00:00The Senate has looked virtually the same for the last 25 years.
00:05Welsh Labour have been the biggest party, and the rest of the seats have been made up of Conservative,
00:09Plaid Cymru and a smattering of Lib Dem Senate members.
00:12That looks, though, to be in the balance for the next term of the Senate after the election next year,
00:16with a much closer race than we've seen previously between Welsh Labour, Plaid Cymru and Reform UK.
00:22Plaid Cymru have topped the most recent poll by a few points,
00:26with 30% saying they'd vote Plaid, followed by 25% for Reform and 18% for Welsh Labour.
00:31With a full year until the elections, any polls, though, should be taken with a bucketload of salt,
00:36and plenty can change in that time.
00:38For now, though, Plaid leader Sreenap Yorworth hasn't shied away from the possibility of being the biggest party in the Senate
00:44and the chance to form a government.
00:47One of the more divisive issues Plaid Cymru hold is Welsh independence,
00:51something that has never truly reached broad appeal but has been a growing movement for some time now.
00:55Particularly among younger people in Wales.
00:58Happy Yorworth, though, has now officially said that his party will not seek an independence referendum
01:04if they were to be the biggest party, and instead focus on issues like the economy, health and education.
01:09His predecessor, Adam Price, promised to vote on independence within five years as part of their manifesto at the previous Senate elections.
01:16Welsh independence has seen numbers float around the 30% support mark, with the most recent survey in March this year putting it at 35% for, 50% against and 15% undecided.
01:29It's an issue that will come up again in the future, with occasional marches taking place around the country attracting thousands of supporters.
01:35But for now, the Senate election will be on fair funding for Wales and fixing the issues of the moment.
