When working 12 to 14 hour days aboard the International Space Station,
00:05
caffeine is, well, a must for many astronauts.
00:08
On average, an astronaut may consume about 100 milligrams of caffeine per day.
00:12
That's equivalent to one cup of coffee, two cups of tea, or about one can of a typical energy drink.
00:17
But in space, they can't just pour a cup of joe.
00:20
To get their morning brew, astronauts typically sip from a plastic pouch through a straw.
00:25
However, astronaut Don Pettit wanted the comforting feeling of sipping from a mug in his hand.
00:30
So he invented another way, the zero-gravity cup, also known as the space cup.
00:35
The cup relies on surface tension and the laws of physics to keep the liquid in place, enabling the drinker to take spill-free sips.
00:42
Just how does the space cup work? In microgravity liquids will form in globs, or bubbles.
00:47
So to keep coffee from floating away, the space cup's specially designed shape ensures that as crew members sip,
00:53
the liquid flows through an angled channel, creating an experience like drinking from a mug on Earth.
00:58
But there's a wrinkle, getting the water for their brew.
01:01
Aboard the space station, crew members actually need to turn yesterday's coffee into today's coffee.
01:07
They use a water dispensing unit that takes recycled liquids and the moisture gathered from the air
01:11
to provide hot, potable water for the crew.
01:14
Then they will take a plastic pouch load of the freeze-dried coffee grounds,
01:17
connect it to the unit, and fill the pouch with hot water.
01:20
From there, crew members can sip their fresh java.
01:23
Now one big question looms for the future.
01:25
Exactly how much coffee would be enough to sustain a mission to Mars?
01:30
Fake air!
01:33
Time for water.
01:34
We need this here.
01:35
Just for two years.
01:36
Once again, we always can't wait till half.
01:37
Thank you for all the time.
01:38
The moon went close.
01:39
You can see that for only half past 25 tous,
01:41
or maybe mediums in the top compared to half past 25.
01:43
금 give it to the ship and howling that gets packed.
01:44
Could we add them?
01:46
Try labour to getgebious.
01:48
To get into the ship.
01:50
Some people are left kept quiet and paused virtually now.
01:52
Let them be known too quickly.
01:55
The moon got mixed up and moved into to the ship
