In Kashmir, where restrictions are usually stricter than other parts of India, the Covid-19 lockdown has been tough on even the doctors. Senior cardiologist Dr. Syed Maqbool shared his detention story with Brut.

00:04You are stopping the health workers, you are disturbing the doctors.

00:07If this is the situation, this is the status of doctors who are fighting COVID this time,

00:14what will be happening to our juniors?

00:16What will be happening to the paramedical staff?

00:30I said, I am a doctor, this is my I-card, this is my duty roster, I am on duty and I have to reach my hospital.

00:55He said, no, whatever you are, whoever you are, I am not going to allow you, you cannot go this way.

01:01This argument continued for one or two minutes.

01:05After that, I stepped out of my car.

01:07I said, I will talk to your SHO.

01:10As soon as I stepped, he just hit my belly with his baton.

01:15And immediately the SHO who was on the other side of the road, he rushed towards me.

01:22He grabbed me and took me in my car to Jedival Police Station.

01:34I kept on telling him that I am the cardiologist on call.

01:38Please give me my phone so that I can call my HOD or my principal

01:43and they arrange some other doctor instead of me who can take care of the emergency calls.

01:49To this, he replies that you doctors are thieves.

01:53You earn commissions, you write duplicate medications, that is what you make money upon.

01:59Go to hell, to hell with your hospital, you and your patients, I am not bothered about that.

02:05This COVID is actually a problem of police and police is tackling it.

02:09He did not listen at all to all this.

02:12And instead he kept on telling me that we have orders from MHA.

02:17We can impose a section, you will not come out of the jail for 10 years.

02:22I am being very lenient with you.

02:47This is the situation, this is the status of doctors who are fighting COVID this time.

03:00On one hand, our Prime Minister, our Home Minister, our State Administration,

03:07all over India, all over the world, people are saluting doctors.

03:11They are paving way for them.

03:13They are creating simple ways for them to reach to their hospitals.

03:19They are being flowered.

03:21And if this is the situation, if this is the status of doctors in Kashmir,

03:27I am a senior interventional cardiologist.

03:29I have been doing cardiology for last 20 years.

03:32If this is the state of affairs with me, what will be happening to our juniors?

03:38What will be happening to the paramedical staff?

03:41What will be happening to the medical staff?
