A Santa Barbara, pendant l'été 1979, Dorothea Fields dirige une pension, rénovée avec l'aide de William, un client. Elle élève seule son fils Jamie, un adolescent. Elle a beau épouser les idées libertaires de l'époque, elle a de plus en plus de mal à le comprendre. Jamie lui reproche l'absence d'homme à la maison. Quand il se blesse après une figure en skate, elle demande l'aide de deux de ses locataires, Abbie, une photographe un peu punk, et Julie, une jeune fille qui cajole platoniquement et recueille les secrets de Jamie...
