The trial of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is underway. You might know him as a character on Netflix's "Narcos: Mexico", but here is the real-life story behind one of the world's most dangerous drug traffickers.

00:30This is where Chapo Guzman comes to prominence.

01:00They had an opportunity to make a lot of money.

01:30That challenge has to be fought with all the strength of the State.

01:37And for that reason, we have to fight the criminals,

01:40because here, the only owner of the city, or the only owner of the town,

01:44or the only owner of this State, is the Mexican State.

02:30What I have been able to show and document over five years of research

02:35is that both the government of Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderon

02:40have not had a war against drug trafficking.

02:44They have had a war against the enemies of El Chapo

02:47to make the Sinaloa Cartel practically a hegemonic cartel in Mexico,

02:53practically a monopoly of drugs, one more monopoly in Mexico.

02:58Believing, absurdly, that having a single cartel, a single interlocutor,

03:06they will be able to control much better the arms and drug trafficking.

03:29This is Joaquin Guzman. Why? Because he is the one who helps the people.

03:34The government must take care of it.

03:36The march is the reason for not bringing the man to the United States,

03:41because we don't want him to go further.

03:45We are supporting him because he is a very good man,

03:48for us he is a very good person.
