From the Red Sea to Amman: Jordan's major desalination project to reach water resilience

The Road to Green takes you to Jordan, where the European Union, the European Investment Bank and development agencies are playing a crucial role in supporting one of the most water-deprived countries in the world towards water resilience.

00:10Jordan is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world.

00:13Depending on where you live, you may have water once per week,

00:16once every two weeks or once per month.

00:19AFD in Jordan participated, amongst others, in the Wadi Al Arab treatment plant project,

00:24which has a capacity of 80,000 cubic meters per day of potable water,

00:28which is sent to Irbin.

00:30From KFW, we support the Jordanian partners in rehabilitating the King Abdullah Canal

00:35so that less water is being lost and can be used for the Jordanian population

00:41for drinking water purposes.

00:42We do mostly loans to the government and some grants in addition.

00:48We provide also technical expertise.

00:51We also give concessional loan financings,

00:54which means that the loan is a bit less expensive than a market loan

00:59and therefore more attractive.

01:00We propose projects to the European Union.

01:04If they are consistent with the strategies of the Union,

01:07then we can propose the financing to our Jordanian partners

01:11who will implement the project.

01:12We also exchange on our challenges,

01:14which really helps to become better and to support each other.
