How much has Narendra Modi’s signature Startup India campaign flagged? Silicon Valley investor Asha Jadeja Motwani raised more than one red flag in this interview to Brut India. Brut partnered with @TiEDelhi for the 4th edition of TiE Global Summit.

00:00Unfortunately, we have this system of the government running the show, which doesn't work.

00:07And then what happens is when people like us come in from abroad and say,

00:10no, no, please don't do this, they don't like us.

00:30I'm delighted to be in India right now.

00:58There's lots of growth here and I'm hoping to play a role in making sure that Indian startups

01:06have the freedom to be global faster than what we might be planning right now.

01:12Well, what's happening right now, which I think is a bit sad, is that we are moving to Canada

01:18because Canada is doing that.

01:22Canada seems to have figured out that our startups here may not have a very nurturing environment

01:35where they have the freedom.

01:37You see, startups are about freedom.

01:39You have to have the freedom to do your own thing.

01:43You can't be sitting in an incubator or something.

01:45Startups want the freedom to get their funding, set up an office and do their own thing.

01:50So, unfortunately, we have this system of the government running the show, which doesn't work.

01:56And then what happens is when people like us come in from abroad and say,

01:59no, no, please don't do this, they don't like us.

02:03Myself and 15 other people from the valley who have tried to make a difference, we've been pushed out.

02:11So, I'm hoping that this conversation will become more mainstream.

02:17All of us are coming from the valley with a lot of experience and a lot of net worth.

02:24So, if other foreign governments are chasing us, shouldn't the Indian government be doing that?

02:30But no.

02:31If we are coming from the valley, if you are a diaspora member with a high net worth,

02:35I think we are seen as a threat.
