00:00Hello, and welcome to Gardener's World.
00:30Would you believe me if I told you this is our fourth year in this garden?
00:37And if I go back to when we moved in, the soil in general was absolutely lifeless.
00:43No worms, just felt dead.
00:46So I've mulched and mulched and mulched for those first three years,
00:51until last year the herbaceous perennials all got slightly taller than they should have done.
00:56Full of nitrogen, so a little bit soft.
01:00So this year I'm backing off.
01:02All those areas that contain herbaceous perennials, I'm not going to mulch.
01:07But things like my shrubs, so this, Cotinus cogria, my roses, my trees, they're all going to be mulched.
01:14What that will do, keep the weeds down, lock in moisture,
01:17but at the same time it will give that plant some goodness.
01:20So what I've done is I actually put about 50ml of well-rotted manure,
01:26but what you want to do is not put it too close in around those stems,
01:31because if you start to build soil and compost in around any wooded stem,
01:36you'll start to rot the plant.
01:38Now, I've got plenty of this to get on with,
01:42but why I'm doing that is what's coming up on today's programme.
01:47Rachel is in the West Country, enjoying the glory of magnolias.
01:53If you've got a small garden where you can let the tree go skyward,
01:57but it's confined in terms of the space around it,
02:00this could be the perfect solution.
02:01We are off to Northampton to meet a couple
02:06who have worked wonders with their back garden.
02:10What we've created here is a mini rainforest.
02:14Adverley takes a tour of an English landscape garden.
02:18That still has the power to amaze.
02:21The first wonder you encounter is this, the crystal grotto.
02:27We're off to Cornwall to meet a man
02:30who has fallen head over heels for crocosmia
02:33and knows a thing or two about growing them.
02:38If you put a bright red crocosmia or yellow one
02:41at the end of the garden,
02:42your eye is drawn right the way down to it.
02:45Plus, I have someone special to introduce you to.
02:48Right, we're going to have a little walk around the garden
03:13just to explain the layout.
03:14You come in the front gate,
03:15you come up these series of gravel steps.
03:18This side, you've got this sort of mini meadow
03:21with pear trees dotting through at the moment, full of bulbs.
03:28So interestingly, we have big space at the front,
03:30but, you know, we do go onto the road.
03:33So it wasn't necessarily a space you come and sit in.
03:35So for me, this was always going to be the veg garden,
03:39but I wanted interest throughout the year.
03:41So it's very much set up as an ornamental kitchen garden.
03:43So all the time, when you're looking out the windows,
03:46you've got something to enjoy and look at.
03:50So now we're going round the back.
03:53So as you go in,
03:56you've got this tiny sort of little secret courtyard,
03:59but it's all driven by green,
04:00so it gets cooler, calmer.
04:02There's not much in the way of colour.
04:05At the moment, the tree ferns are all cut
04:07and folded in themselves just to protect them.
04:09We can now wander round to the back.
04:14And the back really is very much built in layers.
04:16So when you're down on that bottom terrace,
04:18you're 2.5 metres lower
04:21than you are when you get up to the greenhouse.
04:23But it's quite a wide garden,
04:25so you've got these sort of series of rectangles.
04:28This is the main sort of social family area.
04:31My little unkept lawn with the mowing around,
04:35seating at one end,
04:36and my office and the outside kitchen there.
04:40So you've got wit.
04:42So as we go up,
04:43that archway coming off the garage,
04:44it just sort of breaks the space again
04:46and draws you through.
04:48And now we're up into the gravel garden.
04:50And I think with gravel garden,
04:52well, instantly, look,
04:53I'm back out in the sun.
04:55So if you imagine, again, in the summer,
04:57this beautiful place to sit,
04:59we lower the seating so you're in the planting.
05:03And then you've got this big border
05:04that goes all the way round,
05:06and that makes this area feel really quite intimate.
05:11When you're moving from area to area,
05:14not just thinking about how you want it to look,
05:16but how you want it to feel.
05:18If I take you back to the front gate,
05:20you go from the meadow,
05:21and then that working garden,
05:24getting your hands in the soil,
05:25how good it is for you.
05:27Come round the side,
05:28it's quiet, it's peaceful.
05:30Then you come onto the main terrace,
05:32you're starting to liven it up,
05:33it's family.
05:34Next one up, it's social space,
05:36weekends, cooking, being together.
05:39And then as you get up the garden,
05:40it just becomes slightly more peaceful.
05:43Do you want to go on there?
06:00Good boy, good boy.
06:03Right, pruning this elder,
06:06which is Sambucus nigra thundercloud.
06:10Incredibly wonderful, dark foliage,
06:13flower that appears sort of deep red to start with,
06:16softens off as a pink,
06:18and then later on in the year,
06:20you get the berries.
06:21So as far as pruning it,
06:24you could cut it hard back to the ground
06:25if you just wanted foliage.
06:27But as you can see,
06:29I've got flowers starting to form,
06:30so they form on last year's growth.
06:33So I'm going to try and get a balance
06:35between keeping some of the flower
06:36against creating new foliage.
06:39If you read about this,
06:41it would tell you that
06:42it grows up to four metres.
06:44And if you've got a smaller garden,
06:45you say, well, I can't grow that.
06:47But because you can quite brutally prune,
06:50you could buy something like this.
06:53So what I'm going to do
06:54is just going to start to reduce some of these,
06:56which is losing some flower,
06:59but keeping others.
07:01And again, you know, it's now growing.
07:04A lot of the time it will tell you,
07:06you know, to do this pruning
07:07through its dormant period.
07:10But because they are tough as old boots,
07:14I will get away with it.
07:15And remember, it's not just,
07:17you know, things like
07:18these elders you can do it with.
07:20You could look at
07:21things like the dogwoods.
07:23I mean, over there,
07:24I've got a cotinus,
07:26the salixis, so the willows,
07:28even some of the eucalyptus,
07:29and, you know, and other shrubs
07:31will very much take that pruning.
07:34So if you're down the garden centre
07:37and you're looking for a particular shrub
07:38for a particular look,
07:40and it says it grows to a certain size,
07:42just do a little bit of research
07:43because you might well find
07:45that you can prune and simplify.
07:49So what I've done
07:50is taken the crossing branches
07:52out of the middle.
07:54Then what I've done
07:54is tried to create a framework.
07:56And then when you're pruning,
07:57I'm cutting, literally,
08:00just above those buds.
08:03Right, I've got a bit of clearing up to do.
08:06But while I'm doing that,
08:08we're off to Yonkers Nursery
08:09in Somerset,
08:10where Rachel is enjoying
08:13some spring colour.
08:14At this time of year,
08:20it's lovely to see buds on trees
08:22and the odd green leaf peeping through.
08:27But some trees go really bold
08:30right from the start,
08:31and amongst this sea of bare branches,
08:33there's suddenly masses of colour,
08:36like magnolias.
08:43Most magnolias flower early in the year,
08:46before their leaves appear,
08:48and create this beautiful blast of colour.
08:53Older varieties of magnolia
08:55were often huge,
08:57much too big, really,
08:58for the average garden.
09:00But more recently,
09:02cultivars have been developed
09:03that are not only smaller,
09:05they come in a welter
09:06of beautiful colours.
09:12Their flowers range in shape, too,
09:15from the globe
09:16to strappy petals
09:18and even one known as
09:21a cup and saucer.
09:25Torsten Jönker grew up
09:26in this family business,
09:28which grows and propagates
09:29all its shrubs and trees
09:31on site from scratch.
09:33And there's also two acres
09:35where they trial and display
09:37many fabulous magnolia varieties.
09:44What do you think it is
09:46that you feel
09:47makes magnolias so special?
09:49Well, they have
09:50a wonderfully long period
09:51of interest.
09:52Even before the flowers open,
09:53you have the buds,
09:54which have a fantastic presence,
09:56whether it's with frost on them,
09:58the sun through them,
09:58or raindrops on them.
10:01You have a good range
10:03of structures as well,
10:04whether it's more narrow
10:06and upright
10:06or more broad and horizontal.
10:07Lots going for them.
10:09Yes, indeed.
10:12The old magnolias
10:13can take more than 15 years
10:15to flower well,
10:17but the modern varieties
10:18are much quicker.
10:22I'm really struck by
10:24the number of buds
10:26and open flowers
10:27on this particular one.
10:29And the buds,
10:30they're really everywhere,
10:31right along the length
10:32of the stem.
10:33It's a key feature
10:34of the newer hybrids
10:35is to ensure
10:36that you do get
10:37all of these flowers
10:38all the way through
10:39the structure
10:40as opposed to just
10:41at the tips,
10:42like on some of the
10:43older species
10:44where the flowers
10:45can often end up
10:46just on the perimeter
10:47of the growing area.
10:48Yes,
10:49because they're really
10:50right at the top,
10:51aren't they?
10:51So you can't see them,
10:52you can't enjoy them up there.
10:54Whereas this one
10:55is absolutely magnificent
10:57and I know which one
10:59I'd rather have.
11:00I'm so impressed with this.
11:05The sheer amount of buds
11:07on these new trees
11:08also means
11:09that if frost hits,
11:11it's less disastrous.
11:14Most of these hybrids
11:15have flowers
11:16that open in succession.
11:17If the first flowers
11:18get caught by a frost,
11:19there's usually another flush
11:20that will follow on.
11:21That's brilliant, isn't it?
11:21So you're going to get
11:22that display
11:23no matter what?
11:24Hopefully, yes.
11:29When it comes to planting,
11:31magnolias like
11:31moisture-retentive soil
11:33at their roots
11:34all year round.
11:35And though some
11:36prefer more acid soils,
11:38others can manage without.
11:42I would dearly love
11:44to plant a magnolia
11:45at home,
11:46but I'm in the Cotswolds
11:47on limestone,
11:48so I've always been
11:48a little bit cautious.
11:50But is there something
11:51that I could grow
11:52when it's a bit alkaline?
11:54Well, the magnolia cobus,
11:56this one is
11:57cobus, whistly star,
11:58and the closely related
11:59magnolia stellata
12:00are the most tolerant
12:01of slightly alkaline conditions.
12:05It is really beautiful
12:06and I'm tempted,
12:08but would I be pushing
12:10it too far
12:10if I went for,
12:12you know,
12:12one of the really dark,
12:13sumptuous ones
12:14with the goblet-shaped flowers?
12:16They are less tolerant,
12:17generally,
12:19but there are things
12:19you can do
12:20to improve that.
12:21So the addition
12:22of a good quality topsoil,
12:23preferably slightly acidic,
12:25dug into the surrounding area,
12:27creating a slight mound
12:28of good quality soil,
12:30and the soil structure
12:31is often more important
12:33in this sort of scenario
12:33than the specific acidity,
12:35as long as it isn't too extreme.
12:37Okay,
12:37so it's a possibility?
12:39It's a possibility.
12:40Now you've got me thinking.
12:41Yonkers plant all their magnolias
12:47fairly high
12:48in a gently raised bed
12:50or mound
12:51like an upturned saucer
12:52of topsoil and mulch.
12:54It lifts them up
12:56out of the wet
12:56and holds the moisture in.
13:03As well as bringing in new colours,
13:05the hybrids come
13:07in a greater variety
13:08of shapes
13:09and sizes.
13:12This beauty
13:13is starbright.
13:15It was planted
13:16ten years ago
13:16and as you can see,
13:18it's really nice
13:19and compact,
13:19got a lovely branching shape
13:21and very definitely
13:22a shrub
13:23and not a tree.
13:26And I think
13:26with the combination
13:27of these lovely
13:28velvety buds
13:29opening to these
13:30small but starry
13:31white flowers,
13:32it's not only
13:33really useful,
13:34it's stunning.
13:39Yellow magnolias
13:41tend to be
13:42later flowering
13:43so the buds
13:44are just showing.
13:45But gosh,
13:46there are some
13:47purple beauties.
13:50Now this one
13:51I think
13:51is very special.
13:53It's called
13:53royal purple
13:54and it's fastidiate
13:56like a column.
13:57It just goes
13:57straight up.
13:59But
13:59what I love about it
14:01is that you've got
14:01flowers
14:02right from the very base.
14:03Look,
14:03there's stems
14:04just coming out
14:05at all angles.
14:06There's sort of
14:06whirls arranged
14:08around the trunk
14:09so it's got
14:10masses of flower
14:11on it.
14:12I think this is
14:13a perfect choice
14:14if you've got
14:14a small garden
14:15where you can
14:16let the tree
14:16go skyward
14:17but it's confined
14:19in terms of
14:19the space around it.
14:21This could be
14:21the perfect solution.
14:22amazing.
14:32Amazingly,
14:33some magnolia
14:34flowers
14:34are so
14:35sensitive
14:36to weather
14:37they can open
14:38with a slightly
14:39different shade
14:40to their neighbours
14:40even on the same tree.
14:43and some
14:50are just
14:51downright
14:52magnificent.

15:04Isn't she a beauty?
15:05And I must say
15:06I'm really drawn
15:07to these
15:08very sumptuous
15:09velvety
15:10dark
15:10plummy
15:11pinks.
15:12so beautiful
15:13but I've been
15:14blown away
15:14by the range
15:15of different
15:16magnolias here.
15:17It's so impressive
15:19and I'm now
15:21feeling much
15:21braver
15:22about trying
15:23a magnolia
15:23in my own
15:24garden
15:24because when
15:25I look into
15:26the heart
15:26of this flower
15:27it just says
15:28love.
15:42I thought that
15:58was absolutely
16:00glorious
16:01and do we not
16:02all need
16:03a magnolia
16:04moment
16:05and there you go
16:06that's mine
16:07magnolia
16:09merrill
16:09and I'm
16:10exactly the
16:11same as
16:11Rachel
16:11so very
16:12alkaline
16:13soil
16:13but that
16:13is really
16:14happy
16:14so what I
16:15would suggest
16:16if you want
16:16to add a
16:17magnolia
16:17go out
16:18and test
16:19your soil
16:19buy yourself
16:20a little
16:20kit
16:20and find
16:21out whether
16:22you've got
16:22acid
16:22or alkaline
16:23soil
16:24it's a good
16:28time of year
16:29if you've got
16:30a water feature
16:31to give it a
16:32check over
16:33and a clean up
16:34two years ago
16:35create this
16:36lovely little
16:37focal point
16:37and it's a
16:38really simple
16:39tub and it's
16:40been an
16:40absolute joy
16:41so first thing
16:43check that
16:43you've got no
16:44little tag poles
16:45about or
16:46anything like
16:46that but
16:47what I'm going
16:48to do is
16:49start to
16:49clean this
16:50out
16:50and if I
16:51use this
16:51old sieve
16:52I can leave
16:53this
16:53so any
16:55little creepy
16:56crawlies
16:56will go
16:57back into
16:58the pond
16:59and we're
17:00not just
17:01doing this
17:01purely because
17:02it looks
17:03better
17:03you can
17:04more or less
17:05feel it
17:05straight away
17:06you know
17:06this stuff
17:07is starting
17:07to rot
17:08down
17:08and what
17:11will happen
17:11as it
17:12rots
17:13it starts
17:14to change
17:15the nutrient
17:16levels
17:16in the water
17:17which then
17:18starts to
17:19go green
17:19so let's
17:21put that
17:21over there
17:22and then we
17:23can clean
17:23this
17:24right out
17:25if you
17:27are thinking
17:28about building
17:29the water
17:30feature
17:30I mean the
17:31key elements
17:31really
17:32you've got the
17:33marginal plant
17:33so here I've
17:34got a little
17:35rush and
17:36marsh marigold
17:37beautiful yellow
17:38flower they act
17:38as habitat
17:39anything that
17:40comes out the
17:40water can hide
17:41itself in there
17:43and the dwarf
17:45water lily that
17:46sits in here
17:46covers probably
17:47about 50%
17:48of that surface
17:49that helps to
17:50control the
17:51temperature
17:51and then
17:52somewhere in
17:53here you've
17:54got the
17:54oxygenating
17:55plant
17:55it provides
17:56oxygen
17:57which helps
17:59keep that
18:00water balanced
18:00so I did
18:03say I had
18:04a surprise
18:05for you
18:05come around
18:06here young

18:55you would

19:06you approach

19:08from the
19:08front
19:08that this
19:09is what
19:09we have

19:10back
19:10this
19:13garden
19:13is a
19:14chill out
19:15space
19:16an unwinding
19:17place
19:18where I
19:18can be
19:19myself
19:19and
19:20completely
19:21be
19:22at one
19:23with
19:24the space
19:24I'm Joe
19:27and I'm
19:28Linda
19:29and this
19:29is our
19:30beautiful
19:31home where
19:31we live
19:31with baby
19:32Django
19:32in Northampton
19:33Linda
19:36was studying
19:36in Colombia
19:37and we went
19:38and lived
19:38there for a
19:39while
19:39we also
19:40travelled
19:40Malaysia
19:41Borneo
19:42quite a bit
19:42of South
19:43America
19:43and we got
19:44huge inspiration
19:46from the
19:46rainforest
19:46and we
19:47decided we
19:48wanted to
19:48come back
19:48to the
19:49UK
19:49and recreate
19:50that
19:50when we
20:03first moved
20:03into this
20:04house
20:04it was
20:05a dumping
20:06ground
20:06so if I
20:08had known
20:09what it
20:09was going
20:10to be
20:10I think
20:11I would
20:11have said
20:12to Joe
20:12that it's
20:12crazy
20:13that's just
20:14something
20:14that we
20:15could
20:15never create
20:16it would
20:17be such
20:17a long
20:17journey
20:18which
20:18I think
20:19it was
20:19a long
20:20journey
20:20but I
20:21would not
20:21change it
20:22for anything
20:23because it
20:23is so
20:24unique
20:24I'm lucky
20:27enough to
20:28build ponds
20:29for a living
20:29I absolutely
20:30love it
20:31I don't
20:31even call
20:32it a job
20:32so with
20:33the knowledge
20:33I gained
20:34through all
20:34of my
20:34research
20:35I decided
20:35now it's
20:36our turn
20:37what we've
20:41created here
20:41is a mini
20:42rainforest
20:43we've put
20:44in tall
20:45trees
20:45we've put
20:46in bamboos
20:47we've created
20:47a lot of
20:48height
20:48within the
20:49space
20:49and what
20:50that's done
20:50is it's
20:51enveloped
20:51us with
20:52foliage
20:53spanning right
20:54across the
20:55garden
20:55probably the
20:56majority of
20:57the garden
20:57is water
20:58we started
21:00to build
21:01the pond
21:01by excavating
21:03so we
21:03shelved
21:04the area
21:04out
21:05we've
21:06then put
21:07an underlay
21:07in
21:08we've covered
21:09that with
21:10a liner
21:10and then
21:11we've put
21:12an overlay
21:12in to
21:13protect the
21:14liner
21:14from the
21:15rock
21:15so if
21:16you build
21:16your pond
21:17in the
21:17rainy
21:18season
21:18then you
21:19can wait
21:19for the
21:20rain to
21:20fill it
21:20up
21:21naturally
21:21or you
21:22can use
21:22water
21:23collected
21:23in your
21:24water
21:24butts
21:25the reason
21:26for using
21:26rainwater
21:27is that
21:28tap water
21:28contains
21:29chlorine
21:29and that
21:30will
21:30kill off
21:31beneficial
21:32bacteria
21:33within the
21:33pond
21:33behind us
21:37is
21:37mostly
21:38in shade
21:39so we
21:39have put
21:40plants
21:40that love
21:41shade
21:41and do
21:42well in
21:42shade
21:43we have
21:43some
21:44brunner
21:44jack
21:44frost
21:45we
21:46also
21:47have
21:47fat
21:47tears
21:48and they
21:48are great
21:49because
21:49they are
21:49evergreen
21:50so they
21:50give interest
21:51in the
21:52winter
21:52as well
21:52we also
21:54have
21:54some palm
21:55trees
21:56and a
21:56tree
21:56fern
21:57which we
21:57rescued
21:58because
21:58someone
21:59was throwing
22:00it out
22:00so we managed
22:01to bring it
22:02back to life
22:02so we're really
22:03proud of that
22:04tree fern
22:04because it's a
22:05really old one
22:06and it's
22:06and it's quite
22:07an unusual
22:07variety
22:08it's a
22:08Dixonia
22:09fibrosa
22:10there's not
22:11that many
22:11of them
22:11about
22:12so what
22:23we've tried
22:24to create
22:24here is
22:25basically a
22:25little jungle
22:26stream
22:26coming out
22:27from underneath
22:28the foliage
22:28and how we've
22:30enhanced this
22:30area is by
22:31basically putting
22:32in small and
22:34large leaves
22:34contrasting each
22:35other
22:35so you get the
22:37effect there
22:38of a jungle
22:39scene
22:39we've used
22:41these tetrapanax
22:42papyriferra
22:43rex
22:43large leaf plants
22:45that give that
22:46sort of statement
22:47we've also used
22:48many little ferns
22:49and eucomus
22:50there for the
22:52tropical look
22:53since I put this
22:55pond in
22:56I've seen a massive
22:57increase in the
22:58wildlife that we've
22:59got birdlife
23:01amphibians
23:02invertebrates
23:03they've all come
23:04and made this
23:04place home
23:05this is my
23:14little Balinese
23:16sanctuary
23:17so my right here
23:19I've got the
23:20Japanese water
23:21feature that I
23:21made
23:22so this is an
23:23antique cauldron
23:24with some
23:26bamboo poles
23:28a little pump
23:29in there that
23:30just constantly
23:30recirculates the
23:31water
23:32this is cheap
23:33to make
23:34easy to buy
23:35and will fit
23:36into any
23:37small space
23:38like a balcony
23:38it's a wonderful
23:40thing for a
23:41small garden
23:42I suffer with
23:46anxiety
23:46and I find that
23:47that is a place
23:48where I can
23:49really just
23:50calm down
23:51be myself
23:52and get away
23:53from it all
23:53I am very
23:55passionate about
23:56inspiring anybody
23:58to have water
23:58in their space
23:59amazing for
24:00wildlife
24:01and it
24:02adds a
24:03completely new
24:04element to
24:04people's spaces
24:05and it's a
24:07beautiful thing
24:07that he's getting
24:08our baby
24:09jungle into
24:09as well
24:10this garden
24:12wouldn't be
24:13what it is
24:13without your
24:14planting
24:14and your
24:15knowledge of
24:15the plants
24:16which is
24:17I think
24:18for that reason
24:18we'll make
24:19a really good
24:19team
24:19yeah
24:20definitely
24:20Linda

24:37created
24:38some garden
24:40but also
24:40the fact that
24:41yes
24:42it looks
24:42very tropical
24:43but not all
24:44of those plants
24:45were
24:46some good
24:47really hard
24:48working
24:48herbaceous
24:49plants
24:49but thinking
24:50very much
24:51about shape
24:51and form
24:53talking of
24:54tropicals
24:55or the tender
24:56plants that we
24:57have tucked away
24:58for the winter
24:59we're getting
25:00very close to
25:01that time of year
25:02when we need
25:02to go and
25:03check how
25:04things have
25:04got on
25:05so
25:10September
25:12October
25:13time
25:13anything
25:13that I think
25:14is tender
25:15comes in
25:16and then I've
25:16put this fleece
25:17over the top
25:18so there's no
25:19heat in here
25:20whatsoever
25:20so everything
25:21you're about to
25:22see
25:22has dealt
25:23with the winter
25:24with a little
25:24bit of protection
25:25so here we go
25:27a couple of years
25:28ago
25:28during that
25:29really cold

28:35and then later
28:36on in the

28:36the dahlias

43:39bred has come
43:40ultimately
43:40from those
43:41species tulips
43:42and I think
43:43with me
43:43I've gone
43:44full circle
43:45and I'm back
43:45to so many
43:46of those
43:47simple plants
43:48but
43:49why am I
43:50growing them
43:51in containers
43:51why not just
43:52put them out
43:52in the garden
43:53well over the
43:54last five

46:20hybrids
46:21nowadays
46:21so
46:22plenty for
46:23everyone
46:23whether it's
46:24small or
46:24tall
46:25or
46:25early flowering
46:26or late
46:26flowering
46:27there's one
46:28for everyone
46:28and the
46:29colours range
46:30from yellow
46:30into all
46:31the different
46:32tones
46:32of orange
46:33and salmon
46:33and apricot
46:34and then
46:35on into
46:35the reds
46:36getting into
46:36deep reds
46:37and then
46:38you get into
46:39bi-coloured ones
46:39and even
46:40pinker tones
46:41so there's
46:41quite a lot
46:42so I guess
46:45for many
46:45gardeners
46:46the reference
46:46point for
46:47crocosmia
46:47is this
46:48this is
46:48Montbrescia
46:49this is the
46:50one that jumps
46:50the garden fence
46:51and spreads
46:52around a lot
46:52and these
46:53are the flowers
46:54you'll be
46:54familiar with
46:55but they're
46:55so varied
46:56there are
46:57many different
46:57aspects
46:58there are
46:59ones like
47:00this with
47:00small tubular
47:01flowers
47:01this one
47:02grows
47:02alongside
47:03streams
47:04in South
47:04Africa
47:04you get
47:06arching stems
47:08this is totally
47:09different to
47:09the look of
47:10Montbrescia
47:11in fact this
47:11is one of the
47:12parents of
47:12the variety
47:13called Lucifer
47:14that we all
47:14know
47:15lovely heads
47:16up to 30
47:16flowers on
47:17each stem
47:18there
47:18and in the
47:19wild they go
47:20even more
47:20varied with
47:21these herringbone
47:22flowers
47:22this one
47:23here is
47:24actually
47:24pollinated
47:25by the
47:25malachite
47:26sunbird
47:26in South
47:27Africa
47:27and each
47:28flower is
47:29exactly the
47:29same length
47:30and curvature
47:32of the beak
47:33of the bird
47:33so that he
47:34can get down
47:34there and get
47:35the nectar
47:35and do the
47:36feeding and
47:37do the
47:38pollinating at
47:38the same
47:38time so
47:39they're really
47:39very varied
47:40typically
47:42crocosmia have
47:42these lovely
47:43sword-shaped
47:44leaves which
47:45go alongside
47:45them
47:46sometimes
47:47they're
47:47unpleated
47:48like this
47:48one
47:49sometimes
47:49they're
47:50deeply
47:50pleated
47:50and huge
47:51and sometimes
47:52they can

47:56so they vary
47:57quite a lot

48:41near the top
48:42of the mountain
48:42there with
48:43delicate leaves
48:44and these
48:44beautiful sort
48:45of tangerine
48:46orange flowers
48:47nodding over
48:48the water
48:48we do all
48:49this breeding
48:50to try and
48:51create better
48:51plants
48:52I don't think
48:52we can beat
48:53nature
48:53nature does
48:54it best
48:54this is just
48:55beautiful

48:56little flowers
48:57the whole thing
48:58is just dainty
48:59and lovely
