Great Bristol Run 2025: 9-year-old Reuben's inspiring run for Bristol charity

9-year-old Reuben and his dad Dave will be running at the Great Bristol Run to raise money for the Wallace and Gromit Grand Appeal, a charity that has made a great difference to their lives.  Rueben was born with club foot, a condition where the Achilles tendon (the large tendon at the back of the ankle) is too short and causes either or both feet to turn in and under.  The family was supported by the charity during this time, as the hospital took care of them and helped them understand exactly what the process would be. They provided Rueben with boots and a bar, operated his feet, gave him new splints to wear and plaster casts when needed and taught him the stretches he would need as he grew.  Now, Reuben and his family want to give back to the charity and help others who are less fortunate.

00:00I am Reuben and this is my dad.

00:04So I'm Dave and together we're going to be running the junior run for the Great Bristol Hospital.

00:10Yay!

00:12I'm really really excited to be able to just do our little part.

00:16Can you tell us a bit about why you chose this charity?

00:20Because I had clubfoot when I was born and it has made me better.

00:26So you want to give it money now. Yay!

00:30So we're really looking forward to supporting the hospital and we want to make a difference

00:34because it made a real difference to us to be able to go to the hospital

00:38and know that we got the support that we had all the way through.

00:41They were so caring with us and took the time to make sure that we understood

00:46exactly what we needed to go through and what the process was.

00:48We just want to be able to help others that are less fortunate than us.

00:52So my friends from Ashley Down Primary School this year have decided to help me run for two and a bit mile run.

01:04I don't know how long it is.

01:06So it's 2.5 kilometres we're doing and you've got about 15 friends with you at the moment.

01:11Family and friends that have all said they want to run with you and support you and be by your side

01:15and raise money with us. So over £500 already with two months to go.

01:21So we're really excited about what we can do.

01:23It's great to have such support and such a great family and community around us as well, isn't it?

01:29Yeah.

01:30And what has been the most enjoyable part of the experience?

01:33Raising money and the feeling when you raise the money.

01:40You have said to me how it makes you feel that the idea that we can help some other people

01:45because there were some tough times in your operation and having to go through some of the processes we've gone through.

01:51So to be able to raise money for others and to know that we're helping other people

01:54is the bit that Ruben's pointed on us being the thing that he's enjoying the most.

01:57Which is just wonderful as a dad to hear that was just wonderful as well.
