Wild Times at the San Diego Zoo

The older female kangaroo was starting to move slower than others kangaroos in her mob, so keepers did a scan and discovered she had injured her spine.

00:15Even just sitting, standing, or lying down

00:18is all helped by a system of our body

00:20called the skeletal system.

00:22It's made up of bones and joints

00:23all working together to give us our shape,

00:26protect our organs,

00:27and help us with our movement.

00:31This is Ima's skeletal system.

00:34And this is Ima.

00:37She is an 8-year-old female red kangaroo

00:40with a healthy appetite for life.

00:42And snacks.

00:43She loves to eat snacks.

00:47She currently resides with the other kangaroos

00:50in Kangaroo Kickabout at the Nashville Zoo.

00:52And they certainly have quite a full house on their hands.

01:00Ima is the oldest kangaroo in the mob here,

01:02but she still participates in regular training sessions

01:05with her keepers to get in a little exercise.

01:12Recently, Ima's keepers noticed she was slowing down

01:15and not moving as much as the others.

01:17Being that she's older,

01:18it makes sense that she might be a little slower

01:20than some of those other young-garoos.

01:25The veterinary staff took pictures of her bones,

01:28called radiographs,

01:29and they were able to see that she had actually injured her spine.

01:33Never fear, though,

01:34the veterinarians have an idea.

01:36For Ima's next training session,

01:38they invited Dr. Brian Pascoe.

01:42His patients are usually humans,

01:44not kangaroos.

01:45But for Ima, he's happy to make an exception.

01:48Dr. Pascoe is a chiropractor,

01:51a doctor who specializes in bones and joints,

01:53so he is the perfect fit for Ima's needs.

01:57Just like he would with his human patients,

02:00he skillfully uses his hands to feel down Ima's spine.

02:04He introduces her to some tools.

02:05These will help to take any unnecessary pressure off of her joints.

02:13Ima even gets to use a laser,

02:16which will stimulate her body and help to heal faster.

02:20All while enjoying a yummy sweet potato treat.

02:23Only the VIP treatment is good enough for Ima.

02:28One final look to make sure Ima's bones

02:30are all lined up properly

02:31and working together as they should.

02:35Looks like she's all good to go.

02:38Now she can return to the mob

02:39and get back to more important things,

02:42like partaking in a few more snacks.
