Hey guys, it's Calm Down here at the Children's Hospital of Michigan, Troy.
00:09
I'm here with Dr. Katie Hebert, and we're here to talk about firework safety for the 4th of July,
00:14
and I guess any holiday coming up during the summertime.
00:16
So, first of all, you must see a lot of kids come in with all sorts of burns.
00:20
Tell me some of the stuff you've seen.
00:22
Sure, we see a lot of firework injuries every year, mostly burns, because these can get very hot.
00:26
Also, some blast injuries, because they're pretty explosive.
00:30
So, mostly hand injuries and lots of burns.
00:32
Yeah, trauma and whatnot to hands, extremities.
00:36
Yep, extremities, and then face, eyes, things like that.
00:39
And people think sometimes, like, you know, sparklers, these things are just great.
00:42
We'll just, you know, throw them around at everybody, but they burn at 1,800 degrees.
00:47
1,800 degrees, and I can actually tell you I burned myself with one when I was about 10
00:50
and sustained a good second-degree burn to my arms, so I can speak to how hot they are.
00:54
Yeah.
00:54
I learned the hard way.
00:55
Now, I see that almost 9,000 injuries happen every single year around fireworks time.
01:00
So, you must see these things come in all the time.
01:02
We see them a lot.
01:03
Once it gets warm outside, people start playing with them.
01:05
It's not just the 4th of July weekend, unfortunately.
01:07
I'm sure people are hearing them go off in their neighborhoods already,
01:10
because people buy them at the stores and start setting them off in their driveways.
01:12
So, we see quite a few.
01:13
Yeah, and I guess that going to, like, some sort of community park or something
01:17
to see a fireworks display is probably better than going to your buddy Bob's house.
01:20
The safest thing is definitely to go to an approved fireworks show and not set them off.
01:25
Now, you guys also have a really cool service here called Panda One.
01:28
Explain to everybody what that's all about.
01:29
Pandas are pediatric advanced transport teams.
01:32
So, they are specialty-trained nurses and transport techs who can take sick kids
01:37
from outside hospitals or here at Children's Hospital of Troy downtown.
01:41
Now, earlier today, Elise actually went to a fireworks display store,
01:45
and she picked up some of these fireworks.
01:47
And, I mean, some of these things, they're, in all essence, kids' toys with wicks.
01:53
They're actually branded at the store as on a kid's wall.
01:56
So, these are for kids, which is crazy because they're all explosive.
01:59
I mean, this is like, you know, a hand grenade.
02:01
I didn't have these things when I was a kid.
02:03
I got the Normandy landing craft.
02:06
I mean, you know, a 5-year-old boy sees this, and it's like, you know,
02:09
let's invade something, and they light it up, and next thing you know...
02:13
Their hand is seriously injured.
02:15
And these are the ones that really go crazy.
02:17
Look at this.
02:17
This is like some sort of a frog or something, and they burn up.
02:21
And they look very tempting for little kids.
02:24
And then we got these things like these rockets that actually go up in the air.
02:27
These things can be really dangerous because all it takes is one thing falling the wrong way.
02:31
Next thing you know, they've got a rocket coming right at you.
02:33
Mm-hmm, or things catching on fire if it goes the wrong direction, or if they don't go off the first time.
02:37
We see people going to check, like, why isn't it going off?
02:40
And then it goes off as they get close to it and sustain injuries.
02:43
Or if it's dry for a long time and it lands on top of your roof, next thing you know, you've got a fire going or something.
02:47
Mm-hmm.
02:48
And check this one out.
02:49
This is like the big neon wheel.
02:51
I'm not exactly sure what it does, but I'm imagining it spins and sparks fly everywhere, and everybody has a great time.
02:57
Yeah, it sounds like everyone's getting burned.
02:59
You're coming to spend the afternoon with me having a great time.
03:01
Yeah, if you're too close getting burned, it's not a good idea.
03:04
So, yeah, just be careful with this stuff.
03:05
And like we said before, probably approved fireworks, you know, exhibits are probably the best way to go.
03:11
The safest way, and they're going to be the most fun.
03:13
Those fireworks are great.
03:14
You're not going to get those big displays in your backyard.
03:19
Always purchase fireworks from reputable sellers and read and follow label directions.
03:23
Light only one firework at a time.
03:24
Never throw or point fireworks at other people.
03:28
Never give fireworks to small children.
03:31
Always have a bucket of water handy to extinguish anything that may have accidentally become ignited.
03:35
Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water, then depositing them into a trash can.
