00:00A Finnish company is going to test the limits of wood by launching a wooden satellite into space.
00:09The nanosatellite, called WISA WoodSat, will measure almost 4 inches in length, depth, and width respectively,
00:15and will be launched aboard a rocket from New Zealand's Mahia Peninsula launch complex later this year.
00:21The mission of the satellite is to see the extreme conditions space will have on the WISA birch plywood for an extended period of time.
00:28It will also have a lower environmental impact and lower cost.
00:32The satellite is a collaboration with UPM Plywood, Arctic Astronautics, and Scandinavian design household.
00:39WoodSat is believed to be a more sustainable plywood and could replace fossil fuels with renewable wood-based materials.
00:46Sami Jukselinen from UPM Plywood commented,
00:49We know that the plywood withstand those harsh environments very well and also there is lots of mechanical stress and strains.
