00:00As the world marks the International Day for Mine Awareness, several charities have issued

00:05a call for more global action. It's estimated that there could be as many as 10 million

00:10landmines spread about in some 64 countries, and possibly around 2 to 5 million more are

00:17being laid each year. While Africa is the continent most severely affected by landmines,

00:22Europe is hugely impacted too.

00:25I was 23 years old when I was struck by a landmine. I had big dreams, I was a young man with a

00:35big goal in front of me, and being struck by a landmine had a huge impact on my life.

00:43I felt like a young man's feet were being trampled on.

00:49Azerbaijan is one of the world's more landmine-affected countries. After decades of conflict, the

00:55government of Azerbaijan is actively conducting a program to counter landmines, raise awareness

01:01and protect the population.

01:03It's a matter of time before new landmines and landfills are built in our country.

01:09The scope of our landmine-clearing operations has widened.

01:14We have launched landmine-clearing operations in order to develop our landmine-clearing infrastructure.

01:33I am trying to learn more about landmines and landfills in order to prevent landmines from

01:45being destroyed.

01:55According to the international campaign to ban landmines, global demining efforts are

02:00backsliding, and as peace talks loom in Ukraine, activists have raised awareness that removing

02:06the estimated two million landmines will be crucial to guaranteeing future security for

02:12the country.
