It's said to give women the perfect hourglass figure to make them look like the Kardashians, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj...

But this increasingly popular surgical procedure also has one of the highest mortality rates. Here's what you need to know about the Brazilian butt lift or BBL by Dr. Anthony Youn.
Transcript
00:00The most important thing people need to know about BBL surgery is that it can be deadly
00:05in the wrong hands.
00:07It's not worth it, I did it.
00:36The Kardashians, the Jenners, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, there's so many celebrities where their
00:43focus is on the rear end and so young women then undergo this operation as a way to try
00:48to get bodies like their idols.
00:52I'm not going to do it girl, I was just thinking about it, I'm not going to do it.
00:58I did it.
01:07The surgery starts by liposuctioning, removing fat from certain body parts, typically the
01:12abdomen, the hips and the thighs are very common areas.
01:16That fat is then purified and then it is re-injected into the buttocks, utilizing small incisions.
01:27It can be a fairly straightforward recovery if you have a couple of hundred cc's that's
01:45taken out of your body and injected into the buttocks.
01:47But some doctors will do quite extensive operations where they'll inject a liter or more into
01:54each butt cheek.
01:56Recovery once again depends on just how much fat is removed and injected.
02:00Those areas where you have the fat removed, you've had liposuction, they are going to
02:03be sore.
02:04They may drain fluid and even blood through the incisions for several days.
02:09As far as the buttocks, it is important after the operation not to sit on the buttocks.
02:15We want to avoid putting pressure onto those areas.
02:41The problem is that if this operation is performed by a cosmetic surgeon who does not
02:46have proper training in how to safely perform this operation, people can die and they can
02:51die very, very quickly.
02:57If you're going to inject the buttocks with fat, you must inject it into the subcutaneous
03:02layer, that layer between the skin and the underlying muscle.
03:06If a doctor does not know this, if they've never studied this, if they're dabbling in
03:10it and they inject the fat deep into the muscle of the buttocks, which has been a very common
03:15thing, then the death rate goes up significantly due to a complication called fat embolism.
03:23The horrifying part about this is that you can die literally within minutes and who's
03:28dying from these operations?
03:30It's usually young women and often young women of color.
03:37The fat that is injected into the buttocks with a BBL is permanent, but not all of it
03:43will stay.
03:44Anywhere from about 30% to 50% of the fat that is injected into the buttocks with this
03:49operation will stay long-term, five years, 10 years, probably even longer.
03:53If you have a pretty conservative BBL and it's a couple of hundred cc's maybe injected
03:58into your buttocks, that most likely is not going to cause your buttocks to have, let's
04:03say premature aging as you get older.
04:06But if you're injecting one to two liters into each butt cheek, how is that fat going
04:11to stay there as you get older and your skin gets droopy?
04:16Those are things that haven't really been looked at because the operation hasn't been
04:19around necessarily long enough for us to get those long-term studies and those long-term
04:24results.
