00:00Hey guys, it's Calm Down here at the Children's Hospital of Michigan, Troy.

00:09I'm here with Dr. Katie Hebert, and we're here to talk about firework safety for the 4th of July,

00:14and I guess any holiday coming up during the summertime.

00:16So, first of all, you must see a lot of kids come in with all sorts of burns.

00:20Tell me some of the stuff you've seen.

00:22Sure, we see a lot of firework injuries every year, mostly burns, because these can get very hot.

00:26Also, some blast injuries, because they're pretty explosive.

00:30So, mostly hand injuries and lots of burns.

00:32Yeah, trauma and whatnot to hands, extremities.

00:36Yep, extremities, and then face, eyes, things like that.

00:39And people think sometimes, like, you know, sparklers, these things are just great.

00:42We'll just, you know, throw them around at everybody, but they burn at 1,800 degrees.

00:471,800 degrees, and I can actually tell you I burned myself with one when I was about 10

00:50and sustained a good second-degree burn to my arms, so I can speak to how hot they are.

00:54Yeah.

00:54I learned the hard way.

00:55Now, I see that almost 9,000 injuries happen every single year around fireworks time.

01:00So, you must see these things come in all the time.

01:02We see them a lot.

01:03Once it gets warm outside, people start playing with them.

01:05It's not just the 4th of July weekend, unfortunately.

01:07I'm sure people are hearing them go off in their neighborhoods already,

01:10because people buy them at the stores and start setting them off in their driveways.

01:12So, we see quite a few.

01:13Yeah, and I guess that going to, like, some sort of community park or something

01:17to see a fireworks display is probably better than going to your buddy Bob's house.

01:20The safest thing is definitely to go to an approved fireworks show and not set them off.

01:25Now, you guys also have a really cool service here called Panda One.

01:28Explain to everybody what that's all about.

01:29Pandas are pediatric advanced transport teams.

01:32So, they are specialty-trained nurses and transport techs who can take sick kids

01:37from outside hospitals or here at Children's Hospital of Troy downtown.

01:41Now, earlier today, Elise actually went to a fireworks display store,

01:45and she picked up some of these fireworks.

01:47And, I mean, some of these things, they're, in all essence, kids' toys with wicks.

01:53They're actually branded at the store as on a kid's wall.

01:56So, these are for kids, which is crazy because they're all explosive.

01:59I mean, this is like, you know, a hand grenade.

02:01I didn't have these things when I was a kid.

02:03I got the Normandy landing craft.

02:06I mean, you know, a 5-year-old boy sees this, and it's like, you know,

02:09let's invade something, and they light it up, and next thing you know...

02:13Their hand is seriously injured.

02:15And these are the ones that really go crazy.

02:17Look at this.

02:17This is like some sort of a frog or something, and they burn up.

02:21And they look very tempting for little kids.

02:24And then we got these things like these rockets that actually go up in the air.

02:27These things can be really dangerous because all it takes is one thing falling the wrong way.

02:31Next thing you know, they've got a rocket coming right at you.

02:33Mm-hmm, or things catching on fire if it goes the wrong direction, or if they don't go off the first time.

02:37We see people going to check, like, why isn't it going off?

02:40And then it goes off as they get close to it and sustain injuries.

02:43Or if it's dry for a long time and it lands on top of your roof, next thing you know, you've got a fire going or something.

02:47Mm-hmm.

02:48And check this one out.

02:49This is like the big neon wheel.

02:51I'm not exactly sure what it does, but I'm imagining it spins and sparks fly everywhere, and everybody has a great time.

02:57Yeah, it sounds like everyone's getting burned.

02:59You're coming to spend the afternoon with me having a great time.

03:01Yeah, if you're too close getting burned, it's not a good idea.

03:04So, yeah, just be careful with this stuff.

03:05And like we said before, probably approved fireworks, you know, exhibits are probably the best way to go.

03:11The safest way, and they're going to be the most fun.

03:13Those fireworks are great.

03:14You're not going to get those big displays in your backyard.

03:19Always purchase fireworks from reputable sellers and read and follow label directions.

03:23Light only one firework at a time.

03:24Never throw or point fireworks at other people.

03:28Never give fireworks to small children.

03:31Always have a bucket of water handy to extinguish anything that may have accidentally become ignited.

03:35Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water, then depositing them into a trash can.
