Ichabod Crane est mort au XVIIIe siècle, tué sur le champ de bataille par un soldat mystérieux à l'allure maléfique. Avant de sombrer, Ichabod lui a coupé la tête. Mystérieusement, Crane revient à la vie en 2013, à Sleepy Hollow. Il n'a plus de repères dans ce nouvel univers mais doit rapidement s'adapter pour se lancer à la poursuite du cavalier sans tête, qui lui aussi, est revenu d'entre les morts. Il rencontre Abbie Mills, l'adjointe du shérif de Sleepy Hollow, qui lui prête une oreille attentive. Cette dernière est persuadée qu'Ichabod peut l'aider à comprendre ce qui est arrivée à son coéquipier, et bien plus encore, compte tenu des événements étranges survenus récemment dans la petite ville...
