00:00I reiterate India's strong support to the just Palestinian cause

00:06and its unwavering commitment to the two-state solution.

01:00Today's open debate has been necessitated by the continuing violence which began in

01:17East Jerusalem a week back and is now threatening to spiral out of control.

01:22The events of the last several days have resulted in a sharp deterioration of the security situation.

01:28The indiscriminate rocket firings from Gaza targeting the civilian population in Israel,

01:35which we condemn, and the retaliatory strikes into Gaza have caused immense suffering and

01:42resulted in deaths, including women and children.

01:46India has also lost one of her nationals living in Israel in this rocket fire, a caregiver

01:54in Ashkelon.

01:55We deeply mourn her demise, along with all other civilians who have lost their lives

02:01in the current cycle of violence.

02:03We reiterate our strong condemnation of all acts of violence, provocation, incitement

02:10and destruction.

02:12Immediate de-escalation is the need of the hour so as to arrest any further slide towards

02:17the brink.

02:18We urge both sides to show extreme restraint, desist from actions that exacerbate tensions

02:25and refrain from attempts to unilaterally change the existing status quo, including

02:31in East Jerusalem and its neighbourhood.

02:34Jerusalem has a special place in the hearts of millions of Indians who visit the city

02:39every year.

02:41It also houses the Al-Zawiyah Al-Hindiyah, the Indian hospice, which is a historic place

02:47associated with the great Indian Sufi saint Baba Farid and located inside the old city.

02:54India has restored this Indian hospice.

02:56The historic status quo at the holy places of Jerusalem, including the Haram al-Sharif

03:03Temple Mount, must be respected.

03:06We support the diplomatic efforts of the Quartet and other members of the international community,

03:12the countries in the region in particular, to calm the situation and put an end to the

03:16ongoing violence and seek to achieve durable peace.

03:20These incidents have once again underscored the need for immediate resumption of dialogue

03:25between Israel and Palestinian authorities.

03:28The absence of direct and meaningful negotiations between the parties is widening the trust

03:33deficit between the parties.

03:35This will only increase the chances for similar escalation in the future.

03:40We believe that every effort should be made to create conducive conditions for resumption

03:44of talks between Israel and Palestine.

03:48In conclusion, I reiterate India's strong support to the just Palestinian cause and

03:56its unwavering commitment to the two-state solution.
