From Chimneys to Continents: The Epic Migration of Storks

Storks are long-legged, long-beaked birds with wide wingspans. They typically live in wetlands and can grow up to one meter tall. One of the most well-known species is the white stork (Ciconia ciconia), especially famous for its long migrations between Turkey, Europe, and Africa.

Every year, storks migrate to Europe in the spring and return to Africa in the fall to spend the winter. During this journey, they travel thousands of kilometers, gliding on warm air currents to conserve energy.

Their diet is quite diverse and includes frogs, insects, small fish, and reptiles. They usually build their nests in high places—like trees, chimneys, and utility poles—and can use the same nest for many years.

Storks are considered symbols of good luck in many cultures. In some places, seeing a stork is believed to signal the arrival of spring. They are also often seen as symbols of loyalty and family.
