00:00Please welcome Taren Killem to our show.
00:03Good morning, good morning, good morning.
00:05Nice to see you, Taren.
00:06Congrats, Fly Eagles, Fly and what have you.
00:08My brother's a huge Eagles fan.
00:10Oh, really?
00:12Huge, huge.
00:13Since before, like, I was a football fan.
00:16And a really arbitrary one.
00:17He was like, I like green and I like birds.
00:20Okay, that was the question.
00:21How did he become a fan?
00:22Green and birds.
00:23All right, we'll take it, right?
00:24Well, you are a native Californian, so it makes sense.
00:29You live, eat, and breathe the Rams, right?
00:32Yeah, exactly.
00:33Yeah, like, and Los Angeles specifically.
00:36Like, born and raised, didn't have a team most of my life.
00:39And just kind of always vowed that I'd be all in from the ground up of
00:43whichever team we got back, be it Rams, Jaguar, whoever it was.
00:47And it just so happened that the Rams came home.
00:50So, yeah, and it's been a fun six years with them.
00:54And now we're taking our medicine.
00:57No, I know.
00:58But LA's been a weird football town.
01:01It's, you know, the Rams, the Raiders.
01:03I don't remember, like, exactly the history.
01:06But, you know, the Rams, did they start in LA?
01:09And then they went to St. Louis and then back to LA.
01:12And you were there.
01:12You were a fan.
01:13You came up as, like, you know, when the Rams had Eric Dickerson, correct?
01:17Well, so, no, I, full disclosure, probably switched allegiances.
01:22Both teams left when I was, like, 10 years old.
01:24But I think for that first decade, the team I was more aware of was the Raiders, quite honestly,
01:29because you're dealing with, like, Marcus Allen, Howie Long, Ronnie Lott, Bo Jackson, you know,
01:34and it's the Madden franchise at that point, right?
01:37But the first game I ever went to, like, I was less than a year old, was a Rams game.
01:44So I see some synchronicity in that.
01:46But for me, it was more about just, like, getting to – I love where I'm from, and I love football.
01:52And I wanted to have a home team to root for.
01:57So I kind of, like, went all in, also knowing that we were going to have, like, the most beautiful sports stadium in the world.
02:03All right, so I wanted to ask you about that, Taryn, because, you know, it was really interesting when LA all of a sudden got from zero teams to two teams,
02:09and the Chargers were playing in the soccer stadium, and the Rams were playing in the old Coliseum, which I've been to before.
02:15And it's a historic building, but quite frankly, it's kind of a dump.
02:19And then both of those teams get this brand-new, gorgeous stadium.
02:23So what is that place like?
02:24I haven't had a chance to get there yet.
02:25They had the Super Bowl there last year.
02:27It's so beautiful, like, and because I've been, like, such a hyper-loud fan the second that the Rams touched down in Los Angeles,
02:37I've sort of been – I've ingratiated myself to the team.
02:40So I got to visit while they were building the place.
02:42Like, I was there when it was just, like, a hundred-foot hole in the ground.
02:45And then I was there when it was just down to the studs.
02:48So there's so many, like, cool details that people don't even realize.
02:51The Rams locker room is in a spiral shape, like a Rams horn.
02:56Wow.
02:57The locker room is a horn.
02:59And the same thing with the Chargers.
03:01It's a lightning bolt.
03:02It's this jagged diagonal thing.
03:04So little details like that.
03:05Like, they really thought about the artistry.
03:07Driving up, it's beautiful.
03:09It's just – it's got this huge, like, beautiful wave.
03:12They tried to really, like, lean into the Southern California beach, palm tree vibe.
03:18Like, both sides of the stadium are open air, and they have these canyons with, like, palm trees and succulents.
03:23Wow.
03:24Yeah.
03:24Just a work of art.
03:25They still haven't figured out the park here.
03:28Well, anything in that area is going to be problematic when you get into an automobile.
03:33Yeah, but you have me in succulents.
03:34It wouldn't make sense if driving there was easy.
03:36Yeah, it's a breeze.
03:38So I have to ask you, the NFL pile-on, you are already on social media, you know, on Instagram, I think, is your platform of choice, espousing your take on the games.
03:50So these things synergize, your adoration, your love.
03:54So it now becomes your job to be on it, on this level.
04:02Is that a wonderful thing, or does having it as a job kind of detract from it?
04:07Very astute.
04:08Very astute.
04:09Yeah, careful what you wish for.
04:10Yeah, yeah.
04:13It's both, quite honestly.
04:16Like, coming into it, I was like, oh, what a dream.
04:18I have to be consumed by football and then, you know, create entertainment based around that, which is pretty much what I'd be doing with my free time.
04:28I love having an excuse to watch football on Sundays that literally pays the bills.
04:34It's like my wife, you know what I mean, can't argue that, like, hey, come on, can you focus up a little bit more?
04:41This is work now.
04:44That's the plus side.
04:45The bottom, the bad side, the downside is like, you know, I'm a season ticket holder at SoFi for the Rams.
04:51And anytime I go there now, the show and the producers are like, hey, maybe we can get you to get some footage while you're on the field.
04:58So when I'm at the home games rooting for my team, I want to, I want to grab a hot dog.
05:03I want to grab a whiskey.
05:04I want to sit and watch the game.
05:06So now I have these, like, work obligations in my recreational time.
05:10And that's where I'm like, hold on, hold on, hold on.
05:13I didn't sign up for this part.
05:14Well, let me ask you.
05:16So you're married to Colby Smulders, who is, you know, we adore her from the Marvel Universe and How I Met Your Mother and so on and so forth.
05:23This is the classic conundrum that I think is probably, you know, you talk about a football widow, though there are a tremendous amount of women who are absolutely into football as well.
05:30Which dynamic exists in your home?
05:33Yeah, she is.
05:34She's the widowiest widow of all time.
05:36Like, I brought her to the NFC conference championship going like, this will do it.
05:44Yeah.
05:44We are going to beat the Niners in SoFi, go to the Super Bowl.
05:48She's going to feel the energy.
05:49She's going to be bitten by the bug.
05:50And I was sort of watching her, and she's the best.
05:54So, of course, she's supportive while there.
05:57We get in the car, and I'm, like, still sweating.
06:00My face is bright red.
06:02I've lost my voice.
06:04And I go, I turned over to her.
06:06And I was, like, so what did you think?
06:11How was it?
06:12And she just looks over so earnestly and goes, I really like that you like it.
06:19Yes, yes, yes, yes.
06:22There you go.
06:23Oh, I've heard that.
06:24I've heard that in my own life.
06:25And, you know, exactly.
06:26And therein is the love.
06:29That is the love, right?
06:30It's the whole thing.
06:31So, very cool.
06:32So, the show itself is, for people who don't know, it's sort of, to me, it seems like TalkSoup meets The Daily Show.
06:40This is it.
06:41Yeah, meets football.
06:43Exactly.
06:44You can kind of insert your favorite comedy show, meets football.
06:48And, like, the episode that just aired yesterday, we did a whole sort of thesis on how we can make our show more accessible to non-football fans.
06:56And by the end of it, kind of own up to the fact that if you don't love football, you might miss a lot of the references.
07:02But we're the first comedy show produced by NFL Films.
07:07Like, we are an NFL company-endorsed comedy show, which I honestly thought would come with a lot more pitfalls.
07:16I thought for sure.
07:18You've got to have it.
07:18I mean, you have access to those.
07:19You can't say this.
07:20You can't do that.
07:21Yeah.
07:22And so far, not really.
07:24Like, it's pretty shocking.
07:25And then on top of that, like, we have access to all of their archival footage, not from just this season, from every season.
07:32That's amazing.
07:33Oh, that is, that's the goldmine.
07:35Yeah.
07:36It is.
07:36It's overwhelming.
07:37Like, that's the thing that we're still, like, you know, chipping at this huge, giant monolith going, like, how do we best use this?
07:44Because.
07:45Yeah.
07:45And you did.
07:46But it is a goldmine.
07:48As a matter of fact, I was watching the episode, and you started with, you had a whole montage of players letting the ball bounce off of their helmet.
07:55And it started with, oh, who'd he call it?
07:58Oh, dropped that pass.
08:01It was just thrown right to him.
08:02He should have had a touchdown.
08:03Who was it?
08:04This past Sunday.
08:06Oh, it was Tyler Lockett.
08:07Tyler Lockett dropped a touchdown pass.
08:10Yes, yes, yes, yes.
08:10So that's what kicked it all off.
08:12And then, I mean, it went to, like, because I, listen, I'm a football fan my entire life.
08:17I loved waking up on Saturday morning and watching Inside the NFL.
08:21And that was, like, you know, and then you might get a kick out of this.
08:25My daughter has a friend.
08:26She's in high school.
08:27And I found out that her last name is Facenda.
08:31And I go, hang on a second.
08:33Yeah.
08:33Well, NFL Films was around here.
08:35Yeah.
08:36And, like, that's her great-grandfather.
08:38Wow.
08:38And I was like, oh, my, yeah.
08:39Can you please pass me your phone?
08:41Oh, Jesus.
08:42Yes.
08:44The frozen peas.
08:45Yes.
08:45So I really do appreciate that, that it's not only the current stuff, but that you have
08:50access and that you do access all of that old stuff, you know?
08:53So, you know, maybe this stuff isn't made for people that aren't football fans, but for
08:57those of us that are, I totally appreciate that.
08:59Well, I'm not the – Preston and I are, you know, where these guys are more, you know,
09:04intensely sports-based.
09:06But I watch – I enjoy it because there are skids, there are riffs that – so if you're
09:13not connecting with every single reference, the general – it's such a general good
09:18vibe that it works.
09:19So I think you're on track.
09:20Oh, I appreciate that.
09:20I think you're on track.
09:21Yeah.
09:22That's so kind.
09:22Yeah.
09:23I mean, you know, the sort of – the theme of the show more than anything is just passionate
09:28fandom, so hopefully that's an entry point, no matter if you're a passionate fan about
09:34football or musical theater.
09:36We literally – the first sketch of our show this past week was a Sondheim parody.
09:41Right.
09:41Yeah.
09:42It speaks to sort of the duality, the kind of like a grab bag of interest that I have.
09:48You know, I love football.
09:50I'm diehard.
09:50I love comedy.
09:51That's the huge passion of mine.
09:53But I also love musical theater and all things Marvel and comic books, you know, so we just
09:59try to make it a party more than anything else.
10:01Well, let me ask you because sports – you know, we have our sister station, our sports
10:05station.
10:07They have to walk a fine line because you also have to be – it's the very nature of the
10:11beast that you have to be critical.
10:12You have to be doing postmortems and assessing and, you know, calling people to task.
10:17So you have to walk that line because you want to be inviting to all those potential athletes
10:22you might want to get on the show, but you also have to kind of play to the crowd that
10:26expects that.
10:27What was –
10:28Exactly right.
10:28I mean, it's so true.
10:30And honestly, like, we have some pretty great writers.
10:35You know, Bennett Weber has written for the ESPYs and the NFL Honors for years now and did
10:41all of Riggle's picks on Fox.
10:44You know, really smart, funny guy.
10:45Sarah Tiana, like, there is no more diehard sports fan that I've ever met in my life.
10:50And she's just the funniest person ever.
10:53So that – they're pretty well calibrated to that.
10:57It's then offering yourself up and comedy, which is subjective to that sports culture.
11:05Yeah, yeah.
11:06Like, can sting, but it's also great because we're all sports fans, so we get it.
11:13You know what I mean?
11:14Like, and, yeah, and, you know, hold us to task in terms of, like, if we're going to
11:20make fun of the Jets fans, you better believe they're bringing out all their receipts.
11:25Right, right, right, right.
11:26But, you know, players – I think a lot of players do have a sense of humor about, you
11:30know, things that happen within the game.
11:32And I don't know if you've caught any of Jason Kelsey and Travis Kelsey's podcast at all.
11:36Yes.
11:37I mean, so two weeks –
11:39They're the funniest.
11:39And they're great.
11:40And they actually have a great sense of humor about, you know, the game that they played
11:45the previous week.
11:46And, you know, in two weeks in a row, you know, Jason took a hard hit against the Lions.
11:50And then the following week, Travis took a hard hit against the Chargers.
11:54And the way that they were busting each other's chops and really, you know, took it like a
11:58champ as far as the comedy is concerned, I thought was really, really great.
12:02It's awesome.
12:02I mean, I've never met Jason, but Travis, I've done a charity that happens in Kansas
12:07City for – it's the Big Slick.
12:10So it's Stone Street and Rob Riggle and Koechner and Sudeikis and Paul Rudd.
12:14They do this big charity for Children's Mercy Hospital, which is so fun and, like, the best
12:20weekend ever.
12:21And Travis has been there a few times.
12:23And he is – it's not fair, but he's, like, funnier than most comedians.
12:27And he's really, like – he's the most charismatic 6'6", 250-pound person I've ever met in my
12:37life.
12:37So, Taren, you're, you know, quite familiar with the fans here in Philadelphia.
12:41And the only thing this time of year that could overshadow an undefeated record in the
12:48NFL is the fact that the Phillies are in the World Series right now.
12:52It is the only thing that could overshadow things right now.
12:55It is unbelievable here right now.
12:57Even our soccer team, our professional soccer team, is going to the finals.
13:00In L.A.?
13:00Yeah.
13:01In L.A.
13:02Amazing.
13:02It is insane here.
13:04What do you think about –
13:06What's in the water?
13:07What's in the water, I should say?
13:08The water.
13:09In the water.
13:10The water, yeah.
13:11Do you want to take a stab at what you think the Eagles are going to do for the remainder
13:15of the season?
13:16Oh, I honestly, like, the way that they're playing – because there was a jinx that, like,
13:24the NFL social media put up.
13:25They're like, what previous undefeated teams, you know, how did they do in the postseason?
13:32You know, and it shows, like, back to 2018, which teams were 7-0, 8-0, and then where
13:37they ended up.
13:38But the way that the Eagles are playing, I, you know, I think that I'd be shocked if
13:44they're – I mean, I would put all money in for certainly conference finals.
13:48They're going to the NFC finals, and it'll be an upset if they're not in the bowl.
13:53They're just – there's just such – A.J. – the way that A.J. is playing, the entire
13:58defense surrounds A.J. Brown, and he still catches these passes from Jalen effortlessly.
14:04Taryn, in 2009, the Phils were in the World Series against the Yankees, and they played
14:08a home game, and then across the street, the Eagles played the Giants.
14:13So it was two New York versus Philly games in South Philly the same night, tonight, game
14:18five in South Philly.
14:19Fortunately for us who are going to the game, the Eagles are in Houston, so we don't have
14:23to deal with 70,000 other people, you know, parking there.
14:25But it is a really magical time here in Philly.
14:28Do you – and speaking of the World Series, do you have any thoughts about how that's
14:31going so far?
14:33You know, Houston's – Houston's bad karma, I think, is to – you know, despite no hitters – no
14:39hitters last night aside, I think the Phillies take it for sure, and I'm certainly rooting
14:45for the Phillies, because Chris Peasy is our showrunner, huge Philly guy, Philly sports
14:54through and through, and I'm not as baseball knowledgeable, but he came in furious, and I
15:01guess that the previous game that Houston won, he's like, watch the pitcher.
15:05He's rubbing his fingers all over his uniform.
15:11That cheater moniker, man, the Astros are going to be carrying that around for the rest
15:15of days, and in large part, it's deserved, you know?
15:19Yeah, 100%.
15:20Yeah, for a reason.
15:22Do you think – we've talked about this often, because you have a lot of transplants
15:24out in L.A., obviously, and, you know, so the perception's always been sort of like
15:30a ragtag, you know, fan base, and we know there's actually a lot of Philly fans out there,
15:35Adam McKay and Adam Goldberg and a lot of, you know, people from this area.
15:39Do you encounter, you know, outside of it and just, you know, outside of just your
15:43football stuff, just as you're doing your comedy stuff, a lot of Philly fans out there?
15:49A hundred percent, yeah.
15:50Rob McElhinney is a huge Philadelphia fan.
15:55Yeah, I mean, you said it perfectly.
15:57L.A. is such a transplant city.
15:59California is also such a massive state, too, you know what I mean?
16:02So there's a lot of space for people to come in.
16:06You know, the Rams just got their butts handed to them once again by San Francisco.
16:11But San Francisco is a dynasty California team.
16:14So, like, that's not as shocking to me.
16:17Dallas always shows up really well, you know, at home games out here for us.
16:22And like I said, you know, the Philly presence is everywhere.
16:26Peasy, one of our riders, Pat, he called in sick this week, air quotes.
16:33Called in sick, huh?
16:34Yeah.
16:35Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:37Yeah, you're hip to that.
16:39I mean, but I love that.
16:40It's an identity of this city that I love.
16:45Yeah.
16:45I wouldn't change for anything because you get that melting pot of point of views, histories,
16:51backgrounds, fandom.
16:52Yeah.
16:53And I just think it makes for more interesting conversation, you know?
16:56Who wants homogeny?
16:58No, I agree.
16:58Well, there's plenty of interesting conversation that's going on in the NFL pylon.
17:02You can find it on Prime Video Wednesdays at 7 p.m.
17:04or when the new episodes come on board.
17:07So good luck with everything, Taryn.
17:08It looks like you're having fun doing it, so I'm sure people are going to love it.
17:11Thank you so much.
17:12I appreciate you guys.
17:13Thank you for having me.
17:14And tell your wife we love her.
17:15Yes.
17:15We love her.
17:16We love her.
17:16All right, Taryn Killam, guys.
17:17Yeah.
17:17Yeah.
17:18Yeah.
17:18Yeah.
17:18Yeah.
17:18Yeah.
17:19Yeah.
17:19Yeah.
17:20Yeah.
17:20Yeah.
17:20Yeah.
17:21Yeah.
17:21Yeah.
17:21Yeah.
17:21Yeah.
17:22Yeah.
17:23Yeah.
17:23Yeah.
17:25Yeah.
17:25Yeah.
17:25Yeah.
17:25Yeah.
17:26Yeah.
17:27Yeah.
17:27Yeah.
17:27Yeah.
17:29Yeah.
17:29Yeah.
