're entitled.
00:11:11Oh, and as for the Russians, screw them.
00:11:14Did I say that?
00:11:16Bye, Andy.
00:11:16You found something?
00:11:40Take a look.
00:11:41I don't see anything.
00:11:49What is it?
00:11:49Looks to me like good old Canadian dirt.
00:11:51Kind of finding my own backyard.
00:11:54We travel 150 million miles to the Trivium Carantis, and what do we find?
00:11:58A rock garden.
00:12:00The whole damn mission's been a waste of time.
00:12:04Oh?
00:12:04I mean, professionally.
00:12:09Personally, it's been interesting.
00:12:15Problem?
00:12:16No.
00:12:18It's just that we land in a few days.
00:12:21It will be a matter of an adjustment.
00:12:24You do have a wife.
00:12:26Dominica...
00:12:27No, it's all right.
00:12:29We both know what we were doing, and nothing is ever permanent, is it?
00:12:34I suppose not.
00:12:36One thing, though.
00:12:38Yes?
00:12:39Like you said, we still have a few days.
00:12:53Excuse me, was I interrupting something?
00:12:54If we said yes, would you leave?
00:12:56I simply wanted both of you to learn that we have successfully corrected course.
00:13:00We've heard.
00:13:02So, the mission is almost over.
00:13:06Sad, in a way.
00:13:08Now that we are almost home, I will no longer have you to look at each morning.
00:13:11I doubt that will be a significant tragedy in your life, Major.
00:13:15It will be tragic for some.
00:13:17Partings can be difficult.
00:13:19Well, I shall leave you to your work.
00:13:30How can you two spend so much time in here?
00:13:32So many dangerous chemicals, most depressing.
00:13:35You've finished.
00:13:36Patience, my friend.
00:13:37Another few days, and you and I will be happily rid of one another.
00:13:41Ciao.
00:13:41Ciao.
00:13:41Ciao.
00:13:42Then, Dr. Verdue, everyone aboard seems to be in good health.
00:13:54Oh, yes.
00:13:55Except for what you Americans call the cabin fever.
00:13:59Crowded together for five months.
00:14:01It is a situation in which relationships can be sorely tested.
00:14:05And have they been?
00:14:06I was merely using a figure of speech.
00:14:08We've been all getting along quite well.
00:14:11Why don't you go home and get some sleep?
00:14:12What, ruin my health?
00:14:13My body wouldn't be able to stand it.
00:14:15One more medical question, Doctor.
00:14:16Before the mission began, there was the fear that all of you might be in danger of contacting
00:14:21some sort of space disease.
00:14:23I wouldn't concern myself with Martian plague.
00:14:27In any event, we will be undergoing extensive physical examinations in quarantine before mingling
00:14:32among you.
00:14:33How's Jill, by the way?
00:14:34Shouldn't you be a grandfather by now?
00:14:36She's like this mission.
00:14:37I have a confession, Mr. Kilbride.
00:14:40One amongst us has been negligent.
00:14:42I'm embarrassed to tell you it's me.
00:14:44The food here is remarkably good.
00:14:46Got a problem?
00:14:47What?
00:14:48Braddock wants to talk to you on the offline scramble frequency.
00:14:51What the hell is it?
00:14:52That system's only to be used in case of emergency.
00:14:54Or when Braddock's got something to say, he doesn't want the world to hear.
00:15:00Neil?
00:15:01Andy, you're coming in loud and clear.
00:15:03What's the problem?
00:15:04Well, the Russians, we may have a PR disaster on our hands.
00:15:08I think that Olga Denarenko and Colonel Kalsinov are going to denounce the mission.
00:15:11What do you mean, denounce Neil?
00:15:13He's got some sort of laundry list, charges that say I screwed up.
00:15:16He's fixated on the shortfall of fuel for re-entry.
00:15:18Claims I used more than I needed on the Mars liftoff.
00:15:21Well, did you?
00:15:22Is there any truth to it?
00:15:23Some.
00:15:24Look, Andy, nobody calls him right all the time.
00:15:27I've made mistakes, but I've done a good job up here.
00:15:29Who's on your side?
00:15:30Six to two split.
00:15:31Us against the Russians.
00:15:32Who's not voting?
00:15:34Kurt Steiner.
00:15:35He despises us all equally.
00:15:36He's right in the middle.
00:15:38You better keep us posted.
00:15:39Check.
00:15:40Talk to you soon.
00:15:41Out.
00:15:55Come in.
00:15:56Do I shock you?
00:16:08Somewhat.
00:16:10Really?
00:16:11And I thought you had such a good memory.
00:16:14I'll come back some other time.
00:16:18Neil, if my body now offends you, I'll cover it.
00:16:22Is that better?
00:16:32I was hoping we could talk.
00:16:33Of course you were.
00:16:35You've spoken with Kalzinov, and now you want me to speak to him.
00:16:40Or am I mistaken?
00:16:42Look, if he goes public with these complaints, he'll blow the image of the entire mission.
00:16:45The people want heroes.
00:16:49Let's give them a success story, even if it is an illusion.
00:16:51We can generate enough from it.
00:16:52Oh, stop it.
00:16:53You never had much of a sense of irony, Neil.
00:17:01But it should occur, even to you, that you are the last person I would help.
00:17:07Particularly since you ignored me when I needed you.
00:17:10Dammit, Olway, you're married.
00:17:12A fact that doesn't seem to have discouraged the others.
00:17:15That is, until my husband was elevated to the Politburo.
00:17:23You're all so afraid.
00:17:25Regardless of what you may think of me, this mission is more important.
00:17:28It's not this mission that concerns you.
00:17:30It's your career.
00:17:32That's all that's ever been important to you in your life, even in the beginning.
00:17:36Now, if you'll please leave me alone, I'd like to remove this rope, and I'm sure it will embarrass you.
00:18:05Hello.
00:18:07Are you sleeping in?
00:18:08Hello, Grace.
00:18:09Hey, look, I hope I didn't wake you.
00:18:12Well, yeah, you woke me.
00:18:14I just got in bed, too.
00:18:16Well, what is it?
00:18:17A boy or a girl?
00:18:18Nothing's happened.
00:18:21You mean to say you called me at 5.30 in the morning to tell me nothing happened?
00:18:25Well, I needed somebody to talk to you.
00:18:26I see, Grace.
00:18:28Are you upset?
00:18:29Yeah, I'm a little mad.
00:18:31How are you?
00:18:32Well, I'm a little tired.
00:18:34Well, I'm tired.
00:18:37I'm tired.
00:18:38Now, look, you tell Jill if she keeps this up, you're coming home, and she'll have to have that baby all by herself.
00:18:44You understand me?
00:18:46Grace?
00:18:47Hello, Grace.
00:18:49Hello.
00:18:49We have disconnected this call under a priority one condition.
00:18:52Go ahead, please.
00:18:54Sorry to cut in, Doctor.
00:18:55We've got a class A emergency down here.
00:18:57Well, what the hell is so important?
00:18:58They couldn't wait a minute.
00:19:00Can't discuss it on the phone.
00:19:01We need you down here five minutes ago.
00:19:03Doctor, can you tell us what's happening?
00:19:07Oh, you know as much about it as I do.
00:19:09We had an interview.
00:19:10A two-way interview with Space Live scheduled for 8 a.m.
00:19:12Suddenly, they pulled the plug.
00:19:13No reason given.
00:19:14Now the building's off limits.
00:19:17Andy!
00:19:17What the hell happened?
00:19:19Did we lose them again?
00:19:21No.
00:19:21We still got them.
00:19:22Most of them.
00:19:23What?
00:19:24Olga Denarenko's dead.
00:19:25What are you talking about, dead?
00:19:26Dead how?
00:19:27Of what dead?
00:19:28For Christ's sake, people her age don't just die.
00:19:31I know.
00:19:34Oh, for Christ's sake.
00:19:35Braddock and Dr. Berdew are standing by to talk.
00:19:37Also, I called our medical officer.
00:19:39She's waiting for you.
00:19:40Dr. Callister.
00:19:41Good morning, Margaret.
00:19:41Sit down, please.
00:19:42Good morning, Margaret.
00:19:42Good morning, Margaret.
00:19:42Good morning, Margaret.
00:19:42Good morning, Margaret.
00:19:42Good morning, Margaret.
00:19:42Good morning, Margaret.
00:19:42Good morning, Margaret.
00:19:43Neil, what the hell's going on up there?
00:19:52We're as confused as you are, Andy, but Olga is dead.
00:19:55The medical Miss Belli found her in a cabin about two hours ago.
00:19:58Dr. Berdew thinks she's been dead.
00:19:59How long?
00:20:00Possibly an hour or so before her body was discovered no more.
00:20:04I can tell you how or why, Dr. McAllister.
00:20:07It could have been anything.
00:20:08Stroke, heart attack, blood clot, aneurysm.
00:20:11We won't know until we can perform an autopsy.
00:20:14Wait a minute.
00:20:15You're asking us to bring her back down to earth without knowing the cause of death?
00:20:19I understand, but we have no choice.
00:20:21Perhaps we do.
00:20:22What'd you say?
00:20:23I said perhaps we do have a choice.
00:20:26Can you see me?
00:20:27It's Dr. Margaret Lee.
00:20:28Yes, doctor.
00:20:29Would it be possible to put Mrs. Denarenko's body in the pod you use for physical examinations
00:20:33and hook her up to the sensors and x-ray scanner here at Ground Control?
00:20:37It's possible.
00:20:38I don't know what you'd get.
00:20:39A complete skeletal x-ray, chemical analysis of the blood, urine and other body fluids.
00:20:45May I remind you, doctor, this system was developed for use on living organisms.
00:20:49I didn't say it would be perfect, but it might give us something.
00:20:52Well, I suppose it's worth a try.
00:20:55An autopsy a half million miles into space.
00:20:58A novel approach, Dr. Lee.
00:21:00We'll get back to you later, Andy.
00:21:01Right.
00:21:02The procedure is degrading.
00:21:17Perhaps.
00:21:18That mission control won't clear us to land until they've isolated the cause of Orca's death.
00:21:21And if they cannot do so?
00:21:25Let's not even consider that a possibility.
00:21:26I'll let you know when we have something definitive.
00:21:39I don't think I'll be much help.
00:21:41Of course you will.
00:21:43No.
00:21:44You were right about one thing, though.
00:21:46I would have made a terrible doctor.
00:21:49Did I tell you that?
00:21:52University of Paris.
00:21:53Lecture Hall B.
00:21:55I believe your quote was,
00:21:57Miss Cooper, you are a brilliant student,
00:21:59embarking on a career for which you are emotionally unsuited.
00:22:02I don't recall.
00:22:04Your memory is remarkable.
00:22:06It's not an easy thing to forget.
00:22:08When you're 22 and currently dismissed by a teacher for whom you have a great deal of, um...
00:22:15Perfection.
00:22:19This isn't a very suitable conversation.
00:22:22I mean, under the circumstances.
00:22:24No.
00:22:25Well, then.
00:22:26Shall we get to it?
00:22:28I hope I remember enough of my pre-medical education to be of some help.
00:22:32I'm sure you will.
00:22:33I'm sure you will.
00:22:38Would you like me to try?
00:23:00Oh, yes, please.
00:23:01My fingers are a little arthritic.
00:23:08She's hooked up.
00:23:18Let's see what we've got.
00:23:22No, goddammit.
00:23:23I said no pictures and no interview.
00:23:25If we have a statement to make,
00:23:27when we have a statement to make, we'll make it.
00:23:30Andy, we're springing a few weeks here.
00:23:32Speculation in Paris.
00:23:33The French president's called the White House looking for confirmation.
00:23:36What is it, Dinah?
00:23:39Excuse me, but Senator Carlisle's on line one,
00:23:42and Alexander Rostov's waiting to see you.
00:23:45Well, stall the senator and send in Mr. Rostov.
00:23:52Andrew, my friend.
00:23:54Why was I not informed of Olga Danarenka's death?
00:23:58Where'd you hear that?
00:24:00Well, perhaps I've been misled.
00:24:01No, Alex, I wish you had.
00:24:04And the cause of death?
00:24:05Right now, it's indeterminate.
00:24:08Andrew, forgive me,
00:24:10but I have also learned that you are conducting, what,
00:24:14an autopsy through space.
00:24:17Really, can such a thing have merit?
00:24:20We hope so.
00:24:21I mean, if there is some strange virus from outer space
00:24:24aboard that spacecraft,
00:24:26and I hope to God there isn't,
00:24:27well, maybe we can identify it.
00:24:28Well, of course, of course.
00:24:31Personally, I find the notion of such an examination distasteful.
00:24:35Officially, I must register my protest,
00:24:37but since you are going ahead,
00:24:39I trust you will give me a full and complete report of your findings.
00:24:43Of course.
00:24:44Yes, Dinah?
00:24:48Dr. Lee is here, sir.
00:24:51Ask her to wait a minute, will you, please?
00:24:53Surely not on my account.
00:24:54If Dr. Lee has the results,
00:24:56we are all vitally interested to learn what they are.
00:25:00Dinah, ask her to come in, please.
00:25:05Dr. Lee, you know Mr. Rostov,
00:25:07Soviet liaison officer?
00:25:08Yes, we've met.
00:25:11I'm charmed, as always,
00:25:13and most anxious to learn the results of your post-mortem tests.
00:25:16I'm sorry they were inconclusive.
00:25:19There's every indication Ogdenarenko died of a massive brain hemorrhage,
00:25:22but we won't be able to confirm those results
00:25:24until the bodies return to Earth.
00:25:26And no hint of any strange intergalactic viruses.
00:25:31Well, then at least the mission is not in jeopardy.
00:25:33I'm looking forward to a complete report of your findings.
00:25:36At the moment, Kamisar Denarenko knows nothing of this tragedy.
00:25:41He and his young wife were.
00:25:43They were very much in love.
00:25:50Yes?
00:25:50Sir, it's Harry Devlin,
00:25:52the vice president's chief assistant on the line.
00:25:57Hello, Harry.
00:25:59What can I do for you?
00:26:00Okay, doctor, you can forget what I said in front of Rostov.
00:26:08What?
00:26:09Here's what really killed Ogdenarenko.
00:26:13I don't want to read this.
00:26:14Can you tell me in three sentences or less?
00:26:17One, there was a heavy concentration of barbiturates in her system.
00:26:20Not enough to kill her, but certainly enough to put her to sleep.
00:26:22Jesus Christ.
00:26:24Two, the most probable cause of death is asphyxiation.
00:26:27Wait a minute.
00:26:29You're trying to tell me she was murdered.
00:26:31It's highly probable.
00:26:32Jesus Christ.
00:26:34I'm afraid, sir, that is not the worst of it.
00:26:36What?
00:26:37Pregnant?
00:26:38The woman was pregnant?
00:26:40Yes, sir.
00:26:41Two months into term.
00:26:42You sure about this, young lady?
00:26:43Yes, sir.
00:26:45Well, it's a mess, isn't it?
00:26:47Five months in space, two months pregnant.
00:26:50You don't know for sure how she died?
00:26:52Someone either strangled or smothered her.
00:26:54Sir, right now, our immediate problem is we can't keep her death secret forever.
00:27:02What do you suggest?
00:27:03Announce it.
00:27:04Cause is unknown.
00:27:07No matter what we say, the news people are going to go crazy, but maybe we can reduce speculation.
00:27:13All right.
00:27:14But nothing about the pregnancy.
00:27:15Not till I confer with the president.
00:27:18Right, sir.
00:27:18As soon as we have a murderer aboard the Spaceland.
00:27:24Forgetting everything else, the political ramifications are appalling.
00:27:29Andy, I'm damned if I have any advice, but handle it.
00:27:32No, no, no, no, no.
00:27:41Your children.
00:27:45I remember that.
00:27:47I'm afraid to be the list.
00:27:52An urgent call from the criminal.
00:27:55What other kind is there?
00:27:56Please.
00:27:57This is Georgi Denerenko?
00:28:08Or Pyotr?
00:28:10Pyotr, my friend, what is this urgent news that drags me away from my guests?
00:28:20Pyotr, there must be some mistake.
00:28:22Pyotr, there must be some mistake.
00:28:52Contact mission control.
00:28:56I must speak with Alexander Rostov, United.
00:29:12Are you all right?
00:29:18I'll be all right.
00:29:19It's nothing.
00:29:20Nothing?
00:29:22Sit down.
00:29:22I want to take a look at you.
00:29:24I have to re-examine Olga.
00:29:25Why?
00:29:26Mission control has evaluated the test results.
00:29:28They've asked for a visual scan of the body.
00:29:30Let's sit.
00:29:32Look up into the light.
00:29:34No.
00:29:36You needn't look.
00:29:38I'll tell you what's wrong.
00:29:40It's a subcutaneous growth.
00:29:43Possibly a tumor.
00:29:45It can't be a tumor.
00:29:46It can't be a tumor.
00:29:48They'd have never let you come on this mission.
00:29:50I suspected it only a few weeks before we launched.
00:29:54I was able to falsify my final x-rays.
00:29:56It's probably benign.
00:29:58It's probably benign.
00:30:00In any case, I'm certain it's operable and it will be attended to as soon as we return to Earth.
00:30:09Philippe.
00:30:09Meanwhile, I have an examination to perform and I will be most obliged for your help.
00:30:15Is there anything specific they want us to look for?
00:30:21Evidence of strangulation.
00:30:31Mrs. Tremaine, have you been informed of the death of Olga Denarenko?
00:30:33Yes, I heard it on the news.
00:30:34Excuse me, Mrs. Tremaine.
00:30:35Do you feel that your husband David is in any person?
00:30:37No, why should he be?
00:30:38We've heard reports that there may be a death of others on board the spacecraft.
00:30:41I haven't heard that.
00:30:42Would you get out of my way, please?
00:30:43Would you get out of my way, please?
00:30:46If David were here now, what would you say to him?
00:30:49I have no further comment.
00:30:51You see, our first-hand knowledge of the Martian surface is almost nil.
00:30:55And because we were out of contact with the returning space lab for so many weeks,
00:30:59we haven't yet had a chance to get a full rundown on the discoveries that may have been made.
00:31:03In other words, you're suggesting that the Martian surface could be highly radioactive,
00:31:07in which case all members of the space lab team may have been affected.
00:31:10No, I'm suggesting nothing.
00:31:12I'm merely proposing a possible hypothesis to explain the Russian woman's untimely death.
00:31:18But the possibility remains that the Martian surface is radioactive,
00:31:21or that the crew has been exposed to some kind of virus that might thrive in the Martian atmosphere or in outer space.
00:31:27Well, every possibility exists, Tom, but it could be dangerous to jump to conclusions before...
00:31:32Who is it?
00:31:34Irene, it's Eleanor Sterling.
00:31:36Oh, come on in.
00:31:38Oh, I see we finally got rid of the press.
00:31:39I heard about it, coming in from the airport.
00:31:42Oh, my God, Irene, that's awful.
00:31:43We don't know enough. We don't have any information.
00:31:45But how did Olga die?
00:31:47They're saying terrible things on the radio.
00:31:49Diseases and radioactivity.
00:31:51They don't know what they're talking about. Come on, sit down.
00:31:54I had to leave the kids at home in Toronto with my mother.
00:31:59Oh, Irene, if anything happens to Guy, I just don't know what I'll do.
00:32:05Guy?
00:32:11Guy?
00:32:11Guy?
00:32:11Guy?
00:32:13What's the matter?
00:32:14Nothing.
00:32:16Oh, something's wrong.
00:32:17Look, I'm tired.
00:32:21In the excitement, I forgot to take my insulin shot.
00:32:25You're upset about Olga.
00:32:26Well, for Christ's sake, Dominica, she is dead.
00:32:31You could at least pretend some sympathy.
00:32:33I'm sorry.
00:32:34You know how I felt about her. I didn't hide it.
00:32:36You sure as hell didn't.
00:32:38What does that mean?
00:32:39I don't know.
00:32:41But you did seem to get an excessive amount of pleasure out of cutting her off from me.
00:32:45You didn't seem to object.
00:32:47If I recall, you were more than willing to replace her.
00:32:50I just don't like the feeling of being anyone's trophy.
00:32:53Yours or hers.
00:32:54Poor Guy.
00:32:57This once.
00:32:58Don't punish yourself.
00:33:01You didn't use her.
00:33:03She used you.
00:33:05Now listen, damn it.
00:33:07Guy?
00:33:11Sir, I've just got to go take my shot.
00:33:13Sir, I've just got to go take my shot.
00:33:13You will stop this immediately.
00:33:29We have orders from Mission Control.
00:33:31I do not take orders from them.
00:33:33And you will not desecrate this woman's body.
00:33:35No disrespect is intended.
00:33:37But this examination must be conducted.
00:33:39If you have a problem, I suggest you take it up with Captain Braddock.
00:33:42I am no longer interested in taking matters up with Captain Braddock.
00:33:46I warn both.
00:33:48Leave her alone.
00:33:52Bloody asshole.
00:33:53I think he had something to hide.
00:34:05Budweck, can I help you?
00:34:07Please, we're trying to work.
00:34:10Kurt, you were useful climbing in and out of Martian craters.
00:34:13But right now you're not needed.
00:34:15Understand?
00:34:16Oh.
00:34:18I do believe he is actually trying to intimidate me.
00:34:21Major Steiner, get off the deck.
00:34:23You are offended, comrade.
00:34:25And are we to be in a constant state of mourning until we land?
00:34:30You will show Olga Denarenka respect.
00:34:34Of course, Colonel.
00:34:35My apologies.
00:34:40And how has her death affected your morale?
00:34:42I feel at each sense of loss which I know is shared by the others.
00:34:46Speaking for myself, I can say only that Olga Denarenko was a great scientist and a great humanitarian.
00:34:51I shall miss her very much.
00:34:53Oh, jeez.
00:34:55How is the rest of the crew taking it?
00:35:02Andrew, I'm sorry to take you from the press conference.
00:35:04Commissar Denarenko has been informed of his wife's passing.
00:35:09Naturally, he is heart sick.
00:35:11Please, convey our sympathies to the commissar.
00:35:13My friend, may we speak frankly.
00:35:16My government is fearful that an international incident is quite possible here.
00:35:21They request that there be complete cooperation between us.
00:35:24Naturally, I assure them that I would be made privy to everything that transpires aboard the space lab.
00:35:30And there is something I should know?
00:35:34Yeah, there is.
00:35:36Andy.
00:35:38Olga Denarenko was murdered.
00:35:41Murdered?
00:35:43Doctor, do you know what you're saying?
00:35:45Believe me, it gives me no great pleasure.
00:35:48But how? Who?
00:35:51I don't know who.
00:35:52As for how, talk to Dr. Lee.
00:35:57We were fairly certain the cause of death was asphyxiation.
00:36:00Asphyxiation?
00:36:03It's quite a change from a brain hemorrhage.
00:36:06We asked Dr. Berdue to examine the body, and with the help of Miss Cooper, he discovered two things.
00:36:11First, faint traces of abrasion around the nose and mouth.
00:36:15And second, there were three minute white fibers found in her respiratory passages.
00:36:19It appears the killer sedated her, then used something to block her breathing passages.
00:36:23A pillow, a towel, a glove.
00:36:25We can't tell yet.
00:36:27The material seems animal-based.
00:36:29Maybe wool.
00:36:30It was meant to look like a natural death.
00:36:33If I got it, almost did.
00:36:34I see.
00:36:36I shall have to report this to my government.
00:36:39And in a matter of hours, the whole world will know.
00:36:41I regret any embarrassment that this may bring to your American commander.
00:36:46But we're not the only ones who are going to be embarrassed here, Ali.
00:36:51You see, at the time of her death, Olga Denarenko was two months pregnant.
00:36:55Well, it's that little bit of news filters out to the world, I'm sure.
00:36:58Commissar Denarenko will want to thank you personally for instigating his public humiliation.
00:37:04You're right, of course.
00:37:07This entire matter must be kept confidential.
00:37:12How may I help?
00:37:13We drove six miles so you could have a bowl of chili?
00:37:18No.
00:37:19We need to have a private conversation, Mitch.
00:37:22And so I can eat something edible.
00:37:24Anybody that calls that edible is in serious trouble.
00:37:28So talk.
00:37:29We've got a killer aboard that spacecraft.
00:37:32We've got to identify them before they touch down at Edwards.
00:37:35It'd be simpler to interrogate once they're in quarantine.
00:37:37Murder's capital crime, Mitch.
00:37:39This one happened in outer space.
00:37:41Now, you're a lawyer.
00:37:44So you tell me.
00:37:46Who has jurisdiction in this case?
00:37:48Maybe nobody.
00:37:51Space law is in its infancy.
00:37:53Exactly.
00:37:54We've got to know who we're talking, Bob, before any of us can make a move.
00:37:58Olga's lover.
00:37:58Maybe.
00:37:59Should we pick one of these guys up during training or on the flight?
00:38:02In other words, we need a history.
00:38:04And I don't mean the kind we already got in the file.
00:38:06Talking about a complete history, Mitch.
00:38:07Okay, we've got our own people in Moscow.
00:38:10I'll get started on it tonight.
00:38:12Question.
00:38:13How do we find out what's going on in the space lab?
00:38:16Radek, I've told him almost everything.
00:38:18Andy.
00:38:20I know he's your friend, but...
00:38:22There's nothing that says he can't be our guy.
00:38:26Yeah.
00:38:28I know.
00:38:29So, my friend, what brings us together at this grotesque hour of the morning?
00:38:46I presume you weren't followed.
00:38:48Not with you, I'm sure.
00:38:49Shall we get to the point?
00:39:01We need to know if there was ever a personal relationship between Andrei Kelsinov and Olga Benarenko.
00:39:08What you're asking is highly dangerous, Colonel Kelsinov. He's a hero to our people.
00:39:11And only last year he was highly suspect by the KGB.
00:39:14But as our most highly qualified cosmonautic, at heart, they keep him from the project.
00:39:18But even so, they were afraid he might defect.
00:39:22I understand certain precautions were taken to neutralize him had he betrayed his country.
00:39:27What sort of precautions?
00:39:29KGB is very resourceful.
00:39:32And yet today, Kelsinov is a hero.
00:39:34And Olga Benarenko is a martyr.
00:39:37I will do what I can.
00:39:48I thought I'd locked it.
00:40:14Really?
00:40:15That's a big secret.
00:40:16Not really trying to identify some Martian plague, are you?
00:40:19Please, Guy, I really am busy.
00:40:22Well, take a break.
00:40:23Braddock wants everyone on the command deck.
00:40:25I realize there's still the possibility of error.
00:40:28At least until we can perform a physical autopsy on Earth.
00:40:30But as of the moment, I have to operate on the theory that Olga was murdered.
00:40:34Murdered?
00:40:35That's insane.
00:40:37I wish it were.
00:40:37How?
00:40:39How?
00:40:40She was suffocated.
00:40:45How long have you known this?
00:40:47Only a few hours.
00:40:48Now, eight of us remain aboard the laboratory.
00:40:51Eight and only eight.
00:40:53Do I have to spell out the situation to you?
00:40:55I'll be in my cabin for the next hour.
00:40:57Anyone who has anything at all to say, please speak up.
00:41:01Oh, and if the person responsible would like to explain why, I'll listen to that, too.
00:41:08Are you all right?
00:41:35I'll be fine.
00:41:37Oh, really?
00:41:38He shouldn't have told them.
00:41:40Now, we will all be thinking, is it he?
00:41:42Is it she?
00:41:45Not an ideal situation, considering the teamwork we will need to get down safely.
00:41:50All I know is that it isn't you.
00:41:55And you know it isn't me.
00:41:58Agreed?
00:42:03Well, perhaps neither of us would answer that.
00:42:06Come on, then.
00:42:22Come on in.
00:42:23Come on in.
00:42:23Come on in.
00:42:24Come on in.
00:42:30Yes?
00:42:32I came because I'm sure you regard me as a likely suspect in Olga's death.
00:42:36Thought crossed my mind, particularly since you had such a strong reaction to the attempts to examine Olga's body.
00:42:42Not because I had any idea that murder was involved.
00:42:45Andre, Mission Control knows that Olga was pregnant.
00:42:48I wasn't responsible.
00:42:52No?
00:42:52Then who?
00:42:54She wouldn't tell me.
00:42:56Look, you and I have had our disagreements.
00:42:58Yes, but believe me in this.
00:43:00I didn't get her pregnant, and I didn't kill her.
00:43:04It's true that she confided in me.
00:43:06She was terrified.
00:43:07That's why you two have been so secretive the last two weeks.
00:43:09Yes.
00:43:10She wanted me to arrange a discreet abortion as soon as we return to the earth.
00:43:14For you Americans, it is easily obtained.
00:43:16Not so in the Soviet Union.
00:43:18Particularly if you're the wife of an important party official.
00:43:20If you'd helped her, you would have been taking a major risk.
00:43:23She didn't leave me much choice.
00:43:25She said if I didn't cooperate, she would name me as the father.
00:43:29As you perhaps know, Commissar Denarenko is a violent and jealous man.
00:43:34If he had learned the truth, he would have had both of us killed.
00:43:47Christ!
00:43:48Are you out of your mind?
00:43:50Someone might have seen you.
00:43:51No one saw me.
00:43:51Kurt, we agreed.
00:43:52I told you no one saw me.
00:43:54You're frightened.
00:43:57You're always so fearful.
00:43:59You're right, Kurt.
00:44:00I have a right to be.
00:44:01No one suspects.
00:44:02I'm always careful.
00:44:03Nothing has changed.
00:44:04Everything's changed.
00:44:06One of us on this ship killed Olga.
00:44:08That means we'll all be put under the microscope.
00:44:11He'll come out.
00:44:11Not unless we let it.
00:44:14The death was unfortunate.
00:44:17But do not ask me to feel pity.
00:44:20She married an old fool in the Kremlin to advance herself and then slept around with every man she could find.
00:44:24Believe me, I know.
00:44:25And do not tell me she did not come on to you.
00:44:26No.
00:44:27Then I didn't flirt with her the way you did.
00:44:29Well, but that is part of my masquerade.
00:44:36David, you must trust me.
00:44:40I have no intention of sharing our relationship as a world.
00:44:43I would hardly do personally or professionally to have my private life exposed if it remains secret by whatever means necessary.
00:44:50The expedition, led by Kurt Steiner, reached the summit shortly before 1 a.m.
00:45:02These films were taken by fellow climber Franz Dietrich.
00:45:05It was a record-breaking climb for the eight-man party.
00:45:08A record that was not...
00:45:09No, I don't want that released yet.
00:45:11Braddock's working.
00:45:12Oh, and in case that scarf looks familiar, yes, it's the same one he wore conquering the Matterhorn.
00:45:17Knitted by his mother, who died soon afterwards, he considered it a long charm.
00:45:21No, there's nothing on Pamela Cooper yet.
00:45:23We haven't heard from London.
00:45:24...more than luck that won Major Steiner's success.
00:45:27But who knows?
00:45:28Look, I'll keep you informed.
00:45:29Always considered one of the most eligible bachelors on the European ski circuit...
00:45:33He's not a good bastard, isn't he?
00:45:36Well, maybe he has a right to be.
00:45:39Dinah?
00:45:40Yes, sir?
00:45:41Are you still trying to get through to my wife?
00:45:43Yes, sir, but the circuits are overloaded.
00:45:46Well, keep trying, will you, honey? I'm getting to feel like a grandfather.
00:45:49Yes, sir.
00:45:52Frankly, you don't seem the least big grandfatherly to me.
00:45:55Oh, so now you're listening in on my private phone conversations.
00:45:58Private? We can hear you all the way down the hall.
00:46:01Believe it or not, I am not cut out to be a detective.
00:46:07You're one of only three people that know the facts.
00:46:09You have to keep it in the family.
00:46:11What do you got?
00:46:12A tidbit from one of your spooks in Rome.
00:46:14Rome? What? Something on Domenico Mestrelli?
00:46:16Uh-huh, vis-Ã -vis she and Oga Denarenko.
00:46:19Sorry, I happen to know for a fact that those two never meant before the start of this mission.
00:46:23Two years ago, Domenico was having an affair with an Italian professor.
00:46:27One week before he was to publish a breakthrough paper, the identical material appeared in a journal in Russia, under Oga's byline.
00:46:35Now, maybe it was coincidence, maybe not.
00:46:37Either way, the professor went off the deep end.
00:46:40Seven months ago, he committed suicide.
00:46:42Domenico was with him when he died.
00:46:44Oga was already confirmed for the mission before Domenico applied.
00:46:47Right. And Domenico cashed in every marker she had to be sure her government endorsed her application.
00:46:57Captain, I can operate a microscope, but I'm no expert.
00:47:00I think I've got that fiber now down to an animal base, but I can't be more specific.
00:47:05Okay, forget about the fiber for a moment.
00:47:06What I want to talk to you about is Oga.
00:47:12I need a woman's insight into her character, who she was, what she was.
00:47:15We weren't all that close.
00:47:17You were closer than Domenico.
00:47:19Yes.
00:47:20There was a coolness between them.
00:47:23It's funny, I remember one night in training, Domenico got a bit drunk.
00:47:26She said the strangest thing to me.
00:47:28She said there was someone on the mission who had stolen her life.
00:47:31She said before the trip was over, she'd prove it.
00:47:34I didn't ask you about Domenico.
00:47:35But I think she was referring to Oga.
00:47:38It's merely a guess.
00:47:42Could Oga ever hint at who might have got her pregnant?
00:47:44No, but...
00:47:46No, what?
00:47:48Well, I could make a guess.
00:47:49Go ahead.
00:47:52Well, she'd have picked someone safe.
00:47:53Certainly not Andrei.
00:47:55Ultimately, he'd have been more loyal to Mother Russia than to her.
00:47:59Kurt Stana, a braggart and a talk are much too risky.
00:48:03But you can eliminate Dr. Bardew as well.
00:48:05Because of his age?
00:48:07Because he is not the sort of man to become involved with someone like her.
00:48:11He has been happily and faithfully married for the past 29 years.
00:48:14So that leaves David and Guy Sterling.
00:48:19And of course you, Captain.
00:48:22I'm flattered.
00:48:25For several reasons, I'd say it was Guy.
00:48:28Married or not, he likes the ladies.
00:48:30For the first three weeks of training, he tried to move in on me.
00:48:33He went so far as to tell me he'd had a vasectomy.
00:48:36You're kidding.
00:48:38Not at all.
00:48:39I wonder if you used that line on Olga.
00:48:42Yeah, it's possible.
00:48:45Thank you, Pamela.
00:48:46You've been very helpful.
00:48:50Sir, this TV press conference later on.
00:48:53Must we?
00:48:53I mean, it seems so grotesque pretending to the world that everything's all right.
00:48:57We know bloody well one of us is a killer.
00:48:59It's necessary.
00:49:00We're under orders to pacify the media.
00:49:02Send her in, Diane.
00:49:26Dr. McAllister.
00:49:28Ah, Mrs. Tremaine.
00:49:29Oh, please, don't stand.
00:49:31I, uh, I hate to bother you, but I, uh...
00:49:36Please, have a seat.
00:49:38Yes, I will, thank you.
00:49:40I thought you'd be getting ready for the television cameras.
00:49:42Well, I still have a few minutes, so...
00:49:44Can I get you a cup of coffee?
00:49:46Uh, no, thank you.
00:49:49I, uh...
00:49:50I spent a few hours being, uh...
00:49:54interviewed by a man named Carlino.
00:49:58His questions were, uh...
00:50:00Very personal, they, uh...
00:50:02He was asking about my marriage and, uh...
00:50:06My sex life.
00:50:08I felt rather humiliated.
00:50:12I'm sorry.
00:50:12He was hinting that David may have had something to do with Olga Denarenko's death, uh...
00:50:19Some, some kind of love affair.
00:50:21Uh...
00:50:23I don't know anything about death.
00:50:28Uh...
00:50:28David has sent me this letter just...
00:50:33A few hours before the spacecraft lifted off from Mars.
00:50:36You will see that the idea that, uh...
00:50:45That David and this Russian woman may have, uh...
00:50:48Had something sexual, well, it...
00:50:50It does seem a little absurd.
00:50:55For the past year...
00:50:57David and I have not slept together...
00:51:01For the mere reason that he just...
00:51:03Wasn't interested.
00:51:06I...
00:51:07I blamed myself, but then I, uh...
00:51:10I received this.
00:51:13I suppose it's his way of making me feel less guilty.
00:51:18He...
00:51:18He does say near the, uh...
00:51:21Near the end that he would like a divorce.
00:51:25Something quiet and discreet to avoid being an embarrassment to either of us.
00:51:29I'm sorry.
00:51:33Well, these things happen, don't they, Doctor?
00:51:35Usually, however, to someone else.
00:51:40Doesn't identify as a new friend here.
00:51:43No, it, uh...
00:51:43It could be someone aboard the, uh...
00:51:46The spacecraft.
00:51:47The problems did seem to begin when he was in training.
00:51:52Doctor, I've shown you this letter for one reason.
00:51:55I'm still his wife, and I do intend to fight for him.
00:51:58I hope I've done the right thing.
00:52:06Isn't it funny?
00:52:08In a few minutes, David and I will have to pretend to be the all-American couple in front of millions of people.
00:52:13I'm not sure I can pull it off.
00:52:23Well, to tell you the truth, I've been thinking about turkey dinner.
00:52:27Cranberry sauce.
00:52:28Well, I'm sure I could arrange that.
00:52:30Of course, Mom will want to make the pumpkin pie.
00:52:33Right.
00:52:34That's great.
00:52:35Say hi to her for me when you're talking to her.
00:52:37And she can't wait to see you.
00:52:39Neither can the rest of the family.
00:52:41And I miss them all, too.
00:52:43David, excuse me.
00:52:44Do you think you've lost any weight?
00:52:46Well, I would say so.
00:52:48There's not much to snack on up here, even if you wanted to.
00:52:51David, you're obviously due for a vacation after lunch.
00:53:07Have you made any plans?
00:53:08Irene, I thought maybe we'd take a couple of weeks.
00:53:11Go to Vermont.
00:53:12You know that cabin by the lake?
00:53:13The one with the leaky boat?
00:53:14And the leaky bathtub?
00:53:16And the leaky sink?
00:53:17And the leaky roof.
00:53:19Right.
00:53:19It'd be nice to spend some time together.
00:53:21You know, just...
00:53:23Guys!
00:53:25Guys!
00:53:29Doctor!
00:53:31Well, Dr. Bordeaux, I need 10 cc's adrenaline.
00:53:36Clear the gallery!
00:53:38Can you hear me?
00:53:38Can you tell us what's happening?
00:53:39Cut this transmission.
00:53:42All right, do it.
00:53:43Do it now!
00:53:43What the hell's happening up there?
00:53:47Captain Braddock, you're going to have to leave now, Mr. Kilbride.
00:53:54I'll leave!
00:53:55What is it?
00:53:56Well, I'm not sure.
00:53:57I think perhaps poison, Captain.
00:54:00WREQ News presents the 6 o'clock reputation for the shooting.
00:54:09I've done that.
00:54:14All right, let's give it to you.
00:54:16Let's get it.
00:54:16Let's get it.
00:54:17WREQ News presents the 6 o'clock report.
00:54:30Now live from aerospace headquarters is correspondent Jeffrey Kilbride.
00:54:34A veil of secrecy now shrouds mission control.
00:54:38For nearly six hours there has been no news of Guy Sterling,
00:54:41the Canadian meteorologist who collapsed suddenly on Space Lab's command deck.
00:54:44A collapse witnessed briefly by hundreds of millions of shocked viewers.
00:54:48Is Sterling alive or dead? No one will say.
00:54:51And if he is ill or disabled, is there any connection to the death of Olga Denarenko two days ago?
00:54:57Suddenly what seemed like a fantasy from a science fiction movie has become a stark and ugly possibility.
00:55:02That somehow the crew of the Conestoga is being attacked by a deadly virus from outer space.
00:55:08Cyanide.
00:55:09Are you sure?
00:55:10Perdue's convinced Pam Cooper backs him up it was in the insulin.
00:55:14As soon as Guy injected himself, he never had a chance.
00:55:17Who could have gotten to his insulin supply cabin?
00:55:19Any of us.
00:55:20Look, Andy, my people know what's going on. Believe me, they're damn scared. I want them down now.
00:55:24We're not prepared for that.
00:55:25Well, get prepared. We have a lunatic loose up here.
00:55:28Kelsine's running a pre-check on the Delta 216 right now.
00:55:31No, you can't risk a premature separation. You don't have enough fuel.
00:55:34Whatever the risk, it's less than staying up here.
00:55:37We'll do what we can.
00:55:39Soon.
00:55:39Out.
00:55:41Dr. McAllister, I've got that information on the chlorosyandicalumite.
00:55:46File confirms it is highly toxic and causes almost instant death.
00:55:50Gel capsules, the type used by the Russians, come in various sizes depending on the body weight of the subject.
00:55:55The most typical dosage used by the fraud agents is 5 cc's, which will kill a man of average weight and size within 10 seconds.
00:56:02Then there's no doubt the man was poisoned.
00:56:03No, sir. No doubt. Computers indicate one of the vials had been tampered with and it did contain a lethal dose of CCA.
00:56:13That's a cyanide compound usually used by intelligence officers in the event of their capture.
00:56:18Like a suicide capsule.
00:56:20The Russians issue those things to select military people as a matter of course.
00:56:24Andy, we've got to bring him down.
00:56:26Yes, sir. That's Captain Braddock's intention.
00:56:28Good. Impress upon him the need for caution.
00:56:31He's to maintain the tightest security possible.
00:56:33I want the rest of those people back alive.
00:56:36Yes, sir.
00:56:38That poison is a favorite of the Russians.
00:56:41Both Andrei Kalsinov and Olga Denarenko were issued this stuff.
00:56:45It's a matter of course.
00:56:47To be used in the event of the attack from the Martians.
00:56:51Christ, I'm not even thinking straight.
00:56:54You're thinking better than you look.
00:56:56It must have been the 8-minute nap I took.
00:56:58By the way, have you been able to find out who David's boyfriend is?
00:57:04It's got to be Kurt Steiner.
00:57:07Though come to think of it, I never suspected him of being a homosexual.
00:57:10I don't think any of us did.
00:57:13Anyway, I don't see how it has any bearing.
00:57:15Well, I don't know whether it has either, but I'm, you know, I'm grasping.
00:57:20Look, the important thing is the safety of your crew, even if it means letting the killer go.
00:57:24No, that's not possible.
00:57:26Don't be too sure.
00:57:27Suppose we find out who it is.
00:57:30Who's going to prosecute him?
00:57:31Who has jurisdiction?
00:57:33Hell, the minute you touch down, the killer may be home free.
00:57:36That's obscene.
00:57:38I know.
00:57:39But I don't know what to do about it.
00:57:54You are absolutely sure of this?
00:58:01Yes, sir.
00:58:02The cause of her death has been confirmed without question.
00:58:05My dear.
00:58:06Yes, sir.
00:58:09There is more, isn't there?
00:58:11We are not sure, sir.
00:58:12Now tell me.
00:58:13There is a report.
00:58:15There is a speculation.
00:58:18Sir, the Americans believe your wife was two months pregnant at the time of her death.
00:58:24Naturally, the idea is preposterous.
00:58:27Certainly, the autopsy will disprove such an insulting suggestion.
00:58:31Now, even in death, she has dishonored me.
00:58:36The Delta 216 is scheduled to land in less than 10 hours.
00:58:40Yes, sir.
00:58:41Is it possible to contact Colonel Kalsinov without the knowledge of the others?
00:58:48Perhaps, sir.
00:58:48It would have to go through Alexander Rostov.
00:58:51Do it.
00:58:52Have Rostov make it clear to Colonel Kalsinov
00:58:56that I wish the Delta 216 diverted to a landing site within the Soviet Union.
00:59:02Sir, that is impossible.
00:59:03Make it possible.
00:59:05Do whatever you have to.
00:59:08But under no circumstances,
00:59:10my wife's body will be defiled by the Americans.
00:59:14Yes, sir.
00:59:14Control, I'd like confirmation on horizontal latitude reading 5896.34.
00:59:32That's a roger, David.
00:59:33Will you activate your Z-valve readouts?
00:59:35We may have a problem with compression in the forward jets.
00:59:37With luck and enough fuel, it'll be home time for breakfast.
00:59:42I hope so.
00:59:44Well, Mitch, eight hours to go.
00:59:47Count them.
00:59:49Andy, before you activate that thing, you better have a look at this.
00:59:53It's the secret Soviet file on Olga Denarenko.
01:00:01How'd you get this?
01:00:02Doesn't matter.
01:00:03Fifteen years ago, Olga was 19 and living in London.
01:00:07Her father was a minor bureaucrat in the Soviet's London embassy.
01:00:12About a dozen students from Oxford were invited to an embassy reception.
01:00:16One of those students was an American Rhodes scholar named Anil Braddock.
01:00:24She and Braddock began seeing one another.
01:00:27Tried to keep their meetings a secret.
01:00:32But the KGB was on her ass from day one.
01:00:36Apparently it had nothing to do with politics.
01:00:38Just sex.
01:00:41Anyway, her father was reassigned to Moscow and Olga went back with him.
01:00:44Braddock went back to the U.S.
01:00:46And as far as the Russians are aware,
01:00:48they didn't see each other again until the start of the Conestoga space mission.
01:00:55It's really great, Mitch.
01:00:58You and your CIA boys, you do a backgrounder on her and Captain Braddock
01:01:02and you come up with a silks.
01:01:04And look at this.
01:01:06She was a young girl.
01:01:07Her name was different.
01:01:08He wasn't attached to the military yet.
01:01:11Slipped through the cracks.
01:01:12Captain Braddock never did say he used to know her.
01:01:14I wonder why.
01:01:31Where's Steiner?
01:01:33Anyone seen him?
01:01:34Not for a while.
01:01:36Dominica.
01:01:36Let's see if he's in his cabin.
01:01:38Yes, sir.
01:01:38Get up here on the double.
01:02:00Cut.
01:02:00Cut.
01:02:01Cut.
01:02:02Cut.
01:02:03What is it? What happened?
01:02:16What is it? What happened?
01:02:19I'm lost. Come on.
01:02:27It's Lucky Scarf. He's going to plant it on Mars like a flag.
01:02:30Apparently he changed his mind.
01:02:33Let me see. See with what, Doctor?
01:02:35You're half blind. We all know it.
01:02:37Here. He's turning cold already.
01:02:40He's dead, Doctor. Even you can figure that out.
01:02:42All right, that's enough.
01:02:44Everyone, go to your cabin.
01:02:46Lock yourselves in until it's time to board the Delta 216.
01:02:48I'm still giving the orders here at Kelsenoff.
01:02:51Yes, and we've all seen the results of those orders.
01:02:53Three people dead already. Are you hoping for a fourth?
01:02:55We'll all be safer if we gather our personal belongings
01:02:57and wait together on the command deck until we depart.
01:02:59That way we'll all be able to keep each other in sight.
01:03:02I disagree.
01:03:03Disagree all you like, Colonel, but it's in order.
01:03:08I'll get my things, Captain.
01:03:11David.
01:03:12David.
01:03:13Now, will you please repeat to me
01:03:28the commissar's exact words?
01:03:37Let's see.
01:03:41Well, there is a way.
01:03:45It will be difficult, but
01:03:47I will try.
01:03:50How long has he been dead?
01:03:58Produce has about an hour.
01:04:01Can you reconstruct everybody's whereabouts
01:04:03at the time he was killed?
01:04:05What for?
01:04:06I know who killed him.
01:04:07It was Kelsenoff.
01:04:09Look, Andy.
01:04:11Steiner was a big man.
01:04:12Very strong.
01:04:13The women couldn't have done it,
01:04:13and Berdus infirmed.
01:04:14And as for David,
01:04:16I was able to confirm his relationship with Steiner.
01:04:20Could have had it fallen out.
01:04:22And there's still you, Captain.
01:04:24Who said that?
01:04:26Mitch?
01:04:27Captain.
01:04:28I've got a few questions I'd like to ask.
01:04:30Are you saying I killed Steiner?
01:04:32I'm not suggesting anything yet.
01:04:33I would like to know about you and Olga Denarenko.
01:04:38I don't understand the question.
01:04:39Come on, Captain.
01:04:40Fifteen years ago,
01:04:41London, a party at the Soviet embassy.
01:04:44Now, do you understand the question?
01:04:46If you've got a point to make, make it.
01:04:49I'm sorry, Donnie.
01:04:50You'll have to hold everything.
01:04:51We can't be disturbed just now.
01:04:52I'm sorry, sir.
01:04:53But the vice president and Mr. Rostoff are here.
01:04:56They must see you immediately.
01:04:57Uh-huh.
01:04:59Send him in.
01:05:01Drop it, Mitch.
01:05:03Andy, I'm sorry to break in at this hour,
01:05:06but we've got a problem.
01:05:07I guess you better be part of it, too, Mr. Carlino.
01:05:10Mr. Rostoff wants to speak directly to Colonel Kalsinoff.
01:05:13I've agreed.
01:05:16Captain Braddock?
01:05:17Yes, sir.
01:05:18Would you summon the colonel to your cabin, please?
01:05:22Yes, sir.
01:05:23Colonel Kalsinoff to the captain's cabin.
01:05:26Mr. Vice President,
01:05:28I'm sorry, sir.
01:05:29Right now we have another problem.
01:05:32Oh?
01:05:32By problem, you mean another death.
01:05:38Kurt Steiner was found strangled in his quarters less than 30 minutes ago.
01:05:43My God, Andy, you've got to get those people down.
01:05:46Mr. Vice President, Colonel Kalsinoff.
01:05:53Colonel, I'm here with Mr. Rostoff.
01:05:56He wishes to speak to you.
01:05:57In private, sir.
01:05:58Oh, no.
01:05:59Mr. Vice President, I must protest.
01:06:02Protest all you like, Mr. Rostoff.
01:06:04But considering what's going on up there,
01:06:05whatever you've got to say, we're all going to hear.
01:06:11As you wish.
01:06:14Colonel,
01:06:15we are obviously all concerned
01:06:17about this dangerous situation.
01:06:19Moscow has ordered me to ask you directly
01:06:24if you are satisfied with the leadership of Captain Pradik.
01:06:29The captain and I have disagreed often,
01:06:33but it would be unfair to hold him responsible
01:06:36for what's happening at the moment.
01:06:37Do you feel that you should assume command
01:06:40of the remainder of this mission?
01:06:43At this time,
01:06:43the Captain Pradik has the confidence of the others.
01:06:46That is not an answer, Colonel.
01:06:48It's the best I can give you, sir.
01:06:51Very well.
01:06:53I'm satisfied.
01:06:55Best wishes for a safe re-entering.
01:06:58Oh, and Colonel,
01:07:00Premier Savarnich
01:07:01sends warmest personal regards.
01:07:07I am grateful
01:07:09to the Premier.
01:07:13I realize that my request
01:07:15is somewhat unusual,
01:07:18but what Moscow proposes,
01:07:21well,
01:07:22we all have our orders.
01:07:27Talk to you later, Annie.
01:07:28Yes, sir.
01:07:31What the hell was all that about?
01:07:35Why would Rostov bring greetings
01:07:37from a deposed Premier?
01:07:38It doesn't make sense.
01:07:40Unless...
01:07:40Who is that?
01:08:05Go away!
01:08:14Yes, Mr. Vice President.
01:08:16I agree with Mr. Carlino.
01:08:17I think it's possible,
01:08:18even probable,
01:08:19that Rostov just gave Colonel Kalsinov
01:08:22some kind of pre-arranged secret order,
01:08:25possibly to try and take over this mission.
01:08:30Neil!
01:08:31My God, Neil!
01:08:32Neil!
01:08:32Neil!
01:08:32Neil!
01:08:35What the hell happened?
01:08:46We've got damage, sir.
01:08:47Quadrant B3.
01:08:48We're losing oxygen, electric...
01:08:49I can't maintain stabilization.
01:09:02What happened?
01:09:03I'm not sure.
01:09:08Councilor's dead.
01:09:09Someone blew up his cabin.
01:09:10You may feel alive.
01:09:10No!
01:09:11There's nothing left.
01:09:12I sealed off the corridor.
01:09:12There was nothing we could do.
01:09:13Doctor, I asked you.
01:09:14What happened?
01:09:15Bastard!
01:09:15Leave me alone.
01:09:16He can't see.
01:09:16I was trying to get into my cabin.
01:09:18Suddenly, there was an explosion.
01:09:19I was snuck to the ground.
01:09:20Captain, we lost trajectory.
01:09:22Dave says we're going to hit the atmosphere dead on,
01:09:25and he cannot arrest our course.
01:09:27Get a picture of sound on that thing right now.
01:09:38Sorry, so we've lost him.
01:09:39Keep trying.
01:09:39Doctor, they've got a massive malfunction.
01:09:41They're off trajectory.
01:09:44Let's go, David, into the Delta.
01:09:45Captain, what about the buddy?
01:09:46Not enough time.
01:09:47I said move it, David.
01:09:57Damn it, Mr. Jack.
01:09:59We're not getting any power.
01:09:59The electrical system's shorted out.
01:10:01We're not going to make it.
01:10:02Stay here.
01:10:02I'm going to have to blow it.
01:10:03It must be going for the Delta.
01:10:05Can you establish contact?
01:10:06No, sir.
01:10:06The Delta system won't receive until we've entered Earth's atmosphere.
01:10:09Look on your alternate frequencies to start sending.
01:10:11Yes, sir.
01:10:12Everyone back at the corner.
01:10:13Put the time on this.
01:10:14We've got three seconds.
01:10:17We've got enough fuel on this thing to make it from here.
01:10:34Sure as hell going to find out.
01:10:37Power activated.
01:10:41Check.
01:10:42Turbo's activated.
01:10:45Check.
01:10:45Separation.
01:10:48Separation confirmed.
01:10:50Ignition.
01:10:58Ignition.
01:11:01Ignition confirmed.
01:11:04Let's go.
01:11:10Sir, I've got a blip coming off the space lab.
01:11:13I think they've launched the Delta.
01:11:13Put the grid up on the screen.
01:11:15Yes, sir.
01:11:16Margo, give me a calculation.
01:11:17Yes, sir.
01:11:18They smell good, doctor.
01:11:19They're way off.
01:11:20Are they correct?
01:11:20It's possible.
01:11:22But they're running out of time.
01:11:26We're coming in shallow.
01:11:28We're going to bounce off.
01:11:30Wheels are four, six percent.
01:11:31We don't have enough for a second pass.
01:11:32Correcting forward attitude to six.
01:11:34Zero, eight, nine.
01:11:36Now.
01:11:36The red line is the Delta's course, sir.
01:11:43The green line is the correct trajectory for re-entry.
01:11:45If they can put the two together, they'll make it back.
01:11:4829 seconds to atmosphere.
01:11:5127, 26, 25, 24, 23, 22, 21, 20.
01:11:5919, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 7.
01:12:09Coming up to 10 seconds.
01:12:119, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
01:12:20Mark.
01:12:25What happened?
01:12:26They've lost radar contact in the ionization belt.
01:12:29Did they make it?
01:12:29We'll know in a minute.
01:12:36Delta, this is control.
01:12:36Please acknowledge.
01:12:39Delta, this is control.
01:12:40Do you read?
01:12:45Delta, this is control.
01:12:46Do you read?
01:12:53Delta, this is control.
01:12:54Do you read?
01:12:55Mission control, this is Delta.
01:13:02Only five of us, but we're coming home.
01:13:11Andy, you've got a mess in your hands, but at least they're coming in safe.
01:13:15Five of them, sir.
01:13:17Mitch, I want a plane ready to fly to Edwards in 30 minutes.
01:13:20Triple security.
01:13:22Nobody in or out.
01:13:22What is it, Andy?
01:13:23You know something, don't you?
01:13:24No, sir.
01:13:25Just guessing.
01:13:26What are your thoughts?
01:13:28Not yet, sir.
01:13:29Not just yet.
01:13:31Not just yet.
01:13:32Dr. McAllister, I'm Colonel Chet.
01:13:44Dr. McAllister, I'm Colonel Chet.
01:14:02We've been ordered to give you every cooperation.
01:14:03Where are they, Carl?
01:14:04It's a question in our main briefing room.
01:14:06It's just this way.
01:14:06Sir, the medical staff is concerned.
01:14:09May I suggest that they not be questioned until they've undergone a thorough physical examination?
01:14:13No, you may not.
01:14:14Well, welcome back, Neil.
01:14:22That was a close one.
01:14:23Yeah, they don't come any closer.
01:14:28How's Purdue?
01:14:28Loss of vision.
01:14:30You need surgery immediately.
01:14:36Doctor?
01:14:38Dr. McAllister.
01:14:39Yeah.
01:14:40How do you feel?
01:14:41Pain is minimal.
01:14:42Well, I suspect pressure on the optic nerve.
01:14:45Dr. McAllister, I'm sure you have questions, but couldn't they wait?
01:14:48Dr. Bordeaux should be examined immediately.
01:14:50We all need a chance to catch our bearings.
01:14:52Of course.
01:14:54I've already made arrangements for four of you to undergo medical debriefing.
01:14:58Four of us?
01:14:59What the hell is that supposed to mean?
01:15:03It means, David, that one of you is a murderer.
01:15:05You have no authority to place me under arrest, Colonel.
01:15:30Sorry, Captain.
01:15:31I'm just following orders.
01:15:32Whose orders?
01:15:34My orders.
01:15:35You have no jurisdiction on this base.
01:15:36You're a civilian.
01:15:37I do in this case, Neil.
01:15:39I'm here under direct orders from the highest level.
01:15:41Colonel, would you excuse us, please?
01:15:43If you need me, I'll be outside.
01:15:45Thanks.
01:15:46This is a hell of a greeting.
01:15:47But, Andy, you're sitting where I've been.
01:15:50I'm fresh out of brass bands.
01:15:52Brass bands.
01:15:53I expected just a little more than this.
01:15:55Oh, did you?
01:15:56I never murdered anybody.
01:15:57Well, maybe you've got another name for it.
01:15:59Oh, what is this?
01:16:00A kangaroo court?
01:16:01No.
01:16:01Well, it's just a quiet conversation between two old friends.
01:16:09Yeah, we're friends.
01:16:11I'm thinking about the things you didn't tell me.
01:16:14For example, you never mentioned you used to know Olga Denarenko.
01:16:18And all of a sudden, she turns up, pregnant and dead.
01:16:23You think I did it?
01:16:25Did you?
01:16:27No.
01:16:30Well, I'm listening.
01:16:31Look, Andy, I think I've got a pretty good idea what happened up there.
01:16:34Survival has a tendency to clear the mind.
01:16:36You're dancing around a murder charge.
01:16:42Court-martial at best.
01:16:43I can't make you any deals.
01:16:46All right.
01:16:47It's no secret that Olga's marriage was unhappy.
01:16:49Sex was never part of the package with the commissar.
01:16:53She went looking at other places for gratification.
01:16:56She went after me and I wasn't interested.
01:16:58You never had much of a sense of irony, Neil.
01:17:01But it should occur, even to you, that you are the last person I would help.
01:17:07Particularly since you ignored me when I needed you.
01:17:11Damn it, Olga, you're married.
01:17:12A fact that doesn't seem to have discouraged the others.
01:17:16But there was a fellow on that ship who was interested.
01:17:19Guy Sterling.
01:17:20For several reasons, I'd say it was Guy.
01:17:23Married or not, he likes the ladies.
01:17:26For the first three weeks of training, he tried to move in on me.
01:17:29Even insofar as to tell me he'd had a vasectomy.
01:17:32So Guy did have a relationship with Olga?
01:17:35Yes.
01:17:36I confirmed that through Dominica.
01:17:38Halfway through the mission, for reasons of her own,
01:17:40she took great delight in taking Guy away from Olga.
01:17:43But you did seem to get an excessive amount of pleasure out of cutting her off from me.
01:17:47You didn't seem to object.
01:17:48If I recall, you were more than willing to replace her.
01:17:52As far as Olga was concerned, Guy was interested and available.
01:17:55They had their affair and...
01:17:56She got pregnant.
01:17:57Exactly.
01:17:58Then he killed her.
01:17:59He didn't have to.
01:18:00Olga could never go public about her pregnancy.
01:18:02Her husband would have had her killed.
01:18:04Guy was perfectly safe.
01:18:05He knew eventually she'd have to have an abortion.
01:18:07She didn't leave me much choice.
01:18:09She said if I didn't cooperate, she would name me as the father.
01:18:13As you perhaps know,
01:18:14Commissar Dinerenko is a violent and jealous man.
01:18:17If he had learned the truth,
01:18:19he would have had both of us killed.
01:18:22Somebody killed her?
01:18:23Yes.
01:18:24The man I had the most to hide.
01:18:29Kurt Steiner.
01:18:31After Guy left Olga for Dominica,
01:18:33Olga was very insecure,
01:18:35and Steiner had been flirting with all the women
01:18:36to cover up the fact that he was gay.
01:18:38Sad in a way.
01:18:39And as of you are almost home,
01:18:41I will no longer have you to look at each morning.
01:18:43I doubt that will be a significant tragedy in your life, Nature.
01:18:47She married an old fool in the Kremlin to advance herself,
01:18:49and then slept around with every man she could find.
01:18:51Believe me, I know.
01:18:52And do not tell me she did not come on to you.
01:18:54No.
01:18:55Then I didn't flirt with her the way you did.
01:18:56Well, that is part of my masquerade.
01:18:59So you assume she went from Guy to Kurt.
01:19:02He told me what he told David, his lover.
01:19:04He would never allow himself to be found out
01:19:06when he couldn't or wouldn't perform in bed with Olga.
01:19:09She threatened to tell all.
01:19:10It would hardly do personally or professionally
01:19:12to have my private life exposed.
01:19:15It would remain secret by whatever means necessary.
01:19:18And Olga was suffocated.
01:19:20And the white fibers Pamela found were animal-based.
01:19:24It appears the killer sedated her,
01:19:26then used something to block her breathing passages.
01:19:28A pillow, a towel, a glove.
01:19:30We can't tell yet.
01:19:32The material seems animal-based.
01:19:34Maybe wool.
01:19:35Steiner's Lucky Scarf, of course.
01:19:37In case that scarf looks familiar,
01:19:40yes, it's the same one he wore conquering the Matterhorn.
01:19:44It's Lucky Scarf.
01:19:45He was going to leave that scarf on Mars,
01:19:47but he brought it back with him to the ship.
01:19:48He confessed to you.
01:19:51Why?
01:19:51Because he was an arrogant bastard,
01:19:53and he knew there was nothing I could do.
01:19:55You confirmed that.
01:19:56Look, the important thing is the safety of your crew,
01:19:59even if it means letting the killer go.
01:20:01That's not possible.
01:20:02Don't be too sure.
01:20:03Suppose we find out who it is.
01:20:05Who's going to prosecute him?
01:20:07Who has jurisdiction?
01:20:09Hell, the minute you touch down,
01:20:10the killer may be home free.
01:20:12That's obscene.
01:20:14I know.
01:20:15But I don't know what to do about it.
01:20:17I thought about it,
01:20:18and the more I thought about it,
01:20:19the more I realized that his government,
01:20:20not to mention the complications of space law,
01:20:22would protect him.
01:20:24Couldn't let that happen.
01:20:25So you murdered him?
01:20:27No.
01:20:28I'll tell you exactly what I told Kelsinov.
01:20:31As long as we're aboard this ship,
01:20:32I'm judge, jury, and executioner.
01:20:34I'll consider any attempt to subvert this mission
01:20:36an act of mutiny.
01:20:37Do I make myself clear?
01:20:39It wasn't murder.
01:20:40I weighed the situation,
01:20:42I judged him,
01:20:43and I executed him.
01:20:44It was either that,
01:20:45or he goes free.
01:20:46I had no choice.
01:20:48So,
01:20:49Steiner kills Olga,
01:20:51you execute Steiner,
01:20:53solves the mystery.
01:20:55Wait.
01:20:56Who killed Guy Sterling?
01:20:58Well, it's easy.
01:21:00Olga Denarenko.
01:21:02Olga was already Denarenko.
01:21:03Oh, I know.
01:21:05Sterling died because somebody put cyanide
01:21:07in one of his insulin vials.
01:21:09Olga Denarenko could have done that anytime.
01:21:12Two weeks before.
01:21:14He had to be silenced.
01:21:17See, there were only two people
01:21:18that knew about her pregnancy.
01:21:20Colonel Kelsinov and Sterling.
01:21:22A Russian poison.
01:21:25Kelsinov could have killed him.
01:21:26No.
01:21:29Guy didn't die instantly,
01:21:31which he would have done
01:21:32if he'd have been given a full male dose
01:21:33from Kelsinov's supply.
01:21:40David, you're obviously due
01:21:41for a vacation after the first.
01:21:43Have you made any plans?
01:21:45Irene, I thought maybe we'd take
01:21:46a couple of weeks.
01:21:47Um, go to Vermont.
01:21:48You know that...
01:21:49The reason he was able to leave his cabin
01:21:51and stagger to the command deck
01:21:52is because Olga fixed his insulin
01:21:54with her smaller dosage.
01:21:56It'd be nice to spend some time together.
01:21:58You know, just...
01:22:00Remember what Margaret Lee told me.
01:22:02I've got that information
01:22:03on the chlorosyandicalumite.
01:22:05File confirms it is highly toxic
01:22:07and causes almost instant death.
01:22:09Gel capsules, the type used by the Russians,
01:22:11come in various sizes
01:22:12depending on the body weight of the subject.
01:22:14The most typical dosage used
01:22:16by the foreign agents is five cc's,
01:22:18which will kill a man
01:22:19of average weight and size
01:22:20within ten seconds.
01:22:21Sterling may not have said anything,
01:22:24but, uh, Olga couldn't take that chance.
01:22:26He'd already lied to her once
01:22:27about his vasectomy.
01:22:29Which brings us to the death
01:22:31of Andrei Kalsinov.
01:22:32I mean, who would throw a bomb
01:22:33into his cabin?
01:22:34Or to the point why?
01:22:36Kalsinov's dead!
01:22:37Someone blew up his cabin!
01:22:37He may say...
01:22:38No!
01:22:38There's nothing left!
01:22:39I sealed off the corridor.
01:22:40There was nothing to do!
01:22:41Mitch thinks the bomb
01:22:42was already in the cabin.
01:22:44But Kalsinov himself
01:22:45brought it aboard,
01:22:46probably unknowingly.
01:22:47The old Russian regime,
01:22:49I mean, before Deneranko
01:22:50and his crowd took power,
01:22:51distrusted Colonel Kalsinov.
01:22:53They thought perhaps
01:22:54he might defect.
01:22:55Well, he was a national hero,
01:22:57a public figure.
01:22:59They couldn't do much.
01:23:00But they did hedge their bets.
01:23:02They needed a way
01:23:03to neutralize him
01:23:04in the event he did go sour
01:23:05or turned traitor.
01:23:07Even so,
01:23:08they were afraid
01:23:08he might defect.
01:23:09I understand certain
01:23:10precautions were taken
01:23:12to neutralize him
01:23:13had he betrayed his country.
01:23:14Well, sort of, though.
01:23:16Precautions.
01:23:16The KGB is very resourceful.
01:23:18So they planted a bomb.
01:23:20Which Kalsinov
01:23:21could unknowingly set off,
01:23:22given the right set
01:23:23of circumstances?
01:23:24But Kalsinov
01:23:25wasn't going to defect.
01:23:27Ah!
01:23:28But now the Russians
01:23:29have another use
01:23:29for their bomb.
01:23:31Now, think about this.
01:23:33Olga Deneranko
01:23:34is about to undergo
01:23:34an autopsy.
01:23:36The world is going to
01:23:37find out about her condition.
01:23:39Her husband,
01:23:40Commissar Deneranko,
01:23:41is going to be
01:23:42real embarrassed.
01:23:43Now, he's the kind of man
01:23:44who'll do anything
01:23:45to keep the world
01:23:46from finding out
01:23:46about the condition
01:23:47of his dead wife.
01:23:49Have Rostov make it clear
01:23:50to Colonel Kalsinov
01:23:51that I wish
01:23:52the Delta 216
01:23:54diverted to a landing site
01:23:55within the Soviet Union.
01:23:57Sir, that is impossible.
01:23:59Make it possible.
01:24:01Do whatever you have to.
01:24:03But under no circumstances
01:24:05my wife's body
01:24:07will be defiled
01:24:07by the Americans.
01:24:09But how could they
01:24:09control Kalsinov?
01:24:11Long distance,
01:24:12through Rostov.
01:24:14There is a way.
01:24:17It will be difficult,
01:24:19but I will try.
01:24:22See, Mitch thinks
01:24:23that Kalsinov
01:24:24was programmed to act
01:24:26when given
01:24:26a prearranged signal.
01:24:28Very well.
01:24:29I'm satisfied.
01:24:31Remember it seemed
01:24:32odd to all of us
01:24:33that Rostov
01:24:34was sending greetings
01:24:35from the deposed premier?
01:24:37Premier Savarnic
01:24:38sends warmest
01:24:40personal regards.
01:24:42The thing is,
01:24:43when Kalsinov was programmed,
01:24:44that premier
01:24:45was still in power.
01:24:46The signal,
01:24:47though outdated,
01:24:48had to remain the same.
01:24:50Without even realizing
01:24:51what he was doing,
01:24:52Kalsinov went back
01:24:53to his cabin.
01:24:54When he was there,
01:24:55he took some action.
01:24:57We'll probably never know
01:24:58what that was.
01:25:01It triggered
01:25:02the bomb blast.
01:25:06Neil!
01:25:07My God, Neil!
01:25:08So Kalsinov
01:25:10was actually killed
01:25:10by Alexander Rostov.
01:25:12He pulled the trigger,
01:25:14but Denrenko
01:25:14gave the order.
01:25:16I think they're both
01:25:17equally guilty.
01:25:18And they're gonna go free?
01:25:20Maybe so,
01:25:21but that's out of our hands.
01:25:22What about me?
01:25:24I gotta hunt you
01:25:25to wind up
01:25:25on the president's desk.
01:25:27He'll make the decision, Neil.
01:25:29I think the whole thing's
01:25:30gonna be swept under the rug.
01:25:31Maybe it will.
01:25:34Maybe it won't.
01:25:35I'll let you know
01:25:39what I hear.
01:25:39Now you hang in there.
01:25:40Thanks.
01:25:41I'm not going anywhere.
01:25:58Hello, Grace.
01:25:59Are we grandparents yet?
01:26:02We're not.
01:26:04I see.
01:26:07Grace, I'm getting a plane.
01:26:08I'm getting out of here
01:26:08as fast as I can.
01:26:09I'll be there this evening.
01:26:12Of course,
01:26:13I'm listening to you.
01:26:18Yes, dear.
01:26:21All I know is
01:26:22when I'm there,
01:26:23the babies get born on time.
01:26:24I love you, too.
01:26:27Bye-bye.
01:26:29Bye-bye.
