On Monday, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) spoke about the impact of tariffs on farmers.
Transcript
00:00What did you hear back home over the recess about tariffs and the impact on your constituents?
00:09Well, I'm a farmer and I represent an agricultural area district.
00:14We depend on exports a lot, so there's certainly some concern being expressed to me
00:19by people in the agricultural industry about potential impacts of what's going on.
00:26What kind of impacts?
00:27You know, retaliatory actions that could be taken by other countries.
00:33We've experienced that in the past, and people are just concerned that could be happening again.
00:38But, you know, there's nothing certain right now, so it's just an expression of what could possibly be coming.
00:47How fearful are people about losing their businesses?
00:51Well, there's a lot of challenges in a country right now, as you probably know,
00:56and so this is just one more thing that makes agriculture and farming more or less profitable.
01:04So that's certainly a lot of concern.
01:07Did the president pull back from these completely, do you think?
01:09Well, what we've been saying all along, what I've been saying when I hear people,
01:13we'd love to have a level playing field with our trading partners.
01:18And so if this can get us there, you know, people are supportive of the end goal.
01:22Just how we go about it is what a lot of questions about that.
01:26Appreciate your time.
