A la tête du journal télévisé le plus regardé des Etats-Unis, Julia George est une productrice très puissante. Jake Gregorian, son meilleur ami, est un avocat charismatique qui ne défend que les riches et célèbres. Les deux ambitieux ont trouvé un arrangement satisfaisant pour l'un comme pour l'autre. Quand Julia accueille les illustres clients de Jake sur son plateau, son audimat grimpe en flèche. Quant à celui-ci, il médiatise ses affaires à peu de frais, quitte à distordre les faits. Julia et Jake ont cependant une faille : ils refusent d'admettre leur attirance mutuelle.
