What are some of the new Covid-19 symptoms in the second wave? When do you need to get tested? Dr Souradipta Chandra answered some key questions for Brut. Watch here:

00:00If you do not have symptoms, then it's advised not to go get an RT-PCR test done right now

00:05considering the labs are anyway all overloaded.

00:07Remember, most of the COVID symptoms can be symptomatically treated at home.

00:15You do an RT-PCR test when you get signs and symptoms.

00:19Simple signs and symptoms, for example, fever, body ache, cough and cold,

00:24diarrhea, lethargy, severe lethargy for about 2-3 days.

00:29If you do not have symptoms, then it's advised not to go get an RT-PCR test done right now

00:34considering the labs are anyway all overloaded.

00:37If you've come in contact with a COVID positive patient, isolate yourself.

00:41Do not rush to go do an RT-PCR test right away.

00:44Isolate yourself.

00:45Wait and watch and see if you get any symptoms.

00:48Hospital admission is not required for all COVID patients.

00:51Remember, most of the COVID symptoms can be symptomatically treated at home.

00:56The only reason why you will need to go to the hospital would be

01:001. If your SpO2, the oxygen level, starts dropping and if it goes below 91

01:06for a couple of hours, for a few hours, and it remains below 91,

01:11then you need to go to the hospital.

01:12The second reason why you would need to go to the hospital is if your fever is not reducing.

01:18If it is about 102-103°F, corresponding to about 39°C,

01:24continuously for a couple of days, irrespective of paracetamol,

01:27irrespective of anti-inflammatories,

01:29that's when you need to seek medical help at the hospital.

01:33The new mutant strain seems to be rather contagious

01:36and maybe that's the reason why the younger population is getting it more

01:39as compared to the older population.

01:41Watch out for some new signs and symptoms.

01:43There seems to be abdominal pain, there seems to be diarrhoea,

01:47severe lethargy, sore throat, there seems to be rashes on the body,

01:52there seems to be confusion, there seems to be a brain fog,

01:56you seem to be in a state of confusion,

01:58there seems to be bluish discoloration of the nails and the toes, of the fingers and the toes,

02:04there seems to be nausea, vomiting, severe weakness, apart from, of course, the older symptoms.

02:09Try wearing your masks even at home, if possible, if you do have a COVID patient at home.

02:14Make sure the ventilation in the patient's room is good.

02:18Make sure you do not use a common air conditioning for the entire house, if possible.

02:24And, of course, social distancing is very crucial.

02:27Similarly, for children as well.

02:28Try to be a little optimistic, cautiously optimistic,

02:31that a majority of our patients and a majority of our population is healing well

02:36without needing to go to the hospital.

02:38So keep that in mind, try to stay strong, don't panic,

02:42and hang in there, we'll get through this.
