00:00Can you introduce me as Joker?
00:25One of the first things that I did was I started to study medication and really the side effects
00:31and I was curious about, he said he's on seven different medications and so I started going
00:39online and reading about it and everybody, there were all these message boards filled
00:43with people talking about these extreme changes in weight, either they put on weight or they
00:49lost weight and it seemed like it was this common theme for so many people.
00:55And so that's really what motivated the idea of him being thin.
01:01So that was the beginning and I've worked with this nutritionist before and it's just
01:05a very regimented diet and that's it.
01:09And did it affect you psychologically?
01:12Well sure, I mean like, yeah obviously, it's like 500 calories a day, so kind of losing
01:22the weight can be difficult, but surprisingly, it helped me find so much of the movement
01:28of the character, things that I hadn't anticipated, but I think you become aware of your body
01:35in a different way.
01:36The scene in the movie where Arthur is dancing in the bathroom, that was not in the script,
01:54that was just something Joaquin and I started talking about and I started playing him some
01:57music and he just started doing this dance and we decided that that should be in the
02:02movie.
02:03It inspired me, it was challenging in many ways as an actor, but it also just challenged
02:12my own feelings about this character and it challenged my empathy.
02:22And it was a tough character, it was a tough movie, it didn't provide any easy answers
02:29or solutions.
02:31There's a great ambiguity to it and I really like that.
02:48He was very nervous about his ability to do that laugh in the movie, if you saw the movie,
02:54it reads very simply, Arthur starts to laugh, it looks like a painful laugh, and for an
03:01actor to do that is a lot harder than it reads, so he wanted to make sure that it was in line
03:07with what I was thinking, so we worked on that laugh for a while.
03:10I studied these videos, they're people that have these uncontrollable fits of laughter,
03:18and I studied that, and then, I really don't know how to explain it, then you just try
03:26it and you make a lot of mistakes, there's a scene in the movie that's from the second
03:30day of shooting and I hadn't found it yet and I hate the scene because it seems forced
03:38and it seems wrong and I just hadn't really found it yet, but there were days where it
03:46wouldn't come easily, and then sometimes it would be easier and sometimes you'd get
03:52it in two takes and then the next three takes, it just wouldn't work for whatever reason,
03:59so it wasn't a science, I didn't figure out just how to turn it on, every time we did
04:04it I was discovering it.
