00:00and all the love stories were what Yashrad showed us and everything all the love stories
00:04were happening in the U.S. and like we never had any love stories in India so I was very
00:07against that. I had no money left so I said let's drop Sala Kaduz and Irithi Sutru. Let's do all the
00:12mundane other scripts that are coming to me.
00:21Dr. Ram, thank you so much. This felicitation was is another feather in our cap.
00:27I couldn't release the film for nine months after making Tanu Vajmanu
00:31original because they said there's no Sheela Ke Jawaani or Munni Badnaam. There was no
00:36Six Packs. The people were this movie was sounding like it was a 1980s film
00:40but there only Anand Rai believed it. I believed and Anand Rai the director believed and Kangana
00:44believed that it's an extraordinary film where people will lap it up because it is the love
00:49story of the like I call it in Hindi Mithi Ki Khushbu Wali where people look at it from
00:54the Indian you know heartlands. Until then all the love stories were what Yashraj showed us and
01:00everything all the love stories are happening in the U.S. and like we never had any love
01:04stories in India so I was very against that. So but it was a tough fight you know you put in your
01:09money you put in all your wealth and you put in your conviction and before it can be validated
01:14you have to go through this little channel where people are telling you can't be done won't be
01:19watched not be enjoyed and that's always going to happen to every new idea that you come up with in
01:24your life. It probably has already trying to convince your parents or convince your brothers
01:29or convince your family members that this is what you really want to do and this is going to be a
01:34battle that you're going to fight all your life. So I think you should just get your weapons
01:40ready and understand I think understanding the fact that there will be resistance
01:44from the most important quarters is the first battle that you've won. Understand that there
01:49will be and if everybody is against an idea not I'm not talking about if they're against the way
01:57you're drinking and falling over every night that's not what I'm talking about. I'm saying
02:01not with your lifestyle problem but if you have an idea that you really believe in and you see
02:06it's coming from your very soul it's coming from deep within you and people are resisting it for
02:12no apparent reason then know that you have something very important in hand and pursue it.
02:16I came to a point in my life with this film where I wasn't able to find a producer.
02:22At 45 yeah you know you keep learning all the time. So I came to a point where I gave up. I was
02:29training for 11 months in the US and another eight months learn how to box in Los Angeles and Chicago
02:36and I was staying at my friend's place whose name is Paresh Gelani who's like a brother to me and
02:42we got along really well but when I when I my final contract in Bombay fell through
02:48I decided that this is it I'm not going to do this anymore because I had no money left. I had to you
02:54know make money as a filmmaker so I said let's drop Sala Kadus and let's do all the mundane other
02:59scripts that are coming to me and that afternoon I was very moved. I remember calling Paresh and
03:04it's in the middle of the night for him and I said Paresh you know what I lost man I can't do this.
03:09This is ridiculous it's almost like I'm the only guy who believes in it it's like I'm being a bull
03:13in a china shop nobody wants to listen to me and they all believe that this film is a goner.
03:19So he said hang on Maddy one second. He said I've sold three of my companies and become bankrupt
03:26thrice in my life before I sold my last company for 900 million. 900 million is not an easy amount
03:32of money. He said my victory is not in the fact that I sold my company for 900 million. It is
03:38about the fact that in the last two times that I did become bankrupt I didn't give up. I learned
03:44about people. I learned about people who are close to me. I learned about people who are trying to
03:48let me down. I will learn about people who are trying to keep me down and I still fought all that
03:53and it's a result of all these fights during my failure that I sold the third company for 900
03:58million. The next time you have another challenge like this Maddy you won't even come till here.
04:03You will know that this is futile you will give it up and you will not take risks in your life
04:07and so if you give up the film right now you will never come this far even the next time you start
04:12a product project. So he said what do you want you need money you'll get it but make sure you
04:19see this film through even if it doesn't do well even it flops I assure you that the experience
04:25that you get out of this failure will be your biggest tool for your next success and he was
04:29right. So there's no point in having 500 million dollars in your bank account and nobody who likes
04:35you and nobody to share that success with and you not knowing what to do. A big success is
04:40especially against all odds it can be a double-edged sword because you can dwell on it for the rest of
04:45your six months and lose the race or just acknowledge the fact that your convictions
04:50have improved and move on to the next one.
