00:00Today I learned of the terrifying way married couples used to settle disputes called marital
00:05duels. In medieval Germany, if a husband and wife couldn't resolve their differences peacefully,
00:10they could settle the dispute with a legal duel. But there were rules to make it an even playing
00:15field, and the outcomes were terrifying. The husband could only use one arm and would be
00:19placed in a hole waist deep. The wife, on the other hand, had a bag full of rocks and would
00:24wear weighted clothing to slow her down. The duel ended when one was incapacitated or surrendered,
00:29but if you lost, that was the end of you. If the husband lost, he would get beheaded,
00:34and if the wife lost, she would get buried alive.
