01:48Johnny Bench at the plate
01:48Joe Morgan's at first no score
01:50and this is the showdown everybody's been waiting for
01:57Out two months with a broken thumb, but still a 15-game winner.
02:02It's the top of the fourth.
02:04Johnny Bench at the plate.
02:06Joe Morgan's at first. No score.
02:09And this is the showdown everybody's been waiting for.
02:13Luis Teant's good move against the base-running skills of Joe Morgan.
02:18Doesn't get him.
02:20Red Sox aren't sure.
02:22Teant sets. Throws.
02:24Umpire Nick Colossi calls it a block.
02:29And Red Sox manager Daryl Johnson drops in for a check.
02:36Teant gets benched to pop out, and then he ends the inning by striking out Tony Perez.
02:43It's during this World Series that Red Sox owner Tom Yawke is to say that the best all-around player the Red Sox have had is Carl Yastrzemski.
02:50And here's Yastrzemski making a believer out of Cincinnati's day of Concepcion.
02:55The score is still nothing-nothing.
02:57Top of the seventh.
02:58And watch this play.
03:00In the bottom of the seventh, Teant didn't look like a guy who hadn't been to bat in three years.
03:18Base hit.
03:19He did look like a guy who hadn't been on base in three years.
03:23Johnny Pesky gives him a jacket and says, now make a left turn.
03:31Dwight Evans wants Teant to second.
03:37Make a U-turn, Louie.
03:38Don Zimmer has to reintroduce himself and says, hey, Louie, I'll be the next guy, you see.
03:50I'm at third base.
03:52The fans love it.
03:57Denny Doyle singles Teant to third.
04:00And Yastrzemski single sends him home.
04:06But you know, you can forget things in three years.
04:10Touch the plate, Louie.
04:16The Red Sox keep rolling.
04:20Petruccelli single off reliever Will McEnany scores two more.
04:24Barky Anderson's unhappy.
04:30Rick Burleson single drives in the fourth run.
04:33And Carlton Fisk slides in with the fifth run of the inning.
04:37And the Sox get another one before they're retired.
04:39Treasury Secretary William Simon threw out the first ball.
04:42He's a spectator.
04:46And Luis Teant, who started the big inning, now finishes it.
04:51And Teant goes back to the mound with a six to nothing lead.
04:56Teant closes the door.
04:57One, two, three, and the eighth.
04:58And in the ninth, he gets Perez.
05:04George Foster is the second out.
05:09And Seppcion makes the third out.
05:13And the Red Sox have won the first game of the World Series six to nothing.
05:17The thrill for Teant is double because it happens in front of his father, who Teant has not seen in 14 years.
05:24It was tough to tell who was prouder.
05:27Yes, you are.
05:28You know, I guess after the 14th year, I don't see my father.
05:31That's the first game in the World Series.
05:34You see, and my first game for me, too.
05:36And I'll be glad.
05:37You know, like I said before, I thank you, God.
05:39I can be with him again.
05:41Game number two was a salute to the Navy on his 200th birthday.
05:47The game honored more than a half million Navy men and women who have worn the Navy uniform with pride.
05:52Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.
05:56Seaman Carl C. Glencross tosses out the first ball under rainy skies.
06:03Left-hander Bill Lee continues to hold Cincinnati scoreless until the fourth inning.
06:08Morgan walks.
06:10Johnny Bench singles, sending Morgan to third.
06:23And when Tony Perez hits into a force play, the big red machine scores its first run of the series.
06:30In the top of the sixth, with two men out, Johnny Bench hits a sinking line drive toward center fielder Fred Lynn.
06:46You can see it wasn't just his batting that made Lynn the first rookie in baseball history to be named his league's most valuable player.
06:52Watch this play again.
06:55Watch this play again.
07:02Fred Lynn.
07:05Bottom of the sixth inning, two out, one on.
07:08Rico Petrocelli against Cincinnati starter Jack Billingham.
07:12One swing of the bat, and the game turns around.
07:14The Red Sox lead two to one.
07:21And despite a 27-minute rain delay, Bill Lee holds the Boston lead until the ninth.
07:28The lights are on.
07:31Johnny Bench is the hitter.
07:33Number five, Johnny Bench.
07:36Bench, looking for an outside pitch, gets it, and hits an opposite field double.
07:51Lee leaves, Darryl Johnson goes to his goal plan.
07:55Number 41.
07:56There you go.
07:57Outpitch is involved.
07:59Got a man on second base, Dick.
08:01I'll tell you what, just get, what, second sign, all right?
08:04But the thing about it is just go right in and hard, in and out, up and down, so we'll get right after him. Come on.
08:10Dick Drago gets two quick outs.
08:13Dave Concepcion.
08:14Let's have a stop.
08:15Tying run is on third, one out left, and Concepcion is the batter.
08:24Bouncing ball up the middle.
08:25An infield hit, and the game's tied.
08:31Cincinnati's base running speed, so far not a factor, suddenly becomes very important.
08:36Ken Griffey at bat.
08:39Concepcion breaks for second.
08:42Makes it.
08:44And the tie-breaking run is in scoring position.
08:49Griffey doubles to left center field.
08:52Concepcion scores to make it 3-2.
08:54That's the way it ends, and the 1975 World Series leaves Boston tied one game apiece.
09:04Game three, and Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium.
09:11Red Sox manager Daryl Johnson was a member of a pennant-winning Cincinnati team,
09:16but that was in Crosley Field days, so Sparky Anderson conducts a guided tour.
09:21It's about three feet behind, all the way, everything else.
09:26The Reds start Gary Nolan, who won 15 games in 1975 after missing nearly two complete seasons with shoulder problems.
09:35Top of the second, Nolan pitches to Boston catcher Carlton Fisk.
09:39And there she goes, the first home run of this 1975 World Series.
09:46Two games in a small ballpark in Boston, no home runs.
09:49In the big ballpark here, this is the first of six home runs in the game.
09:54In the fourth, starter Rick Wise against Johnny Bench.
10:00Two-run homer.
10:02The next inning, back-to-back home runs by Concepcion and Cesar Geronimo.
10:10These were followed by a triple by Pete Rose.
10:18And watch him run.
10:20Rose says he always gives 110%, and it shows.
10:25Rose scores on Joe Morgan's sacrifice, flying the Reds lead 5-1.
10:29Number one, Brady Carbo.
10:31In the seventh, Bernie Carbo was sent up to pinch hit with the score 5-2.
10:39Clay Carroll is the pitcher.
10:41And there she goes.
10:46And there goes Clay Carroll.
10:50Do you think he was upset?
10:53I'll pitch it to Cincinnati.
10:55Number 37.
10:56Well back in the years.
10:58That was so easy.
11:00Pete Roselli singles the center.
11:03And Sparky Anderson lives up to his nickname of Captain Hook, and he brings in his fifth pitcher of the game, Raleigh Eastway.
11:10Dwight Evans is the batter.
11:1224.
11:14Dwight Evans.
11:14and there she goes over the left field wall a home run and the game is tied at five to five
11:27foster is unhappy
11:29and now comes a most talked about play of the series pinch hitter ed armbrister bunts
11:40catcher fisk moves for the ball his throw goes into center field
11:44the runners move to second and third and here comes red sox manager daryl johnson
11:49the man ran into him as a thing he was interfering and you went to call it
11:53you tell me what you were calling then but he did it
11:56i'm telling you the man interfered with that man on the play
12:01i'm telling you i want to see a man down here come here
12:04you mean to tell me that you can't help him on a play like that when he hasn't even touched the ball
12:09and the man was interfering with him there's no interference when a ball is hit
12:13and the catcher goes for the ball and the batter tries to get out and the batter tries to get
12:17out of the way he was all over the catcher now when the batter comes out of the box after hitting the
12:21ball and the catcher makes a play there was no interference i'm going to tell you something
12:25that's not the way that clay went i'll tell you that i'll tell you one thing i don't know what
12:29you're going to make a ruling on that but i want you to explain exactly what you were looking at
12:33when you called the play okay the guy the ball was hit he was moving for the ball and the runner
12:38was moving to first the runner was all over to catcher than there i can't help that it happened
12:43right there i'll tell you one thing it's a loud operation and you and i know it right now
12:47armchair umpires all over the country got in on this one but umpire larry barnett's was the
12:56decision that counted johnson now brought in roger moret to pitch to the dangerous joe morgan
13:02everybody's choice for the national league's most valuable player the defense is in to cut off the
13:07run but morgan hits it over fred lynn's head and cincinnati wins six to five and ten and he's to go
13:14ahead in the series two games to one here's morgan on that subject well when i go up in the base loaded
13:20and i got a chance to win a ball game like that i go up to get a base hit i wasn't up there trying to hit a
13:24fly ball or ground ball to get him in i wanted to get him in with a clean single to center field
13:28i try to revert back to the basic fundamentals of hitting and try and do a good job
13:32the red sox hoping to even the series named louise tiont to come back in game four
13:39but tiont who shut out the reds in the first game has problems right away beat rose leads it off
13:47single to center field
13:50griffey hits the next pitch to left center field it's a double scoring road griffey was out trying
14:03to stretch it to a triple joe morgan walked and with two out johnny benches the hitter
14:08bench lines one between evans and lynn a two-base hit and it scores morgan with the second run
14:16two to nothing cincinnati and for the first three innings cincinnati's fred norman kept the door
14:31closed but then in the fourth inning with two on and one out dwight evans is the hitter
14:37evans triples to right center field tying the game
14:46you got me now that's the way we're going to go and i'll keep in contact with you as we go
14:54but just get them prepared that way okay thank you good okay rick burleson singles over concepcion
15:01and boston leads three to two sparky anderson goes to his bullpen for pedro barbone you got one out
15:09you have to come to your stop beat now i'm telling you one out and then on second look in here and give
15:14it a stop
15:17and barbone has to face the hot bat of louise tiont
15:22tiont singles and that raises his batting average for the series to 500
15:36burleson scored on an error and then yastrzemski hit this one to shallow center field but watch the bounce
15:42tiont scores and the red sox lead five to two
15:53this game is not an easy one for louise tiont two out in the fourth and george foster is the batter
16:01for foster an infield hit good try but not in time
16:13concepcion hits one to left center where some of the red sox players decide to hold the meeting
16:21foster scores and it's five to three boston
16:23that's how tough this one is
16:35geronimo leads off the ninth with his third hit of the game
16:53and it moves geronimo to second
17:09louise tiont is concerned
17:13mrs tiont is concerned
17:16daryl johnson is concerned
17:18what do you guys think i got a left-hander down here louie
17:23can you get them all right all right you get right after them that ball comes back to you
17:28make sure to want out there and get after them good come on
17:33heat rose walks so ken griffey comes to the plate with the tying and winning runs on base
17:48it's a line drive to center and looks sure to be off the wall what a catch
17:58watch it again
18:04fred lynn
18:04but tiont still has a problem joe morgan
18:15geronimo is at second base watch him break tion throws morgan pops it up it was a hundred and sixty
18:22third pitch of the game the red sox win what one big league manager used to call a cliff dweller boston
18:29five cincinnati four
18:40game five and bernie carbo and pete rhodes visit before the game
18:45the fifth game saw the red sox scoring a first on denny doyle's triple and the sacrifice fly by
18:50yastrzemski in the fourth reggie cleveland is shutting cincinnati out when tony perez comes to the
18:55plate perez is looking for his first hit of the series he's 15 for all
19:04but with one swing of the bat it's goodbye
19:07goodbye baseball and goodbye red sox league we're tied at one apiece
19:15bottom of the fifth in its cincinnati pitcher don gullet gullet single
19:20cleveland against pete rose
19:29rose doubles into the left field corner
19:33don gullet scores and the reds lead two to one
19:36and now we'll see another way that joe morgan helps his ball club after he walks in the bottom of the
19:46sixth joe morgan breaks for second watch denny doyle he's pulled towards the back and johnny bench hits
19:53right through the hole vacated by doyle
19:5924. tony perez and then tony perez shows that the slump is really over there she goes we have ourselves a
20:09five to one ball game
20:27don gullet comes into the ninth inning having given up only two hits johnny bench will say later
20:33i've never seen him better and there are two outs in the ninth but the red sox still aren't convinced
20:38yastrzemski singles and so does fisk here is fred lynn a double down the right field line scoring yes
20:51and sparky anderson decides that it's time to make a change a record crowd of 56 393 give gullet a standing
21:01ovation
21:08eastwick comes in strikes out petrocelli and the world series moves back to boston with the reds leading
21:15three games to two
21:20what do you do on a rainy day in fenway well you don't play baseball commissioner bui kuhn and the
21:26staff of umpires inspect the field they announce there's no chance
21:32three days of rain three postponements and hardly a man is now alive who remembers that day in 75
21:38when this world series started
21:43finally the clouds and the tarpaulin were both rolled back and the fans sat down not realizing
21:51that they were about to see the game to which other world series games would be compared for years to come
21:57for the boston red sox it was winner go home so they went with the ace luis tion he got the reds out in the
22:07first and gary nolan went to the mound for cincinnati nolan got the first two batters and then
22:14yastrzemski and fisk single here is fred lynn
22:18that's still the top of the fifth
22:34that's still the score in the top of the fifth armbruster walks for cincinnati
22:49and it brings up pete rose
22:52rose singles and there are men on first and third
23:02three
23:04yeah
23:08griffey hits one to deep center field lynn goes back
23:14makes a great try but the ball is off the wall for a triple both runners score
23:23to see Fenway Park is silent.
23:25Move your legs all right, huh?
23:27I'll be okay.
23:29You sure? Yeah.
23:35The famous left field wall in Fenway
23:37has been ignored up to now.
23:39But Johnny Bench singles off it
23:41and ties the score 3-3.
23:43Watch as Stremsky played that ball perfectly.
23:49Perez is out, and the inning is over.
23:53Tied at 3-3.
23:59In the seventh, Griffey opens with a single.
24:05Joe Morgan punches a base hit to left.
24:17Luis Teant gets the next two men, Bench and Perez,
24:21but George Foster
24:23doubles high off the center field wall
24:25and the Reds lead 5-3.
24:33Top of the eighth inning,
24:35and the Reds, who had trailed by three,
24:37now lead by three
24:39when Geronimo hits his second home run of the series.
24:43Daryl Johnson goes to the mound and signals for Roger Moret.
24:59Okay, Luis.
25:01It is not Teant's night,
25:03but the Red Sox fans still love their Louie.
25:07It's the bottom of the eighth,
25:09and even the die-hard Red Sox fans can't realize that, as Al Jolson used to say,
25:23they ain't seen nothing yet.
25:25Lynn singles, Petrocelli walks, and Sparky Anderson brings in Eastwick.
25:29You got first and second, nobody out. Let's go to work.
25:33Eastwick is his sixth pitcher of the game.
25:35And after he gets two outs, Bernie Carbo is the pinch hit.
25:41The tying runs are on.
25:45And after two strikes, Bernie Carbo gives a hitting clinic of his own.
26:00First, the worst-looking swing of the series, and it's foul.
26:11Then the perfect swing, and this one is fair.
26:14And it's also gone.
26:15The game is tied at six and six.
26:19The Red Sox have come back from a three-run deficit.
26:23They're back in the World Series,
26:24and nobody knows that better than Bernie Carbo.
26:35Fenway Park is going wild.
26:37Except in certain parts.
26:40Dick Drago gets the Reds one, two, three in the ninth.
26:43In the Boston ninth, Denny Doyle walks.
26:46Yastrzemski singles, and Sparky changes pictures.
26:48This time it's Will McEnany.
26:50He walks Fisk intentionally.
26:51Bases loaded.
26:52Nobody out.
26:53And Fred Linn the hitter.
26:56Linn hits a fly ball with short left field.
26:59Caught by Foster.
27:00And watch what happens when Doyle tries to score.
27:02Out!
27:03McEnany gets Petrocelli to ground out,
27:05and we go into extra innings.
27:08In the top of the 11th,
27:11Rose goes to first base when the plate umpire says
27:13that Drago's pitch hit him.
27:14That's him.
27:15So, they go into some of the ball.
27:17And we go into extra innings.
27:18So in the top of the 11th,
27:20Rose goes to first base when the plate umpire says
27:24that Drago's pitch hit him.
27:29And it's an extra innings.
27:32How do you see?
27:33That's pretty good.
27:34If you do get three points
27:35that he's only missed.
27:36The umpire says that Drago's pitch hit him.
27:38Fisk doesn't think so.
27:48Satch, can you say for sure on a play like that it hit the man shut?
27:51That's what I saw, what I heard, and what I called.
27:53And it wasn't anything to do with his glove or a damn thing.
27:56No, no, no.
27:57Rose said later it might have hit a string on his uniform.
28:00I don't know.
28:06Griffey bunts.
28:08Fisk makes a perfect throw to get Rose.
28:12Joe Morgan is the batter.
28:17Morgan lines one to right field.
28:21What a catch.
28:22Sparky Anderson was to say later,
28:24it was just about the greatest catch I've ever seen.
28:31Watch it again.
28:36Evans told reporters,
28:38I just stuck out my glove,
28:39and the next thing I knew I was thrown at the first base.
28:47Now he realizes he got the double play.
28:55It's the 12th inning,
28:56and although it's after midnight,
28:57the only empty seats are in the Cincinnati bullpen.
29:00And their eighth pitcher, Pat Darcy,
29:03is pitching against Carlton Fisk.
29:09Fisk takes the first pitch high.
29:12Ball one.
29:17Then he swings.
29:19There she goes.
29:20Now watch Fisk.
29:21He uses all the body English he can get.
29:24He will tell reporters later,
29:25it was a question of it being fair or foul.
29:27The wind must have carried it 15 feet toward the foul pole.
29:31I just stood there and watched.
29:34I didn't want to miss seeing it go out.
29:42Here it is again.
29:46How to sum up this game?
29:48Well, maybe it was done best by Cincinnati's Pete Rose,
29:52who said,
29:53I never like to lose,
29:54but I'm proud to have played in this ball game.
29:57The unbelievable 1975 World Series goes to Game 7.
30:02But here's Fisk.
30:03It's probably one of the most exciting ball games
30:05that I've ever played in.
30:07Regardless of whether it's been a World Series
30:09or whether it's been a regular ball game,
30:11but even more so since it was a World Series.
30:13It was a crucial game for us
30:15and maybe a crucial game for baseball itself.
30:18I think we showed a lot of people
30:19how the game is supposed to be played.
30:22The World Series,
30:23which started as a best four out of seven,
30:25boils down to a best out of one.
30:2735,000 in the ballpark
30:29and an unprecedented 76 million television viewers
30:32will get set for the deciding game.
30:34Cincinnati's Don Gullet walks Bernie Carbo in the third.
30:40And then Denny Doyle,
30:42who is hit safely in every game,
30:45does it again with this single,
30:47which sends Carbo to third.
30:57Yastrzemski is the batter.
31:01Base hit.
31:02And when Doyle goes to third,
31:08Yastrzemski takes second on the throw.
31:13Anderson orders an intentional walk for Fisk.
31:18It looks like a perfect move
31:20when Fred Lynn is out on strikes.
31:22Petricelli walks on a full count to make the score,
31:31two to nothing.
31:35And then Dwight Evans walks on four pitches
31:37to make it three to nothing.
31:39Don Gullet, though, gets Burleson,
31:42and that ends the inning.
31:43But the Boston Red Sox lead three to nothing.
31:46That's the lead that left-hander Bill Lee,
31:50the one they call Spaceman,
31:52took into the sixth inning.
31:54Two outs.
31:55One on,
31:56and Tony Perez is at the plate.
31:58Bill Lee tries a big slow curve,
32:01and Perez rides it right out of the ballpark.
32:05The outspoken Lee said later,
32:08I made a bad pitch.
