The Countries Without A National Day

While India celebrates Independence Day, these countries do not have any such national days.

00:00It's a day that massacres occurred. It's a day that, you know, our women and children

00:17were raped and murdered at the hands of white settlers.

00:33January the 26th, from the day the first fleet landed, that is a historical fact. You can't

00:39change it. So that should be celebrated because, you know, it's a new arrival, it's a new nation.

00:47In the same way that when the Aborigines landed, they created a new nation 40,000 years earlier.

01:04We're past the point where you complete ignorance. People know that what this day represents

01:08and they know that they shouldn't be celebrating on this day. It's no longer a case of, oh,

01:12but I love this country. No, if you love this country, you'd respect all of the people in

01:15this country, and that includes Indigenous people who are hurt and who are grieving on

01:19this day.

01:20I would personally, yeah, and I know a lot of people in community would absolutely want

01:23to see a change of date. Yeah, a separate recognition for the existence of Aboriginal

01:58We need to start thinking globally about our future. And the other thing I think that

02:12needs to happen is that June the 23rd needs to become a national bank holiday, and we

02:19will call it Independence Day.

02:49Well, there's nobody around, so we have asked, but nobody could tell us.
