00:28one like this on your state exam. If you've already done so, we suggest that you watch the video on

00:34order of operations before watching this video. An expression is shown, which operation should be

00:40done first to simplify the expression. Here's a reminder of the order of operations. For elementary

00:48school, they're free boxes. The order of operations tells us which order to do things in. We start with

00:54the top box, then do the middle box, then do the bottom box. The order is parentheses,

01:01then multiply and divide, then add and subtract. One way to remember what words go in each box

01:07is to use a memory aid like this sentence. Please make drinks and sandwiches. The first

01:12letter of each word in the memory aid is the same as the first letter in the order of operations.

01:18We also write in a reminder that, if both are present,

01:21then do the left ones before the right ones. In this case, there are no parentheses,

01:28so we'll go to the red box. There is a division operation and a multiplication operation. The white

01:34print tells us if both are present, then do the left ones before the right ones. Since the division

01:40sign is on the left, we do the division before the multiplication. The first operation we do to

01:46solve this problem is 10 divided by 5. Choice C is correct. Let's solve this problem to get more

01:53practice. We start by doing division. Then we bring down the other numbers and operation symbols. Next,

01:59we do multiplication. 2 times 7 equals 14. We bring down the other numbers and operation symbols.

02:06Then we go to the blue box. There is a subtraction and an addition operation.

02:12The white print tells us if both are present. Then do the left ones before the right ones.

02:18In this case, the operation on the left is subtraction. So, we'll do that before the addition.

02:2316 minus 14 equals 2. We bring down the 9 and the plus sign. The only operation remaining is addition.
