(Session 3) Ronnie O'Sullivan vs Pang Jinxu - HALO World Championship 2025
Transcript
00:00He's the rising sun, Pang Zheng Siu!
00:30And finally to the greatest player in history, ready to seize a record extending 23rd Crucible quarter-final three decades after his first, the seven-time champion of the world, blink and you'll miss him, the rocket, Ronnie O'Sullivan.
01:00APPLAUSE
01:20Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Fame 17, Pang Yung Sutabek.
01:26Evening, Hazel, and good evening, everybody. And it's Pang Jung Zu to get this third session underway.
01:41And it's always a pleasure to be in the commentary box with the 1997 champion of the world, Ken Doherty. What a lovely thing that did, Pang came out there.
01:50Yeah, it was lovely to see, wasn't it? It really was a wonderful reception for all four players, a nice seat, Pang Jung Zu.
01:59He came down the stairs.
02:00And here it is. Have a look at that. Isn't that a wonderful picture?
02:09Yeah, and that's what it means coming out of the Crucible Theatre.
02:14I mean, to all intents and purposes, you feel his race has been run. But just to see that enjoyment, the thrill on his face. Wonderful.
02:27And that's what the Crucible Theatre can do for any snooker player.
02:42So Ronnie just one frame away from a place in the quarterfinal. Assessment of Ronnie so far in the tournament, Ken?
02:58Yeah, I think he's been good, I don't think he's been at his best.
03:02But nobody has really scratched the surface with him at all, put him under any pressure.
03:08Ali Carter in the first match, Pang in the second round.
03:17Hasn't been really tested yet, but good signs for Ronnie, he looks very focused.
03:23Even when he came out, it was, you know, great shot, great opening ref.
03:30But even when he came out the stairs.
03:34He wants to get the job done as early as possible.
03:39Pang.
03:43I have other thoughts.
03:53I think as a player, when you come out in the arena in this situation, you'd love to get it to the final session.
04:02Play four frames before they have a mid-session interval.
04:07That would be his aim, just to take it to the final session.
04:12It's a big ask, of course.
04:21No, I agree with you. I don't think Ronnie's been pushed, but all the talk of getting used to the new cue and everything else.
04:27So he's getting plenty of practice time.
04:29And in the second session of this match, he was playing a few shots with a smile on his face, which was lovely to see.
04:38Well, I'm not sure he wanted to kiss that red, but he has done, but he's left it on to the right middle, so it's not all bad.
04:55Can he avoid the kiss on the black and get good position on it?
05:02It's not straightforward.
05:08And he just took his eye after pot, trying to get that position, the good position on the black, which he got, but of course, the red never went in.
05:20Just trying to pinch a bit.
05:21Yeah, I think, you know, as you go back to what you think about Ronnie's game, he's going to get better, isn't he?
05:39You know, he's had two matches.
05:43And he hasn't been really tested.
05:45He's showed some great form, some wonderful centuries and scoring.
05:51Some of the shots that he's had to play with Syed.
05:54He's trying to get used to that new feral, of course.
05:59But he's taken...
06:00It will take a little bit of time, you can't expect him to come right back to his best.
06:03There you see it, titanium feral, new Q as well.
06:09Such a talent, isn't he?
06:12That he can come back after five months, John.
06:15Still play to the standard he's playing at.
06:18And...
06:20Well, he looks like he's in the quarter-finals of the World Championships without a scratch.
06:25So, I'm sure he looks good as he's doing well, and he's doing well on the boundary of the World Championships without a scratch.
06:55Yeah, we talk about only having five months off,
06:59but of course it was 2013, but he had the whole season off.
07:03He came along and nobody knew what to expect.
07:08And he won the title.
07:11I think that was one of the greatest feats that has ever happened in the sport.
07:16Taking the full 12 months off, winning the title.
07:19Not playing a competitive match for 12 months,
07:23but coming back and winning the title again,
07:25well, I don't think that will ever happen again.
07:41That was a dangerous shot to play.
07:43Has he been fortunate? Not left anything easy for Ronnie?
07:49Well, there is a red.
07:52The outside red on the right,
07:55you can see it goes to the right of the pink.
07:57I decided not to play it.
08:02Just played the safety.
08:04An excellent cue ball it is.
08:08Left the pot on to this right corner.
08:16Full length of the table, tight under the cushion.
08:19The only chance he's got of getting position is to roll it slowly
08:22and play for the black in the opposite corner.
08:25Tough shot.
08:33Well, he wasn't close to the pot.
08:35The way he played it, it looked like he played safety,
08:37but believe me, folks, he went for the pot.
08:39Ronnie's still not tempted.
09:00It's quite interesting.
09:01I was having a conversation with Stephen Henry the other day
09:03and it was going on about Ronnie
09:05and this titanian tip,
09:07which apparently he doesn't throw like the normal brass barrel.
09:10And Stephen said he'd have never done it at this time of his career.
09:14You know, because all his career,
09:16he's been playing a certain way how the balls throw.
09:19So, it was a brave decision from Ronnie.
09:24Yeah, I totally agree.
09:25It goes against every grain of thought
09:29and every era of practice previously he would have had.
09:37But he's always searching.
09:39That's the one great thing about Ronnie,
09:41no matter how well he's played over the years
09:43and all the wonderful achievements.
09:45In all the tournaments that he's won around the world,
09:50he's still searching.
09:52Always searching for perfection.
09:55And trying to be a better player.
09:56When trying out new things, different coaches.
10:03And I suppose like in every sport, John,
10:06the best are never happier.
10:08They always want to try and better themselves
10:10and Ronnie is no exception to that.
10:15Yeah, absolutely.
10:18This is a good safety shot from Junsu.
10:22Well played.
10:27So, a rather tentative start to this frame.
10:30I can understand it from Pang.
10:34Ronnie, though, treating him with utmost respect.
10:42This could be a free ball if it runs.
10:44Hang on to the floor.
10:46Back.
10:56Just have a look at that, Ronnie.
10:58Can we bring it up, Marcel, please?
11:03Yeah, I think you can just get past the blue.
11:06Yeah, just a fraction towards you, yeah.
11:10That looks good.
11:11Yeah.
11:14Everybody thinks it looks good.
11:22Except Ronnie.
11:26Yeah.
11:27Okay.
11:31Better hit it this time, because remember,
11:33if you can clearly see a ball, if you don't hit it in three attempts,
11:37you can forfeit the frame.
11:39In that time, much too thick.
11:42So, here's a chance now for Pang Junsu.
11:47The red closest to the cue ball will be the easier pot.
11:50He's got the one to this left corner, bring him on the black, but that's missable.
11:59A little less danger in playing this one.
12:01One.
12:14One.
12:16Yeah.
12:16Well, the last thing he needed was to kiss the round full ball.
12:20There is a possible cut on green or yellow, or he can just nestle up behind the brown.
12:25Yeah, look, ball.
12:34He decided he was pointless playing the snooker.
12:41I honestly don't know why, because the reds are spread.
12:44It would have been a difficult snooker.
12:48Well, not to get out of, but every chance your opponent leaving a pot on.
13:06Anyway, here's another chance.
13:09Red to the right corner.
13:10Don't have to do much with the cue ball.
13:14If he pots it, he'd be on the black to the opposite corner.
13:20Got to fully commit to this.
13:31And didn't.
13:37Quite strange, isn't it?
13:38He came out really looking as though he was going to enjoy himself.
13:42And yet, every time he's had a long shot, I mean, he's just tried to play as a shot for nothing.
13:53One.
13:53And now Ronnie, without having to do anything, he's in amongst the balls.
14:04Yeah, he's been extremely patient, hasn't he, in this opening frame, Ronnie?
14:09Hasn't taken any liberties, gone for any very high tariff shots.
14:15He's played this frame, it's almost like it's the very first frame, and it's a good thing to do.
14:24He's waited for the mistake, and now he's ready to pounce.
14:3915.
14:4616.
14:46And in this situation, John, I mean, look at the Reds, there's nobody better.
15:08And the great Ronnie O'Sullivan, cube ball control.
15:1224.
15:13And around pink and black is just, well, sublime.
15:18Yeah, and as you say, he played quite a few safety shots, didn't chance his arm.
15:3132.
15:32Treated the game, if you like, with respect.
15:36But now this is where he's, it's his absolute best.
15:41Around the black spot area, little stun screws, it makes it look so easy.
15:4839.
15:5340.
16:08Well, there's a tournament shot time, Ronnie O'Sullivan, 17 seconds.
16:12Luca Brissell 19, Xiao Xin Tong 19, Trump 21.
16:23All still in the tournament.
16:25What a wonderful world championships already.
16:31Not even at the halfway stage yet.
16:3355.
16:37And the way this man is playing.
16:4056.
16:41Well, he's going to be the one to beat, there's no doubt about it.
16:44Himself and Trump have played the best.
16:5363.
16:54Still not played his best.
16:58But still.
17:0164.
17:01Played to a very, very high quality.
17:03And another break, double, quick fashion.
17:08Excellent stuff.
17:1570.
17:2071.
17:20First player ever to make over 1,000 century breaks.
17:26In his career.
17:33There's two other players who've done that achievement.
17:36That was John Higgins and Judd Trump.
17:3978.
17:40Need a good shot to keep this going.
17:4479.
17:46No, he didn't get high enough on the black, so how does he get on this last red?
17:52Just like that.
17:53Just like that.
17:55Wonderful.
17:58That was quality.
18:00Digging into the cue ball.
18:0387.
18:04That would be great to just finish on a century.
18:10Well, decided to play for the yellow in the middle.
18:17He's just overrun it slightly.
18:19Twitched in between.
18:2093.
18:28Oh, wonderful.
18:29Well, just going to hit it slightly, so we're going to see another.
18:34Hopefully tremendous shot.
18:37Oh, but not quite.
18:38No century.
18:40But that's it.
18:41In double-print time, Ronnie O'Sullivan are very good to the winner.
18:47Well, they'd be very disappointed.
18:48But at least he played Ronnie O'Sullivan on the big stage.
18:51Ronnie O'Sullivan marches through to the quarter-final.
18:56He wins by 13 frames to four.
18:58Well, that was quick, wasn't he?
19:14He wins by 13 frames to four.
19:15He wins by 13 frames to four.
19:16He wins by 13 frames to four.
19:16Right.
19:18There's enough time for a pee and a pint and a glass of wine.
19:22See you back in here, eight o'clock sharp.
19:26Right.
19:27Hang on.
19:29Taylor.
19:31White.
19:32Doherty.
19:32Three of you, me, big break.
19:35Eight o'clock.
19:36Three of you, Mr.
19:41Everybody.
19:42Thanks, голова.
19:43Okay.
19:45One, two, three.
19:46Go ahead.
19:46You put on the little card, top.
19:47Go ahead.
19:48UNDEL.
19:49Hey.
19:50Good candidate.
19:51Go ahead.
19:52One, two, one.
