00:00Hey everyone, I wanted to bring a devotion to you that I feel is relevant to the times
00:07in which we are living.
00:09As you know, we are in a climate that is very restless, a lot of hate, strife, fear, tension,
00:20a lot of anxiety, and a lot of division.
00:24My dad would say if he were alive that this is the church's greatest hour.
00:32It's up to us to stand up and to speak life and to speak truth in love
00:39and to bring peace into this chaotic cycle that is in America and in the world.
00:46We have a responsibility as Christians to speak life into the atmosphere,
00:56to speak peace to situations, and to bring hope to the hopeless.
01:05And I wanted to read a scripture here.
01:09It's Colossians, I believe it's 4.6, but let me just double check.
01:13Colossians 4.6.
01:14Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt,
01:21so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
01:25Boy, I need to put that on my bathroom mirror, in my car, everywhere.
01:30So I'm always reminded so I will know how to answer each person.
01:36Proverbs 18.21 says,
01:38Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
01:40and those who love it will eat its fruit.
01:43Well, I wanted to talk about someone who I've been studying,
01:48and she's inspired me.
01:50Her name is Abigail.
01:52How many of you know about Abigail?
01:55So it's Abigail, David, and Nabal.
01:58This is who is in the story in 1 Samuel 25.
02:01And I'm going to paraphrase it because it's a long, long chapter.
02:10And so I'm going to paraphrase the beginning of it.
02:12It talks about her husband, Nabal, who was very harsh in his dealings,
02:18mean-spirited, was very, very difficult to work with.
02:22Because it's in the scripture, and then you hear later on the servant talking about how difficult
02:27he is to work with, to talk to.
02:30But it describes, but the word describes Abigail as an intelligent and beautiful woman.
02:39But yet her husband was a beast.
02:41He was just vicious.
02:42What a mix there.
02:44So if you're reading 1 Samuel 25, you'll see that David and his men had been out in the fields
02:53on journeying and doing what they did back in those days.
02:58And Nabal's shepherds, many of them were herding sheep.
03:02And David and his men protected them.
03:05They made sure they were okay.
03:07Well, they heard that, in verse 4, it says, while David was in the wilderness, he heard
03:13that Nabal was shearing sheep.
03:15So he sent his young men to go to Nabal at Carmel and greet him in my name, say to him, long
03:20life to you, good health.
03:22Like, treat him with kindness.
03:24And he wanted to see if he would give him something, give him and his men some things.
03:29Um, but Nabal answered, of course, as he's a harsh man, in verse 10, who is this, David?
03:39Who is the son of Jesse?
03:41He said, why should I take my bread and water and the meat I have slaughtered for my shares
03:45and give it to men coming from who knows where?
03:49That's how he responded.
03:50So the men went back to David, told him what he said, and David was not happy.
03:56And he told his men, strap on your sword.
03:59We're going to go take care of this little man.
04:01So 400 of David's men went with him and they took off to go take care of Nabal.
04:10Well, um, verse 14, one of the servants ran to Abigail and said, um, David, um, is coming.
04:20He, he sent some men to Nabal and our Lord Nabal was very rude and hateful.
04:27And so David is going to come and take care of Nabal.
04:30And all of us were all in trouble.
04:33Um, he said, night and day, they were a wall, a wall around us the whole time while we were
04:38hurting our sheep.
04:39He was giving the story of the account, how they protected us.
04:43And he said, now think it over and see what you can do.
04:45Telling Abigail, because disaster is coming to this household is coming to our master
04:51and this whole household.
04:53He is such a wicked man that no one can talk to him.
04:55Even the servant later on in scripture says he's so difficult.
04:59We can't, we can't reason with him.
05:02So number one, what did Abigail do in verse 18?
05:06Abigail acted quickly, but in another version, I believe it's, uh, the amplified version.
05:11And it says out, um, she was discerning, she was able to discern the desperate time in
05:17which she was in it.
05:18She had to jump into action immediately.
05:20So she acted quickly, discern, acted quickly.
05:24And she took these loaves of bread, wine, she roasted grain, uh, hundreds of cakes of
05:31figs and raisins and loaded them on the donkeys, had her servants go on before him.
05:35And then it says that she took off, but she did not even tell her husband what she was
05:42doing.
05:43She knew she had to intercede on behalf for the entire household where they were all going
05:49to be destroyed.
05:50So when she saw David in verse 23, she quickly got off her donkey and bowed before David.
05:57She fell at his feet and said, pardon your servant, my Lord, and let me speak to you.
06:01Hear what your servant has to say.
06:03But she was humble in her approach.
06:06She had humility.
06:08She said, please pay no attention, my Lord, to that wicked man, Nabal, which was her husband.
06:13He is just like his name.
06:15His name means fool and folly goes with him.
06:19And now my Lord, as surely as your Lord lives and as you live, since the Lord has kept you
06:23from bloodshed and avenging yourself with your own hands.
06:26Then she moves down to 27, uh, talks about, we brought this gift to you.
06:31Verse 28, please forgive your servant's presumption.
06:35Again, humility.
06:37The Lord, your God will certainly make a lasting dynasty for my Lord because you fight the Lord's
06:42battles and no wrongdoing will be found in you as long as you live.
06:45Even though someone is pursuing you to take your life, the life of my Lord will be bound
06:52securely in a bundle of the living by your Lord, by the Lord, your God.
06:56But the lives of your enemies, he will hurl away as from the pocket of a sling.
07:01When the Lord has fulfilled, my Lord, every good thing he promised concerning him, appointing
07:05the rule over Israel.
07:05So she goes on for a little bit and he responds in verse 32, David said to Abigail, praise be
07:13the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet me.
07:17Verse 33, may you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed this
07:23day and from avenging myself with my own hands.
07:26Verse 34.
07:26Otherwise, as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel lives, who has kept me from harming
07:33you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, not one male belonging to Nabal would have
07:40been left alive by daybreak.
07:42Then David accepted from her hand in verse 35 what she had brought him and said, go home
07:47in peace.
07:48I have heard your words and granted your request.
07:51How powerful is that?
07:53So Abigail discerned the signs of the time.
07:59I've got to do something.
08:01She jumped into action immediately and then she approached David with a humility.
08:10She was humble in her approach and then she spoke words that helped to diffuse the situation.
08:19That's what we need more of in this world.
08:21We need more Abigail's to stand up, to discern the signs of the time, discern where we are.
08:27We are living.
08:28The Bible has prophesied many of the things that are going on are in the Bible.
08:33We should not fear.
08:34We need to discern the signs of the time and stay in prayer mode and read in the word of
08:38God and not get distracted by the noise.
08:41Number two, Abigail jumped into action.
08:45We need to jump into action.
08:46God, what do you want us to do?
08:48What do you want us to say?
08:49Who can we reach today?
08:52And number three, she was humble in her approach.
08:55We need to be humble with how we say the words, how we speak to other people, speak with humility.
09:04So we're not turning people off and causing people to come back at us.
09:10And some will, some will, because there's a lot of anger here, but we cannot control what others do.
09:17We can only control what we do.
09:19Abigail could not control her husband, Nabal, but she could control her actions and her words.
09:25And that's what we need.
09:27We need women who will stand up, be wise, approach things with humility.
09:32So I'm challenging all of us to stay in prayer mode, read the word of God, but to discern the times in which we are living and to be humble in our approach and to seek God.
09:51Now, what do you want us to say?
09:53What should we not say?
09:55We need more Abigails to rise up and to intercede and to intervene in a world that is lifeless and that is in need of spiritual CPR.
10:04As my dad would say, and I said earlier, this is the church's greatest hour.
10:12Let's rise up to the occasion and be Abigails for the kingdom of God.
10:18In the name of Jesus, let's speak life.
10:20Let's speak hope.
10:23Let's speak peace.
10:25Let's speak joy.
10:26Let's not let the noise, the voices in the world and even some in the religious world influence us to get our eyes off of Jesus and off of the word of God.
10:36But let's again, let's speak love, peace, hope and joy into the atmosphere and let's win souls for Jesus Christ.
10:45Let's restore the brokenhearted.
10:48Amen.
10:48Amen.
10:49Let's rise up and be Abigails for the kingdom of God.
