Synopsis : 1992, à Chicago. Malik et Eric, deux amis inséparables de 12 ans, grandissent dans le quartier de logements sociaux de Cabrini-Green, un lieu délaissé par les autorités, plombé par la pauvreté et la violence. Malgré les difficultés financières, Dolores, la mère de Malik, et Anita, sa grand-mère, offrent au garçon un foyer stable et aimant. A l'inverse, le père d'Eric est un homme dur qui ne connaît que les punitions et la critique. Lorsque Dantrell Davis, un enfant de 7 ans, est mortellement blessé par une balle perdue, la vie des deux amis bascule. En effet, après ce drame, Dolores craint pour la vie de son fils et prend une décision déchirante....
