Taiwanese Textile and Nail Manufacturers Brace for Trump Tariff Impact

Textile and nail manufacturers in Taiwan are uneasy after the U.S. announced global tariffs. Industry representatives say that tariffs may mean the nail "in the coffin" for some manufacturers already losing business to competitors China and Vietnam.

00:00Business was already going badly for Shen Ren Textile Company.

00:04Over the past few years, the 30-year-old textile manufacturer in Zhanghua County

00:08had already lost many of its customers to cheaper vendors in China and Vietnam.

00:13And now, as countries around the world face mounting tariffs from the U.S.,

00:17the company fears it will not be able to hold on much longer.

00:30The company is considering laying off workers to cut costs.

00:36Although the company doesn't sell directly to the U.S.,

00:39many of their products end up being exported there.

00:41And with tariffs affecting every part of the supply chain,

00:44this could raise costs for importers.

00:47A fear shared by other manufacturers, like this company that exports industrial nails.

00:52An industry representative said that 40% of Taiwan's nail exports go to the U.S.
