Catholic Australians welcome the newly elected Pope Leo XIV

Catholics across Australia had been eagerly awaiting the announcement of a new pontiff.

00:00I was a little surprised that he was an American, but I've been told he's a good man, a moderate,

00:12and will continue the work of Pope Francis.

00:15He spoke of peace in his opening address.

00:18We have a war now happening recently now in India and Pakistan, and then Ukraine and Russia,

00:26and there are still things happening in the Middle East, and so just so many unhappy and difficult things happening.

00:32And the Catholic Church, and I think this new Pope continues to emphasize, peace is very necessary.

00:38I'm very happy with the decision, you know, I'm sure, and I know the question is that he's an American,

00:43so I think it's a new beginning for everything. I love that, so I'm pretty happy.

00:49Oh, well, a lot of candles for him, and I'll tie a Hail Mary.

00:54How's that?

00:56Okay.

00:57I think he can continue the mission which Pope Francis has started.

01:00Eventually, the Church has chosen a successor to Peter, so I'm very happy about it.

01:05Eventually, we have a father.

01:07There is hope, yes, that he will continue what Pope Francis has begun, actually what St. Peter has begun.
