00:00Bridgetown, May 3rd, 1999 The crowd at Kingston Oval witnessed a betting
00:05exhibition for the ages as Shiv Narayan Chandra Paul brought up his median odious century
00:11in style. 109 runs of 134 balls, spanning 166 minutes at the crease, peppering the boundary
00:18with 15 crisp fours and one towering sick. The left-hander known for his crabby stance
00:24but gritty temperament picked the perfect occasion to reach the milestone. Interestingly,
00:29this was very same ground where Shiv Narayan Chandra Paul had raised his bet for his first
00:34test-hander just five weeks earlier. Talk about making Bridgetown your own backyard.
00:39Chandra Paul was not alone in the carnage. He stitched together a massive 200-run opening
00:45stand with fellow opener Stuart Williams, laying the perfect platforms and completely outclassing
00:51the Indian bowling attack. The dude chased down the target without losing a single wicket,
00:56sending India a humulating 10 wicket defeat. So sit back and socks in this Caribbean classic.
01:01Let's relive Shiv Narayan Chandra Paul's brilliant innings, a mix of great flair and sheer dominance.
01:07Let's watch the Tiger from Guyana in full flow.
01:23Not a bad way to start. Just onto the front foot and easing it through the covers. It might go the whole distance.
01:28But Chandra Paul really struggled a wee bit in St. Vincent already looks back to his fist.
01:36Well, it's as if St. Vincent just did not happen. First ball and beautifully timed through the gap.
01:46Three men saving the single on the offside. And Chandra Paul finding the gap without a problem in the world.
02:01On the legs of Chandra Paul. He loves it there.
02:04Robin Singh did some good work there. Now, will the umpires want to have another look at this one?
02:17The Pez. They will.
02:22Always pretty difficult running in towards that wall.
02:25I think he's pretty safe there. His foot was not touching the ball while his hand was on the wall,
02:38so he's pretty safe.
02:42Current run rate will be good enough for the West Indies to get home if they can maintain that.
02:48We need to conserve wickets at the start of the innings.
02:55And they need to put the bad ball away like that. Beautiful shot, square cut from Chandra Paul.
03:07Well, we didn't see too many of those signs going up earlier on.
03:13But Chandra Paul has given them reason to lift them up.
03:19Beautifully timed again.
03:21Piercing that offside field without any bother at all.
03:25It just looks as if he's having a few problems with that arm and fell awkwardly when trying to take a catch.
03:37And as we were waiting for the ball to come back there, it was noticeable that
03:42he was just flexing it and grimacing a wee bit.
03:46So he's not 100% comfortable.
03:48He really has hit that very hard.
03:58Not a usual shot from Chandra Paul, the sweep.
04:02But certainly in the past month or so, we've seen him develop strokes we haven't seen from him before.
04:06But it looks as if he's decided he's not going to allow Kumble to settle down into any sort of rhythm.
04:12Straight away after him and he got the placement right on this occasion.
04:16There's two men outside the circle.
04:22So the batsman can really attack Kumble if they want to.
04:25That's beautifully taken down the leg side.
04:39Thought he heard something and therefore he appealed but it was really a beautiful take by the keeper.
04:45This must have come off the pads because obviously there was a noise.
04:49Yes, clearly coming off the pad but a good take there by Kareem down the leg side.
04:55There's Gora Villeneuve.
05:00Found the gap.
05:02Yet again, second square cup four.
05:06Well, this shot has been really profitable for Chandra Paul right through the series.
05:11The moment he gets any sort of width, he's very quickly in position.
05:15Look at that back foot right across there.
05:17And back when he's playing that shot and again placing it extremely well.
05:25He's really blossomed into a good stroke player as the series has progressed.
05:30Good scrolling side for Villa.
05:44Oh, that's a good effort.
05:46Yeah, got his trousers dirty but stretched out.
05:49Doesn't matter how but he did his best.
05:51Not chasing a big score, target of just four runs for over.
05:57They're going along fine at the stage.
05:59And this man is batting beautifully.
06:02Again, lovely use of his feet to make that shot possible.
06:06Well, this is it.
06:17This definitely is his 50.
06:20He's got a boundary again on the onside.
06:2353 for Chandra Paul, 92 for no loss for West Indies.
06:26So really cruising along here, the West Indies, 92 for no loss and 24 overs.
06:35Chandra Paul, yet another half century.
06:38Definitely the nice height.
06:40And that single bringing up the West Indian 100.
06:49So that's a pretty comfortable equation for the West Indies to wrap up this series 3-1.
06:57The last match of what has been generally a disappointing tour, principally because of the weather.
07:06Chandra Paul going over the top.
07:07Tremendous shot by him.
07:11He really has played better and better as the series has gone on.
07:15He's played with more fluency and with more power.
07:17And that's a superb stroke.
07:19Well, the fluency has been the key and he's taken a leaf out of Brian Larder's book here.
07:23It's Larder who's decided to, a couple of times, to go after Cumbly and belt him over mid-on.
07:37Magnificent he played.
07:38He really is in the best fit form he can possibly be in.
07:43That was a magnificent stroke.
07:50133 without loss.
07:51And no one seems to be able to keep this man quiet.
08:01I can't believe he's ever played better.
08:13And as I mentioned a couple of minutes ago, the bounce of this Barbados pitch is so true.
08:23Just nice height.
08:25The ball just bounces nicely so you can play through the ball.
08:31You can trust it.
08:33You certainly couldn't trust that test match pitch here.
08:35And he's put that away as well.
08:44Has gone for six.
08:46Remarkable stroke.
08:48He's enjoying it.
08:49And so is the crowd.
08:52Well, just to watch it again and enjoy it.
08:55He just flipped this with disdain.
08:58And he's nearly hit the car that he might win.
09:05Well, he's on fire now.
09:13Our buddy thinks every ball that's balled at him is going to whack it.
09:18The Indians realize that there's nothing much they can do about it.
09:22They just seem to have lost their concentration.
09:25And the runs are coming at a rapid rate.
09:36David's very fast.
09:37Now, is he fast enough?
09:40Not quite.
09:45Well, anybody who's played in Barbados will tell you it slopes a little bit down there
09:53and the ball just races away from the fielder.
09:56He moves on to 99 with that four.
10:14Well, it's been impossible for the Indian bowlers, all of them, to stem the tide of shots at his play today.
10:20And I say again, as much as I enjoy and love Brian Larder's batting,
10:26I think he would have been hard-pressed to better Chandipal's performance.
10:32No, no, no, no, no.
10:36Don't be silly now.
10:37Don't throw it away.
10:40Momentous occasion for him.
10:42Don't throw it away.
10:43Well, this is the best shot he's played today for me.
11:09This was quality.
11:10Just let it come on.
11:11Waited for it.
11:13One run away from his first one-day international 100.
11:19This is one of the hardest runs Chandipal would have worked for in his brief career.
11:28Jadeja de Bola.
11:35The clarity looks.
11:36You'll have to wait for the umpire, but it does look like an umber edge.
11:41And the fences haven't made any difference.
11:55This has been the second 100 of importance for Shibdaraim Chandipal on this ground in the last month.
12:13He got his first test 100 in the third test match here.
12:18And he's now a single leg by.
12:25Well, what an anti-climax of umpire Lloyd Barker.
12:29So Chandipal goes back to 99.
12:33Well, I just had a feeling that Lloyd Barker, the umpire, was milking the situation for all it was worth.
12:42It made it short.
12:42Williams have been waiting on to get 100 in a while.
12:45Well, he's moved on to 74.
12:52Chandipal, 102 on the board.
12:54One moment, then the umpire signal's leg buys.
12:56Here he is now, 99.
12:59And he's got it!
12:59Shibdaraim Chandipal, his first one-day international 100, emphatically completed with a cold boundary.
13:13Well, straight in, Abiko Revilla, and straight back out.
13:30That was a comfortable catch for mid-on.
13:33It's been this kind of a day for India.
13:35I'm afraid nothing's really gone right for them.
13:38And that was a mess.
13:43And the match finishes off with a no-ball call by umpire Lloyd Barker.
13:58And here come the invading spectators.
14:04And they're going to go off with our stump cam, I'm afraid.
14:11There's a huge battle out there.
14:13And that's the reason why the association is so concerned.
14:18But the West Indies have won and won emphatically by 10 wickets to clinch a series 3-1.
14:27And there's the scramble going on.
14:30This knock was not just about runs.
14:32It was about making a statement.
14:34It marked the beginning of what would eventually become 11 glorious,
14:38odious centuries in Chandrapal's illustratious career.
14:42Shiv Narayan Chandrapal, one of the most unorthodox, yet remarkably effective batters
14:48the game has seen, was instantly recognizable for his crab-like stance, almost square onto the baller,
14:54which defied traditional technique but allowed him incredible visions and timing.
14:59This unorthodox approach helped him read the ball earlier and adjust masterfully.
15:05Whether it was facing raw pace or cunning spin, what he lacked in flamboyance,
15:09he more than made up for with grit, determination and consistency.
15:14In Wanda Internationals, Chandrapal played 268 matches, scoring 8,778 runs at an impressive
15:22average of 41.60, including 11 centuries and 59 fifties, with a high score of 150.
15:30He cracked 722 fours and 85 sixes in ODIs, often playing the role of the anchorman,
15:37but never shy of accelerating when the moment called.
15:40In Listic Cricket, which includes ODIs and domestic one-day matches, he featured in 423 games,
15:47piling up a whopping 13,439 runs at an average of 41.99 with 13 centuries and 98 fifties.
15:56His top score was 150. These stats are a testament to his longevity, class and ability to adapt
16:03across formats, conditions and bowling attacks. Chandrapal may not have always stolen the limelight,
16:10but his presence was rock solid. His contribution immense and his technique, though unorthodox,
16:16was uniquely his own and highly effective.
