00:46the labor union movement in the 19th century especially in the united states during the

00:52industrial revolution workers often had to work 12 to 16 hours a day six or even seven days a week

01:07laws to protect them in response to these conditions labor unions began to demand reforms one of their

01:15major demands was the establishment of an eight-hour work day the demand gained momentum in the united

01:22states and on may 1st 1886 a nationwide strike was organized the haymarket affair the turning point

01:39chicago on may 4th 1886 during a peaceful rally in support of the eight-hour work day an unknown person threw a bomb at the police

01:51the explosion killed several police officers and civilians in response the police fired on the crowd resulting

02:07there was no proof of their involvement in the bombing the event became a symbol of the struggle
