Every once in a while, a funny thing happens in Hollywood where comparable movies hit the big screen in the same year. Remember when Antz and A Bug’s Life both came out in 1998? Or how about when The Illusionist and The Prestige were part of 2006’s slate? And one cannot forget that time when Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War both pitted major heroes against each other in 2016. This year, history is repeating itself when it comes to imaginary friend movies between Blumhouse’s Imaginary and Paramount’s IF.
With Imaginary up first among them in the 2024 movie release schedule, CinemaBlend spoke to producer Jason Blum and director Jeff Wadlow about the coincidence. Here’s what Wadlow shared about the fascinating phenomenon.

00:00I find it so fascinating that there's two imaginary friends movies this year.
00:04Right?
00:05I was wondering if you've talked to John Krasinski at all or what your reactions have been to that.
00:08You know, they're editing the movie on the same floor as us in New York City.
00:11I walked by Krasinski a couple times and I was like, I felt like I'm dating someone's girlfriend.
00:16I had my head down like this, oh yeah.
00:18Have you talked to him about it or anything?
00:20No, no.
00:21Have you heard of anyone about it?
00:22No, I mean, I've worked with Ryan a few times.
00:24I haven't reached out to him yet.
00:25I just kind of want to just leave it alone.
00:27We played, we did a funny kind of like a funny thing during the Super Bowl because there was an ad for that movie during the Super Bowl.
00:36And then we did this funny thing online around it.
00:38But I saw John Krasinski about two or three weeks ago and he was a little, he was a little standoffish.
00:45So I hope he's not upset with us, but I really think there's plenty of room for imaginary movies in the world.
00:50I love it.
00:51I think, yeah, I'm like double feature.
00:53Like I love this cross programming.
00:54And also look, the tones are so different.
00:56Yeah, exactly.
00:57Movies are tone, the audiences are very different.
00:58The audiences are very different.
00:59Yeah, this is not like a White House down, Olympus has fallen kind of situation.
01:01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:02They're very different movies.
01:04Bye.
