00:00Hi, I'm John Holden.
00:02And I'm Andrea Ocampo.
00:04Welcome to Earth.
00:30Finally, we travel to Central Europe, to the country of Slovenia and its capital city
00:38of Ljubljana.
00:39Above me, you see the famous castle overlooking the city.
00:44You know, I want to get up as high as I could to try to see this castle, so I'm standing
00:49on a pallet.
00:51But in this case, this one is made of cardboard.
00:55It's 80% lighter, but yet just as strong, and you're going to see how this is helping
01:00save our forests and natural resources in a most unique way.
01:05Let's take a look.
01:10You've probably seen boxes stacked high in warehouses waiting to be shipped.
01:14They're often secured to pallets with straps or shrink wrap.
01:18The pallet system is a reliable, safe way to ship things, but it requires cutting down
01:23literally billions of trees.
01:27So the problem for the transport sector globally is that wooden pallets dominate.
01:34So over 90% of the pallets that are used are made of wood.
01:39And the demand for these pallets is growing at 5% per year.
01:44So it's really putting a huge strain now on wood supply.
01:49The impact on the environment has always been great by using wooden pallets, but it's just
01:54increasing at a time when we need to find ways to decrease the impact on the environment,
02:00the carbon footprint of these sort of products.
02:04Since the invention of forklifts and wooden pallets, global companies have searched for
02:08ways to make pallets lighter and use fewer natural resources.
02:14One company in Slovenia has found a solution.
02:17A pallet that is durable and strong as wood, yet 100% recyclable, 80% lighter, that can reduce
02:26CO2 emissions by 80% to make manufacturers and shippers lots of money.
02:32You guessed it, they're making sustainable pallets out of cardboard.
02:36I mean, cardboard is from the wood anyway.
02:39It has the best fibers, so it's the same material, but in way more sophisticated form.
02:45So by the default, cardboard should be a better material than a wood, if you use it correctly.
02:51And so therefore, our pallets are 80% lighter, but still have the same performance that wooden
02:57pallets.
02:58Now it's true corrugated cardboard has been the best material for protecting goods for more
03:02than a century.
03:04Kraft Bell knew that corrugated cardboard pallets would also provide the same excellent shock
03:09absorption during transportation, while still allowing companies to lower their pallet costs,
03:15yet reduce their carbon footprints and protect the environment at the same time.
03:19Rock, there's all this cardboard surrounding us.
03:22What's the benefits of cardboard over wood?
03:24John, there are so many.
03:25But to point out a few, they're super light, they're easy to recycle, and they can carry just
03:31about anything, a wooden pallet can.
03:33Now in the past, companies have tried to find a cost-effective alternative to wood pallets,
03:39but failed.
03:40Craft Bell was the only one to succeed in designing cardboard to be a widely adopted standard for
03:47the global supply chain and the transportation of goods.
03:50Yeah, it's much easier to do a custom pallet from cardboard because our machinery can take pretty
03:58much any design we want.
04:01More eco-friendly, more sustainable, it's lighter, it absorbs more vibration when transporting goods.
04:08The challenge was to build a pallet that would replace the wooden pallet in terms of performance
04:14needed on the market.
04:16These are rollers, conveyors, open rack systems, you know, manipulations and so on.
04:22And they failed big time because they never developed the design that would fit this criteria.
04:30So we were the first company that developed the designs that fit to the criteria and we
04:34can efficiently replace wooden pallets without any investments made by our clients.
04:40It meant designing modular machinery that allows companies a smooth transition from wood to cardboard
04:47pallets.
04:48In this case, the Palletinator, capable of producing hundreds of cardboard pallets per hour and powered
04:55by green energy.
04:56This machine is a combination of 15,000 parts, like modern robotic systems, gluing and folding
05:05systems.
05:06And we are able to produce 240 pallets per hour, doesn't matter which size or format you want.
05:15It's very easy to transition from wooden pallets to corrugated board pallets, because we as
05:22craft ball offer you or serve you with the whole technology, the knowledge to become a pallet
05:29producer as we are.
05:31Now, this is the first prototype of the next phase of the Palletinator.
05:36It's a $2 million complicated maze of machinery filled with over 15,000 parts from robotics and
05:44rollers to computers and engineering that will pump out a cardboard pallet every 15 seconds.
05:51The Palletinator is like a synchronized ballet.
05:54It's very complex production, because usually in the box industry they use four to eight
05:59manipulations, where we are using more than 64 manipulations to build one product, and it's
06:04accurate for less than 0.1 millimeter.
06:07So we can produce extremely efficiently, fast, and also accuracy is top of the industry.
06:15Lighter, recyclable, made of cardboard.
06:19Now, you may not know how your stuff is shipped, but at least now you know one more piece of
06:24the global sustainability picture and what's happening here in the country of Slovenia.
