She was a feminist icon and only the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court. Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died at the age of 87. This is her story.

00:00In my lifetime, I expect there will be, among federal judicial nominees,

00:07based on the excellence of their qualifications, as many sisters as brothers-in-law.

00:30Women and men working together should help make the society a better place than it is now.

00:48Marty was a boy like none I had ever met. This was a young man who really cared that I had a brain.

01:01We felt that all eyes were on us, whether it was so or not,

01:05that if we were called on in class and we gave a dumb answer,

01:11people would think, well, what could you expect from a woman?

01:16So we were super prepared.

01:18If you got the job, you generally performed at least as well, in many cases better, than the men,

01:35but you needed to get that first job to be set on your way.

01:39This regulation, if you're pregnant, you're out unless you have an abortion,

01:50violated the equal protection principle, because no man was ordered out of service

01:59because he had been the partner in the conception.

02:10He was determined to appoint members of minority groups and women in numbers,

02:16not as one-at-a-time curiosities.

02:31People ask me, when would you be satisfied with the number of women on the court?

02:35When there are nine.

02:40I was quite wiped out, and Marty said, Ruth, you look like a survivor of a concentration camp.
